Couldn't be happier with the work the crew did on our avocado and cork (Quercus suber) trees. They did a fantastic job, shaping, and cleaning up both trees, and I literally cannot see any bad or obvious large cuts from their work. So impressed. They're a great group of skilled arborists. My wife hired Matt Bowman of Complete Tree in Berkeley to trim a very large oak tree in our up-slope  backyard.  The tree had not been trimmed in years and had several dead branches.  The tree overhang our fence and covered some of our neighbor's yard as well.  Matt gave us a quote for the work, which was less than other competing quotes.  His large crew, which was guided by a worker, who I believe is Matt's son, did a great job!  They were very careful not to damage other foliage in our backyard or our neighbor's backyard.  They did a complete job, safely, without disruption and on budget.  There was a huge amount of debris, which they cut up and hauled away, without leaving a trace in our yard or on the street.  I commend this company and recommend them highly. read more

Complete Tree Care has done three jobs for us, one big: removing two large trees, and two smaller jobs, removing some old gnarly juniper plants and a different overgrown hedge plants in another part of our yard. Matt has done work for a couple of our neighbors, who recommended him to our next door neighbors to cut down a couple of aging Monterey pines that towered over both our houses. We had been worrying about the closer of the two trees falling on our house, so it was a relief. Before these folks had bought the house last year I had asked Matt to take a look at the pines to assess their stability. This was 3 or 4 years ago and he said that they were reaching the end of their lifespan, but were in no danger of falling. When our neighbors arranged to have Complete Tree Care take down the trees we offered to share the cost because these trees had been a concern for years. In addition to the pines they were to take out several volunteer pittosporums which were messy, unwelcome additions to our yards, prune an evergreen in front and cap some redwoods in the back of their house. Matt and his crew arrived September 11, w/ a plan to return September 18 to finish. They got to work and took down the pittosporum that was closest to us and the pines, leaving 10 feet of the trunk of the larger pine so our neighbors could have a sculpture created by a local sculptor. They shaped the evergreen so it is now graceful in a way it had never been before. My only unhappiness was that the crew was carelessly destructive of the succulents and agaves I had planted in the front patch over the store drain, trampling the agaves and obliterating a couple of succulents. Granted, they were all small, but I would have expected more care than that. I think I can save one of the agaves; the other is looking pretty ragged. I expected collateral damage to the fuchsias that lived in the patch closest to the pines from falling branches, but fuchsias are resilient and I knew I could prune them back, which I have done. The work went surprisingly quickly and the crew did a great job cleaning up. When they returned on the 18th they had maybe a couple of hours work left, grinding out the stumps and doing the redwoods. I'm not sure what the entire bill was, but our share was entirely reasonable and I would definitely recommend Matt and his crew. read more

On March 5th, 2018, Complete Tree Care had a permit to remove a Monterey pine tree from our neighborhood, they instead removed an old growth redwood tree that was over 100 years old, and 200 feet high. These trees are protected in California as they are endangered. I would urge you reader, to choose a more ethical choice for your tree removal contractor and avoid these people. read more

They removed all the branches and took the height down from about 120 feet to 70 feet. We all feel much safer now. It was a huge job, and they did it all in just two days. Matt and his company were recommended by a neighbor. He showed up on time to look at my two trees that needed pruning and gave me an estimate with a good price. He said it was OK to prune one tree now but recommended waiting until late fall for the second tree to avoid damaging it, a knowledge-based approach that I appreciated. They put me on their schedule but were able to come sooner when they completed another job in my neighborhood earlier than expected. The 5-man crew went right to work and did an outstanding job of thinning and shaping my large oak tree. It's aesthetically pleasing and lets more light through to the plants underneath it. I asked Matt to take out a huge ivy in my yard, and stump grind, but he told me he didn't stump grind, which isn't unusual for a tree service. He said, 'What you do with ivy is dig it out. We're going to show up with picks. Then you apply herbicide.' The morning of the job we went over it again and he clearly said the same thing - 'herbicide and picks.' The two guys then worked from 9:30a to noon and left without digging, applying herbicide, or telling me they were leaving - I just happened to see them get in their truck, so checked the site and called Matt. Matt then told me the guys had told him I did not want the digging. At this I was incredulous. I asked him if it had occurred to him how nonsensical this was - why would I ever do such a thing, especially without calling him. And why hadn't he called me? He then told me that one of them had been his 'trusted employee for ten years.' OK Matt - but they lied to you and abandoned the job, what are you going to do? The next day they came to do the digging. I was glad things were getting back to normal. Then, weirdly, Matt told me he'd 'never promised the digging in the first place'. But Matt - you told me yesterday plain as day that your men had left solely because I 'cancelled the digging'.' Do you think you might want to choose one story over another before proceeding? They did take out about 2/3 of the roots, leaving a huge tangled mass of them under the path leading to the ivy, but hey - I have a strong back and finished up the job. read more

Matt and his crew came out once before and we were pleased with both his advice and his crew. This year I wanted about 10 trees really cut back and shaped and more light coming in to the front and back yard. Matt came with 8 guys on time and it was an incredible blitz. Shaping, trimming, doing long overdue haircuts. I was delighted, my dog was not and I'm not sure how my neighbors will feel since we were getting pretty hidden by overgrown trees which seemed fine for the lockdown months. Even my large avocado tree got some love. I can see up to my front gate again. Clearly these guys have worked together awhile and are a great team. They cleaned up afterwards and waited while Matt did a double check to make sure I was satisfied. It's quite a hill to climb and drag all the debris but nothing was scratched or damaged, the walk way was leaf free and tidy. He is a talented pruner, opening the tree up to let in air and sunlight while still maintaining that critical screening element. He has a great eye in terms of shaping our trees as well. I would give Matt and his crew 6 stars if I could. Right when I met Matt, I got a good feeling. I had a sense--this guy is trustworthy, and in this work for the right reasons. He came on time, to give me an estimate of my work. He told me the right time in the year to prune our trees, and gave the the best priced estimate I received. We had a huge job in the back including taking down large acacia trees, pruning plum trees, and picking up loads of pulled ivy from our deck. Matt's crew came in and took care of everything in a day. Matt also organized with the Oakland Zoo to pick up the Acacia tree branches to feed to the elephants! It was awesome to see the Oakland Zoo get four truck fulls of Acacia to give to hungry elephants! I had a huge crew in my yard for like 8 hours, trimming live oaks that hadn't been trimmed in probably 40 years. They did a GREAT job, and the price - considering the amount of work to be done - was quite reasonable. Matthew is easy to work with, and I appreciated his knowledge. He refused to trim two of our smaller trees because it was the wrong time of year to tackle them. That is a great sign - turning down work. Matt and Complete Tree Care are beyond awesome. On Matt's first visit he 'read' our 100ft Redwood, telling me extemporaneously how many times it's been trimmed and when, all of it exactly correct. His estimate was much less than the last thinning of the tree plus he removed some new growth at the bottom and the work was more thorough and the tree more beautiful than ever before. Sadly, I had one very dead and one very sick tree on my property. Matt came over, looked at my trees, and suggested that even with heroic measures, I probably would lose the ailing Birch anyway. He gave me a great bid on removing both trees and grinding one stump and was amenable when I asked that the stump be ground deep enough to allow for planting a replacement tree. His crew showed up right on time, introduced themselves, and got to work. They had the trees felled, chipped, loaded, and the site cleaned up in a remarkably short time. Surrounding bushes and plantings as well as the two houses on either side of the work site were safely protected while they worked, and if you didn't know that there had been a couple of trees just hours earlier, you'd never suspect it by the time they drove away. Professional, prompt, affordable, and accurate. I hated having to remove trees, but couldn't be happier with the outcome and would not hesitate to use Complete Tree Care again. Matt and his crew came to remove and trim trees from our yard. During the process we flagged some concerns that his crew had dragged heavy branches through our rose bushes, broke a sprinkler pipe, and left some branches lying around. After the work was complete, he returned without notice or permission to our property to pick a fight with us regarding our concerns. He did not come with the intention to rectify any issues and make things right but to defend himself and lecture us about how we were wrong. He said he didn't break our sprinkler pipe and it was broken already (we tested it before he arrived and it was functioning). He refused to admit his mistake although WE are the owners of this home and know our home better than he does. He said the rose bushes were fine. He said everything was clean. He essentially went one by one and gaslighted all our concerns, belittling and dismissing our complaints. Even if his actual work was okay, the fact that he returned uninvited to our property with the sole intention of undermining the issues we brought up made this entire experience very sour for us. We hope we never see this man again. read more

Matt gave us a more than reasonable price to remove 2 trees and grind the stumps, one of which had a massive (and I mean massive) stump. Frankly I expected there to be some disagreement over what it meant for the stump to be actually ground down, but the work was just what I hoped for. And at the last minute they found time to remove an additional stump we discovered covered by ivy. They were efficient, professional, and cleaned up the site. I had 2 dangling branches which were threatening my fence and cars parked on the street he did them an still managed to clean up the tree to make holes for the winter gales. Complete Tree Care Berkeley, CA 94702 was preforming work on Oxford Street, between Indian Rock Road and Marin Ave (A neighborhood of smallish lots and narrow streets. I was walking down the sidewalk - There was a cloud of dust from 3 to 4 gas powered blowers. It crossed the street and rose to tree level height - I was trapped I could not continue due to the dust and debree in the air - After calling and calling to the man closest to me and an additional 3 minutes to have the air clear I was able to pass the work area - NONE of the workers were wearing any kind of mask. I am certain this is an OSHA violation. I also cannot but help to notice this business has no street address .?..!!! Hmmmm Feeling guilty about bad review so checked - "Gasoline Powered Leaf BlowersGas Powered Leafblower Not Allowed (Ordinance No. 5500-N.S.,Section 13.40.070) "... it shall be unlawful for any person, including any city employee, to operate any portable machine powered with a gasoline engine used to blow leaves, dirt, and other debris off sidewalks, driveways, lawns, or other surfaces within the City limits."" read more
