Unfortunately, after multiple chances, I feel completely disrespected by my experience with Cal Line Tree Service. We had a stump in front of our house, so I contacted Cal Line and Alejandro sent me an estimate right away. The price was great and the reviews looked good, so I decided to move forward. Before agreeing to the job, I specifically asked whether the work would damage our sidewalks because we had just paid to have them redone. I was told not to worry because they wouldn't damage them. From the beginning, the communication was frustrating. They gave me a time to show up and didn't. Eventually, a worker arrived and began grinding the stump with a large machine. While my girlfriend was home, she repeatedly heard rocks and debris hitting the windows. I immediately contacted Alejandro, but he assured me not to worry and said the job was done. When I got home, I was shocked by the condition of the property. There was roughly a foot of mulch covering the entire area, far beyond where the stump had been. I started cleaning it up myself and filled a green waste bin, with plenty more still left to remove. That's when I discovered the damage. The newly redone sidewalk had chunks missing from it. The EBMUD box and its brand-new lid had also been completely destroyed. I was extremely concerned because, as far as I could tell, there had been no proper utility-location process before the work was done. Had a utility line been hit, the consequences could have been far more serious. I contacted Alejandro and told him this was unacceptable. He said he would send someone out to clean everything up. Once again, they didn't show when they said they would. When someone finally came out and started removing the waste, we discovered that the stump hadn't even been removed below sidewalk level. I had specifically been told it would be taken approximately two feet down so we could eventually plant another tree. Alejandro acknowledged my disappointment and said he would come back and make it right. The same worker eventually returned--again, not at the time promised. Unfortunately even more damage was done to the sidewalk. This time, debris and waste were also spread throughout my lawn, burying plants in the process.Once again, I came home and had to clean up their mess myself. At this point, Alejandro has repeatedly told me he wants to make things right, but despite multiple opportunities, he has not followed through. No meaningful repair, no call, and no appearance. Mistakes can happen in any business. What matters is how you handle them afterward. I gave this company several opportunities to correct the problems, and instead I've been left with property damage, additional cleanup, damaged landscaping, and a job that wasn't completed as promised.

The small project was to take a pittosporum down about 5 feet and enhance the canopy shape. They did a very nice job on this. Meanwhile, the bigger project was being done by the rest of the crew. We have a very large Monterey Cypress. It needed to be cleared or dead branches, a good deal of weight, and a large lateral "window" created to allow a clear view from a back deck. With guys on ropes and a guy on the cherry picker truck (bucket truck), they go the job done. All of this was completed in an afternoon and within about a week of my contacting them. Additionally, I enjoyed interacting with the crew and with Willy. Certainly worth getting an estimate!

I tried to cut down a tall maple tree on the border of a property myself. It was near houses and a…read morepower line ran straight through it, so I couldn't just fell it down. At first, it looked like I could do it. The bottom branches went down easily to a pole saw. Then I had to start climbing ladders, and then onto roofs to reach more branches. Holding a long pole saw overhead while maintaining balance on a roof is dangerous and tiring. On the third day it was time to cut the super high branches. The only way we could do it was with a Arborist sling slot, and alot of rope rigging and a rope saw. It was a headache and the equipment seemed expensive. Thankfully Willy's Tree service drove by and saw us struggling and took pity on us. We negotiated a fair price based on the work we had already done, and what we were quoted from other arborists (which was so high that it lead us to try it on our own originally). He said he would be back in two hours, but actually ended up late. I'm not going to dock any points for this because I knew we were a side job after his main job, and it was spontaneously scheduled. After his other job was over, he came over with his crew, a bucket truck, and a wood chipper that eats 12 inch logs like potato chips. And the entire job was done in the time that it would have taken me to cut 1 branch. At the end of the day, as his crew drove away, I was thankful that they came in and helped at a very fair price. So lesson learned. Save yourself the headache of expensive equipment, dangerous risk to life and limb, and call in a professional like Willy's Tree Service.

We had Jose from Vega's Tree Service out to look at some dying hedges and chose to have them plant…read morereplacements. Jose and his crew did a good job. Based on that job, we had Jose come back to price planting of sago palms and trimming trees/bushes/hedges. His price sounded good so we scheduled a one-day job for the work. On the scheduled Tuesday, a crew of three arrived (but not Jose to lead the work). We had to explain to the lead what we wanted done (same as we had explained to Jose before). The lead did not appear to understand us completely. The lead even FaceTimed with Jose for clarification. Apparently, that didn't make it any clearer for the lead...as evidenced by the crew's work. During the first three hours, the crew only managed to plant the sago palms...half of them planted too deep in depressions. They ran out of soil. The lead found a bag on my property and asked if they could use it. After I told him no, he used it anyway and said he misunderstood me. One guy also had to leave to buy more soil for the sagos. After I complained to Jose, the crew provided a replacement bag of soil. The crew trimmed the palm trees and hedges ok. They, however, botched the rest of their work. They butchered the bushes, fruit trees and other trees. They only completed about have the work and didn't cleanup at the end of their day...saying they'd be back on Friday. We feel it is unacceptable for them to have left the job site in such a state...even if they planned to return. The crew also broke a yard lantern. Not sure if we can get a replacement. We cancelled their Friday return and only paid them for the work completed. We are not satisfied with either the partial job done or the price charged for that partial job. It's crap. Vega Tree Service clearly had a more important job elsewhere and sent an inexperienced/subpar lead and crew to do our job. Poor customer service. We will not be using Vega's Tree Service again. We also cannot recommend them to other customers.

Jose came out and was extremely conscientious and discussed ways we could keep the willow if we wanted. He even gave us different quotes to reflect our options. We decided removal was the best choice, and he was flexible in his quote to come closer to other companies I spoke with. The crew arrived right on time and were extremely efficient. I was worried the willow would be difficult to safely take down, but they were very safe in climbing the tree. They also cut the oaks completely back from hanging over our roof, and ground multiple stumps we had around our yard. They were finished in less than 5 hours and cleaned the worksite very well - they even cleared a brush pile we had from some trimming we had done ourselves the week before. I'm very pleased with the work Madriz did, and would absolutely use them again. We have a lot of future projects in mind that they would be a great fit for.

I made it clear to my…read moreneighbor that my trees were not to be trimmed (though branches reaching into their yard are fair game) and that I did not grant access to my yard for liability reasons. On the day of the work, I stayed home from work to make sure my trees were not damaged. The team lead climbed from my neighbor's tree onto my tree (the trunk of which is several feet inside my property line). I asked him to please exit my property, because he was standing on a very precarious branch and this is a liability issue if he were to fall or the branch were to break causing property damage. He proceeded to yell back at me that he's allowed to be there by my neighbor. I said no, I'm the homeowner and I did not give you permission to enter my yard. We had a heated exchange and he called me crazy multiple times. This was very stressful and unnecessary. I had to get my neighbor involved. I would not use this company if you want to maintain civil relationships with your neighbors.

It was a casual low pressure convo throughout the morning and finally called to get the deal done and set up for the delivery of 5cu yds I needed. Good communication by txt about the upcoming delivery and when the truck arrived, I was off-site but had the area prepped and the driver dropped it off perfectly on the tarp. I had a great experience and the soil is great so far, seeds already sprouting! Will be back for more materials!

On a recent windy day, I had a rather large 30' branch fracture and come down from a Pine tree I have, and needed someone to come out and cut it up and haul it away. I proceeded to email, as well as leave phone messages for at least 6 different local tree service companies asking for estimates. "Ponderosa Tree Service" called me the next day yet I never heard back from the other 5 companies! Geez... After speaking with Ponderosa, they gave me an appointment day and time, which fit my schedule, and told me Kerry would be writing the estimate. The day of the appointment, Kerry showed up at 3 PM, the exact time we had scheduled and was very knowledgeable, professional and at the same time, extremely nice, making me feel very at ease and relaxed. He looked over the job took some notes, told me the exact type of pine I had, an Italian Stone Pine, and said he would email me estimate later that day. After Kerry left, about two hours later I checked my email and he had already sent me a detailed and reasonable priced estimate. I sent the estimate along with two others I finally managed to get to my insurance company and was informed a few days later that they had chosen one of the other company's estimates to do the work, not Ponderosa! So, you're probably thinking, why am I writing a review for Ponderosa when Ponderosa didn't even get or do the job?? Simple... I am almost 62 years old and over those past 62 years, I have dealt with hundreds of companies that offer all kinds of services. Every single one of them, except one, I have been "spot on" at knowing which ones are going to offer and give the absolute best service with no BS. I determine this by first scheduling an estimate to be done and then paying close attention to the scheduling process, and their reliability to "suit up and show up", Ponderosa received 5 stars. Then I pay attention to the estimator's attitude, his or her knowledge of the service and their ability to answer any questions I may have, easily and honestly. Lastly and most importantly, is their willingness to work with you and make you feel relaxed and confident that the job is in the right hands, Ponderosa received 5+ stars. 99.9% of the time, these are all excellent signs of how the company as a whole also does business. Now, I don't know why the insurance company didn't choose Ponderosa, and I had no say in the matter. However, I do know one thing, the next time I need a tree removed, or planted, pruned, trimmed, a consultation from an Arborist, or anything that has to do with trees, "Ponderosa Tree Service" will be the first number I call and I highly recommend you do the very same! I'm now a happy camper and impressed with the results, so I wrote them this note of appreciation: Good Morning Benjamin, I like to give a big Thank You to everyone at Ponderosa Tree Service. Lydia called me yesterday at work saying that there was an open slot. I was thinking that this was going to happen next week so that I could be there, but the opportunity opened. By phone, Francisco consulted with me as to what I was looking for and in turn, advised me on what could be expected. When I got home, my jaw dropped in amazement to see a nice looking pruned tree. One that is much better before it grew out of control. The job was done with the surroundings left clean and everything intact. Last night, for the first time in ages, there is light shining into the corner of backyard from the street light above. Very nice effect. I'll take care of the invoice immediately once I receive it. I think Ponderosa Tree Service is the best! I have a little oasis of trees around my house in El Cerrito, and I have hired Ponderosa many times over the last 10 years to do very big pruning jobs, as well as to remove large failing trees. Their arborists (Kerry Bliss, Michael, Craig) are timely, super knowledgeable, and, most importantly, very good listeners. They listen carefully to what I want and don't want, and make sure that is conveyed to the crew. And the tree trimming foreman and crew are very friendly, quick, efficient, and careful (and amazing at climbing trees!) Their office staff is also great. ...With other tree companies before I found Ponderosa, I was often shocked and very unhappy with the work they did (they often cut too much or damaged other plants), but with Ponderosa, I'm always amazed at how much foliage/vegetation they can remove while protecting the surrounding delicate plants, and leaving things looking great. They also did an awesome big job for my father in Alameda. The other thing is, over the years, they have done pruning or tree removal jobs while I've been at work, and it's always gone well. Ponderoas is also very good with dealing with neighbors, and even did a little free trimming for them. I give Ponderosa 5 five big stars! read more

From the first call to Ponderosa Tree Service, to the time the guys drove away after the job was complete, I was totally impressed. I needed 2 Monterey Pine trees removed from my property and the whole process could not have gone any smoother. The estimate appointment was set up conveniently and Michael was even early to the site to take a look at the project. I was so impressed with his efficiency - estimate and insurance forms and a printer in his truck - that I hired them on the spot. 3 days later, the team arrived and took down the two trees safely, professionally...and in less than an hour! They even took care of traffic control and swept up the dust. The street looked cleaner when they left than before they arrived. They were also very reasonably priced, the lowest of 4 quotes. It's not often that I feel I get excellent service at a great price, but I'm one happy customer. We had several trees trimmed and shaped and five small oaks removed. I am very pleased with the work Ponderosa Tree Service did. I chose them because Michael Veneziano, who came out to do the estimate, seemed to really pay attention to what I wanted. (I might be a 10 on the scale of "picky" when it comes to pruning.) The guys who did the work were equally attentive and checked with me throughout the process to make sure they were doing what I wanted, but had aesthetically appropriate suggestions to make of their own. Also, they were clearly being very careful to not step on any plants or kick over any pots or damage any art objects, which is quite a feat in our garden! We've hired Ponderosa Tree service twice so far, and both times they did excellent work at a reasonable price. We first hired them last year to top and shape a few of our tall backyard trees, which they did perfectly. Recently, we had them back again for a more substantial inspection and pruning of two mature oaks that grow in very close proximity to our and our neighbor's houses. Again, they did top-notch work. Everyone we dealt with at Ponderosa Tree, from the arborist to the tree trimming crew to the front office was prompt, professional, knowledgable, and considerate to our needs as well as our neighbors' needs, again, for a reasonable price. Ponderosa Tree gave me excellent service. I had a huge Deodar Cedar Tree in my front yard. I loved the tree but it was not the right place for such a beautiful giant. Kerry Bliss came promptly to give me an estimate. He gave me his professional advice and explained the scope of the work. His manner inspired confidence. He was knowledgeable yet easy-going. When the work was scheduled, they were prompt, thorough and left the place very clean. The office staff, Robert and Benjamin provided excellent service. I used Ponderosa once in the past for a small project and decided to call Michael for a much bigger project I had this time. A small jungle of trees surrounds my front patio area which blocks out the light and traps in the dank. Michael made some recommendations and the work was scheduled quickly. The crew (a small army more like it) arrived on time, worked quickly and cleaned up the mountains of branches they cut from the trees and swept up all the sawdust and leafs. We needed help with fire inspection/compliance in Oakland. We called 8 companies for quotes and left message with all. Ponderosa didn't get a message - they answered the call at 4pm on a Friday afternoon!!! Made the appointment to come out and quote. For our actual tree trimming appointment, they were on time, courteous, SAFE, clean, friendly and professional. They got everything done very quickly all in the same day, left the yard cleaned up with no debris and left everything in good order. We live in Rhode Island and we rent our home in Berkeley. It is very important to us to maintain the house and yard. We have fragrant myrtle bushes, an apple tree, a lemon tree, plum tree, pittosporum, several hedges, etc. For three or four years now we have had Ponderosa Tree Service come and do all the pruning. We just used Ponderosa to tame a gigantic coastal oak in our front yard. They were able to shape and prune the tree such that it looks fantastic, is clear from our roof, and won't endanger the adjacent power lines. Assessed the situation and told me my options for tree removal, just a cut down or cut down + trunk removal. I opted for the latter. His price came in lower than someone else I had come and give me a quote, which I was surprised. My smallish pine tree (15 - 20 ft tall) was cut, stump removed, and cleaned up in 2.5 hours. Leo double checked if I wanted the hole to be left open where the stump was removed or cover it back up with dirt before they finished the project. I opted for them to cover the hole back up since I'm not ready to put in a new tree. Communication was good, he let me know when he was 5 mins out from my house and we were in communication about scheduling. Would definitely hire again.
