Okay this is what I like in a bar! Came in for a drink and late lunch kinda dinner thing on a saturday. Happy Hour: 7 days a week? 4-7pm sat-thur, 4-9pm friday. This is an auto five stars! Just kidding, but the happy hour host a number of house cocktails like their frozen mojito, froze pina colada, house punch, and a few others for $4-5 and and wells for the same range. Also lonestars or pbr for $2 and select beer for $3. Okay, so concerning price we had 6 drinks and a pizza for 2 and spent a total of $36. Basically, come during happy hour and you can have a good time for very little money. Drinks: They're not relentlessly strong but they get the job done. The frozen mojito is really their staple and is quite tasty, definitely try this if its your first time! The pina colada was CREAMMMYYY! So if thats what's you like, then thats what you get. I think I enjoyed the pina the most of all the drinks. Perhaps because of the sun on the lovely patio. Bloody marry, they'll make it, but its not their specialty by any means. Oh P.S. the "floater" on the mojito is just sangria poored on top, I didn't really like the sour it added. I personally felt the mojito tasted better without it, and the $1 charge could have stayed in my pocket. Ambiance: Anywhere with couches, mood lighting, projectors playing movies on walls, and a patio gets my stamp of approval. The playlist was giving me 2012 college freshmen pays for pandora with financial aid money. But this was perfect for just chilling on a saturday afternoon when it was busy at all. Bar tender: I cant remember his name but he told us all about the place and seemed eager to be serving up drinks. Food: Okay so the guy told us straight up that the only thing frozen was the crust... you could tell but it really didn't hurt the pizza.. I mean pizza is pizza. We got the spicy chicken and it was good for what it was. Of course not Franks Pizza, but a solid pizza for chilling at a bar. How the hell have i NOT reviewed The Flat yet? I mean, sure I haven't gone back in years (up until last week), but they still have the yummiest thin-crust pizza (for the price), the best frozen mojitos, a diverse crowd, artsy/creative vibe and some of the coolest underground DJs in the city. I was there on a Monday night when Houston's own The ARE was spinning; for those who don't know, The ARE/Russel Gonzalez helped to produce/write songs for Keyshia Cole's last album. Legit DJs, y'all. Circa 2007/2008, The Flat was our go-to spot for a chill night and maybe a few dance parties here and there. Just check out Vanessa R or Crystal L's reviews. Ah, good times. Fast forward to present day and not a damn thing has changed. It's like they somehow seemed to avoid the "overly trendy" crowds that attempt to ruin Midtown, Washington and now Upper Kirby. I enjoyed this place. It's a very chilled lounge. Lots of early 90s music. There were paintings on the wall and LCD tvs. They seemed to be serving food throughout the night. The couches were soft and comfy. This place looks tiny but the patio in the back is actually pretty big. The bartenders were awesome. Fun to talk to and have a VERY heavy pour. When I finally found this place...YES it is super hard to find by GPS...I had a blast! It is a small unassuming building in a residential neighborhood...that is why it's hard to find. There was plenty of FREE street parking. Once inside, the DJ was spinning some New Edition to get the party started. Drinks were flowing and good times were had. On a Friday night the place was not too crowded. Patrons were coming and going. I definitely will return. This was my first time here on a Wednesday for Reggae/Afro Beat night. The DJ(Docta) was on point! He took us to Africa, Jamaica, Trinidad then back to the "MotherLand"!! I never dutty wine and worked my hips so hard in a long time. (LOL!) Just about everyone there was dancing to the tunes he was spinning. This is an all around chill spot! First time coming to The Flat after hearing some decent things about it. First of all, the place was semi easy to find. Parking is a challenge but not entirely terrible. The outside of the flat is covered in graffiti art which is actually gnarly. Inside is kind of small but outside has a nice size patio. Went on a Friday night and was able to find a table. Atmosphere is nice. They had two DJ's, one inside and one outside. Both had some good jams going. Drink prices are fair. Similar to just about anything else on that side out town. They have a menu but none of us ate anything so no comment on that for now. Overall, its a good place to come grab a drink, mingle and see whats leads from there. Best frozen mojitos in Houston (for several years in a row, apparently). I haven't had frozen mojitos anywhere else, but the ones at The Flat are delicious. And only $4 before 9 PM! It's probably a good thing I'm not spending the next few months in the Houston humidity, or I would probably frequent The Flat a little too often for this fantastic summer treat. Randomly found ourselves here on a Friday night after going to a local concert. Very cool lounge/bar. Interior decor reminds me of someone who loves mid century modern. There was a DJ playing a great mix of music that had driving beats but wasn't necessarily deafening. The bar area got packed but they have a very spacious patio that offered a quieter setting compared to the interior, so we had options. Only complaint was the bartender made an absolutely awful Moscow Mule, but could have just been swamped. He forgot the ginger beer and it was just booze and syrup. I know they also host pop up dinners once a month which i hope to drop in on in the future. I heard that a chef from Benjy's, Geoff Hundt, had a great one there recently. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a hip kitschy bar with some fun music choices. read more

It's usually a mixed crowd every night and music also varies by night. It's one of my favorite places because there's never a cover and it's always come as you are. No pretentiousness whatsoever. Some of the city's best DJs and some out of town DJs often come here to spin. Htown classic to me! My only gripe is that I don't have the patience sometimes to deal with the slow bartenders. And why isn't there more than one bartender on peak days like Friday HH? I'd be happy to volunteer my services if it meant that short girls could get noticed and served faster. Wow! I'm not sure how I've never visited this place! Everything about it was so much fun. The colorful building is the cutest. BUT THE BARTENDER (Ronal) was by far my fav experience. His drinks (all of them) was amazing, I had the Lavender Lemon Drop & Green Tea Shot (I didn't get a pic - it was so good I forgot to snap one)! He is so creative, knowledgeable, a true mixologist and very friendly too. He alone would be the reason my husband and become forever customers here. Now, let's talk about their pizza ... I can't lie, I was a little hesitant to order food only because majority of the time (that I've experienced), when the drinks are as good as they were, the food is not so good, well, this place tossed that thought all the way out of the window! Our pizza was so good! Really really good! It was fresh and flavorful! I would highly recommend! I'm a huge foodie, but out of all the restaurants I've been to across a dozen states and many years, I can say this place is probably the worst service experience I've ever had. Firstly, the restaurant has it so all orders, food and drinks, are made through a single bartender. I arrived with my group at 6:30, 30 minutes before happy hour (50% off pizzas) so I imagined we'd have plenty of time to get our orders in. The bartender took the rest of my group's orders first as I was still looking through the menu. But instead of taking my order next, she moved on to the party to the left of us. No biggie, so 2 people in my group left to find seats and 1 person stayed to wait with me. The bartender, instead of taking everyone's order and putting it in at once, makes each of the person's drinks before moving on. Thus it took a good 10 minutes before she reached me. However, instead of taking my order as I was the next person in sequential order, she skipped over me and took the next person's order. I didn't want to be rude and interrupt her when she had already asked the next person for their order. She kept moving on to all the people to the right of me, taking their orders and making their drinks and another 25 minutes later I decided to call out and ask if I can order. She apologized and assumed I had already ordered because my friends did (why would i be waiting standing and looking forward for 30 minutes if so?) This all would be fine, but by now it was 7:03 and I asked if we could still get the happy hour discount, and she refused saying the system wouldn't let her--despite her admitting it was her mistake that she passed over me and kept me waiting. I don't understand why she couldn't make an exception since it was only THREE MINUTES past happy hour. In addition, the PIZZA restaurant was apparently out of cheese, so I'd have to wait another 30+ minutes to get my order. I definitely do not recommend this place. They desperately need to change the way they take orders or hire another bartender. read more

I came here on a Thursday evening for their happy hour, and I really enjoyed myself. The place was fairly empty, but according to the bartender, it was because everyone was at the Rodeo Kick-off. When you walk-in, there is an empty dancefloor and DJ on the left (the DJ was playing some nice, relaxing trance-like music), close to the floor seating/couches on the right, and a bar right in front. There was plenty of space to sit down, and its a great atmosphere to just hangout and talk with friends. As for food, I got their frozen mojito which was absolutely delicious! Best mojito I've ever had, and I would go back all the time just for that drink! My friend and I also ordered two flatbreads, both of which were very tasty. They were really large flatbreads, so if you are not hungry, only order one and expect to take home leftovers. read more

Be careful using your debit or credit card. I went on two separate occasions within a month and a tip was added both times. I like to tip in cash; however, staff decided to add an extra tip. It's really about the principle and not the amount of added tip. Sadly I had to go through my bank for assistance because management offered me to go back and get a free drink or overcharged amount in cash. Small spot and virtually no parking which I am not a fan of at all. Thus causing you to park on shady streets and walking a ways to get there. Once inside you are like boom in the dance floor. Music is a hit or miss depending on your preference. Decent priced drinks and the outside area is nice for a date night or small social gathering. I don't think the nearby neighbors like looking out to this club behind their high rise home. Which makes me wonder how long this will last. My best friend and I stumbled upon this gem on a recommendation from a Houston native, we were so glad that we did. The Flat in nestled in a converted house in the Montrose area. It's cozy inside, with a huge patio. However, since it was super humid the evening we went, we stayed inside mostly. Comfy sofas, and chairs--two DJs were spinning some deep house, and they were jamming! From checking out their instagram, they have different musical theme nights from time to time. I fell in love with their frozen sangria, I've been researching recipes to make my own version, BTW...lol. Bestie was a big fan of their beer selection. I understand that they do serve food, but the kitchen was closed, by the time we'd arrived. The crowd is here is a melting pot-- all ages, orientations, and races were represented, and we all had a fine time. That's what I enjoy most about lounges, everyone is there to unwind a bit, and leave the drama at home. The only downside was the parking situation. There isn't a lot, so you have to find parking on the street. Next time, we'd probably just take an Uber, etc. My best friend loved the place and enjoyed herself just as much as I did. Not sure how I keep ending up at this place on a Tuesday... but maybe I know it's because it won't be crowded. Every weeknight I've come, the place has been totally empty. But I'm okay with it, because it's good for having a nice chat. The frozen mojitos are amazing. Deliciously fresh and not overly icy. Have them put a shot of on top and it really makes it. So good. I've also tried the banh mi pizza and banh mi burger. Pretty good, decent options if you need something to help soak up the alcohol. I really need to come back on a weekend and see how hopping this place gets, but for now, I'll keep going back for those crazy delicious mojitos. Also, on a random note, it was really cold inside when I went, but I have the temperature regulating abilities of a turtle, so I might be overly sensitive to that. read more

The Flat is sort of an odd duck. It's not located next to any of the other bars in the Montrose/midtown area and instead from the outside looks like one of those neighborhood dentists' offices where the dentist is near retirement and has a home dental clinic. It's a cozy little place, but much like going to someone's house, you have to park on the street which is not the easiest thing given Commonwealth is not only a busy street, but it's a weird turn where people not from the area can get confused. I was at the flat on a Monday night which I guess is more of an industry night, but the place was pretty packed so I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun parking on a weekend. It's kind of a personal habit of mine to take off one star for not having any parking for customers. The Flat also has a nice backyard/patio type deal but again, you're in the neighbor's backyard so you can't talk loud and what fun is that? I thought the drinks both mixed and the frozen thing they have were a little on the weak side too, but not too bad. Anyhoo...give them a try if you want something a little different. Man. This place is bad. First off, the terrible watered down graffiti at the entrance from some Hipster Montrose HSPVA graduate is just bad. Next, the inside is TINY, and feels like a lounge you'd see in some 1998 Trip Hop documentary. The prices are a little dumb, but that's not the real problem at the bar. Service is GAAAARBAGE. Rude bartenders, always have bad attitudes, and constantly just skip people to hook up their friends. Plus, there's always something going on with the temperature in that place. Mostly, it's just hot as hell. The backyard is meh, whatever. I don't know what happened to that place. It used to have its finger on the pulse of what is cool in Houston. But then it started taking itself TOO seriously, and pushed out the crowd that helped give it its name, to cater to the art snob crowd that doesn't exist. And by the time they started to realize that, they had been dicks to their regulars for too long. The crowds you see there now are just people who could never get in before cause of how packed it'd be when it was cool, and some hoping the glory days will return. Out of all the places I went to during my trip to Houston, this was the absolute best place I went to! We went on a Friday night were they were playing awesome 90's hip hop and R&B. I've been here before and I'm in the industry and always recommend people to check the flat out. Lately the music has been sub par and we ordered a pepperoni pizza without jalapeños and it still came out with jalapeños we kindly asked to have it remade the food runner gave is attitude about it and when we got our new pizza it was clear all they did was pick the jalapeños off and sprinkle some more cheese. We still ate it and didn't complain but it's the concept. The crust also just tasted like I was eating crackers. Very disappointed. read more

I had only drinks here, but each was good. While the portion of liquor was adequate, the drinks could have dialed up the flavor a bit. We went during a down time and the bar tender was friendly, but appeared to be inexperienced, measuring out each ingredient with the precision you'd find in a French bakery. Ok, someone please tell me if maybe we went on an off night or something because I left The Flat a few Saturday's ago feeling like I haven't missed out on anything. I mean for real, someone please tell me because almost all of my fellow Yelp friends with reviews here gave this place 5 stars. I love that they have several frozen drinks and I did partake in a few of their famous mojitos which were amazing, but we didn't enjoy the house music. I was hoping that the dj would spin some good old school jams, but this particular night all that was left to our ears was bass-filled instrumentals. My ex first introduced me to this place a year ago and it immediately became my favorite hang out in Houston. When I don't feel like dealing with the Midtown crowd (ya'll know what I mean) I make my way to the Flat. There is no snooty doorguy that gives guys a hard time to get in, not dress code really so you can show up in flop flops and you good, or you can show up in a dress like I usually do and still not feel outta place. The bartenders are great...very nice..so tip them! They have really cool art all over the place as well as furniture and the patio is pretty big. Frozen mojito's is what I come here for...well that and the pizza!! You gotta try their pizza...it's pretty fantastic, or if you just want something light to snack on try the hummus. The orientation of the entrance of The Flat in relation to the curve of Commonwealth makes me nervous as both a driver and a pedestrian crossing the street. Since not everyone who drives down the street knows of this great little bar's existence, there are a number of speeding cars. Likewise, there are many drunken targets for whom you must slam on your brakes when heading south of West Gray. Our second OYE was here. Okay, correction. Our first Farrah OYE was here. That's a minor technicality, so I'm just going to skip that altogether for the sake of time. The only reason I mention it really is that I had no idea of The Flat's existence before the invite. Suddenly "the random stupid-drunk girl who'd been wandering in the street in front of that apartment complex" a year prior, didn't seem so random. She was leaving the bar, albeit stupidly staggering on the wrong side of a curve in the street. I almost hit her, and she slurring incoherent words at me. Stupid drunk. The bar is a converted leasing office of an apartment complex, and the patio is perhaps the courtyard. Light bulb, right? The interior is nice, however I never spend much time there. It resembles a leasing office (which creeps me out a bit), plus I prefer the patio/courtyard. It's roomy. There are many tables, chairs, and benches. It's relatively quiet, so you can hear yourself and others while having conversations. Oh, and you are not overpowered by the DJ. Yes, I said it. People rave about the DJ here, but well, I don't like DJs. I'm a juke box, live music, or decent CD selection sort of person. It's a great bar to stop off for a drink or two, but for some reason, I don't think I've ever spent more than an hour or two here...even with a large group. Not certain why, really.
