I've been here before but I didn't remember that until I arrived. The Flat is great! The parking sucks, but it's great. Oh, the DJ played the same genre of music the whole time, it also sounded like the same song. Some techno or something with no words. Who knows. They have happy hour, even on the weekend from 4-7pm! That's beautiful. They have discounted drinks and 1/2 off their pizzas. The exact discounts are located on their menu. I ordered the house special pizza, which was delicious. My friend ordered a basic pepperoni pizza. Both were $6 dollars. And we both had frozen sangrias. The frozen sangrias, which were $5, were everything! Now I've never had a frozen sangria, baby it was all that! I will definitely be returning back so that I can drink several of them and partake in the happy hour a little longer than I was able to. Too good! The service was good too. If you want water, you can get it yourself which is great so you don't have to stand and wait at the bar. The parking is the only downfall. This is truly an eclectic place. So many different types of people, great music, lots of open seating and styles. You can choose indoor or outdoor area to sit. One bar area, small dance floor, open bathroom concept. They had good mixed drinks and specials. There are strategic tv's placed around the area outside. Parking is a bit difficult due to residential restrictions but it's worth the walk if you have to make one from your car. read more

Our neighborhood gem. My husband and I just moved to the area in February after living in the 'burbs for the past 12 years, and The Flat is a perfect representation of our neighborhood. It's welcoming, chill, electric, diverse and conveniently located to my hizouse. I really appreciate the mixed crowd. A couple of added bonuses: they make delicious pizza and offer a discount for those who live in the area and show their ID. For my hip-hop heads, Friday is better than Saturday, as they play more old school and classic beats. There's a little too much fist bumpin on Saturday (for me). read more

Worst place in Montrose I've ever been to, the drinks are so mediocre and the ambiance used to be cool but after I met the owner and spoke to me and my friends so rudely and found after the fact that he was the owner really surprised me. The hospitality just was not there and my friends were coming from out of town and we wanted to dance, we happened to move the chair near a table and the owner just yelled at us and cursed us out because he said there was a speaker under the table, which is completely understandable but theres ways also to communicate stuff and that was just not the way. Food, Service, and Ambience is Amazing. I wish I could give this place a 5 star but the music was extremely loud. After the live jazz band, there's a dj that starts. It was only 10 people in the place and there were request to turn down the music. The dj nodded sure he will turn it down but did not. Another dj came on and several request were made and the bar tender on staff was even notified. Once again the dj said sure then immediately walked over and told the other person in. The dj booth to crank it up even louder. At this point there may have been 12 people in the entire bar. I've been going to the flat for years!! Never ever had a bad experience here but decided to stop by last night 3/15/24 and had the worst experience. I ordered two old fashions with Buffalo trace, the male bartender working poured bourbon and small ice cubes in a rocks glass and stirred it two times and gave it to me like that, no bitters no orange peel nothing. Okay sir if you didn't know how to make one then don't charge me for one and don't take my order and pretend. I asked him if he could make me an actual old fashion and he said "we don't really make old fashions this is a club" lol uhh this not no club sir! Anyway, I told him I always get them there and last time I received wonderful old fashions from a bartender that was working last time I went ... his rebuttal was a very sassy "that's great! Congratulations" at this point I just want what I paid for so I ask if there is anyone that has time to make my drink? he goes over and whispers something to the female bartender, she eventually comes over and ask me what's up I tell her and she does nothing about it and tells me they really don't have time to make an old fashion. Now they weren't busy and it was maybe us and 7 other people at the bar and not everyone was even ordering. I asked her what time her last call was and she said 1:50 which was PLENTY of time before that so I'm not sure why they were being so lazy! This dynamic duo had madd attitude and had zero interests in making a loyal customer happy... What a versatile place! I'll admit, my first visit here left much to be desired but after coming back a few more times, I have grown to appreciate how you never seem to get a continuing replay of the same scene. Different nights will get you different types of music (i.e. soul, hip hop, jazz and what can only be described as church dance music) and even a different crowd of patrons. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the live jazz band and people who came to listen to the band brought various instruments and joined in with them in jam sessions. Outside, there is a heated patio with a set up of tables and chairs. Great area to enjoy good conversation and ignore the "Respect your neighbors, Please keep the noise down" sign. Even the seating set up changes. On jazz nights they turn all the couches and chairs in one direction so that the patrons can better appreciate the band. On certain nights, old movies are projected on the wall as additional entertainment. They have one bar with very efficient bartenders and reasonable prices. What are words should I use to describe this place? Hmmmm, let's see... Eclectic, diverse, dim, noisy, comforting, cozy? That might do it. We stopped in here looking for some food on the way home from an art show. Never even heard of the place before but Yelp lead us here. I had a different vision in my head before I walked in, so I was a little unsettled about staying. But once we determined there was a quitter patio out back we decided to stay. While they do have food here, the menu is restricted to a few pizzas, fries and some wings. As a vegetarian, pizza and fries were the only options. The pizza wasn't half bad really and it hit the spot since I was so famished. But I don't think food is their thing really. The interior was pumping with loud music being turned out by a DJ. It was dimly lit with soft colored lights all around the place. There are a few seats at the bar and lots of small intimate sections with chairs and couches for lounging with your love(s). There was one lady behind the bar, and while she didn't even crack a smile, she did whip out drinks in rapid time. It's order at the bar too and get a table number. The patio was spacious and inviting. Certainly better for sipping drinks and having conversations since the music isn't so in your face out there. Very laid back for sure and made me feel as if we were hanging in the backyard of someone's place more than being at a bar/restaurant. As far as beverages - they had a nice selection. I really enjoyed the moonshine sangria! Enough in fact to have two. Did it hurt they were on special for 4 bucks? Certainly not! Now that I have a better idea of what this place is about, I'd come back. Frogger! That's what it is like trying to get to The Flat. I barely survived getting to this bar! I parked across Commonwealth. Oh My! I wonder how many tipsy patrons have gotten squished by the cars whizzing by. Commonwealth is a curved three lane road with no stop signs close to The Flat. If you park across the street, you are taking your life in your own hands. I came here for a UYE (unofficial Yelp event) to celebrate Holly's birthday. This was the second time I had been to The Flat. The first time it was quite a hip scene with lots of different groups of people. This time there were two groups of people 1) our group of 8 people celebrating a birthday and 2) a large group of people with name tags on who were part of some outdoors group. Even with only those two groups the place was filled. It's a small bar that gets loud quickly. The food looked good. The pizza was ok, but nothing to write home about. The dumplings were quickly eaten and everyone seemed to love them. There are only two bathroom stalls, one for men and one for women. A bar that serves alcohol has a single bathroom for women? The bar is hard to find... people I know have tried to find it, gave up, and moved on. It feels like it should be for people who can walk there (safely) from the neighborhood. He provides excellent service and he really knows how to make the best espresso martinis. The pizza here is stellar as well so if you're hungry i definitely recommend that. read more

I dropped in with a few friends last week. It was my first time there and it seems like a chill place. Parking is hard, you park wherever you can in the neighborhood. Lol We stayed by the bar area most of the night but there was only 1 bar chair when we arrived? They ended up taking it and we had to stand. There was seating over toward the front door area if you wanted to sit. Off to the side of the bar was a door where people kept going in and out. It turns out that there is an outside patio! It is very nice with seating and its covered with a bar outside also. There was no room to sit so we retreated back inside. There was a DJ setup in the front area and he played a variety of music. It wasn't so loud that you could actually converse without screaming. We will probably visit again and try to get patio seating. It seemed like a very nice ambiance out there. read more

Cozy outdoor seating with heaters and tvs if you're looking to catch the game or just have a quiet night with friends and family. Okay this is what I like in a bar! Came in for a drink and late lunch kinda dinner thing on a saturday. Happy Hour: 7 days a week? 4-7pm sat-thur, 4-9pm friday. This is an auto five stars! Just kidding, but the happy hour host a number of house cocktails like their frozen mojito, froze pina colada, house punch, and a few others for $4-5 and and wells for the same range. Also lonestars or pbr for $2 and select beer for $3. Okay, so concerning price we had 6 drinks and a pizza for 2 and spent a total of $36. Basically, come during happy hour and you can have a good time for very little money. Drinks: They're not relentlessly strong but they get the job done. The frozen mojito is really their staple and is quite tasty, definitely try this if its your first time! The pina colada was CREAMMMYYY! So if thats what's you like, then thats what you get. I think I enjoyed the pina the most of all the drinks. Perhaps because of the sun on the lovely patio. Bloody marry, they'll make it, but its not their specialty by any means. Oh P.S. the "floater" on the mojito is just sangria poored on top, I didn't really like the sour it added. I personally felt the mojito tasted better without it, and the $1 charge could have stayed in my pocket. Ambiance: Anywhere with couches, mood lighting, projectors playing movies on walls, and a patio gets my stamp of approval. The playlist was giving me 2012 college freshmen pays for pandora with financial aid money. But this was perfect for just chilling on a saturday afternoon when it was busy at all. How the hell have i NOT reviewed The Flat yet? I mean, sure I haven't gone back in years (up until last week), but they still have the yummiest thin-crust pizza (for the price), the best frozen mojitos, a diverse crowd, artsy/creative vibe and some of the coolest underground DJs in the city. I was there on a Monday night when Houston's own The ARE was spinning; for those who don't know, The ARE/Russel Gonzalez helped to produce/write songs for Keyshia Cole's last album. Legit DJs, y'all. Circa 2007/2008, The Flat was our go-to spot for a chill night and maybe a few dance parties here and there. Just check out Vanessa R or Crystal L's reviews. Ah, good times. Fast forward to present day and not a damn thing has changed. It's like they somehow seemed to avoid the "overly trendy" crowds that attempt to ruin Midtown, Washington and now Upper Kirby. I enjoyed this place. It's a very chilled lounge. Lots of early 90s music. There were paintings on the wall and LCD tvs. They seemed to be serving food throughout the night. The couches were soft and comfy. This place looks tiny but the patio in the back is actually pretty big. The bartenders were awesome. Fun to talk to and have a VERY heavy pour. When I finally found this place...YES it is super hard to find by GPS...I had a blast! It is a small unassuming building in a residential neighborhood...that is why it's hard to find. There was plenty of FREE street parking. Once inside, the DJ was spinning some New Edition to get the party started. Drinks were flowing and good times were had. On a Friday night the place was not too crowded. Patrons were coming and going. I definitely will return.
