Easy to see why the Eye Center has the absolute best eye doctors and professional staff in Eugene and Lane County. I have been a loyal patient of Dr. Hanes and Dr. Walker for years. They have done magic for me and for the friends I have pointed to their care. I am always impressed how well they take care of there patients, even the cranky ones. Recently I had a sudden serious and dangerous vision event. I called the Eye Center on a Friday afternoon. When I explained my symptoms to the wonderful receptionist she quickly spoke to Dr. Walker who had me come in immediately. When I arrived I felt like royalty. The entire staff came to my assistance quickly as a fine tuned team addressing my problem, getting me on the road to quick recovery. The doctors and every staff member saved and greatly improved my eyesight that late Friday afternoon. I spent all my childhood and most of my adult life wearing glasses and contacts, never having "perfect" vision. When I developed cataract issues I began a love affair with The Eye Center, Dr. Haines, his amazing partners and his wonderful staff. Every appointment, every procedure was smooth , successful and easy for me to understand before and celebrate after the processes were done. Eugene, Oregon is fortunate to have such superb care facilities . Now at 95 I am enjoying the most beautiful world, full of color and detail . I can read to my heart's content. Cataract surgery here destroyed my vision. They talked me into paying $3000 for laser surgery. Don't do it. Dr. Brian Walker was unable to make the laser work but would not refund my money. At 78 I had never had to wear glasses. Since the surgery, I cannot see my computer screen or read without glasses. Had they warned me that I would loose my close up and mid-range vision, I would never have done this. The office workers only concern is getting money from you. They charged my credit card in April. When I asked for a receipt they said I paid in November. Not sure if this is incompetence or what? Should I report them to the Better Business Bureau or Oregon Medical Board? read more

I want to write that I was a bit discouraged by my first appointment at the Eye Center when I got an eye exam. I was happy they respected my disability exemption from masking and the technician who saw me first was very nice and professional. There was miscommunication about contact lens prescription but I'm happy to say that there was another appt. made with the contact lens doc who is taking good care of me. After seeing Dr Kent Karren for over 15 years, I have found his new replacement, Dr Brian Walker to be inexperienced. My husband went in for a comprehensive eye exam and came out without having a refraction and set up for surgery for cataracts. After I called Dr Walkers assistant I was told he didn't need the refraction. Then what is an exam for??? Even when I was seeing Dr Karren I found the office to be very dysfunctional and unorganized. They have such a high turnover that employees are always playing catch up on their responsibilities. Too many examples to mention. Even through, the disfunction was extreme, Dr Karren was very competent. We are now going to a different opthamologist and OSHU- Casey Eye Center. Don't let these guys mess with your eyes. Excellent eye doctors, terrible billing department. I have received excellent care from The Eye Center; they found out I had Glaucoma and assisted me in treating it so it was no longer progressing, effectively saving me from a future of certain blindness, for this I am eternally grateful. However, their billing department is an absolute joke for lack of a better term; unfortunately for me, my insurance has barely covered anything I have seen The Eye Center for, meaning I owe them tons of money which is not The Eye Center's fault. What is The Eye Center's fault is their awful billing department and their means to pay said huge bill: Your options are, 1) Call and speak to their billing department, which often goes to voicemail... and 2) per their instruction, leave your credit/debit card information on their message machine and... they will update your account accordingly? (guessing on that last one, haven't tried it personally because I'm not stupid, thus don't see this as anywhere near a secure or reliable billing option). There are also multiple doctors within their building, leading me to a significant amount of confusion as to who exactly I'm paying, I just dropped like $600 on one of their doctors earlier this month, so you can imagine my confusion at waking up and finding I was turned into collections by them for about $2000 today, no warning, no idea why. I call to find out that apparently... I had paid "the surgery center", not "The Eye Center", both doctors are housed within the same building, and whenever I contact them for billing, I end up in the same place, explain that one. Regardless, this would be a great deal less confusing had I received a bill from the right place, oddly enough, the only bill I have in recent memory is the one I paid, the other, no idea, had to go digging to find out that one was not getting paid and that I was paying the other people when I was contacting the billing dept for the other and whether or not it was even legit. I am so confused that at this point that I'm actually happy to be paying the collection agency rather than The Eye Center, because at least it's all in the same place, they offer the ability to pay portions of the bill instead of the whole un-insured amount, and they actually offer a website with an online billing process that makes sense rather than literally leaving my card info on a friggin answering machine if I can't get through to the billing agent who has been there maybe 25% of the time I've called, come on Eye Center, do better. Oh and thanks sending me to collections and messing up my credit instead of sending me a notice; I'm trying to buy a house, how nice of you, I will likely be sourcing a new eye doctor purely due to the inconvenience of the billing department alone, because as stated, the care has been fantastic, but lord, their billing department is sooo bad, in my case, so bad it actually negatively impacted me. EDIT: (Found this out after the review), I tried to contact The Eye Center via their contact form located at https://www.oregoneyecenter.com/contact-request to make my concerns known to them in hopes that maybe my misfortunes could be utilized by them to improve their billing department/procedures and perhaps save another person the same headaches in the future, but that link is broken... the form never loads, so yeah. read more

I had an eyelid surgery by Dr Haines. I was extremely impressed with the results. My vision has improved and headaches are less frequent. Dr Haines is exceedingly skilled and has a great bedside manner. He goes above and beyond what an average doc will do to assure healing and alleviate any anxiety. The waiting room is generally full and the wait time for appointments is pretty long but worth it. He's the best in town. read more

Eye lid surgery was done at the Oregon Eye Surgery Center. Which is owned and operated by Dr. Haines, Dr. Karren and associates. But the "before" surgery consult is done by The Eye Center and Dr. Haines. When you get their bill they are from two different "entities". Or so your are told, even though the Eye Center and the Oregon Eye Surgery Center are housed in the same building, owned by the same doctors. All the staff run around pointing fingers at each other as if they do not know each other and have never met. Upper lids were paid by insurance but the insurance was billed $175 for lower lids that I had paid in full. The insurance did not pay, so I was billed for the $175. I was responsible for a 20% co-pay of $180, which I had paid up front $191.40. To this day I am still being billed for $355.00. As for my eye lid surgery.....My Eyes Still Hurt it has been 8 months. For the money paid ($4366 lower lids only) and the pain endured not worth it. Seek a real plastic surgeon not an eye doctor. It is worth the extra money and I am sure you will look better than I do. read more

This office is horrible. When calling to make an appointment the lady was rude. Waited 45 minutes for an eye exam. While receiving my eye exam the tech did not walk me through process. I received a bill and I have insurance. Called to give them my insurance they said okay we will submit the claim. Received another bill. Insurance states a claim was still not submitted. The eye center never a calls back. I will never go here again. I have been to a few eye doctors in Eugene and they were all wonderful. I should have never switched but this place was within walking distance. read more

I had questions about color blindness and so I decided to go to the Eye Center to get it checked out and get questions answered. The doctor was unprepared and didn't know about color blindness, they dilated my eyes before I could take colorblindness tests. I had to make a second appointment and come in and they still couldn't answer my questions. A big waste of time and money. Next time I will find a smaller, and more friendly place. read more

Watch out for this place. They took a minor concern of mine, drooping eyelids, the consequence of age and turned it into a surgery I did not need not to mention it was a complete failure performed by an inexperienced doctor who when I discussed my experience with my later eye care docs they all knew who I was referencing. I'l will also add that the support staff seemed very unhappy. All that can be said for this practice is that the hold line has the best quality sound I'v ever experienced. Saw Dr Haines recently for a medical eye problem. He was 25 min late for the appointment, and seemed to be in a hurry to leave (he had one foot out the door while I was still asking questions). His input / advice was minimal and did not improve my condition. Cost for the 10 min consult was $175. It appears that surgery is what Dr Haines is good at, and perhaps that's the only reason to see him. read more

Very unhappy with my experience here. Went in because I've been having dry eye problems for well over a year, which I told Dr. Takusagawa, and she suggested it was because of the dry weather the past couple of weeks and told me I just needed to use over-the-counter eye drops. I had to pay $300 out of pocket for that advice, a price they did not tell me about until after the appointment. As a 21 year old full-time college student with a part-time minimum wage job, three hundred dollars is a lot of money for me to be spending. Today I went to an optometrist for a second opinion, and she was shocked that Dr. Takusagawa didn't write me a prescription for a stronger eye drop and informed me that the lubricating drops recommended by the eye center would only have helped if my eyes were 1/8 as bad as they are. Extremely disappointed at the complete waste of my time and money this whole experience was for me. read more

Both my wife Carole & I have had the best of care visiting the Newport office. Dr. Haines has taken excellent preemptive and corrective care of Carole since 1995. Most recently, I had the cataract in right eye removed and am very satisfied. The left eye surgery is scheduled for Feb. 1st. Carole had both cataracts removed, and years later the scar tissue that built up, and both eyelids tucked. Dr. Haines was also instrumental in the discovery of her brain tumor while it was still small and operable. All of our eye surgeries have been done at Pacific Communities Hospital (now Samaritan PCH) in Newport. The staff is caring and efficient. We live in Seal Rock, not Yachats. read more

I waited over 45 minutes in the waiting room and 55 minutes in the exam room before I finally decided to not wait any longer. I left before seeing Dr. Haines. Definitely not an experience I wish to reiterate. My first visit here was a disaster in miscommunication. After waiting for about 20 min I finally went back for my appointment-the woman was apologetic bc she didn't know they had started scheduling 8am exams-only to then be told (after I asked if I should remove my contact lenses before the exam) that they did not "do contacts". The woman was very apologetic but was clearly frustrated by an obvious lack of communication with the scheduling staff. A ton of patients had trickled into the lobby while I was waiting and more had shown up in the 5 min I was in the exam. They promised not to bill my insurance - here's to hoping I don't have to unwind that mess. The receptionist made several inappropriate comments about my insurance coverage and how much money my spouse must make. The entire situation was highly uncomfortable and I felt anxious the whole time I was there. I will not be going near this place ever again. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Haines for 23 years! We moved away from Eugene ( living in Portland right now), but still keep visiting him as my ophtalmologist, because he is One of The Best! I just have to say that the staff here are absolutely wonderful. I had LASIK last Thursday to correct my nearsightedness and astigmatism and they couldn't have made me feel more relaxed before the procedure. Dr. Haines has made sure to answer all of my questions in every appointment, especially since I've been having some inflammation/sensitivity in my right eye since the surgery. The office, which is always very busy, has made time to see me about my painful (but properly healing) right eye three days in a row. It is very obvious that Dr. Haines and his staff really care about their patients. My vision is also AMAZING after the fast and totally painless procedure. I would recommend The Eye Center/Oregon iLASIK and Refractive to anyone interested in corrective surgery for vision. read more
