A common complaint I hear among the YGF's (that's young, gay, and fabulous) of New York is of homogeneity among the homos. Walk into any of the popular "scenester" gay places (B-Bar on a Tuesday, Hiro on Sunday, Mr. Black on a Friday, etc,) and you'll find a lot of gay men in a particular uniform: tight t-shirt (throw in a v-neck for some variety), the Diesel jeans of the moment, some cute sneakers, close cropped hair, gym-toned body, you get the picture. While the picture I've just painted may not be a bad one, it can get a little tired after a while. Thus, while you will most likely not find me here on any kind of regular basis, I appreciate the Eagle for reminding us all that there's something different out there. I came on a day when the leather lifestyle was out on display on 28th Street for the Folsom Street East fair. I love this bar. Been going here during the weekend since 2009. What bothers me about this bar is this contest that happens every year "mr eagle" it's a title to support and expand gay culture in various aspects. Every time someone is given this title, these guys turn into complete jerks.These men aren't young, are always 40+ and they act like complete a**wholes. Threaten, confront, overall completely against what the purpose of the title given to them. It's been happening for years, it's disappointing that a token of gay culture in NYC grants these nobodies titles that actually divide and create hostility in a community they are suppose to support? Overall over the years I think it's a gimmick place, it's not a place to actually have a good time besides sex, it's turned into a very hateful and superficial joint. Not many leather bars left out there. I have been to every gay leather bar I know of, this century. Every gay leather bar either has a clique or a regular clientele. Won't be going here again. I've had ups and down with the Eagle over the last few years but I'm done with it now. The tall white security guy who is almost always there has been real short and rude to me in the past and he was tonight as well. While I was waiting in line to go inside I saw him tell several (white) men leaving "good night guys!" "Have a good night!" "Thanks for coming!" So apparently he knows how to appreciate people and be courteous - something as a black man I've never received from him. When I left do you think he bothered to part his lips to say anything at all to me? Not one word, and never has in the past. And I was the only one walking out the door at the time. Walked right past him. I said so you're not gonna wish me a good night? He then says with a very lackluster attitude "good night man". I really wanted to curse his ass out and say fuck you! Kiss my ass. But I kept it pushing. You shouldn't have to demand request and courtesy from anyone who wants you in their place of business. Guess what. You don't have to be concerned about getting my coins any more, ever again! It won't happen. These people need to be trained to be respectful and non biased. I used to like the Eagle, but the gay men here are kind of terrible. The staff is fantastic! Drinks are a little on the expensive side of things and not worth hanging out with the other gays who clearly need some counseling or a joint. Too many meth heads and coke fiends crap the place up. The Mr. Eagle contest has turned into a popularity contest. Michael Jeavons is a racist and has dropped the N bomb a couple of times. If they could filter the buttheads out it could be more fun, but it's all about being a circuit queen now. I'll think twice before coming back. read more

No bar is PERFECT... let's honestly face it. But I've been there since the beginning (of this location!) and generally speaking it's pretty consistently good overall. One of the biggest selling points for me is: the MUSIC!! OMG - easily/consistently THE BEST music of any gay bar I know of in NYC!! Very little pop music, not heavy on annoying vocals, balanced sound overall, especially on 2nd floor, and a decent variety. It blows my mind how poorly other bar's music tends to be. I grew up in Manhattan - and have been going out to bars and clubs since '84. So - I have heard and seen a LOT. Beyond that - having a roof deck at any bar is fantastic - but the one there is such a relief/welcome when it's nice out. On Sunday's beer blast (starts at 4p - come early!) it's a smorgasbord of varied people and 'looks' just having a gay old time. ;) And there's lots of GOOD looking to be had. Friendly (tipsy) people - just getting' into their thing. It's a healthy good thing to see/be a part of in the stuffy, and all-too-often predictable gay bar scene of NYC. I say: go on a theme night that fits you're curiousities... but prepare to go and stay on the later side before there's a serous crowd (11:30 ish). Way more visitors on the weekends - but also bigger crowds Fri/Sat. I'd recommend checkin' it out before it's gone... NYC has NOTHING close to it anymore... Sadly. :-/ read more

Well known establishment. Attractive crowd. Expensive drinks. 1 star because the bartenders don't give tap water which is an unsafe practice. They don't care who's getting drunk and falling or getting injured or killed, they just want $$. Make sure you come with a friend to look out for you because this place sure ain't gonna do that. Many other gay bars with similar levels of shenanigans that don't roll dice with their patrons' lives. Otherwise it's good practice to check your valuables or protect them carefully, pickpockets come here too and know the crowd is vulnerable. This is a real man's bar, one that truly separates the men from the boys, and one that should just be avoided if you are of the faint at heart. Yes, it's one of the few gems left that is right out of the 70's. Yes, it's smelly. And yes, it's a place to go if something like leather or fetish is your scene. This is America, and thank goodness we have real choices to make when we put on our big-boy pants - without apology. Either love it, avoid it, or heed the infamous phrase: "fake it until you make it". The bar is nice to hang out, but recently I had a bad experience, where a new security check point, started asking me if I come often, and how many drinks I have. What happened to the gritty, fun Eagle? Did they go the way of bingo games and karaoke? More than half of the bar is closed (downstairs & upstairs). About 20% are hustlers or have felt my ass to pick-pocket me (fair warning in the bathrooms BTW). The leather vested bartender is an attitude queen who thinks abusive bad service warrants tips. Maybe to regulars who know him and don't think he's just a douche. First impression - a douche, who wants tips. Second drink. Didn't change. Three stars because, yes, it's the Eagle. This isn't a great place to go if you respect consent. I got raped here a few years ago. If you're here at night (when else is it open?) you're going to have experiences with people who have never heard the word consent in their life. If you're into leather, not many people wear it here often anymore, but it's the last standing bastion in NYC though, so I really hope this changes for the better in the future. I gave it 5 stars, because it's DEFINITELY not everyone's thing, but if it is, it really is. And it's had quite the resurgence the past year. The Eagle is packed solid Saturday nights: pretty well underway by midnight, and peaking around 1-2am (I think--I'm several drinks in then), and open till 4. It's a very friendly crowd, easy to go alone and meet people. Once the weather is nice, the rooftop is very full, and very fun. Sunday beer bust is also big, especially in the summer, but I rarely go then, so check other reviews for better intel. Do NOT go to Eagle if you're going to be horrified to see a blowjob in the corner (particularly blowjob-corner, by the pool table on the second floor, and also behind the imaginary dancefloor on the opposite end of the same floor). Sometimes BJs at the urinal troughs on that floor can be a nuisance, because they really hold up the line. Just switch to the opposing bathroom, or it's easy to cajole people onto their way. Other things go on sometimes, too. If that last paragraph doesn't hint enough, nothing will. :) Oh, the music on Saturday nights is great, too. It can be too packed to move easily. That comes with the territory. It's always spacious down on the ground floor if u need a breather. Update: I popped in for a cocktail this Thursday, before meeting a friend who lives around the corner. Turns out they don't open until 10 (at least on weekdays). I guess they're latenight, but I was really surprised. It was 5 minutes to, so I waited, with about ten other guys. The coatcheck guy said it would get busy around midnight. Also, I noticed the huge "CASH ONLY" sign at the entrance, which I'd never paid attention to, since I always pay cash. A guy waiting asked if they have an ATM. The Eagle is a seedy, hole-in-the-wall bar that was the type that was the norm in the gay scene from the '70s through 2000ish. It's also in a grimey location in the far west end of Chelsea. That doesn't mean you can't necessarily have a good time here if you could come bar-hopping with friends. But the newer bars in NYC in HK are more up-to-date and sophisticated. read more

I went on a Tuesday for hankies code night. No one was wearing a hankies and there were about 30 guys. I was told by the bar tender that jockstrap night was popular - maybe 300 or so. Well, that was it true. Maybe 100 which was ok. It had a good vibe. BUT I had a horrible start to the night. The guy at clothes check was being nasty to someone who was asking for to get something from his pants. There was no one waiting. Then the clothes check guy was mean to me. I simply asked if there was a bag - he said no, so I said ok I'll use my own. It was clear I had never been there. But he yelled at me something like "so what are you waiting for??!!" I wanted to say a normal human being who would give me instructions about where to go. The other patron who he yelled at told me I could change around the corner. So yea, not a good first impression. I was actually fearful given his attitude that my ID or phone would be stolen. I can't imagine being from outside the country and having to deal with this nasty man. Gay bars are on the decline in NY. You would think these bars would go out of their way to attract and keep customers. Apparently not. Not songs about Cha Cha Heels and "Ray of Light" rmxzZzz. 6. Rami from Project Runway was within 10 feet all night! I was just confused when it seemed to empty out around 2:00 AM since it's open until 4:00. I would have never found the entrance if I came alone, but I was here with some friends. It's a more mixed scene, and super chill. The drinks are moderately priced, but everyone was nice. It's fun to just hand out at the bar. There is some seating around the periphery in the main room, along with a screen playing hardcore porn...(pro/con depending on your preferences). The other room has a pool table. Bathroom has a mesh fence so you end up looking across at someone else's face while you're peeing. A bit strange, but I guess you can always just look down. The Eagle is a hot bar -- huge, three-story, serious-looking space with one of the best roof decks (one of the few?) in the city, and it's packed in nice weather. Best nights are Code on Thursdays (dress the part for $3 Buds), Fridays and Saturdays are packed but usually with of out-of-towners, and Sundays bring a more casual, younger crowd in for $2 Bud draughts. The crowd varies from leathery old men to curious summer interns, but isn't consistently any one thing. Translation: If you have a type, you may or may not find it on any given night. Sometimes it looks like walking death in there, sometimes an S&M fantasy come to life, sometimes a frat house. You drinks your beer and you takes your chances. It's not a terribly female-friendly space, but stud bartenders, hardcore porn on the TVs and dark, cruisy corners keep the men happy. Soooooooo, I went to my first leather party. And I was the only girl, as expected, but I was treated so hospitably, which was NOT expected. The crowd here is eclectic and fun, although do not expect dancing. Expect 3 floors and a roofdeck, debauchery, play, darkness, and expect the unexpected. Also, do not get upset about the bathroom - if that is not your scene, then try to either hold it or you should relieve yourself before you go, but the bathroom is its' own entity. Well, I went on the advice of several friends to check it out - and it was quite a scene! We were there on a Saturday night, so it was fairly crowded. Staff was friendly, bartenders were HOT. Lots of big, dark places to get into trouble, too. I don't have a WHOLE lot of experience with leather bars, but I was a bit disappointed by the Eagle. I have been to the Powerhouse here in SF as well as the Eagle here and I have had much better experiences than I did at the NY location. I think it would be unfair to judge too harshly in case they were just having an off night, but I found it to be kind of boring in comparison with the same type of bars here in SF. The last 'leather' bar in NYC. Still turns out the heat on the weekends and the roof is great summer and winter. Great videos and good music. But the best part is that it's big enough to actually cruise. You can walk around, look over the men, get looked at, play the eye contact flirt game and then consummate your hook up on the spot. Public sex is discouraged and if caught, you will get tossed out, but smart perverts have their ways around that. Always a great place to find a private after party. I've spent every New Year's Eve here for the last 6 years. In the last year, The Eagle has become a haven for tourists, US and international, who like to whine about how 'tame" NYC has become. You know? The staff is eh and you're essentially invisible to most patrons if you don't (for reasons of genetic or stylistic provenance) look the part, but this place is alright. Drinks are priced decently for Manhattan, and even in the relative darkness you are like to see plenty that you'll never be able to unsee. At the very least, the amount you'll learn about that random Felicia who flashed you on that app last week is well worth the visit. Caveat growlor? At any rate, there's much fun to be had just sipping a cheap domestic brew and posting up by the entrance of a third floor bathroom. Really rude coat check man who ruined my evening just after I bought my overpriced beer and got in a really nice mood. This is the second time I've had a really rude staff experience here. This place used to once be a lot of fun. Now it's so pretentious it deserves to be made into condos like the rest of the street. Never going there again. I have been going to The Eagle now for several years and I am a definite fan. I believe it's the only designated leather bar in Manhattan, but if you aren't into the leather scene, don't let that discourage you from checking it out. The crowd is very mixed and not pretentious. Drinks are reasonably priced and the bartenders are nice. There are different parties or themes depending on the night, with the weekends most crowded (obviously). It can get pretty cruisy on the weekends so keep that in mind if you are shy about having advances made toward you. In the summer, the roof is open and provides an open-air atmosphere that is great. If you're looking for a place to hang out and grab a few drinks in a relaxed atmosphere definitely consider this bar. read more

HALLOWEEN: I've been going to The Eagle for the last 3 years. I sometimes would go 2 or 3 times a week. It's always been a smelly, sketchy, shady place, but you tolerate somethings if you feel accepted there. I went in last night for the costume contest. Arrived around 11:30p. Was met at the door by the Emcee, Witty Repartee, who I over heard her say to the guy collecting the door cover, "have you checked in anymore title holders?" "there's some title holders who want to compete in the contest." (I knew then that this wasn't going to go well - it sounded biased already). Then I stepped up to pay and she looked at my costume, up and down, and walked away. I get inside and my friend tells me that I have to sign up with Witty to enter the contest....but now she's no where to be found. We go stand near the stage because surely she'll sign up people there. He looked upstairs, we sent another friend frantically looking for her, no where. Twenty mins later, she magically reappears off to the farrrr end of the stage announcing it was ready to start. My friends go bring her to me (since I can't move because my costume is that big). She says they've already got 20 contestants and aren't accepting anymore "we've been going around for the last two hours begging people to enter. We're only taking 20 people and there's another 20 wanting to enter..." I remarked that the Facebook flyer didn't say anything about a 20 person limit and if 20 more people want to enter, they should be allowed to. The owners decided to keep it at 20. Lots of people were upset. That's shady business practices there. From Emcee to owners, you can't change the rules on the spot to accommodate who you want to win. This is another reason for The Eagle to not have drag queens. I won't be going back. read more

Don't go for the 'happy hour'. It's supposedly from 6-10, but we came in around 9:30 then they changed bartenders about 10 minutes before 10 and the new (very hateful) bartender refused to honor the previous bartender's 2-for-1 deal. (This didn't just happen to me, as several patrons were asking for their second drink and he refused to honor them). Too many bars in Manhattan to put up with shady gimmicks and hateful bartenders. The place tingles deep core of sexual desires especially for the leathers. Music, sexy lighting and people (men) created very unique space. It was very different. The original Eagle at 21st & 11th Ave was legendary and lasted through all the glory years of sexual exuberance and well beyond. There was only ground floor with nice size bar.
