Hard to order when bar is full and it takes awhile to catch eyes with the bartender. My one complaint. I understand the bar is busy. Please pay attention. Bartenders should know their drink menu. I ordered a nonalcoholic drink for my friend, the Brooklyn IPA. Then watched the bartender pour a draft Goose IPA. That's a serious issue. We came here on a Sat night, so ofc a big night out! The space gets so tight though, where people have to squeeze between two people to get by. I liked the music, and general vibes of the place is great, where everyone is really friendly. There are also two bathrooms in the middle of the bar, so you have to really be careful else the person leaving the bathroom can potentially hit the door open right on you, and the line to those bathrooms - as you can imagine - are not efficient. I did enjoy the digital jukebox, where you pay $1 (cash) to pick a song. The queue does get long, and only displays the next five songs, but it's a good excuse to get one to stay longer ;) read more

I think the atmosphere has changed a bit since pre pandemic to now like with most places but overall still a great place to hang. From what I remember before this place used to be quite packed with lots of people dancing and mingling. Visited here with a group of friends on a Christmas trip to NYC. We had a mid sized group (5-6 people), and thankfully the crowd seemed to be dying down by the time we got there. There were lots of people in the front area of the bar and a little more space towards the back. Bar service was good and friendly. It's definitely a smaller bar and more of a "low key" feel then a bar with flashy lights and loud house music. They had a jukebox machine which made it fun to flip through the song choices. The only thing that's not perfect about Cubbyhole is how tiny it is. While it fits the name it makes it really hard to enjoy it on the weekend because it gets So Packed. On weekdays it's much better though. We originally went on a Saturday but got overwhelmed by how many people were there so we went on a Monday instead and it was great! Came here with my cousin Saturday night after dinner and it was so packed there was barely standing room which is rough because this place is kind of small to begin with. I could only tolerate it enough to get through one drink so if that's not your vibe avoid on Saturday nights and opt for a weekday. Overall everyone seemed friendly and they played good music. So I wanted to go to one of the historic lesbian bars of NYC and get to experience going to a queer bar for the first time. Although the bartender was respectful, it seems that there is a negative bias towards non-white patrons as one reviewer mentioned. The bartender was more talkative and engaging with the white patrons compared to me (and it made things more awkward being the only Black person in the bar). The space is small and can get crowded, so it can be a health concern with COVID. Plus, the outside seating at the time wasn't available. Positives: Drinks were pretty cheap, and two bathrooms available. If you're a BIPOC, I wouldn't really recommend going here unless you got your friends with you. It's a shame, really since I am aware of the lesbian bars being closed down and disappearing. But if you're not gonna make queer BIPOC, who contribute much to the LGBTQIA+ community with activism, culture, etc. and still face discrimination in the community, welcome then why bother having a queer bar? read more

I always LOVED the vibe at the cubby hole -and it was the go to spot for me and my girlfriend years ago because it had the most diverse queer/mixed crowd and the staff and customers were kind to each other. So I was saddened by my experience on Tuesday: When my friend tried to order a drink, the bartender was aggressively rude, saying my friend was interrupting his conversation with the two other people we'd sat down next to at the bar. Later, I discovered that the people he'd been talking with when we came in had stolen one of my bags that I'd hooked under the bar, directly in front of me. The whole experience felt super shady, like some kind of set up. If you go during Pride weekend, be sure to dress down and keep a tight grip on your stuff! read more

I came on Sunday at midnight and waited in the pouring rain for 45 minutes! It's a small place - no credit card, cash only. Your typical dive bar drinks - when I went they were out of white claws and frozen drinks. It was packed and full of bodies - no where to dance. Great music though - would be back! read more

I'm visiting New York from California with my friends, and for pride, my friend wanted to go to the gay bars/clubs near us. I'm 22 and get carded every time, and all the clubs we've been to I've been fine getting in, because they have proper equipment and black lights to verify ID. At this bar, there was a woman my age checking IDs by just looking at them. She had no equipment to check, and told me my ID was fake. I even presented her my credit cards and my vax record with my birthday on it (there is no way you can fake this by logging on to the official California vax site) and she would not let me in and was extremely condescending. I completely understand keeping those out with fake IDs, but being over 21 and having an issue at only this place when every other place I've been to has been great with bouncers says something! It's unfortunate that I experienced this, perhaps because I am short or perhaps because I am from California, or maybe because I am brown. My two forms of ID were not enough here, and I will never be returning. Being POC definitely factored into the condescending tone of the bouncer. read more

If you're queer you're legally obligated to go to Cubbyhole at least once. They always have great music because they have one of those e-jukebox thingies that anyone can queue songs from. The staff are cool as hell and looking at them makes you desperately want their approval. Half of the bouncer staff are just as cool and the other half are neutral. It can get pretty busy on weekends, but weekdays are usually chill and a great time to grab a drink after work and maybe meet someone. Sometimes they do fun events like book swaps or inviting queer community members to hang out. I can't vouch for the drinks, I usually get a margarita bc I'm a tequila girlie and it's aight. I wouldn't write home about it, but not bad at all. The prices aren't bad either, especially for the area, but be aware that Cubbyhole is cash only. They do have an atm though if you run out of cash. I keep coming back for the good vibes and because there are so few queer/lesbian bars. We can't afford to lose the gem that is Cubbyhole. read more

I've been a customer at the Cubbyhole for years and understand the whole "sassy/rude NYC bartender" shtick, but this past weekend was the last straw. I watched a female bartender make a younger customer cry as she tried to order a drink. I don't know what this bartender's problem was, but the customer was being polite and absolutely did not deserve the verbal attack. I watched the same bartender aggressively chew out another customer for not tipping enough (in her mind). Both customers were visibly upset and shaken. This is supposed to be a safe space. read more
