My friend, clearly a little tipsy, was aggressively pulled away for a "dance," then basically held ransom for a $100 tip. I had no idea all of this was going down till it was basically over. I brought my parents, who are visiting New York, into this bar on September 4th around 7:50pm. It was my first time here, and at first, the atmosphere seemed really cool, dim red lighting, a disco ball, and an overall unique vibe. Unfortunately, the experience quickly took a disturbing turn that left us shocked and deeply uncomfortable. As we entered, my mom snapped a single photo of the ambiance; no faces, just the space. While I was speaking to the bartender (a shorter man with dark hair), my mom had her phone open, camera pointed toward the disco ball as she adjusted the lighting. Out of nowhere, the bartender snatched my mother's phone right out of her hands mid-conversation, aggressively trying to get into her camera roll while exclaiming, "Don't record me without my permission." Not only was this completely uncalled for, but also flat-out disrespectful. I immediately told him there was no need for that her phone was clearly pointed at the disco ball. He then said, "She can film the disco ball, but don't film me without asking my permission. Delete that." My mom explained she hadn't filmed him at all and even showed him the single photo she took , which did not contain his face or anyone else's, and still deleted it to deescalate the situation. I fully understand staff not wanting to be filmed while at work. That's fair. But the way this bartender handled it was completely out of line. Instead of violently grabbing someone's personal property, he could have asked politely if she had taken any footage and requested deletion if necessary. If there is a no photo/video policy, it should be clearly posted or communicated at the door, not enforced through harassment. What makes this even worse is that this is a gay bar, a space that should be welcoming and safe. For a male bartender to make my mother feel threatened, uncomfortable, and disrespected in that environment is extremely disappointing and hypocritical to the values this type of space is supposed to uphold. Because of this experience, I will never return to this establishment, and I have already shared what happened with others. If management cares about the reputation of their business, I strongly suggest they re-train their staff on how to handle situations respectfully and without violating guests' boundaries. read more

When a friend walked in they began berating them immediately. The threat of calling ICE felt very racist and demeaning and unsafe in a place that one would think is welcome to gay and queer POC. So Dark and so Right For me, I have nothing but positive memories of Nowhere. It definitely was a part of my weekly "East Village gay bar crawl" for many years. The bar has a no frills theme to it, with patrons of all shapes and colors. The drinks are relatively cheap; the bartenders have generous pours; and there are decent happy hour specials. All great in my book. The bar itself has a divey, 80's feel too it. Although there is a DJ spinning most nights, the bar really is not a dancehall, per se. I see Nowhere kind of as a place to meet up with people before heading out to someplace else. You know, get your buzz on with cheap drinks before going to places and paying $15 dollars for a gin and soda. In my experience of frequenting Nowhere, I found the majority of the bartenders to be really cool and down to earth (characteristics that can be hard to find in the NYC bar scene). The only (small) issue with Nowhere is the $25 card minimum, which can be high relative to the drink prices. But, I've never had an issue meeting the minimum. read more

My husband & I stayed in NY for Labor Day weekend and one of the places we kept going back to was Nowhere. Sonny the bartender was wonderful - he's so down to earth and approachable, he made good, strong drinks, reasonably priced, but more than that: my husband lost an item in the bar and no one had seen it. Right after we left - literally a block down the street on our way to the subway - we hear someone bellow my husband's name. We turn around in surprise, 'cause we don't know anyone in NY, and it's Sonny! Someone had turned in the lost item right after we left and he ran outside to get it back to us. We gave him a hug and thanked him, and promptly came back the next night for more drinks. Also: DJ Dexter Driscoll was so sweet - he even took requests. I definitely recommend everyone check it out! You would think that a place meant to be a safe space for the LGBT community would hire people who aren't, you know, against that very same community. I was assaulted by a bouncer here and have heard nothing from the people here. No one stepped in to assist me. I called the cops, but only dealt with threats of being arrested too because the bouncer lied and said I assaulted him. It could have went way better if management had stepped in. If you're going to provide a safe space for others, employ the right people to provide that very same space. On a positive note, the bartenders were nice. read more

Best queer bar in the city, and probably one of the best of all time in NYC. Basics: cheap drinks, quick, friendly bartenders with great personalities. It's divey in the best way possible. Posters on the wall, pool table, places to sit. Music is varied, not the newest pop hits, ranging from disco to punk. Dark. They sometimes let me hold benefits for our community, and their employees reflect the community - lots of trans folks and people of color work there. It's the kind of place you can bring anyone in your life and they'll have a good time. And you can meet people there for friends and hookups. I met my husband there. Smart people hang out there. I was looking for a place to have a drink in the area, and I picked Nowhere at random. It was a Friday night at around 12am, and the bar was about half empty. *Interesting* decoration: jockstraps hanging from the ceiling, hardcore 70s gay porn videos playing on the TV screens, scruffy-looking bartenders wearing assless buttchaps... Very divey feel, relaxed East-Village crowd, and great music mix! Too bad it wasn't more crowded and that no one was dancing, or I probably would have partaken myself. The drinks were pretty cheap (around $5 or $6); kudos for the beers on tap (Hoegaarden, yay!). There's a small lounge area with couches in the back. While I was there some idiot complained to me about there being lesbians in the bar: WTF? Not exactly my type of bar, but I still had a good time and may stop by again if I'm in the neighborhood. UPDATE (08/07/07): I've been going to Nowhere quite a bit more recently, and it might well be my new fave gay dive EV bar. The first time I went must have been a special event: on most nights it's quite a bit more low-key, with a lot of regulars just hanging out and having a drink. Kajagoogoo would probably never sing about this place because nobody I've met here is ever Too Shy*. People here seem to be friendly and relaxed and you can strike up a conversation easily. Not like some of the places in Chelsea or Hell's Kitchen where people just want to be seen but if you try to talk to them, they freeze like they're auditioning for a remake of "Mannequin". (Which was far superior to "Mannequin 2: On the Move-- I mean, I like William Ragsdale but he is no Andrew McCarthy) In any event, this is kind of a cool place. It's very laid back and much like an English Muffin, has lots of nooks and crannies where you can go and talk with friends new or old. Plus it's very dimly lit, so that helps me look better. So I'm more then f****** annoyed, at this point! 1. My boyfriend who is absolutely responsible with his personal items, got robbed, gotta blame the dancers... ( in my opinion). I got a phone call from him while he was outside our midtown west apartment, He finally figured out that his wallet was missing I paid the cab. 2. Called the bar asked if anyone found a wallet. (Long story short) Bartender said the music was to loud while I was on the phone with him, which I gave him the benefit of the doubt if he truly couldn't hear me on the phone, or if he was ignoring me. He hung up. Tried again (same thing)... 3. This is what truly irked me. Decided hell I'll take a 12 dollar Uber, we live in midtown west. Walk into the establishment, Talked to the bouncer explaining hey, my boyfriend's wallet is missing tried calling etc etc. ..bouncer pulls the Mgr over.. The mgr is asking me questions what's the full name I give it etc. His response well no one has turned anything in, give it 30/40 mins if the people downstairs turn it in.. (Cool beans) in my head, Mgr walks away. So for the 30/40 mins I rather just chill and order a drink. Bouncer says it's a 5.00 dollar cover charge. Ok all I have on me is a credit card and a debit card no cash. Ask to use the ATM. The bouncer responded with well there is an ATM across the street.) yet there is an ATM in the back of this bar. Ask for the mgr again. He comes over I explain hey I rather just order a drink and wait till you find out from who ever is downstairs).. the bouncer won't let me in without paying the 5.00 dollar cover charge can I use the ATM in the back of the bar, here's my driver license to hold onto while I withdraw a 20, so I can pay your cover charge. The mgr JR responded with well there is an ATM across the street. To me that's no compassion what so ever, is this crappy ass establishment so money hungry for 5.00 dollars.. I'm sure the ATM fee was probably at least 2.00+ I'm not positive but most ATMS in NYC are 3.00 dollars and more. I refused to go across the street and use there ATM to withdraw money to pay the cover.. So I left, ordered my Uber back to our place.. got home explained it to my boyfriend, He was knocked out and didn't seem to worried. When he wakes up I'm sure he's going to care about his ID, as far as cards go I transferred most of the money to my cards and even if so hope who ever took the wallet gets caught... waited till 3:55am called back and talked to Raul apparently a wallet was turned in with just 5.00 dollars in it. Best goddam bar in NYC. Have been coming here since I was a young thing (legally mind you because it is not possible to get past bouncers without your ID/ don't try it) and it still gives me the neighborhood queer vibe I need to get by. Music is always a party and DJ takes care of the crowd during events (fire in the hole/discoden.) Excellent bartending staff, outside a very rare and unprecedented occurrence recently. I came in on a Tuesday night visiting from Chicago for vacation, mingled and attempted to grab drinks at the bar. At first I thought I must not be able to hear an accent right because I can't understand a thing the bartender is saying once I'm able to catch her attention (attention being used very loosely, she more or less stared at me for a minute), but I'm guessing she was mighty wasted. I'm a bartender, I get it, sometimes you gotta have a drink to get through the night. But this was on another level. Incoherent mumbling, really slow service with the service being visibly intoxicated and incorrect half the time. After a while I stopped trying to throw money down and just hung around until me and my group of friends went to another bar to actually drink. Nowhere has been an anchor for me every time I visit and I don't want that to change. Hopefully things get cleaned up by my next visit. read more

Living in Manhattan, I've become accustomed to having certain privileges. Cab always available, a terrific steak dinner in midtown, enough lawyers and doctors to date that I might actually be able to pay my student loan debt, and upscale bars with fantastic mood lighting. Nowhere Bar has none of these things. I had been sitting at home on Sunday night, relaxing after a long day, reading my book when my phone rang and one of my fabulous friends invited me out for drinks at this bar. Thus a 20 minute cab ride later, I was walking into this seedy dark establishment. Tonight...I was slumming it. The decor of the place was "dormitory chic". Shredded toilet paper was strewn all over the floor in small piles, as well as hung from the ceiling in streamers. Apparently, this was in the event that the bathroom was in use, you could just make on the floor and wipe up. My friend was waiting patiently in the corner, and ordered me a cider beer. The cost? $5, which for NYC is really not that expensive. Unfortunately, the cost of those beers change depending on the bartender, as the younger bartender charged us only $3 for the same drink. Nothing turns me on more than a bartender with bad math skills...and this man was on the road to marrying me. Sunday night, was drunk college student night, but honestly, I have the distinct feeling that every night in this bar is drunk college student night. Not that I have anything against that, but at the age of *ahem* 37 (yes...I'm admitting it), I'm a little beyond worrying how I'm going to get my term paper done after consuming several cocktails. I'm more concerned how my 401k is going to survive a downturn in the economy. The "party" of the night had something to do with drunk hippy guys, because the man who kept getting on the microphone had not seen a bar of soap or a pair of scissors in many, many, many, MANY months! In fact, If he hadn't been all of 23 years old, I would have considered him to be a close friend of my mother's from her Woodstock days. I kept thinking I had fallen into a remake of the movie "hair"...a really bad remake. And just like in the movie, we had nudity. The host of the bar made an announcement. "Come up to the bar and show me your dick, asshole, or extended vaginal lips and you'll get a free shot!" First of all...as a gay man, I have no clue what "extended vaginal lips" are...and I don't think I want to know. And the idea of drinking an unknown shot in a college bar, while they were attempting to solicit for the amateur strip show, was probably not a good idea on my part. I've been known to do things I shouldn't after drinking a few too many drinks. But as the cocktail waiter approached me, and asked me to expose myself, I couldn't resist. It isn't like I've not shown it to anyone before. Hell...I been known to email a picture on request. So yes...I dropped my pants for the "mystery drink". So today...two days later, my hangover finally subsiding I've learned some things. 1) I'm not in my 20's anymore. 2) No matter how free the shot...never drink cheap tequila. 3) Future rich husbands do not hang out at dive bars. 4) Cabs rarely stop in the East Village to pick up drunk people wanting to go home. read more

One part dive bar, one part martini bar, one part lesbian pool hall, all rolled into what feels like Frat House basement, but teeming with gay people. Confusing, right? I know. But I guess that's why they call it Nowhere: because you might as well be at any of the above type locations, but instead you're here. I came one recent evening to meet up with some friends and sample the drinks. I ordered a Manhattan, a surprising choice even for me, and it was tasty - they do actually have quite a lot of top-shelf liquor, even if it feels like a beer kind of place (they have lots of beer too). It stinks in there, man. It took me a long time to get used to that. I used to go to this bar in Southern Indiana called Uncle Elizabeth's. It was in a double-wide trailer, and it had a pool table and juke box and cheap drinks, and everybody knew my name, which is Cliff. That's one of my favorite places on earth. Nowhere feels like a cheap imitation of that small-town bar atmosphere. And by cheap, I mean it stinks in there. They had a neat drink special going on, but the bathrooms were yucky, the space is awkward, and the volume of the music clashed with the atmosphere the bar was trying to maintain. It gets one star for $3 domestics (it was a Thursday) and 1 star for, as Ro Ro R. says, fresh popped popcorn because it masked the stink. read more

This would be a fun bar even without all the jokes that come to mind regarding the name ("so where'd you go last night?" "Ummm, nowhere..."). Low ceilings, low lighting and plenty of nooks and corners and crannies for hanging out or making out. There's a pool table and fabulous bathroom graffiti (don't forget your markers!) It's funny how a lot of the other Yelp reviews say it's a younger crowd in there... I was definitely there on Buddies night. On Tuesday night at 1:30AM there was a nice crowd of mostly bears. There was a DJ, (although they do have a jukebox too; it was shut off that night) and they serve $3 Yeungling and shots of Jäger, and $2 PBRs. John the bartender was fabulous and chatted us up once the masses had all been served; he had cute tattoos and piercings and an adorably subtle lisp. I'll be back soon; it's cheap and close to work and sometimes a gal just wants to unwind and have a drink someplace where she knows none of the guys will hit on her. read more

Any place that has queer plastered on the front door in the good way is pretty much the only place in the world that I want to be. I've been to Nowhere a BUNCH on weeknights, and it is stellar. The fly happy hour drink specials keep me coming back for more. $3 Yuenglings? Yes, please! Nowhere has that dive-y feel and is just crowded enough*. The bar-goers are VERY laid back and diverse in terms of queer/not queer/masculine presenting/feminine presenting/trans/not trans, which is precisely what I look for in a hang out spot. There's definitely more queer men here than anything else, but even the few folks in the bar at any given time that identify outside of this is comforting for me. The seating is great. There are plenty of bar stools lined up against the bar. Also, there are couches and comfy chairs that cover the perimeter of the main area of the bar/dance floor on certain nights. There is also a nook with a comfy couch if you're looking for something a little bit more closed-off [although, good luck getting that spot --- it's hot real estate!], and one more private-esque area in the way back of the bar. I really enjoy how Nowhere makes use of all of the nooks and crannys in this space. SO cozy. There are two bathrooms. The one towards the back has a single stall with a lock. The bathroom in the front, not so much. There's also a pool table, if that's your kind of thing. Prior to this past Friday night, I had only been to Nowhere on weeknights. The weekly Friday night queer party Hot Rabbit, which used to be held at Heather's Bar, recently changed locations and is now at Nowhere. I went this past Friday, and it was super chill. Pretty great mix of people; everyone was super friendly. I talked to a bunch of folks that I had just met that night, and danced with a few others. The vibe is super laid back, which is always nice on a Friday night. Although, dancing was definitely not the focus of this party --- there was not a whole lot of it goin' on. I like to bust a move on the dance floor just as much as the next guy, but the focus on talking and chilling is sweet. Yes, I know, if you're playing pool and wander too close to the door of the men's bathroom, you're going to get a strong whiff of urine. Yes, I know, the place is large enough to hold about 270 people, but there are never more than 9 people in the whole place (that's at 3% capacity, for all you math nerds out there). Laid back, chill and eclectic mix of music (a bit too loud for my taste), dim lights, some stools and seats, a pool table. Not pretentious (at all). Beer on tap (Hoegaarden, Brooklyn lager, Sam Addams, among others). I also think they work on a reverse happy hour schedule; the drinks got cheaper as the night wore on. Maybe it's the tips? I go to Nowhere for the Moustache Ride parties they have each month. It's always fun to dress up to the themes, and act silly without any pretense.
