Ty's - Currently me 40 years Later. :) - Gay Bars Near Me - New York, New York

Opened in 1972, Ty's isn't as old as Julius' nearby (review: https://yelp.to/KjKqALij-A). It's about six years younger, but it felt more centrally located on Christopher Street. Coincidentally Jamie W. and I came by right after a visit to Julius', and both bars share the same casual neighborhood hangout vibe. Ty's felt smaller, but that was mostly because there was no pool table here. Unless you plan to nurse a few at the bar, I think this was more a place to drop by for one and then move onto the next place. Or maybe that was just us. Drinks were dirt cheap, $6 each for a Tequila Sunrise and a Gin & Tonic, and they came in beer mugs (photo: https://yelp.to/FHkY4uqcY1). They were pretty stiff from what I recall. We knew if we had another, we'd be under the floorboards. MANHATTAN/West Village: Ty's Bar is one of New York's 1st gay bars and they have the most friendly staff and customers we've come by anywhere! Reasonably priced drinks, TVs to watch the game, and great overhead lighting make it a magical spot to hang out with your dog. Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed inside and there is a huge tub of dog treats. Brie made a lot of friends with her cuteness! It's a small place, but a lot of fun! read more

We very randomly stopped in this bar - on our way to somewhere else - and it was the best detour we've ever taken in our lives. This is the kind of place where all the frosty, uppity nonsense you find on other gay bars is left at the door. Super small, but filled with friendly, fun people, great music, and nice bartenders. read more

Ty's is one of those great gay bars that feels like home even if you are visiting from thousands of miles away. It has a great neighborhood feel, but welcomes visitors. The vibe reminds me of Kings Arms in London, StreetBar in Palm Springs, CA, or Pilsner Inn in San Francisco. read more

I like my Sunday "tea" and usually start with 'tinis at another place and leave Tys as my last pitstop for cheaper drinks (which yes, are stronger than others) before heading home. AND I have liked all the staff over the years who have made it sort of a "gay Cheers" - Gary, Ron, Daniel, Julian all rock. But man, that FOX guy on Sundays sure doesn't make you feel welcomed at all. I do not know what his problem is - if it's supposed to be a "cute act" to appear muy macho or sarcastic, well it sure doesn't work to be so snarky to customers. I am always pleasant to bartenders and tip them well, but this guy seems to have stick up his bum OR is insecure OR is always in a bad mood. EVEN when paying him a compliment, you get a rude stare followed by a snappy "what are you having". Stop acting like a dick man and TRY to engage in friendly chit chat if Ty's wants more than these 3 stars. read more

I really like this bar . Bartenders are friendly and seem like they have a fun time. Drinks are wonderful and at a good value ( Three drinks for 22 dollars is like a steal in this economy ). I also appreciate that they are open during holidays as it gives me a safe space and a community to go to. Music in this more is catered towards 80s/90s music which is personally my thing. They give you drinks in this awesome mug. I just wish I could buy one and bring it home. Community is on the mature/bear side of things. everyone here knows each other and I have had conversations with alot of awesome people. No problem making new friends here. My only gripe is the bar is too small as it can get crowded inside. Besides that, I think this will be a bar I will regular attend to when I am ever in the city. Would recommend. read more

Ad this is not. What this is is my own personal experience of feeling connected to the history of ‍‍+ and being slightly intoxicated at the same time and it was marvelous. It felt like I was in a movie from the 80s (when VHS was the thing) and it was cool. I just regret not wearing skin tight denim but that's just an aesthetic thing. We popped in to kill some time before a table was ready for us at a place across the street. So...I didn't know this was a gay bar. And that's honestly my own fault. My friends saw the pride flag out front but I figured it was NYC and they were making a point to say they were LGBT-friendly. Although the bouncer clued us in as we came in. Pro: I never had to wait the bathroom! The music here is upbeat, the service is fast and the drinks are cheap--my amaretto sour was *reliably* good. The vibe is low key. We had a great time vibing to the music which is loud enough to put you in a good mood but not loud enough that you can't still have a conversation. They played a lot of reggaeton the night that we were there which was nice to hear something a little different than American top 40 like every other bar in the city. They serve cocktails in beer mugs, so you definitely get your money's worth! This bar is friendly for all folk, judging from the warm reception we got. read more

Like most places in the village this spot offers strong drinks for people and an older crowd of audience. This is way more of a dive bar chill back and talk and catch up kind of place. So know that you're getting yourself into that before coming in. Other than that, cool bartender and friendly. Two drink minimum if you are paying with a card. read more

Ty's is the smallest gay bar in NYC so it always seems crowded. It's full of laid back, beer-swilling bears and otters. Cocktails come in beer mugs so you get the most from your dollars. Ty's hasn't been remodeled in ages so this is not a modern trendy gay bar, and reminds me of a truck stop with a dose of sleaze (which is a plus LOL). Word on the street is that Ty's is the tiniest gay bar in the city. Although Ty's is small, it definitely has a large personality. This is a easy laid back kind of bar where one can grab a few beers and/or drink and chill. The patrons reside on all parts of the LGBT spectrum in terms of race, body type, and age. I will say that most of the crowd were in the 25+ age group. The bar staff was very attentive and friendly - no attitude. I did not have to set myself on fire to get noticed by the bartender because he was admiring his biceps. On my visit (an early Sunday evening), the bar was showing music videos of various artists from the late 80's and early 90's. *Random question: What ever happened to the R&B girl group, Jade?* Ty's is the perfect place to grab a few drinks to get your night started. read more

Historic bar on Christopher Street...and not just because most of the guys who come here look like they fought in the Civil War! I kid, I kid. This is a pretty nice place. Drinks are reasonable. It's pretty small but there are tables and seats so you have a place to put your beer when you're standing around. On the Saturday I was there, the crowd skewed older, bear-ier and leather-ier, but that wasn't the entire clientele. I saw a guy wearing a sportscoat and I had on a sweater (cashmere, naturally) so there's that. They had some interesting videos on the giant TVs. One was showing a basketball game and one was showing a video for some rugby team that was making a calendar. Bartenders were very nice. This is a nice, laid back place to have a drink. read more

A large group of us, maybe 20, showed up on a Wednesday night after work and had such a great time we stayed for almost 7 hours! The bartender, although solo, was cool as a cucumber the whole time and even brought out bowls of snacks for our tables. I LOVE this place! read more

This place is garbage. Last night they wouldn't let my friend grab his coat before leaving. Will never come to this trash bar again.

I'm still processing how I felt about this place. It wasn't full of leather (though it had a fair amount), it wasn't an older crowd (though it had a fair amount), had a decent selection of bottled beer, and was generally pretty clean. The thing is, lately I've been becoming more and more attracted to guys with beards: there were a lot of those here, even some younger guys. Cruising aside, I can see myself becoming a regular here. Even if people start second-guessing the blonde creature in the corner drinking a Guiness. If not, just to finish the Tom of Finland documentary that was showing on the screens the other night. read more

Great West Village classic still going strong after all these years. This is now the unofficial bear-oriented bar in town. They don't have a bear night per se but if you want to meet these sorts of fellas go there. Take it from a 20 yr Manhattan gay bar veteran. Oh, and one more thing it is small and it can get packed. if you don't like crowds go on a week night like a Thursday. On some Tuesdays they have a fireman's thing. And say hello to Gary -- the friendliest and happiest bar tender out there! (Tuesdays to Fridays). Don't hide on the internet. Go out and meet people in real time. I go to bars like this on the nights when there's about 6 people total. So, that's a preface to this review and also what I like to do in bars. Small, but cozy place to get to know someone and have a good drink. Long Island Iced Tea I had was hand-crafted, meaning it was good and strong. Yum. Decorations for the holidays were rustic and actually just pretty, not impeding on the mood. Two flat screen TVs were playing football, but I've also heard other stuff is played on them when there's no game. (Other stuff being, perhaps, inappropriate for young yelpers). I'd recommend this place and I'm happy I went. It was recommended to me by a friend. Apparently, my beard is welcome there, so I suppose the rest of me should be able to get a drink while i'm at it! read more

Been here a few more times since my initial review. Everytime Gary and Julian are wonderful to me. The guys who come here are always friendly and outgoing and great share a laugh or two with. Beware of some young girls who have never been into a gay bar and think they own the joint. Just ignore them though. They don't know any better; they just weren't raised right. read more

Another Village institution, this gay bar attracts an eclectic crowd with its weekly leather/uniform night and dirt-cheap beer blasts. Ty's has a monthly gathering of the gay firefighters and they were there this evening - some nice eye candy amongst them. Definitely a crowd that "comes here often" but not my scene. Still I like the fact there are W. Village homos holding down the fort and planting the rainbow flag amidst our former environs... It's good to see my peeps holding their own in my neighborhood. read more

It's smallish, but the drinks are strong and the folks working there are very friendly. My best mate lost his wallet there, and they had it waiting for him when we went back the next day. Phew! Ty's is a humble neighbourhood bar with friendly bartenders and custom! The music is never too loud, the beer's always cold and it's just dodgy enough to keep the straight females from invading (as they have every other gay bar!) Ty's is one of the few gay bars left in New York City I feel comfortable in and with their specials nearly every night, you won't leave with an empty wallet!!
