We all know the Stonewall Inn as the site of the riots that kick-started the LGBTQ movement in 1969. In recent years, it has become more a tourist attraction, especially among out-of-town families looking to Instagram a "gay bar". However, just around the corner in a relatively nondescript building at West 10th and Waverly Place is a true gay bar. In fact, it's New York City's oldest gay bar having been established as gay in 1966. Inside it was full of regular locals with only the occasional appearance of a tourist, I.e.,if you don't count me and Jamie W. We didn't feel like interlopers though thanks to the been-there, done-that humor of Andre, the deadpan bartender, and the royal presence of Simone (photo https://yelp.to/4m9rPOTT68). We discovered Simone was featured in the 2022 book, "Legends of Drag: Queens of a Certain Age" which we ordered from Amazon right after. It is cash only, so hit up the multiple ATM's of your bank you'll pass before you make your way here, because the ATM in the bar itself is a $3.45 surcharge, and has a $200 max withdrawal. That said, the music is always great; a nice mix of stuff from the 80s and 90s, and some early 00's. Bartenders are friendly, and if you get peckish because you've had a few too many pints, they serve food as well. Good for small groups, but is a bit too small for much of a crowd. This is more of a hangout bar than a dance club. Bathrooms are clean and brightly lit. I had a good time here. read more

Look: I stumbled in because it was pouring and I wanted a strong drink and place to hide out til my wife got off work. I wasn't counting on the delicious burgers, not the flash floods that started up - when we went to close out, the bartender threw the door open so we could see the mess outside and convinced us to order a third round. Absolutely no complaints - the music was cute, the food was yummy, and the drinks were stiff enough to make our trek home in the rain somehow bearable. I came here for the burger, it's good, and well priced especially for the village.. but I couldn't wait to leave after having such a horrendous service experience. The bartender offered me a shot on the house, I had already bought a shot and he was "buying me one back" except when I got the check, the shot was on the bill. I brought this to his attention he said sorry my manager is here so I had to put it on. It's not the cost of the shot, it's negligible, I didn't want the shot but felt inclined to take it because he was offering it. This clearly is a reoccurring scam to drive up the bill so he can get a larger tip. Well here's a tip, don't take advantage of your customers if you want return business. It's a cash only spot, so I have doubts about them paying their fair share of taxes. I won't be coming back, historic or not, don't care there are plenty of well run establishments in this city that also have history along side customer service. read more

Stopped in for a couple beers while waiting for a seat at a nearby tea shop. I had a couple of Narragansetts which were priced at $8 per pint which is traditionally for Manhattan. All the drafts were macros. They had two bourbons: Makers and Bullett. Seating was spaced out making it a good spot for groups. Super busy in the middle of the day on a Sunday. read more

We love this place!! We started visiting over the last two years and have to check it out when in NYC. Such a cozy and friendly neighborhood bar. We adore Chad who is the sweetest and most welcoming guy here (and overall a gem). The services is always spot-on and the food is also really delicious. We always enjoy Julius' martinis along with their burgers, fries and mozzarella sticks. Such a great spot, now a historic place and the oldest gay bar in NYC. The ambience and the legacy of the place remain as powerful as ever, which is why I'm giving two stars instead of one. However, where Julius' used to have one of the best burgers in NYC, it now serves one of the most mediocre, dry preformed beef patties I've ever had. I'm so disappointed. "Nothing good ever lasts" has finally hit this once stellar establishment. When I mentioned the beef to the bartender, he claimed they've been serving the preformed patties for years. I think he's a liar. I ate here a month ago, and I don't remember being served a burger akin to a hockey puck. And I ordered my food before I started drinking, so I wasn't buzzed when I got my food. Quite a few tables and seats but usually pretty packed. Lovely staffs that are all friendly, including the bouncer at the door. Most customers that go there are friendly too. Nice atmosphere and pretty loud so you got to yell a bit since there's always so many people and noises. Nice music and quite a lot of drinks. They even have cocktails which some bars don't, they have 'gay beer' which is a lager but pretty light for me. Tastes nice though and gender neutral restroom. The door doesn't lock and not the cleanest but it's alright, doesn't smell though. It's a pretty fun and cute place. They also have some simple food that's mostly fried but goes well with liquor or beer. I'd definitely come back and I would recommend this place for sure. Walkable to subway stations too! read more

in 2016 I was roofied here. Had two drinks with friends, from 9-10pm on a Friday night. both Gin and Tonics and sat in the window with 4 people. My drinks were never unmonitored. Bouncer attempted to clear my second drink early which we found odd as it was 1/4 full. We left for icecream down the steet got in a cab and 30/40 min later I felt suddenly terrible. Asked to use a bathroom at a nearby restaurant and Crashed into a table and has a seizure (which i've never had before or since) lost control of body fluids and woke up with what was determined ocular damage from the trauma in my right eye and am now legally blind in that eye. I was lucky that I wasn't alone. I'm sure the drink was given to the wrong person. Was embarrassed to discuss it for a few years. read more

Friendly bartender, great drinks, pretty fast service for being extremely busy! The DJ/music was upbeat, very loud speakers. good size dance floor, you can maneuver your way through the bar without issues. There is an area in the back of the bar if you want to sit down at tables (seemed like there were always a table available). I didn't eat here, but there was a station where you could get fried food. Only odd thing was the kind of unfriendly bouncer. No one was at the door to ID, so walked in. Then a random employee checked our IDs. Then the bouncer walks up and says "He's not the bouncer" and asked to see IDs again. In the end, there wasn't any issue, but just odd they'd have some random employee checking IDs in the first place, and a bouncer getting bent out of shape when he wasn't at the entrance. While the crowds are flocking to wait in line at Stonewall on a Saturday night, you can find me sitting comfortably at the bar at Julius' having a beer and cheeseburger and watching Revenge of the Body Snatchers. Definitely a reprieve from weekend throngs of bridge an tunnel people, this CA$H ONLY hole in the wall is a real treat. Know your crowd though, chances are you will be on the younger swing of the age pendulum, which is chill if you're into that. If you get food at the grill inside, make sure you pay and tip the cook, just as you would the bartender. Definitely a must as far as historic gay bars go! read more

It was a disgusting sight and were so glad to have not ordered anything to eat. We couldn't even finish our draft beers ,now understand why their rating is pending. This is an awesome throwback gay bar in NYC that not only serves up some delicious, cheap cocktails, but they have some rockin' food, too! Supposedly this is the oldest continuously operating gay bar in New York... and, sure, while it has been open since 1867, it wasn't always gay! But, it sure is now... and has been for much longer than I've been alive. So, what can you expect if you head to Julius'? Well, the bar's been around for over 100 years--so it's divey! But, that's cool, right? For me it is because I love me a dive bar!! In traditional dive bar fashion, the front part of Julius' features a long bar with stools and some tables. The back of the bar has tables only and is set up so you can grab your bar food and relax a bit while eating. As for drinks, they have an awesome happy hour from Monday to Saturday that goes from 4p to 9p. Yep, you heard right, 9p!! Awesomeness!! During this time, they feature half-price well drinks and beer. The food at Julius' is awesome, too! Get the Julius Burger with cheese and bacon and the works! It's super tasty! I've been to Stonewall Inn (to learn about the riots) and now I have been to the oldest gay-operated bar in NYC. It feels good to learn about the LQBTQ history. Not to mention, getting a little tipsy never hurt anyone. My friend had a birthday-gathering here and by the time we came here at 7pm, the place was already packed! I had to squeeze my way to the bar and every nook and cranny was filled with bodies, booze and chemistry! I have to say it is a bit pricy here. $14 for 2 Blue Moon's on tap. Oh well. I went to Julius' as a tourist, wanting to soak in some history. After all, one of the pivotal events of gay history took place here in 1966, and it is where a whole host of gay greats have come to talk and drink... Truman Capote, Rudolph Nureyev, Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Edmund White, and so many others. I don't drink so I just got a tasty hamburger and onion rings, and the man at the grill could not have been more friendly and helpful. I loved that they had a poster of the classic film "Boys in the Band" in the back room. I understand that movie has some footage of Julius' in it. Julius' is a great little place. Go there just to see where history took place. Then go read about the Mattachine Society and pre-Stonewall gay history. You'll be glad you did. read more

This is just a wonderful place with great and drinks and don't forget the hamburgers. Julius is so welcoming to all who come. The bartenders are always wonderful but Adan is truly the best. He greets with a wonderful smile and makes you feel as he is there just for you. He is like a throwback to a bygone era. The really don't make too many people like that anymore. Great oldest gay bar in NYC. This is not your typical place where you have loud Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Beyonce songs blasting through the speakers (unless you play those songs on the jukebox). This is a no frills dive bar with decently priced (around 5-7 bucks) drinks. Just note that the bar is cash only. The bar is pretty spacious and not too crowded on Sunday nights. Plus, the bartenders that work on Sunday afternoons/nights are pretty funny. Even better, the bar has an onsite burger pit where one can get a variety of fried and greasy food. . . perfect to absorb the booze from your alcoholic beverages. I have not had the food but I have not heard any complaints. Most of the people are pretty friendly and the patrons' ages typically are the 30 and up crowd. Over the years I've gone back from time to time though I favored other types of bars. In the mid 00's, I went often because of the staff and the fact that customers talked to one another. A few years ago, I revisited, finding the cocktails somewhat less robust than in the past. Lots of memories of people in that place, some pictured on the walls. Sometimes, nothing makes me happier than a gay dive bar where my friends and I can sit down in the back at a table, hear all the pop music of the day playing (though not too loud so we can't hear each other -- Lord, I am getting old), and spill all the tea!
