We all know the Stonewall Inn as the site of the riots that kick-started the LGBTQ movement in 1969. In recent years, it has become more a tourist attraction, especially among out-of-town families looking to Instagram a "gay bar". However, just around the corner in a relatively nondescript building at West 10th and Waverly Place is a true gay bar. In fact, it's New York City's oldest gay bar having been established as gay in 1966. Inside it was full of regular locals with only the occasional appearance of a tourist, I.e.,if you don't count me and Jamie W. We didn't feel like interlopers though thanks to the been-there, done-that humor of Andre, the deadpan bartender, and the royal presence of Simone (photo https://yelp.to/4m9rPOTT68). We discovered Simone was featured in the 2022 book, "Legends of Drag: Queens of a Certain Age" which we ordered from Amazon right after. She regaled us with colorful stories of the West Village, while Andre poured us $10 cocktails, a Tequila Sunrise for me and a Maker's Mark & Ginger for Jamie (photo: https://yelp.to/glBTqXaTpj). We could see coming back and hanging out here a lot longer like a gay Norm and Cliff. Gee, as if you didn't know Vera was just a beard. COCKTAILS - 4 stars...certainly potent enough and well priced AMBIANCE - 5 stars...a truly authentic gay bar with history and special guests like Simone SERVICE - 5 stars...a friendly bartender in Andre TOTAL - 5 stars...truly gay RELATED - Exploring NYC's dining and drinking scene? Intimate dive-y cash only gay bar! Met up a friend here to catch up and it was definitely the right place to listen to jukebox tunes and have a cold beer to cocktail! Service was great! Servers were attentive and made us aware of the cash only policy and ATMs.

Such a great classic burger, I love how late the kitchen stays open and this burger just hits the spot.

The vibe there is incredible and we did have a great time plus the waiter who took care of us was such an adorable man and took time chatting with us etc and that was really appreciated. Also they don't get a cocktail menu by hisself but they can do mostly any cocktails which was really awesome

We love this place!! We started visiting over the last two years and have to check it out when in NYC. Such a cozy and friendly neighborhood bar. We adore Chad who is the sweetest and most welcoming guy here (and overall a gem). The services is always spot-on and the food is also really delicious. We always enjoy Julius' martinis along with their burgers, fries and mozzarella sticks. Such a great spot, now a historic place and the oldest gay bar in NYC. We can't wait to go back and see Chad soon!!! He's the best!!!

Pretty cool bar with a storied past and nice options. The food is mediocre (but cheap) and the drinks are not that great, so you're mostly coming for the atmosphere of hanging out and talking, and appreciating the bar's past.

Quite a few tables and seats but usually pretty packed. Lovely staffs that are all friendly, including the bouncer at the door. Most customers that go there are friendly too. Nice atmosphere and pretty loud so you got to yell a bit since there's always so many people and noises. Nice music and quite a lot of drinks. They even have cocktails which some bars don't, they have 'gay beer' which is a lager but pretty light for me. Tastes nice though and gender neutral restroom. The door doesn't lock and not the cleanest but it's alright, doesn't smell though. It's a pretty fun and cute place. They also have some simple food that's mostly fried but goes well with liquor or beer. I'd definitely come back and I would recommend this place for sure. Walkable to subway stations too!

12 gays from Boston wander into a little bar in the village -- and loved it. The place was fun and friendly. Will happily go back.

Great drinks and burgers. No "menu" but get whatever you want from the basic ingredients. Pleasant atmosphere with slightly loud music.

My favorite bar in the area. Always great to stop in for food or drinks. Cash only but there is an ATM!

It's a classic after-work watering hole for the finance workers, consultants, and attorneys who populate the area. The decor is awesome, and makes you feel fuzzy and at home!!! But let's talk about the real star of the show: the burger. I've had my fair share of burgers in NYC, but this one takes the cake. The patty is juicy and flavorful, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of char on the outside. The bun is soft and pillowy, holding everything together without getting soggy. And the bacon is mmm mmmmmmm PERFECT!!! Trust me when I say it's worth braving the sea of suits just to get your hands on one of these bad boys. So if you find yourself in Chinatown after work or on a weekend night out with friends (or even alone), do yourself a favor and stop by Whiskey Tavern for some great drinks (not watered down!) and an unforgettable burger experience. You won't regret it! But the REAL reason this place is so special is the PEOPLE. This place is like the bar from that show "Cheers", but in 2026! Just the most amazing people Ever running the show. Upon arriving, I was immediately greeted by the manager and other staff to make sure I was all settled for my party, which I really appreciated. This space has a partnership with a pizza place up the street to order food but also provides flexibility to bring in your own food which a lot of places do not allow. They also allowed me to bring balloons and cake which many places also don't allow. I had around 40 people and there was plenty of space to sit down or stand. It wasn't too loud so I was able to have a conversation with friends while also enjoying the music. The music was great and we even stayed afterwards to enjoy the DJ and the vibes were still strong. If you're looking for a private space, this is the perfect spot for your party! My friends are still talking about how cool this space was and were very impressed!
