Well, of course, there's a gay bar at the corner of Gay St and Christopher St. Jamie W and I didn't know if it's the gayest corner in the West Village, but Pieces appeared appropriately decked out in rainbow colors. Walking over from Julius's and headed to Ty's, we were doing a gay bar circuit and knew this was an essential stop since it's been in business since 1993 We could tell it was pretty well established with a schedule of drag shows and trivia competitions. We were here in the middle of the afternoon just as they were setting up a Wheel of Fortune game. My absolute favourite watering hole dowtown. Come for happy hour specials, drag queen shows, various themed nights, or just on an afternoon to kill a little time and relax. The bartenders are always friendly, and the crowd overall is super welcoming to newbies. Even if you don't know anyone there, people are welcoming of casual chat to people sitting next to you, by and large. My friend met a male stripper at a pizza place we went to who worked at Pieces, and the stripper recommended that we stop by this gay bar. We never did see him though. Instead, we were able to catch an hour of the drag show that seems to occur every Sunday at 8pm. The performers were entertaining and engaging and involved the audience into their performance. The interior is small, but we found seats front and center! Definitely a spot to check out if you're not afraid of this kind of material! One way to protect yourself from being charged like a cocktail in a nice glass (that keeps the ice colder, mind you) but instead for a mediocre drink in a PLASTIC SOLO CUP, is to pay cash, not with a card. If ask you to cough up say $20 for a "swill/well" drink, then leave and not pay. It's simple economics for not being overcharged. 2 stars b/c some the shows are fun. read more

In recent months, I am extremely happy with my weekly visits due to the relaxed atmosphere and superlative bartenders Jason and Jamison. These gents are very friendly and highly efficient. Great spot in Manhattan for a fun night! The drag show was entertaining, and it was a relaxed, unpretentious vibe which I thoroughly enjoyed. Bartenders were warm and welcoming, not to mention easy on the eyes ;) My friend and I had some confusion about our bill, and Greg was extremely patient and communicative with us despite our drunk and confrontational energy at times, as we worked out that the confusion was on our end (sorry!). We went for a drag show on a Saturday night and we got there a little late so it was incredibly packed. Made it difficult to move around and the visibility wasn't great but it was still a fun show. Huge fan of this place. I have been going to this bar for a little over a decade (man time flies in NYC) and I do not think that I have ever had a bad time here. Granted, I normally visit this place on week nights or Sunday afternoons when it's not too crowded. For the most part, the drinks are pretty strong (depending on the bartender) and relatively cheap. During the week, the crowd can be quite diverse, based on race, age, shape, and sexual orientation. For me, Pieces is a great meeting place to grab a few drinks before hitting up a dance spot. Also, it is perfect for spending a relatively relaxed night at the bar. Most of the cliente is very friendly and will spark up a conversation if you are willing. This was the most unprofessional bar I've ever been too. Me and my other two friends went here for drag night and expected to have a great time and were blatantly accused of "stealing" tips from the dance floor while trying to pick up the bills and put them into the tip jar for the performers. I have never been treated in such a despicable manner - it was inexcusable. We even proved to the bouncers we had zero dollar bills on us by opening our purses and jackets and they still treated us as if we were lepers. We will never go back here ever again. I am New York City born and raised. Christopher street was my home coming out as a young baby gay waaay back in the day. Needless to say, the neighborhood has been gentrified, and is not what it used to be, but we should be able to walk into a queer space and not have to be on guard. These bars need to stop hiring straight men who don't know how to be ok in queer spaces. The guy checking our ID was extremely rude to us, and on the way out, accused us, the only people of color in the bar that night, of pushing people on our way out. Mind you, back at the ranch, I promise you that was far from the case. The NYC gay scene has gone to absolute trash. read more

this place is SUPER small and there was barely any seating inside so we only came in to go out. the bathroom is all the way in the back but there's really only one hallway through the entire place so you have to pass through BODIES before being able to reach the back. there was drag performances going on but honestly, it looked very "last minute-ish" where they didn't have an actual performance thought out and they were just walking and lip-syncing. overall, cute but disappointing. maybe i'll come back and try it out again when it isn't so crowded. read more

What a night out on the town in NYC this turned out to be. Now let me tell you that I did not plan to end up at Pieces, nor had I ever heard of Pieces, but I'm glad that I ended up there, because we had a good time! Pieces is tucked away sort of, off the main rode, in what seems to be a nice neighborhood. It's got that outside curb appeal that screams LGBTQ are welcome, which I love to see. The drag show was really fun. The stage and performance space is pretty small, but the queens do a great job of putting on a big performance in that little space. Once the show was over, we had an absolute blast dancing. They played such awesome music and remixes. I kept thinking we would stay for one more song, but then 5 songs later we were still dancing. My first and only issue with Pieces was that they were letting way too many people inside. You couldn't move at all once you got through the door. It felt very unsafe. Once the show was on intermission, things cleared up a little and it was much much better. Long story short, I may have showed up in pieces, but I left feeling whole. My gf and I had a quick trip to NYC and decided to check out Pieces during their Frisky Fridays. We were excited to see some NY drag and Ruby Roo and Brita Filter did not disappoint! Ruby had her new fabulous wig that touched the heavens and we loved the banter that Brita and Ruby had together. They connected to the audience, improvised, and made the games very fun! They danced, whipped their hair, and pranced in high heels in a tight crowd better than anyone else in heels that night. There were two drunk straight white women (of course) who thought that this was the night they were going to fulfill their fantasies and gain two new gay best friends who were glorious drag queens. They heckled them, danced in their performance area (which if you've been to Pieces you know it's not much), and were in general being entitled straight white women striving to fulfill their true destiny of being annoying. Ruby and Brita handled these women very professionally. Did they call them out- Yes, and with tact. And if you are a drunk straight white woman thinking drag queens want to be your friend because, duh, you're you, then yeah you will get called out, too. (You're not cute) The bartender who Ruby is pretty sure is going to steal her new blonde wig was sweet, perky, fast, professional, and must have learned how to read lips because it gets loud in there. 5 Stars for Ruby Roo and Brita Filter (and her jewel encrusted water pitcher). If you want to go to a place with shirtless bartenders that are all jaded and not really fond this is the place for you. After paying $20 cash told me to get inside I waited 47 minutes to get to drugs. One drink was $26 for Bacardi and Coke. The bartenders save less than Tuesday about their jobs despite the fact that they had many willing patrons desperate to get drugs. I'm not sure if it's the management or the staff but either way it was a shit show. I guess the cash Only door policy was a way for them to skate pay taxes but whatever I'll leave that for New York City to investigate overall it was the shittiest experience I've had in a bar in New York City and I've lived here for 47 years read more

I'm leaving this review because I left my card at pieces last weekend I called them during the week to see if they had it. They told me no, I went in person to check and they had it. After I got my card back I checked my charges and I had a charge for 869$ for Best Buy in the Bronx. My card was only in the hands of pieces for a week so clearly it was one of their employees. Not quite divey enough to call yourself a dive bar, and just a bit too trashy to be classy like, say Vlada (although, I must admit I've had some trashtastic times myself at the aforementioned establishment. I think I was talking more about atmosphere than anything else, though...). Still, you wouldn't have it any other way. You is what you is. And while you may not be my fave, you know who you are and there's something to be said for that. It sticks to the standards of gay bar nights: karaoke, drag queens, go-go boys, 2 for 1 happy hours, etc. It's definitely my favorite of the Sheridan Square bars (beats the hell out of Duplex or Monster), but like many of the bars in this area, it's of another time. Decent bar, strong drinks but still overpriced, great drag performers and fun shows. It was my go to bar in NYC until the bouncer decided to steal my driver's license on Halloween night. I'm 23 years old and have a valid DL, which the bouncer seemed to think was a fake and refused to give it back until I had the police arrive (an hour after I called them, while I was obviously trying to enjoy my Halloween night with friends at the bar). I hope the bouncer (shortish guy, thin, refused to give his name and had a terrible attitude) either gets retrained on how to spot fakes or just fired, since he is ruining the bar with his incompetence at his job. read more

Oh my god, post office Thursday! Wandering around the West Village, looking for some entertainment on a ho hum Thursday evening, this straight girl sees a rainbow of neon light in a Christopher Street window. It was a knee jerk reaction for me to point, and after my gay friend saw it, there was no turning back. We were going to PIECES! We walk in and Britney's playing. Men from every walk of life are mingling about the bar and things just seem typically festive UNTIL the clock struck, hmm, I believe it was 9.... then a giant game of POST OFFICE began to unravel at the bar. What is this post office, you may ask. Of course, when I first heard it my mind imagined all kinds of "big package" puns, but the game is actually much more tame than you would expect. Everyone gets number stuck onto their shirt so all at the bar can see it and you can see everyone else's. Pens and paper are also put out on the bar and you can start writing little flirty messages to whichever hot number strikes your fancy. You give the message to the post man, who puts it in the mailbox of the number/person that you wrote to and then every so often announcements are made to tell numbers "5," "18" and "1" to pick up their messages. This is so fun. Somehow, as a straight girl at the bar, I was still getting messages, one string from the straight male bouncer who asked me inappropriate questions about marshmallow fluff. The other messages were from a man who was trying to hit on my male friend. He was explaining the intimate details of his last relationship via handwritten "post office" letters and asking me what kind of a chance he had with my friend who wasn't speaking to him at all and desperately trying to avoid his post office memos. This was a little tragic, but sort of sadly entertaining nonetheless. I spent most of the night trying to verbally outdo the bouncer with uncouth paper messages. I would have my friend walk by the bouncer (because I was too afraid he'd actually start speaking to me if I saw him face to face) and drop my messages off to the postman. Then I would sit drinking vodka tonics and vigilantly attempt to avoid eye contact with the bouncer. I'm sure I was also florid thinking about the ridiculous things I put into writing, something my mother taught me NEVER to do, even if just a number and not a name is attached to the evidence. I had a great time mainly because of this unexpected game that I jumped into wholeheartedly. PS: I ran out of the bar, past the bouncer without so much as a smile, wink, shoulder brush or eye contact. So, I guess my pride did fall to PIECES that evening. I really love this place- it's a classic. This bar has enough personality for the whole west village. The decor is simple and relatively dark. They have a bunch of events from Karaoke to Drag nights so there typically is something to do beyond just drinking, but even if you want to, the drinks are reasonably priced and boozy enough. The energy they use is 100% wind. You've got to love it! Hope to come back when Adele and Jennifer Lawrence come back :) read more
