Went here for a friends birthday and had a great experience! They were actually closed for a private event downstairs and not opening the upstairs until 11. We got there around 10 and he was so kind as to let us upstairs and even our friends who came shortly after. The music upstairs was Afrobeats, hip hip and R&B. It's a regular west village bar crowd and atmosphere so drinks are just your standard. No one knew what the price of drinks was, each person was charging something different. One person would get charged $12 for a surfside, one would be charged $10 with a free shot. Mixed drinks tasted like they were watered down and doubles were $30. The bartenders had attitude and our server max was a mess. She drank my $30 drink and then told me she would give me a free shot. We were walking by when we saw the sign, margaritas, cocktail, beer wine and happy hour. It was around 5pm and happy hour goes until 8 pm. Good music, strong drinks and friendly bartender. The place was pretty quiet so you can get a drink quickly and have a conversation. They are open til 4 am so I think it gets crazy, late night but happy hour is chill in a good way. read more

Me and my friend group of over 20+ people came to this bar to celebrate my friends 21st birthday. She reserved the room weeks before and was very clear with the amount of people and the time, everything was previously set in stone. The owner (Kevin, who is an older white man) was excessively and unnecessarily aggressive with specifically the birthday girl and other Black individuals within the group. The way in which the owner spoke to Black people vs white people within the group was apparently clear. After an hour or so of our presence in the seperate party room the owner came in and told us he was opening the room to the public despite the fact that the friend/ birthday girl(who is a Black women) reserved the room until 2 am. When we asked why the reservation wasn't being honored, the owner rudely (and incorrectly) told us that we "only had 10 people in the room" which simply wasn't true. Me and about 3 other people from the group were waiting to use the bathroom when the owner got incredibly intense and personal and started yelling in the faces of not just me but the birthday girl. We respectfully told him that we had reserved the room and had undeniably more than 10 people in the room AND that we had all already bought multiple drinks. He responded with even more aggression saying that we weren't spending enough money and proceeded to (as a grown *white* man) get in the faces of 2 Black girls and tell them that they were "fucking lying" and that we weren't allowed to wait in the bathroom line and had to go back to the room and was in total completely unnecessary aggressive towards specifically the Black women in our group. When I (a white person) tried to make him aware of this unnecessary aggression he ignored me and continued to only be aggressive with the two Black women in line for the bathroom. The overall experience was not just unnecessary but extraordinarily aggressive and felt particularly racially profiled. When this was made aware to other management we received apologies, some fake and some genuine but overall would not recommend to POC specifically Black people given the obviously anti-Black racism ingrained within the management. read more

only gave one star because the staff/bouncers were straight up hostile. had to deal with multiple attempts to start a fight from people who worked there. it was highly unprofessional and rather pathetic. wasn't just us either, everyone in the bar damn near had a story of the afore mentioned staff causing problems. we went there for a friends birthday. we rented out the bar and overall the normal bar atmosphere was fine, bartenders were solid, music was good and vibes were fun. read more

Solas in the East Village is one of our go-to bars on weekends for happy hour or while waiting to be seated at a nearby restaurant. They offer many happy hour drink selections from cocktails, wines, and draft beers. I heard that pre pandemic it can get crazy there upstairs with live DJ and sometimes comedy act. We can't wait for this pandemic to be over to come here and have a drink or two during busier hours. read more

We came in here and got drinks before our other dinner reservation. It's a dark ambiance, but it's nice inside with a decent amount of space. They have a nicely sized bar, and the margarita on the rocks is good. Nothing crazy special about this place, but it was a nice spot to grab a drink before heading to dinner! I know that this is also a dance club at night, so I would be interested in returning one day to see what that is like. I'm assuming that the vibe is completely different pre-dinner when you're just having casual drinks and chatting with friends at a table. The crowd of people here during pre-dinner time is older/middle-aged people. I come here every Tuesday for their Zouk event. I've also been here for their regular Sunday night Milonga called, El Destino. Their Facebook page mentions other regular weekly events, including Urban Kizomba on Monday's, Salsa on Wednesdays, and Bachata on Thursday's (1st & 3rd). There's also a vegan event on Thursdays. They have a nice backroom, with a good floor for dancing. There's a DJ booth on the far side of the room, and a bar in the back (though I've never seen it open while I've been there for the event space. The bar itself in the main entrance area has a decent happy hour, and I would recommend the sangria - both red or white. It's BYOF. read more

I downloaded yelp just to give a review for Solas Bar, that's how great my experience was there! I reserved the upstairs space for my birthday party, which was completely free. I had around 50 people in my party, and there was more than enough room. The staff, specifically Aly, Matthew and Max were absolutely amazing!!! So incredibly kind, helpful and a great time. Terrible place to go out for drinks. We came in and got yelled at by the bartender demanding we buy drinks! We came to check it out, but the place was just not the vibe. Some ladies went to use the bathroom and some were ready to head out. My friend ended up leaving her phone at the establishment and when we called her phone to see where she may have left it, a bartender who works here Anthony, answered. When we came to the bar to pick it up, he gave a whole lecture of how it's illegal to come into an establishment to use the bathroom, which it isn't. The bouncer never said anything about bathrooms being for patrons only nor is that a viable law in the state!! Anthony claimed that he doesn't have the phone and played dumb the whole time. Demanding that we bring all our friends back and buy drinks which was ridiculous. I am sober, so for someone like him to demand I buy a drink goes against all codes of ethics a business should run by. The way he made us feel, unsafe, disempowered, and feeling stuck, is something no women should experience. NYC is already unsafe as if it and it is people like Anthony in making women feel unsafe and disregarding our comments about the place. We pay $20 for a drink, and turns out he stole $5 from her phone. He pulls out the phone from his pocket and we tell him "if you think you're teaching us some type of lesson your not. You're just being a b!tch.' And walk away. If you look through all the negative reviews on here and see the pathetic owner of this subpar business, Kevin replying and retaliating against every negative review, that says A LOT about an establishment. The only regret we had, other than visiting Solas that night was not calling the cops. read more

It's a solid bar in East Village. There's a ton of young people, so it feels like a NYU bar. We went on a Friday night and the place gets pretty packed around and just before midnight. However, it quickly cleared out after that. The music is pop centric, and they play a lot of classic dance tunes. The place isn't too suitable for dancing tho. The music is loudest on the first floor, but there isn't too much space. You have to wait to go upstairs, but the vibes are more chill there. Not many people were dancing since the music was noticeably quiet. It would be a good place if you were trying to meet and talk to people though. There's a few seats here and there, but expect to stand mostly. Overall, a solid East Village bar if you'd like to just pop in and check it out. There isn't a cover or a line, so a good place to start the night! read more

Posting this a little later than I intended, but I had a truly horrendous experience with the staff here in November. My friend had rented out one of the rooms for her birthday. Upon arriving, we went up to the bouncer simply to ask where to go for the party. The bouncer started yelling at us in an awful manner to get in the line. We had no problem waiting in line, we just didn't know if we were at the right place. Once we got to the front of the line to have our ID's/ vax cards checked, my friend was going through her wallet to get out the necessary documents for MAYBE 30 seconds when the bouncer, once again, started screaming at us to get out of the line if we weren't ready. I calmly asked him to just wait a second and we all had everything ready to which he started making rude and snooty comments towards us and let us know he didn't have to let us in. (In my humble opinion the bouncer has some type male authority complex and just wanted to thrust his "power" upon others just cause he could.) After calmly talking to him, he finally let us in. We went around asking for where the private room is, which no one helped with or told us how to get to. I ended up talking to one of the bartenders and telling her how awful my experience was just getting into the club and she apologized and offered me a shot, which I thought was very kind. She poured the shot and some random man grabbed it from the bar before I could grab it, chugged it and swiftly walked away. I told the bartender, who was standing there the whole time and she said and did nothing. At this point, we wanted to be no where near this awful establishment. We went to leave and as we were leaving the bouncer shouted obscene and rude comments in our direction as we left. He literally shouted at us as we walked down the street. At this point, we did yell back a bit because there is only so much one can take. I will literally never set foot in this bar ever again and will strongly advise against any of my friends to patronize this establishment based on the way we were treated. My friends and I came to Solas pretty much every single weekend during our mid 20's. It was pretty much our stomping ground and we became pretty friendly with the bouncers and the bartenders. We found ourselves nearby this past weekend while celebrating our friend's 33rd birthday and couldn't resist taking a trip down memory lane and headed for Solas once again. The bartenders are quick, the main dance floor is fun, and I don't think I've ever witnessed a single fight. Great spot, esp if you're in your early to mid twenties. 30's.. Solas was the spot I'd go to in college thinking I was cool. A decade later I ended up back there for a private event upstairs and it was more or less the same, just slightly more run down. The space is like a dive and has seen better days, but it serves its purpose. I like the upstairs space better, especially the weird curtained off lounge room. Decent happy hour deals too. read more

Came to take a bachata class, dance and have a good time. The class and dance floor was a good time however the bartenders lack service etiquette. Went to the bar, bartender acknowledged I was at the bar however proceeded to hop on his phone and text. Few minutes later was rudely assisted, asked for a pint of Guinness and was given a half pint of foam. I told the bartender I didn't want it and another bartender (or bf) came out to ask what was wrong with the pint, I expressed my concern and was kicked out of the bar. Which was the cutest thing ever cause apparently their feelings were were hurt for not admitting to pouring such a horrible pint of the black stuff. Anyway, for dancing! I recommend! Pretty chill place to hang out with the girls. The music was good and the drinks are worth getting. But it depends on which bartender you order from because my first drink was pretty weak vs. my second drink from someone else which was much better. Two stars off due to security though. Out of the many bar/lounges that I have went to, this place has pretty solid security. I know that the security guards (for upstairs) are suppose to be there for safety but it got pretty annoying after a while because they were roaming around every 5-10minutes glaring down each table. It is uncomfortable honestly... Perhaps tone it down a bit or just stand in one place?! Because it makes me want to leave since I am continuously being stared down. read more

One time I was in solas, a bouncer told me to arbitrarily pay $20 upfront to be let in to the dance floor. Despite my reservations, I came back with a few friends and one was rejected for having a "fake ID" even though we're all 24 and were told to leave. then the bouncer said I had a "bitchy look" and I needed to respect him and refused to scan our IDs until I "fixed the way I look". As much as I love coming here, I do not like the disrespect from these people. I will not be visiting solas for a while especially if these kinds of bouncers still work here. read more
