The third floor seemed to have more standing space. The first two floors were the most packed. Multiple floors and each floor has a different DJ featuring a different vibe of music. At least if you don't like the music, you can move on to a different floor. Since it's super dark, and the stairs are straight up pitch black, I can see how someone could potentially have a difficult time seeing the stairs and climbing them. They should add some neon lights or something like it in the middle of the stairs for safety reasons. I did not enjoy the music selections the night that I went. But I heard the music here just depends on the night, it's different vibes, and they switch it up.

I went to their Gyalhattan event, which was a mix of dancehall and hip hop, and the energy was great. The crowd is mixed but tends to skew younger, and it attracts people from a lot of different backgrounds. Visually, the space is very cool. The dark interior is covered with artistic, almost glow-in-the-dark designs that give the club a distinctive vibe. The staff has also always been pleasant and attentive, from the bouncers to coat check to the cleaning staff. Every interaction I've had there has been positive. Bathrooms are surprisingly clean too (and actually feel safe). There can sometimes be a line to get in, but it usually moves quickly. For ticketed events like Gyalhattan, prices are reasonable, and if you plan ahead you can sometimes grab early bird tickets for free. They have a good-sized dance floor, and DJs rotate throughout the night, with the best sets usually hitting after 1 a.m. There's also a lounge seating area if you want to take a break from the dance floor. I arrived in 2008 with very little, and when Graydon Carter revived the restaurant in 2009, I was beginning a rise of my own, first at a large global bank and then, to my astonishment, at one of the city's most powerful investment firms. The suits were daily, the walls were gold, and the pressure was so consuming that even success could feel like a form of attrition. After a few years, I moved to a smaller firm with Southern roots, where the culture was more humane, the work gave me greater autonomy, and I produced some of the strongest results of my career, even within an industry still governed by fear, greed, and status. Inside, the red booths, low lighting, generous spacing, and hand-painted monkey murals made lunch feel ceremonial without becoming stiff. The room was timeless and handsome, with polished service, quality food, and the subtle assurance of a place where you could be proud to bring someone important. I especially remember sitting in one of those booths with two mentors, each only a few years older than I was and therefore close enough in vintage to feel relatable, trustworthy, and genuinely within reach. One had entered my life after I left the larger firm and helped me understand an earlier chapter that had also ended abruptly and, at the time, felt deeply unfair; the other had guided me through the smaller firm where I finally found a more sustainable way to work. Over that long lunch, I introduced them, we discussed several promising ideas, and for a moment my career seemed to have reached the point where relationships, experience, and opportunity were finally converging. One of those ideas consumed an extraordinary amount of my time and energy, and I believed it might become the foundation of my next chapter. Instead, the arrangement eventually turned on me, the role I thought I had earned never materialized, and the business itself sputtered. My professional life, financial footing, and pride all collapsed just as COVID was beginning. Then Monkey Bar closed in 2020, which made the ending feel almost unnervingly complete: the restaurant, the city, and the version of myself built around New York finance all went dark at once. For years, I experienced that ending as devastating and unfair; now I can see it as wisdom delivered through an unnecessarily rough process. The restaurant's later revival by a Chicago hospitality group feels fitting because it still honors tradition and ceremony while allowing the old forms to evolve into something healthier, looser, and more current. I have not been back since that lunch, but a return now would feel like visiting the museum of my past, not reclaiming a life that asked too much, gave too little, and finally lost its hold on me. Even now, I remember Monkey Bar as a great Midtown lunch in a memorable room, surrounded by the residue of old ambitions and the gratitude of having survived them. The cocktails were sharp, the service was impeccable, and the dining room carried that glamorous old New York energy without feeling trapped by it. I remain deeply fond of the place, partly for what it was and partly for what it witnessed. Some restaurants become attached to a chapter of your life, and Monkey Bar holds mine with unusual grace.

FIVE STARS FOR RUMPUS ROOM! We just planned my boyfriend's 30th birthday party at Rumpus Room (a Mardi Gras themed party for over 60 guests) - and I can't say enough about how amazing the night turned out. The party was so much fun, and it wouldn't have been such a perfect night without all the help we received from the owner, Gabe. In our planning, we reached out to many different venues - but it was easy to tell that Gabe was by far the most helpful and accommodating of them all. Every single question we asked him, Gabe went above and beyond to get it done. Gabe helped us secure all the extra necessities to make our night as special as possible. The party was enhanced by on-theme decorations (which Gabe helped us hang himself), catered food (which Gabe helped us get from Fool's Gold, the bar next door), and a customized drink menu (which Gabe + team helped create for us). Gabe was accessible throughout the entire process - he answered all of our questions through emails, texts, and phone calls - which is not the kind of service you would get from a regular corporate bar or restaurant. The space and lighting contributed to making it the perfect atmosphere. The DJ (Marc Montoya) created a great party vibe the entire night. AND Gabe actually took some professional photos of us, so we have the memories of this night for a long time to come. From start to finish Gabriel and his staff were top class. Reached out to Gabriel through email to book my birthday and he was very prompt and more than helpful with all information and instructions for the booking. We were looking for a place where we could hang out just the six of us and dance without being stepped on all night and standing behind ten people to order a drink. This was the perfect spot very intimate feel with awesome music and a very mixed crowd of people which we really enjoyed. We were greeted at the table with a sign for my birthday which read "Rays Birthday at the Rumpus." The staff was excellent throughout the whole night making sure we had everything we needed and even letting us skip the line for bathrooms since we had a VIP table. At one point I forgot my phone in the bathroom and the bathroom attendant brought it to our table for me. One person in particular Renee was the highlight of our night constantly checking on us and making sure we were having a great time. The security was top notch as well. The music by Dina Regine did not disappoint either. She had everyone up and dancing all night with an excellent mix from all time periods and genres. I was having a hard time trying to plan my big birthday celebration until we discovered the Rumpus Room. Shortly after we sent an email to inquire about the option of organizing my birthday there, Gabriel called me to discuss options and he was so helpful and accommodating. We booked the private area with the private bar so we could bring 35 people and it offered a great value for such a big group and for the great options provided. We just had the party this Saturday and the private space felt spacious and comfortable for my big group to dance, mingle, and enjoy the private bar which was well staffed and convenient for everyone to get drinks served any time. The music was the best and everyone danced the whole time. The service was so great and everyone was incredibly helpful. The bouncer that was looking after our private area was so fun and helpful. I would highly recommend this venue for any party where you want your group to get a great service, space and just the perfect music to dance to all night. The Rumpus Room was the perfect spot to host our 30th birthday party. We worked with Gabriel, who made the entire process seamless from start to finish. When I first reached out, we had a detailed phone call and went over all the options and possible add ons. We decided to go with a minimum spend, although there were also great open bar options. We had 40-50 people in the back area, which was roped off with a bouncer and had its own dedicated bar and bartender. Gabriel set us up with complimentary birthday signs and sparklers, and even VIP cards that let us cut the bathroom line. He also gave us recommendations for vendors for balloons and the photobooth take over, which we took advantage of. All of the staff were friendly and accommodating throughout the night. I celebrated my 24th birthday at Rumpus Room this year, and I couldn't have imagined a better venue! I coordinated with the owner about six weeks in advance, and my group was set up in the main area. The staff was extremely accommodating and made everything run smoothly the night of. This is by far one of my favorite clubs in Manhattan. There is no negative attitude at the front door keeping you outside in the cold for no reason. If there's space inside, they'll get you in. The dress code is lenient and the staff is friendly. Above anything, the sound system in here is amazing! It has a full, warm sound. It envelopes the dance floor, And really sets the ambience for the place, letting everyone get down whenever and however they want. We had a wonderful time last night. Staff treated us amazingly well. They were very polite when they asked for our ID. We were visiting from Florida and will make it a point to come by anytime we are in town. I don't drink but they were wonderful and didn't mind at all. It was very festive when they brought out drinks with sparklers on them. DJ Mark was fantastic. The manager (in a red jacket) was very nice and super sexy! Looks like a James Bond villain. Hands down one of the best places to celebrate a birthday in NYC! We worked with Gabriel to book two tables for our group of 15ish. The entire process was so easy and organized, and the night went above and beyond our expectations. Fantastic music, great crowd. We were up in the front but had plenty of space/never felt too crowded, and the pass to skip the bathroom line was a huge perk. We had a great time on a Friday night. We have never been out in NYC and we refuse to pay a ridiculous cover charge to listen to crappie music. The DJ was great. We were able to dance to every song. Played every genre and music through the years. Cover charge wasn't bad at all. Less than $20 each. Bouncer at the door was straight forward. Held a graduation party at Rumpus Room and it was a blast! Gabriel, Jahan, and the entire staff were wonderful. Professional, attentive, proactive, and fun. We haven't experienced customer service like this in years! The DJ was excellent, vibe was just right. Photo Booth a big hit. The party ended up being exactly what our daughter was hoping for. I just hosted a birthday party with a guest list of 100+ people and had a great time with all my friends. The owner, Gabriel, was a pleasure to work with and was accommodative of all my requests. He was also great to work with - responding to every request quickly and being very organized throughout the whole process. Also, the drinks and music were great. This place is the re-incarnated Sapphire Lounge. Having been a regular there for years, I must admit that I was a bit worried it may lose its vibe. Far from it. The Rumpus Room is the continuance of a legendary NY night club. A dance floor that allows for a serious workout to some of the best music while allowing for some quality time to be sent in the cosy back. Gotta love this place. read more

Music was super fun for dancing and knowing all the words, and the space was fantastic to move around and talk to different groups of people. Gabriel and his team were super responsive for booking; the night of, the team was aware of our budget and the service was personalized and really smooth. Rumpus Room has such a great vibe from the moment you walk in. On Halloween night, they had disco music playing, and the crowd was extremely lively. The lights and ambiance really helped make our Halloween night super fun. Dancers were also hyping up the crowd on the stage. Overall, I highly recommend the bar to everyone!! read more

Ladies can get in free before 10 PM on some days, and after that, it seems to be $16 before midnight. Not sure what the price after midnight is; in the past when I've walked past, the bouncer was saying $20, but maybe that has changed. That said, the night we were there, between 10-11:30 PM, it was pretty empty and low-energy. I'm not sure if it was because of the weather or what, but it was disappointing. There are 2 parts to the club - a Latin music part, and a Hip Hop/Pop/Techno part and you can go in between them. We checked out both - the music was definitely better on the Latin side. Even though more people came in, no one was really dancing. Everyone was just standing or sitting along the wall or at the bar. I know people need to warm up, but still! The DJ was good! 3 stars for the lesson, the tequila shot, and the Latin music, but I'm being generous. Note: coat check is $3.
