Worked in Manhattan for over 30 years. Had never been to, much less heard of this spot. Saw David Berkele and Antje Duvekot tonight. They were amazing, but this is a review of the venue, not them. The staff was really friendly and very attentive. I'm not a cocktail person, so just had bourbon and beer - reasonably priced.. The mediteranean platter was really nice. Okay the music gets 5 starts for sure-I have seen some great shows here including a reason Balkan Festival which was fantastic and also had the chance to see the Mingus Big Band in the past which was amazing. The place itself is very nice and all the seats have a good view. The issue though is the FOOD is awful---we ordered a Mediterranean plate which came with three tiny dips and NOTHING to dip into it--no pita, no veggies--nothing! We asked the waiter and he shrugged his shoulders and said no it comes with nothing...I think it was over $20 too. Then we ordered a cheese plate and that was tiny as well--we were all very frustrated and had to get food and/or drinks because of the $20 minimum/person at the tables. Also the waitstaff always seems annoyed and rushed--they just don't seem like they want to be there. I still will return because of the tremendous music they have fairly often--but if it wasn't for that I would not go back. read more

DROM is a cool jazz club located downstairs in Alphabet City. The dimly lit room has a bar running nearly its full length with the performance stage set in one corner on the opposite side of the room. The excellent sound system and good acoustics allow you to hear the musicians at their best. They offer a limited, but adequate food menu for dinner. Good venue hosting great musicians! DROM is in East Village, so there's plenty of places to grab a bite before a show / performance. It's located on the ground/basement level, so it can be a bit hard to find. I appreciate that the bathrooms were clean and spacious. There's a $20 table minimum per person if you decide to find a seat during a performance. There's a great variety of beers (~$8-10), wines, and cocktails ($17-20). The tables are a bit narrow, though. At the bar there's a $20 credit card minimum as well. The servers seemed friendly. It seemed like there may have been some small sound performance issues at the venue but I didn't notice any issues. read more

I've been here twice now, once for a 2000s party and once for a 90s Eurodance party. The 2000s party did not have a skilled DJ at all. I could do better with my Spotify playlist. But what was disrespectful was the lack of free water. I found myself drinking tap out of the restroom - realizing how degrading was - was then leaving. Now - the 90s party was abysmal. The worst DJ set I've ever experienced. The audience was also bizarre and nobody seemed to actually know or want to know how to dance. The DJ made it worse. It was awful awful and I will never return. read more

I came here tonight to see a potential wedding band with my friends for what should have been an exciting and light evening. After the band ended around 9:15/9:20, we were finishing our drinks and conversing while waiting for our uber. At 9:40, a women who I presume to be either the owner or manager started yelling "HEY" "HEY" "HEY!!!!" at us from across the room until she got our attention and when we looked over, confused, she said "We're trying to close up and we're waiting on you." We were visibly taken aback and told her we were waiting on an uber to which she replied in a nasty and pointed tone, "well I need to close up and you're preventing that" indicating for us to wait outside in the 15 degree temperature for our car after we just spent our money at her restaurant for EXTREMELY subpar food and wine (overcooked and chewy chicken sandwich similar to what you could get in a school cafeteria for $22). Maybe don't have your hours online listed open until 2 AM and expect everyone to scatter 15 minutes after the band ends when the staff served us a bottle of wine less than 30 minutes ago? And the fact that we were already actively waiting on an uber and would have been out of the building within a few minutes... what a foul and classless way to treat customers. As someone who worked in the service industry for years, it drives me insane when nasty people choose this line of work. It's like they want to drive people away from their business on purpose. I went to see a band at this venue. The band was great. My problem with DROM is the forced 18% gratuity for ordering anything on a credit card. A tip is supposed to be optional and should be forced on a 4-item charge. I like to tip but I have never heard of a forced tip a single round of 4 drinks (2 shots and 2 mixed drinks). Venues need to stop this whole tipping annoyance. Charge a fee that allows you to pay your employees proper. If you need reference check England. The venue did have a cool atmosphere, but I cannot get past being forced a 18% tip at a BAR?! Needless to say I don't recommend going to this location that will attempt to extort money from you. read more

I attended a Taylor Swift event with friends that was advertised to last from 7-11pm. However, the security did not allow ticket holders in past 10pm and kicked everyone out of the venue at 10:30pm. The security guard was incredibly rude and kicked people out of the venue for simply asking questions about not allowing people in a full hour before the advertised end time. No where were these details presented or explained which ended up costing people their ticket money with no return option. When people were forced to leave a half hour early, the security staff was again rude and treated people like cattle. Good points included the DJ, bar staff, and bathroom cleanliness. I hope the group that puts on these events choose a different venue in the future. read more

I have come to DROM for Mingus. I used to frequent Jazz Standard to see various configurations of the Mingus ensemble. They are approved. His widow sometimes sat at the back, and I chatted with her once. The venue shut down during the pandemic though. I found out they had relocated. I'm not sure how many versions of the band perform here. They have Mingus Mondays. I came for the music. The food is acceptable. I recommend the sushi place next door. It shares the same address. I recommend DROM. They seem well run. I only visit for the one purpose. They have an eclectic lineup. read more

Came a few weeks ago for a concert. I'd shown up early hoping to get a good seat for the show and since it was dinner time, I figured I'd eat there since there is a $20 per person minimum at a table. I had the lamb burger which was great. I'd noticed there wasn't much for photos on here of food, and had meant to take one but forgot. Wasn't impressed with the drink menu so didn't get anything. This is our second time at this venue and we absolutely love it. We came here for a Holly Bowling show (what a unique and special talent). Seats are a little tight but when aren't you sitting on your neighbors thigh in a smallish music venue? We had the VIP section due to mobility issues and the view was great. The last time we sat in the regular seats and had no complaints either. Get there early for prime selection. This is the first time we ordered food- a little pricey but it's the city, so what do we really expect. I had the Mediterranean plate and holy shit balls- it was amazing. I asked for vegetables for the dip due to allergies and they were very accommodating. The grape leaves and eggplant were incredibly fresh and flavorful. The feta cheese was perfectly salted and smooth. Jonathon, our server, was so sweet, helpful and such a wonderful addition to our evening. Very personable and a great sense of humor - thank you!! Overall it's a small but cozy venue. We'll definitely be back for any music that piques our interest. read more

Went to see a Mingus jazz show to enjoy the night. Not attend a political conference or rally! The musician Conrad converted a musical show into a political event Yelling on stage "vote for Kemala vote for freedom. You must vote for freedom. The only way to go!! " When we approached concerning the inappropriateness of a political cry on the stage. He cursed my husband and I was told by the person selling items if you don't like it don't come back!!! I say. Let's learn to separate situations. Keep your ideology to yourself unless you are in a politically driven event. Screaming political ideology in front of as paying audience present for music is beyond unacceptable. Think twice before you decide to go there. A real shame. read more

if I could give 0 stars I would, I attended the 2000s party just this past March 1st 2025 and I was physically assaulted by another girl as I was leaving the bathroom. the bathroom is located right next to the door where the bouncer was standing so I do believe he saw everything that happened. After I defended myself from this girl who put her hands on my neck she ran to hide in the bathroom and the bouncer proceeded to throw my friends and I out of the club and we waited outside to see if he would throw out the girl who started the whole fight and he never did. Drom located at 85 Ave A is back in full swing. This venue is aware of the covid 19 situation and does everything in it's power to protect their workers and guests at all times. That said Drom is back with a wide variety of eclectic night's my favorites has to be the Industrial Goth event's ,which was preceded by a heavy client/guest base of Spanish music. It was great to get back to this venue with Hula the manager at the helm she really knows how to cater to all her guests and step into any situation that needs her assistance. From all the bartenders to the busboys to the security Drom always hires the finest staff.. I always feel warm and welcomed here each and every time I come here. Kudos to Hula and all her staff for maintaining a very positive vide and safe environment to everyone who wanders through their doors. read more

DROM is a fantastic venue for up-and-coming bands. There's a big bar space and a dining area, with the stage being its focal point. The vibe is amazing: super dark, artistic, goth/punk, sexy, surrounded by exposed brick and weird music. They also host all sorts of events like Phish-after-parties, fetish dress-up gatherings, Hanukkah parties, and earthquake benefits. Doesn't get more random than that. I'll be sure to check their calendar every once in a while for those niche events I can't find elsewhere. Time to figure out my sexual fetish!!! The food is overpriced. Drom is awesome if you love experiencing live music. They have a great selection of bands/artists that are showcased here. We visit more so when Secret Trio is playing so we have been here plenty of times and the sound quality is great. I don't expect service at these places to be the best because you're essentially there for the music. However, when we are looking to order, they have substantial options. Slightly overpriced, but that's how it is every where in NY. We tend to order small plates like hummus, eggplant salad, cheese cigara, the Brussel sprouts (don't know how it's made but they're so good, trust me) and an order of chicken skewers. These are great plates to pick on while you are viewing/listening to live music. The only compliant I have is that the bathrooms give off such a bad odor. It's not pleasant at all. read more

Good show but Very sketchy billing and payments. Receipt didn't add up correctly. They hid itemized receipt under two receipts. On itemized receipt it shows 20% gratuity included. You can't even see individual pricing, only the subtotal. What I'm trying to figure out is how they included 20% because the math ain't matching based on the total price. And it's just a bummer overall to try and experience awesome music then having to have your guard up against unethical practices by the venue read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE - AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! TLDR: I was physically assaulted by staff and forcibly kicked out FOR ASKING FOR TAP WATER. For context, I had already spent over $40 at the venue ($15 for the ticket, $5 for coat check, and over $20 for two drinks) when this happened. So naturally after dancing with my friends for 45 minutes, I went to the bar to get some water and rehydrate. The bartender pulled out a plastic bottle and said that'll be $6. And so I clarified that I was only looking for a cup of tap water, not bottled, to which the bartender said nope we don't do that. In my head I'm thinking "huh??" because businesses that sell liquor are required to serve tap water for free. But before I could get another word in, she had moved onto the next customer, so I moved onto the next bartender, who gave me the same answer. Confused and annoyed, I headed towards the bathroom to cup some sink water in my hands as a last resort, but before I could reach my friend in line, I was suddenly YANKED backwards BY A MAN WITH CHUNK OF MY HAIR IN HIS FIST. My friend, witnessing the whole thing, runs up and is like WTF did you just PULL HER HAIR??? Meanwhile the man just keeps screaming "YOU'RE DONE YOU'RE OUT OF HERE". Shocked and confused, I turn around to see two of the bartenders pointing at me and nodding to the man, and that's when I realized that the man assaulting me was a staff member. I looked at him with tears in my eyes and calmly said "wait I'm confused, what's going on, did you just pull my hair?". And I guess he like expected me to be super wasted and aggressive or something, because all the sudden he looked panicked and RAN OFF when he realized I wasn't fighting back. Next thing I knew, another staff member--a bouncer--was pulling my arm towards the door saying come on you need to leave now. Grateful that it was only my shoulder and not MY HAIR in someone's grip this time, I tried to plea with him to let me get my coat that was checked, to which he just ignored me and proceeded to throw me out. Once outside, I was like hey wait could I just talk to you human to human for a second, because I'm really confused about what just happened and why I'm getting kicked out because all I did was ask for water. He ignored me and slammed the door. Thankfully my friend helped get me my coat (it was 28° outside, I was in a dress) before we left. Tears streamed down my face unwittingly as I pulled away at the new clump of too-long hair strands that lingered behind, detached from scalp. It was all so degrading. I hate how so many people who work in nightlife get on these weird power trips where they think it's okay to baselessly assault women and face zero repercussions. I'm sure I'm not the first person he's done it to, seeing that I was not even making a scene or causing problems--I was just trying to be responsible and drink water. I hope Drom gets reported to and fined by the city for violating their liquor license, and I hope the staff member who assaulted me (I wish I knew his name or title) gets fired. But I doubt they will, considering how toxic the environment is there. Now, the DJ (not in-house staff) was great. That's what I came for in the first place. Such a shame. read more

We wanted to sit down for the show, which means a $20 minimum order. But it took half an hour before they even started working on our drinks, at which point the server explained they'd run out of one of the drinks we'd ordered, so we had to change it up. DROM has a new pat-down policy for events. They patted me down for weapons four times in total. I'm a Black man who was performing at the venue. The white man I entered with only got patted down once. Another white man didn't get pat down at all. I asked for a water bottle, and they refused to give me tap water and instead said that the option was to pay $5 for bottled water. Not providing your performers with water is incredibly poor practice. This place is horrible, perpetuating racism, and I won't be there again as a performer or an audience goer. read more

I amend my review, I've pretty much crossed this place off my list of places I'll walk into willingly. Multiple times I've decided not to come to something that sounded interesting because I found out it was being held in this venue. Drom and Lovecraft are two sides of an awkward coin. Why are the drinks so expensive? Why is the crowd so off putting? Why do things that sound cool just fall flat? You're very likely to get lectured by someone from Eastern Europe in a fedora or beret or some other pretentious hat about what REAL music is, while trying to pay $8 for a beer and wishing the ear splitting volume of the jazz band you came to see was loud enough to drown out his incessant chatter. The layout is weird. Long, event style tables are always set up in front of the stage. So it's a music venue of sorts, but dancing has to happen behind the tables, closer to the bar. People are always camped out on the stools there, it's often just one bartender working, getting a drink takes awhile. So if you're not able to get a seat at the tables or the bar, or god forbid you want to move your ass a little and dance, you end up in a hallway-like space sandwiched between the two that I swear forces you to inch you're way further away from the stage, towards the door. I've only ever stayed to see one show through to completion. While the Lovecraft crowd is benignly awkward, I'd say Drom's is more aggressively awkward, with the small seating area furthest from the stage, towards the big empty space sometimes used to sell merch, being the "hit on zone". If you must go to see something in particular, pregame beforehand and arrive with friends. None of this "I'll meet you there" nonsense or you'll be left to fend for yourself. read more

"Schtick a Pole in it Series" with songs by Lizzo Came here for my girlfriend's 40th birthday. The program was about 2 hours of several routines showcasing the flexibility and strength that goes into pole dancing (it was on the classier side) along with some pretty funny comedians to breakup the time including the host. This was a different experience and we had a good time all around. Their calendar is full with cool events. I'd definitely come back! *We paid for "vip" seating in advance to try and be seated together (the layout is tight and awkward so look carefully at the online seating chart). Came here with a group of friends for a Body and Pole dance showcase and we had such a great time! Tickets were $30 and we had to get there 30 mins early to get a seat at a table. They had a $20 spending minimum for each person but the drinks and food on their menu were priced pretty fairly. I ordered a paradise cocktail and fries and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked them. The fries came in a giant serving and were pretty good. Cut to the chase- it's a total rip off. I'm happy to pay top $$ for premium service and quality food/ drinks, but this ain't it. The bill for 2 carafes of sangria came to a mind blowing $88 including mandatory gratuity. That's totally ridiculous. It was cheap wine and ice with barely any fruit. Also had the chicken/rice/beans/plantains plate that "came with" our ticket costs for the show; in other words it was already prepaid for and not part of this $88 charge. Half of it was cold and when I asked for a vegetarian version the only thing that happened was that the protein, the chicken, was exchanged for salad. How that's an acceptable substitution idk. Anyway this took another 7 minutes even though I had ordered the veggie version in the first place. Meanwhile my bf's plate got cold. Bottom line- I'd rather spend my $$ at the Blue Note where the food is actually pretty good. read more

Well, I was physically assaulted (actually knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched while on the floor of the venue) by the bouncer (A large bald dark skinned man) a few days ago and the manager approved of his behavior and told me "it's not a big deal, you have to leave" at closing time. I'm one of the most laid back people you will ever meet, there was absolutely NO reason to act this way and to put his hands on me. There were witnesses and people familiar with this particular bouncers behavior letting me know that he's known for this type of thing. This information has me appalled that he is still employed and doing whatever he wants within the location. He was seen earlier in the night screaming in someone's face instigating a fight and being very hostile. I was not the only one to notice this scene either. I'm taking action right now and hope that nobody has to go through this like I did. That bouncer should have been protecting patrons, not attacking them for telling him to calm down and relax because he was being very rude, aggressive and condescending to everyone. In the same turn, the manager should be correcting this situation and taking action instead of brushing it off, condoning such behavior and downplaying such a serious event. This is NOT how you conduct yourself, ESPECIALLY at the workplace! This place has no ethics or morals! It's sad because the bartenders were actually very nice that night and I appreciated them, but after this incident it's hard to give them anything higher than the lowest rating as a whole. If they fire (and take away the license of) the bouncer and get rid of management that thinks this is acceptable behavior of their employees, then maybe they can redeem themselves. I will not accept this behavior! I will not accept management that condones this behavior! I will not allow this incident to be shrugged off! read more

I came here for 80s dance party, and the music was great. Different from some big crowded nightclubs, this venue has a quite relaxed vibe so everyone can just dance freely. It doesn't have the snobbiness of some of the trendier clubs in town. read more
