As a lesbian bar, call it what u will, i don't understand serving and paying more attention to any men that may walk in but my past two visits it seems like unless your a man or white the bartenders arent really interested in serving you. Our visit to cubbyhole was wholeheartedly satisfying- while I can echo some of the criticisms other folks have had of the place (overcrowded on the weekend and why are there dudes working the bar?) I can't remember the last time I was somewhere with such great feminine energy. Also, the space is fantastic- the decor is a lot of fun and the non-stop slumber party jams were right up my alley. If I ever return to NYC I'd aim for their happy hour as opposed to the packed evening vibe. This was my first time at the bar and I want to stay pretty positive for the most part. The atmosphere was very welcoming. Everyone pretty much stays to themselves and you'll get the occasional flirty women here and there. The music is controlled by the guest which is a unique feature of the bar. It's always changing and surprisingly there was a good mixture of genres playing. The drinks were a little disappointing. They were a little light on the liquor but I guess that's bar tactic-makes you keep coming back. All in all I had no complaints, crowd was low-key, music is upbeat and it's a chill place. The overall place has a nice vibe and the drinks are fine, but after overhearing an older female bartender (ironically wears a "Good Girls Are Boring" t-shirt) be so nasty to the customer to both the left and right of us immediately killed our vibe. I've come to Cubby a few times in the past and most recently stood out as a stellar experience thanks to the bartender, Deb. It was the Monday after Pride, which happened to be my birthday, and my girlfriend and I popped in for a drink or two. Deb was the only one behind the bar, thanked us all for being there, and announced she was ordering us all pizza on the house! Free shots were then passed around to those who wanted one and the atmosphere was really kickin'. When my girlfriend had gone up to get our second round she mentioned to Deb that it was my birthday, unbeknownst to me, and before we dug in to the pies Deb got the entire bar to sing me happy birthday. There really is no atmosphere to speak of at Cubbyhole since music is picked using one of those jukebox app thingys and bartenders appear dissociative and uninterested. My girlfriend and I suffered through one well drink while the guy next to us loudly flirted with any straight passing woman within 10 feet of him and dominated the jukebox with what he perceived to be "cultured, underground tunes." FYI everyone knows who Chet Faker is, you're not special or cool, dude. Anyway, the bartender also seemed to have a disagreement with a queer black woman over some previous happenings there and refused to listen to her concerns while becoming defensive and childish. Not the way you should act in your place of business, especially toward the community your workplace is supposedly serving. The Cubby's been my favorite bar for as long as I can remember. I used to go a lot more, but I moved out of the neighborhood and got older so drinking isn't as big a deal for me now. Still, going back, always feels like coming home. It's a super friendly bar. You can rock out the Juke box, and drink for cheap. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are filled with super hot guys. All really friendly and not too cliquey. Like you can actually talk to them and not feel judged. Was there last Monday for Happy Hour. The new guy is great, he made us great cocktails on request and impressed me and my friends when we started talking about Rome and Cicero! Some bad reviews here about bouncers and what not. Most of them look like things the bar doesn't have a lot of control over. Bouncers can be unpredictable, but if you go into a space and are respectful and keep an ID on you and don't throw a hissy fit if you do get ID'd, I don't really see how you can have a bad time. The place is rinky-dinky tiny. So, it gets super crowded, super fast. I usually only stay for a few drinks because of this. Also, there can be long lines to get in, because it is so small. so be prepared to wait. read more

Unfortunately I don't think I can go here anymore, in spite of its many charms and in spite of it being one of the only queer bars for women in NYC. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, there is a massive a-hole of a bartender who *called me the c-word* when I simply asked for something I had left behind the bar earlier and was worried might have gotten stolen. It was absolutely ridiculous, and unwarranted, and frankly disgusting for a supposedly women and queer women-friendly establishment. I was visibly angry, but the other bartenders tried to diffuse the situation and tell me he was "a good guy" and "didn't mean it" and blah blah blah. I rarely ever leave a negative Yelp review, and I'm usually willing to shrug off bartenders who are stressed or disillusioned or snappy, but that was just out of line. I will say that the bouncer was friendly and the other bartender was a complete doll. But no, avoid this place unless you like misogynistic bartenders who are consistently given a pass on bad behavior. read more

Crazy, tiny, packed bar that's nonetheless a lot of kitschy, cheap fun. There's pretty much only beer on the menu, but bartenders are chill and friendly. The night I came, it was predominantly gay/lesbian and my boyfriend and I both had an interesting time rebuffing advances. I don't know why some reviews are calling this a dance bar because there is absolutely NO space for dancing, even if it weren't the weekend and super crowded. It's already a tiny place! After reading other reviews I am trying to understand why people are trying to make a point of saying it's a Lesbian bar?! If a "straight" bar were to make a point of saying "this is a straight bar" the media would be parked outside and lawsuits filed. Everyone's money is just as green. Its 2019 people live and let live. Since moving down the street (and for many months before), a good friend of mine (who is not a lesbian) has basically moved into the Cubby Hole. It's not really an exaggeration to say that pretty much any night of the week you can find him here, and thus over last year or so, I too have ended up here many a night to bask in the glow of the Cubby Hole's favorite gay boy and his posse of lesbians. But now I can understand why he feels so at home here. The crowd is friendly, the music is what you make of it (literally, it's a jukebox), and the drinks are cheap. I've gotten to know the staff and many of the regulars, and I've met some fantastic people. So Cubby gets a bump to 5 stars merely for never being anything more or less than you want it to be. Very lively, super-packed lesbian bar on a Sunday afternoon. It was extremely loud that I couldn't hear a word my friend was saying, so we left. Not for conversation or comfort---the bar was swarming with people, entering, exiting, moving around. It was also super COLD inside. I've never been to a bar where it was freezing and packed. I've been going to Cubby for over 20 years. I haven't been back until this past Thursday to catch up with a good friend since the pandemic. What place better to do that than Cubby and to make it an even better experience I was very happy to lots of familiar faces, I was especially happy to see Geeta. She is a sight for sore eyes. She's one of the strongest heartbeats there. Always greats you with the biggest smile and a real hug. Doesn't matter how busy it gets she's always smiling a makes us all smile and laugh our butts off.
