Your family's first time to mindlessly wander all around Hoboken on a Sunday afternoon (your kids absolutely sick of hearing their dad - me! - boring them with endless tales of "back in the day..." from when I was their age and up to no good in this wee little town) and now we were on the hunt for a place to eat. The Brass Rail won out (sorry, Jersey Mike's that we passed on a random side street!) and it was spectacular. Very classy - dark décor, cool lighting, interesting and engaging artwork. A great varied menu (the beer-and-wine list looked impressive, the food options were all over the place - in a good way). The waiter (an aspiring model/actor/bouncer, for sure!) was top-notch. The complimentary focaccia starter - delicious. When our meals arrived even my kids (teens are never impressed) said they were worthy of being photographed. (And they tasted even better.) One kid went with the pork chop and the way he devoured the Brussel sprout-bacon-apple side I think he forgot that he doesn't even like green vegetables. His brother dug the sliders but wasn't blown away (and if we're nitpicking... my clam-pasta dish could've used a wee bit less lemon juice, but maybe that's just me). Cool staff. Pricing wasn't as outrageous as we feared. I have returned to The Brass Rail several times since my mediocre experience two and a half years ago (see past review) and have left with a much better impression than on that occasion, which seemed to have been a one-off. On my most recent trip, we started with the Passion for Mezcal cocktail, which contained passion fruit liquor, pineapple, and mezcal. The sweet, tart, and smokey concoction has become one of my favorite drinks in town. We also shared the Pork Bao Buns, which came as a trio of soft, chewy clam-shell shaped dough pieces packed with slow-braised pork, hoisin sauce, and pickled vegetables. They were incredible and definitely something we would order again. For my main course, I went with an entree I recently discovered there and have enjoyed each time, the Brazilian Red Snapper. The tender, mild fish had been baked in parchment paper, along with scallions, cherry tomatoes, clams, and a garlic white wine broth. The clams were a bit small, but the seafood dish was otherwise great. Plus, it came with a small skillet of thin, crispy slices of fried fingerling potatoes that were fantastic! My companion was equally satisfied with his burger and fries. We finished the meal with the Chocolate Chocolate dessert, which had been described as "gooey chocolate cake, mousse, and cookie crumbles" with a note that it needed about 12 minutes to bake. However, when it arrived it was not the slice of cake we had pictured. Instead, it was a martini glass filled with crushed Oreos, chocolate mousse, and chocolate cake bites, all topped with whipped cream. So, it was more like a dirt pudding or trifle, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I also should mention that we love the staff here. I did not catch the name of our waitress this time, but she was excellent. We also adore Korrissa, Saraya, and Andres, who always know how to make their customers feel welcome! Now listen... when someone says "college town," you don't always picture: * Warm lighting * Cozy tables tucked close together * A genuinely cool ambiance * Impeccably clean space * Staff that actually seems happy you're there But that's exactly what we got. I ordered the short ribs over Yukon mash. My employee went with the clams off the ferry. Verdict? For American dining , it was really good. I actually would give the Brass Rail 4.5 stars. It was a very good experience! The service and food were both on point! We stopped here last minute on Cinco de Mayo and grabbed an outside table. Julie, our server was awesome. She was nice, friendly, informative, and very accommodating. We ordered bottled water and they had Saratoga which is my favorite water. My husband ordered a beer and unfortunately we found out they had run out of his choice, but Julie found a quick replacement. I then decided I wanted a skinny margarita.. it was good. I had two! We had the hummus and pita and veggies and it was delicious. We had gone to a mediterranean restaurant the week before and the hummus was better at the brass rail than the med. Restaurant. We both had the chicken sandwich and fries. The sandwich was good(mine was modified GF) and the fries were delicious. It was a little hot outside, but the people watching was fun. My fiancé and I came here last night to try the restaurant weekend. For $40 you get a choice from select wine/beer, an app or dessert and an entree. We ordered a Lagunitas, a Blue Moon a French onion soup, calamari and 2 garlic rubbed skirt steak. The French Onion soup was good - a little sweet. The calamari was ok but the Marina sauce was odd... it was essentially raw mashed tomato in oil. Once I squeezed the lemon into the sauce it was slightly better but still needed so much more flavor. The stars of the show were the garlic rubbed skirt steaks. They were delicious! We ordered them medium and they were more like medium rare but we didn't mind. The spinach that came with the steak was also delicious. We did another round of drinks: Montauk Wave Chaser and a Passion for Mezcal. The beer was really good. The cocktail was ok but not worth $16. A few years ago I would've rated The Brass Rail higher. It seems as if over time the quality of food has slipped. We went as a group of 6 and got seated upstairs immediately for Saturday brunch (we didnt have a reservation). We each ordered a different dish and we all agreed the flood was rather bland. I had the eggs benedict and the hollandaise was sorta off.. cant put my finger on it. Service was okay, nothing special. Our waiter was friendly and checked in often. The ambiance was great - its a beautiful old space with a gorgeous staircase. Plenty of outdoor dining when the weather warms up too. Me and my friend were looking for a spot to eat with outdoor seating and we came across The Brass Rail! We were immediately seated and greeted. For my drink I had the mojito. It wasn't the best but it did the job. My friend had a regular beer. For my meal I had the Grilled Chicken Club and it was DELICIOUS. The bread was amazing and all the ingredients built the perfect sandwich. I also really loved the fries. It was packed with flavor. My friend is vegan and he had to try the Vegan Flatbread. We haven't had much luck at other spots he'd try food at but he actually liked this meal and also liked the fries so much he had to get his own side. We were seated promptly and our server checked in with us right away. Clara was just delightful. We really enjoyed chatting with her! We started with mimosas, Bloody Mary and coffee. All were very delicious. Our starter was the tostadas. They were a huge hit. They could be a meal on their own. Met up with a good friend for dinner but to my surprise I just didn't enjoy my experience at this restaurant. After we were seated the host came over to take a drink order which came out fairly quickly. Soon after our server came to take our dinner order but we were not given menus and after letting him know, he then brought over the QR code menu. For starters we ordered the fried calamari which you can see from the serving size was quite small to share amongst our group of 3. We were never told that the portions were not sharable. The restaurant was fairly empty but the food took quite a while to come out and when it did was not very flavorful or hot. Truly disappointed. I ordered the short ribs with the yucca mash and carrots. Although the beef was super tender and buttery it lacked taste and the carrots were over cooked! We then ordered dessert which was a hit until then server who was either over worked or nervous mistakenly spilled water on our table into my dessert and over my friends feet. He served and made drinks which I could understand why he was also bartending and cleaning tables. Decor of the restaurant for the most part was dark and looked very plain. I don't know if I would go back especially not on a weekend when. I would anticipate it being busy, we probably wouldn't be server timely. They need more staff!! We are from LA, and we came here on new years ever for dinner, randomly just walking by on the street. The way it's decorated outside enticed us and it's just as nice on the inside! Love that there's a second floor, too. Everything we ordered was delicious! My husband ordered the rib eye, amazing, and they were nice enough to replace the eggplant in my risotto with beef. They were very accommodating and they kept their normal menu so you weren't forced into paying an expensive prefix with limited items: thank you! The upstairs of the restaurant is bigger than you'd think and is nice. The service was really friendly and accommodating despite how busy it was. The food was pretty good. A ribeye was ordered that was burnt (although to be fair it was ordered well done). However the fingerling potatoes which are cut in to small discs were great (not sure why they don't have sides on their menu). The arugula artichoke salad was excellent , the lemon vinaigrette was very good and the salad was chopped and big. The cauliflower rice was a hefty portion and pretty good: it would be nice if they offered a tofu protein option. They have vegan options if that's important to you. read more

I've been here a few times, but usually only for drinks outside or at the bar downstairs. But for the first time this past weekend, we stopped here for brunch, so happy we did! Our party of 8 had a big comfortable table upstairs in their really beautiful dining room. They have a fantastic brunch special - an appetizer, an entree and a drink for $26. Any additional brunch cocktail you get after your initial one is only an extra $2-$3, compared to the usual ~$8. I got the Kale and Pumpkin Salad, the Eggs Benedict and a Bloody Mary. I left very full. Okay, first the Bloody Mary - actually one of my favorites I've had in awhile, and I loveeee bloody Marys. It was premixed, so when someone from our table asked to make their with a bit less tabasco, they couldn't. The pumpkin and kale salad was tasty (but they didn't have kale so replaced it with arugula). Zero complaints, it was a delicious salad with pumpkin seeds, coconut shavings and a tasty vinaigrette. The eggs benedict wasn't my favorite. It came on mini bagels instead of English Muffins, and I didn't think that it complimented it very well. The bread was a bit hard and chewy. It came with home fries and a little salad on the side. It was still a tasty dish, but not something I'd get again. I'd definitely recommend stopping in for their brunch special! Stopped by brass rail on a Tuesday night after work to try their lobster roll and grab a drink. I liked the open air concept of the restaurant when they open up all the street facing doors. It sort of feels like a mix of indoor and outdoor dining. I ordered the margarita which was delicious but small. We were also told that happy hour was at the bar only and I believe only applied to house wines and beers on tap. As for the lobster roll, it was a hot butter style roll with bacon and a few shreds of lettuce (why?). As a self proclaimed lobster roll connoisseur... this roll just didn't cut it. This roll had about 3.5 pieces of lobster on it which tasted good, but was just not enough with all that bread! I also did not care for the 10 pieces of shredded lettuce. I've been to the Brass Rail close to about 50 times now for food and drink. Everything I have had here has never disappointed. I've tried everything on the menu at least once and can't say one thing has been bad. The drinks are very good as well. The bartenders have even made me speciality drinks if they don't serve the exact drink I want. That is great customer service. The atmosphere is very nice as well. The upstairs offers a more quiet dining area while the downstairs is more of an upscale bar. Would recommend for a couple cocktails, or a nice lunch/dinner. On weekends they even do brunch which I absolutely enjoyed. read more

She was kind enough to let me know that they prepared it with chicken stock, which is a no for me. The pasta was good, but I felt like it was missing something. For dessert I had the Nutella creme brûlée. It was pretty tasty, though I didn't have the biscotti since I was avoiding my chipped molar. (oops!) I went to The Brass Rail for lunch and ordered three small dishes as part of the BR Trio (3 small dishes for $15): Truffle Honey and Brie Grilled Cheese, Korean BBQ Short Rib Slider, and Grilled Octopus. These portion sizes were puny- like 2 bites per item. The grilled cheese was average. The bun on the slider was too crunchy and the meat was a bit dry. The octopus was too salty. The service speed was a bit slow. That being said, our waitress was nice. The place is nicely decorated in an American bar/restaurant style. Overall, I was not that impressed by the food at The Brass Rail. It was passable, but I will probably try a different place in Hoboken next time. read more

I had the lobster mac and cheese for dinner and all of the flavor and cheese just sat on top of the mac. There wasn't much flavor in the rest of the dish. As for brunch, they offer a pre fixe menu on Saturday and Sunday where you can order 2 courses and 1 drink for $27. I had steak and fried eggs. Steak was a bit over cooked -- I ordered medium -- but the eggs were good! The sangria was flavorless and watered down. Honestly both meals were way too expensive for what you get which is always disappointing. The atmosphere is a typical pub feel and the staff is super friendly.
