Came here on a Wednesday night around 8pm after attending an event nearby. It's a cute little quirky Japanese bar and it was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night. My friend and I were offered to sit at one of their high top table or the bar. The seating at those high top tables did not look comfortable so we opted for the bar as they have bar stools that we can sit on. We ordered their gyudon, tots and maitake skewers. The gyudon was decent. The beef had a good balance of sweet, salty and umami flavor. The beef was tender and the egg yolk added a touch of creaminess when mixed together. The tots were perfectly fried, crunchy and nicely seasoned. The maitake skewers however, came a little cold and undercooked. The sauce was also a little salty and overpowering. Overall, it is a good options for an after dinner drink and snack in the area. The only thing is the restaurant has a DJ and music was very loud. This visit is from July of this year. NBetween is a cozy, eclectic, steampunk-esque bar next to/behind the Peruvian/Japanese hand roll restaurant within Chelsea Market. We came here at the end of the night because most of Chelsea Market restaurants were closed, and I'm so glad we did. The food was delicious, the drinks were great, and the vibe was calm but fun. Ambiance: It gave Blade Runner vibes, with low lighting/neon lights, old Japanese electronics, and retro knickknacks artfully displayed along the walls. The dinnerware is vintage (I believe) china from the early 1900s! Some of the plates are Noritake china, which ties into the Japanese theme. Food: We ordered the Addictive Cabbage, Salmon-don, Chicken Thigh Skewers, and Steak Skewers. The chicken and steak were tender, perfectly cooked, and well balanced despite their minimal seasoning. The Addictive Cabbage was exactly that - a mound of cabbage tossed in an incredibly addictive, deeply umami seasoning. We couldn't stop shoveling it into our mouths. I've never tasted anything like it before. Drinks: We had a Sapporo and the Quiet Love. Quiet Love is one of their non-alcoholic offerings. I tend to prefer creative drinks that aren't overly sweet, and this one was perfect. It tasted like what I imagine a sencha fruit would taste like, with a floral sakura aftertaste. Service: We had a bit of trouble flagging down our waitress, but that feels pretty typical for a bar. Bar food is usually sub-par for me, but I think about this meal often. We were in Chelsea Market and decided to get drinks; we were seated immediately although the host told us it was pretty rare to have a walk-in opening for 5 (Saturday around 6pm). The bar is very dim but has a nice retro theme. The menu bar code is on a mini floppy disc thing (idk what it's called I was born in 2001) and the music is chill. The drinks were very strong (which I'm into) and I they felt very creative. I also like how much the presentation differed from drink to drink. My favorite drink of the ones we tried was the Security Blanket, which came in a really cool cup that I wanted to keep. Typical cocktail prices. I have been to this bar many times and had an amazing experience until today. I brought some friends in that were visiting NYC and opening a new restaurant, wanting to experience the city. A bartne named Kevin was working and was incredibly unfriendly and rude to us from the start, making it a point in every way to feel unwelcome, while doing shots with guests sitting next to us at the bar.
