I've been taking my bikes to the Daily Rider for years...flat tires, yearly servicing, you name it. I always appreciated that they were local and knowledgeable...but when my year-old Cannondale was stolen recently, they couldn't have been nicer and facilitated the delivery and assembly of my new bike and got me back to MY daily rider quickly and affordably. I have several bikes that from time to time need professional attention. I can change a tire, wrap bar tape even tweak the shifting. I also know enough that when I'm in over my head I need to stop and that's where the Daily Rider shines. This past summer and fall two of my steeds needed tlc beyond my comfort level. I made arrangements to have service done. Not only was it done correctly, but it was done beyond what was needed in my mind, but was needed in fact. For this I am grateful and impressed. Tl;dr: My neighbor warned me that the owner used to be a cop and still behaves like it. Rude & dismissive, not interested in even listening to the service you're requesting, nor the parameters of your bike and components. If he weren't the owner, I'd assume he was being paid on commission for each customer that left thinking "huh, that guy was totally unhelpful and patronizing." I can't fault a shop for refusing to do work that they deem unsafe, but that's not what this review is about. Full review: I took my Priority converted e-bike in for a few services (fork replacement, brake tune-up, tube replacement). Spoke to a nice guy on the phone the previous week, explained my situation, was told to bring the bike by for service. Dropped off the replacement components with an equally friendly gentleman at the front desk, then ran back to my car for the bike itself. By the time I returned, the owner was standing at the door, ready to deliver his monologue. The door had barely closed, in fact, when I was told they weren't going to work on it because replacing the fork would mess with the geometry of the bike (others online with *my exact model* have reported this to be a non-issue?), that the fork was incompatible because Priority didn't make suspension forks (what does this even mean??) that it wouldn't fit the axle (I mean, it DOES fit and I knew this because I already fit it myself???), that they wouldn't file down the fork (I wasn't even asking them to[!]????), and that RadPower is currently being sued for "this exact thing" (turns out RadPower is *actually* being sued because of their quick release forks messing with brake rotors, not because of the fork itself?????). After he got done with his soliloquy (felt like I needed a shave after waiting that long for it to end), I realized he'd made up his mind and that was going to be that. I genuinely didn't understand the issue with what I was trying to do, and mentioned I had a beefy torque arm, which only prompted an incredulous response to the extent of "you're going to put a torque arm on a suspension fork?!?". He further elaborated with some really helpful insights, like saying "that's very dangerous, don't do that" before walking off, shaking his head and scoffing as he looked away from me muttering "don't ever put a torque arm on a suspension fork... ... ..." and disappearing into the back office area as his voice trialed off. It's really not difficult (!) to avoid being curt and patronizing with people. If the owner had been interested in listening or explained... really... anything, I'd not be writing this review, but that wasn't the case. You ever read reviews of a place where others suggest owners/staff are rude and think "how bad can they be?", until you go and have the "ohhhhhhhhh yeah, ok, I get it now" realization? That's this place. I highly recommend reading the other reviews that report similar things (or, you may just luck out and not have to deal with the owner at all!). I still have no idea *why* what I was trying to do was so dangerous, but I DID learn something today: the owner is a rude blockhead. Take your bike elsewhere. read more

I'm a Deaf frequent customer since 2016 and this shop is amazingly patient/flexible in communicating with my friends and me, including through frequent texting and typing. The employees are beyond honest and helpful about what they can do and can't do - even if they can't do something I'm looking for, they know how to find it. This business is also involved in advocacy for walkability and bike-ability in the neighborhood, something I appreciate deeply. They put their heart into their work. Out of the five years I've been going here, they only made a (very small) mistake once with my partner's bike; they immediately fixed it for free AND threw in a free improvement. I was walking down H St the other day and saw a sign posted on The Daily Rider door with very detailed instructions on how to make an appointment and the first available. All I wanted done was an inner tube on my back tire/wheel. So I called down yesterday around 2:30pm and the young man said if you can get here in 30 minutes I can take you. He also said text me your name and the issue and I'll send you the information you need. He did that right away. So i jumped on my bike and got within 15-20 minutes of my phone call. Once there, I used the lock they provided and texted the number to let them know it was ready. With 15 minutes my bike was done I'm so happy with the whole appointment, customer service and quality of the work! Daily Rider has given me fast and good service, including today - and sometimes for small jobs not even taking pay. I've had my bike tuned up there yearly for the past 3 years. My bike is not a fancy job but they have never made me feel it was too crummy or simple for them, or that I should trade up (as some other shops have). They seem to be over the covid situation that made appointments necessary or not so easy to get. read more

The pluses are that the staff is always friendly, and that the owner is very involved in advocating for bike infrastructure. Their new location is stylish. But I have not been impressed with their mechanical work- first off it is overpriced compared to similar stores; secondly, on more than one occasion I had to have another store fix the Daily Rider's mechanical work; and finally, once they told me I had to buy a whole new wheel, when really all I needed was a part that another store charged me less than $5 for- 2 years later the wheel still works brilliantly. They're the closest location to me, so I keep giving them a try, and keep being underwhelmed. read more

Dropped off my bike for a quick tube change this week. They seem very busy and were too busy to do it last week, which was disappointing. But, calling in this week and coordinating with them was very easy and smooth. It was $25 to change out the tube and I just dropped off the bike on a rack out front with a lock they provided and texted me the combination for. They then texted me to let me know the bike was ready, I called in to give them my credit card info, and they again locked the bike out front for me to pick up. Overall, it was a breeze and they even gave me some thoughts on additional maintenance I should consider for my bike in the near future. read more

I've been a customer since 2014, when I bought my Breezer Uptown. I've always enjoyed interacting with the owner on my multiple stops into the shop for tune-ups, repairs, and when I see him around the neighborhood. I eagerly headed over there the first day they were open in their new location (a block and a half from my house) to welcome them to their new spot. Today I took my wife's bike in for a tune-up; the bike has mostly sat unused outside or in our basement for the last 2 years, but we anticipate using it more frequently in the coming weeks. When I told one of the associates (not the owner) that I'd like to drop the bike off for a tune-up, he looked at me and asked, "why? what's wrong with it?" Not knowing much about bikes, I (apparently foolishly) said there wasn't a problem per se or one that I knew of, but that it had been sitting unused for 2 years and I'd like it tuned up before it is used again regularly. The associate seemed shocked that I'd utter something so ridiculous and replied that he did not understand why I wanted to do this. I noted that I'd just brought my other (more frequently used) bike into the shop for the $125 tune-up that's advertised on their site and asked if I was wrong to assume that this was a service that could be rendered to this other bike. The associate said, "yeah, we do tune-ups. I just don't know why you would want to spend $125 when nothing is wrong." Frustrated with the apparent lack of desire on the associate's part to move the interaction towards a "win-win" outcome, I answered that I "didn't know if anything was wrong or not," adding that I thought the point of the tune-up was to figure out if anything was wrong and needed to be repaired. I added that if I was wrong about that, then I'd gladly leave. The associate sighed, reluctantly took the bike into the back, gave it a once over, and put some air in the tires. As I waited, another associate explained to me that bikes typically don't any servicing if they've been sitting unused. I said that that made perfect sense, thanked him for the clarification, retrieved the bike, and left. I'll continue using this shop, not only because it's conveniently located and because I support local businesses, but because I've always had positive experiences here before and am going to assume this was a "one off" experience. But I would like to know why a layman's explanation was not possible right at the top of the conversation. A simple "how often is the bike used" or "when was it last serviced" might have helped move the conversation forward productively. It might have even helped reveal the owner's bicycle IQ (or lack thereof), in order to then tailor the experience appropriately. Instead, the customer was made to feel like an idiot first before getting down to business. Too bad. I've provided a 2-star rating because, per the rating's description, "I've experienced better." read more

I'm stunned! What a great experience. I brought my bike in for a general tune-up, and for starters, everyone was super-nice. They didn't "talk shop" with me, but went over my bike and explained what they'd need to do during the tune. I got the bike back the other day (and even talked with the owner for a bit about the neighborhood) and it was in prime condition. I even had them change out my grips (they were happy to recommend something for me; and they nailed it). Overall, I'm really happy with the shop and intend to return to the Daily Rider for all of my maintenance and gear needs. read more

After using bikeshare for the past couple of years I decided to invest in a day to day bicycle for city riding. The Daily Rider is in my neighborhood and right away when I walked in they were super friendly and helpful. I told them I was just an average rider doing a commute of about 30 mins in the city and they quickly suggested a couple of well priced options. I did a test ride on a bike and then decided it was for me. They order the Breezer 7 speed and it came about a week later and said it was ready for pick up. This is truly a neighborhood spot, with good solid bike shop employees that aren't trying to upsell you but just want you to find the right bike for your price range and lifestyle. Adding to my previous reviews. The staff here is always phenomenally helpful. My latest episode entailed getting a new rack for my bike. I wisely paid the $15.00 installation fee. We tried one rack and had it almost all the way on when we discovered that the bolts wouldn't work on my always hard to fit anything to bike. Whipped off that rack and tried another with adapters, lots of adjustments and dismantling. Perfection! They earned their $15.00. All this started withing 20 minutes of their closing time and dragged out for almost an hour. No complaints or "come back tomorrow to pick up your bike." They stuck through it and finished the job. As I've said before, they lean more towards commuters vs mountain/racing bikes. Fills a much needed niche in DC. However the staff seals the deal. My ideal bike mechanic is transparent about the issues my bike has and clear what she will do to address them. Transparency evinces strength and quality. I have been to The Daily Rider once, and felt like the gentleman that helped me only wanted to keep me in the dark. My bike is an old one, and in a state of disrepair. I walked into the shop and told the man at the desk that I just wanted them to assess it so I could see what I might want to have done. The mechanic put it up on the stand and told me that he would fix my brakes for $25 (this consisted, he said, of putting lube on them) and fix the line that ran from my steering wheel to my shifter for another $25. When I started to ask about what the gear shifter work would actually look like, he told me he wasn't going to tell me how to do it, that that was how he made his money. I said I would wait on both pieces of work, and maybe do the brakes myself, and he grumpily took the bike back off the stand. It seemed like he was afraid that I would do the work on my own. My ideal bike mechanic isn't scared of such things because she is confident that she can do a better job than I can, because she knows that I pay for the quality of her hand, because she is interested in making customers, not transactions. I learned about The Daily Rider from a close neighbor/friend. His bike had been stolen, and a Daily Rider employee spotted someone on his bike! They alerted my friend- long story short, in a city where bikes are constantly being stolen, and rarely retrieved, his custom-bike was found, the culprit arrested, and my pal got his bike back! Since then, I have been to The Daily Rider twice for repair work; Each time they have been friendly, quick, and done an excellent job...How do I know? Because I am handy myself and now good work when I see it. And the "proof is in the pudding"; My bike has been working great, as has my wife's, ever since they worked on it. Now that they are one of the only (and no, those poor, inexperienced and overworked souls at REI aren't even in the same ballpark, let alone game), they are still hustling like their business depended on it. Thrilled to see another bike shop carrying lots of commuter and cargo cycles. Daily Rider has an awesome logo and a nice selection of surprisingly reasonable bikes. (Internal gears for $600 or less sometimes?!) The Bobbin bikes are pretty little things. I like the Daily Rider style with Yakkay helmets, Bird skirt garters and rack-steady biking purses. I'm now sporting the skirt garter and feeling much more confident with flowy garb on the commute. As soon as I can have a pet, I'll be back for the Nantucket Basket that will fit a pooch safely. Love to see H St. continuing to grow with great businesses, and this place fits right in with the vibe of the neighborhood. They have a unique selection of stylish bikes and accessories. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful. An example: A few months back, I was a victim of the streetcar tracks on H St NE. Didn't change lanes sharply enough, lost control of my bike, and ended up on the pavement. No serious injuries, thankfully, but a bit shaken and scraped. Knowing this bike shop was nearby, I stopped in, and they kindly let me use the staff washroom to clean up and gave me a few band-aids for my cuts. So grateful they were there for me. I've also stopped in a few times for bike accessories, and the staff has been great at helping me weight the pros and cons of different options when looking at something like locks. I had a great experience here! Sure, i waited until another impending "polar vortex" to bring my bike in for some much needed repairs on the brakes- and unfortuantely, tinker as i may, it was an internal issue and needed help. The lads were great- friendly, validating that it was beyond basic maintenance issue (yay!), discussed the problems i may have in the future and options and prices if the brake issue re-emerges... and then, as if a shining halo, i found a VEGAN BROOKS SADDL! my heart leapt! I've always wanted a brooks saddle, but they are always leather... oh happiness! anyway, the lads were lovely and i'm as happy as can be with my new saddle- VEGAN! yay! read more

I bought a bike here on Sunday and thought that the sales person JD was really good. There wasn't a huge selection, but I found a bike that was my size, XS (which has been hard to find at other shops) and it was under budget and had a good ride. What made me think this shop is great, is the service I received this morning. On my commute into work this morning I had an issue come up with the bike. I called the shop and they sent Al over to my office to repair the bike. It was a super easy adjustment and it was fixed. I thought that they would tell me to bring the bike in, but the fact that they came to me was above and beyond. read more

I agree with other reviews here. These guys are hit or miss. I've occasionally brought my bikes (yes, bikes plural...I am a lifelong experienced cyclist) in for repair. Their customer service is not stellar. The last time I was in there they had at least 2 customers walk in and out without being helped while the staff stays in the back and does repairs. Crazy idea: hire someone to help people on the sales floor. The owner is nice enough and I'm glad to see them expand their business and move into a bigger location on H St, but they need to step it up to compete. read more
