In a nutshell I wont be going back to this place , I paid a-lot of money for a tune up and to have my bicycle gears touched up and for an overall tune up ( Bicycle was supposed to be ready to ride upon pick up) I waited several weeks for them to do nothin but change the tire tubes ( If that even happened) I go to ride the bicycle to work and I get 10 mins on the road I realize the tires are not even pumped ( Just barely enough to ride ) & Then on top of that my gears are clicking and clacking and clicking like I have NEVER HEARD BEFORE .COMPLETELY NEW NOISE N BIKE JERKS FROM GEAR TO GEAR UP N DOWN CLICKING N CLACKING TRYING TO GET UP Hills . read more

I bought my bike here and I'm living it. I can't wait till I get to take a basic maintenance course from them. If I had the budget I would buy another one. At what point did "bicycling communities" become fodder for every huckster, con-artist and sleaze-master to exploit? Gearing up at it's Eckington location took in donations hand over fist, they turned a profit on donated bicycles and parts and provided a great resource in spare parts to the local home fixers without breaking a sweat. They get a special deal from the city on the space, they're not paying taxes and they're not paying market rates if anything at all for labor. Our tax dollars at work, I have no objections however.... At their new location its a different arrangement. I was able to dig a few of the parts I needed, some adjustments required, rust and chipped paint is acceptable, no warrantees, no promises. At the checkout, the markup was over the top. Charging as-new retail prices plus for self serve salvage and they acted like they were doing me favors. Management showed up to justify themselves. "we're a nonprofit" supporting the biking community and youth programs blah, blah blah. I already gave at the office. Gearing up is taking in a healthy profit and reciprocating to the DC bicycling community by price gouging and tired old money-grubbing. An abuse of public trust, a feckless deception. Like bikes for the world, Gearing up is making profits, not cooperative, not serving the local biking community but hiding behind a phony claim, snatching what they can get away with and giving nothing back. Gearing up should have their nonprofit status revoked, pay rent and taxes and then they can charge as much as they want for their salvage and see how the market responds. I had no problem finding my parts at a reasonable price at any one of the four other bike cooperatives in the area that are actually "cooperative". Gearing up is not worth the trip, not worth the hassle, not worth the attitude and dishonesty and not worth the time of day; Of no value to the DC biking community whatsoever. read more

Bought a used Trek 4300SL off of CL, had it tuned and cleaned here plus installed a stand. Have enjoyed it regularly for two months now, no issues aside from a loose bolt for the stand. My wheel may have needed truing, too. My impression is that these guys are passionate about their bikes and will be about yours as well. You'll see that some of the staff actually compete, so it's nice to see they can get down with the pros and do the work as well. The honesty and exuberance from both staff and customers makes for a lively shop and subsequently for a more relaxed experience compared to visiting most established bike retailers in the greater DMV area. Proteus in CP may be an exception; Rockville Bike Hub also deserves a mention here, though they're just starting up. But, a nonprofit training kids with vital skills for the workplace while offering good, honest service at a very fair price. What else? read more

This is a great shop, easy to get to right off the Metropolitan Branch Trail. Took my bike there on a warm February day to get a spring tune up since it was either that or think about climate change. Staff was friendly when I entered, and they took a closer look at my bike of many years to recommend a new chain which was probably badly needed. Was able to get a tune up and that for $55. Dropped it off on a Friday and they had it ready Sunday, so pretty quick turnaround. I'll definitely be taking my bike back here if and when it needs it. read more

First review to you !! It 's getting too ridiculous now . I just spent the whole f***ing hour during midnight to fix up the sh** legacy gearin up guys left me, and it didnt work! Meaning i had to go back for the 3rd time to make them correct the problems. and this the 2nd time it suddenly got wired because the first guy got my front brake too tight and had continuous fiction with the tire- front wheel simply couldnot move- i cant even push it. 2nd time, someone helped loosen it up and now it went back to unbikable mode. Only 4 days since i picked up this bike from them 4 days ago for the first time repaire. Thanks to you gearinup folks, my life has just become absolutely miserable and a nightmare to me! I was shocked by how unprofessional and irresponsible someone there can be. Since all the reviews are extremely good, I really had difficulties figuring out why the service I got was so messed up. There are only 2 explanations, you pick: Either you are racist. I am an Asian small girl crying for help in the first place. and you guys dont give it a fxxx coz I am a foreigner? OR simply dont know your sh**! bad skills - but wait, tight brake wit fiction with tire is a pretty simple and noticeable one. you didn't run a simple check? also very dishonest. i was told I need to replace a new cable. and there is no new cable. Why didnt I take a test after getting it back? Coz i trusted you too easily, I should never have gone to you! This place is fantastic! I met Katie and Sterling this past Summer and based on my few minutes of interaction, I could tell their energy and outgoing personalities are going to make this organization grow and thrive in NE. I'm a volunteer at velocity bicycle cooperative in alexandria but I've been to their shop several times since it opened up in November. This isn't your Fathers bicycle shop. While they still provide traditional services such as bicycle tune ups and sell parts, they also sell used parts, provide do it yourself work, all the tools needed, and volunteer and staff assistance regardless of how new you are to bicycle mechanics, all for just $15 an hour. It's a great way to save a lot of money while learning an important skill. Gearin Up Bicycles also has multiple youth programs for at risk teens. Gearin Up Bicycles is about a quarter mile north of the intersection of New York and Florida, and is also about 100 feet off the Metro Branch Trail. Look for the Gearin Up Bikes Sandwhich board. Support your local bicycle coop! They're great people and Gearin Up Bicycles is going to make a tremendous impact on the community. read more

After stumbling upon this place down the bike path, I was just waiting for something to go wrong with my bike to check out their services. Well after getting a flat front tire, I smiled and said, "it's finally time." Gearin' Up Bicycles does not only provide stellar bike repair services at a fraction of what a lot of the other bike shops offer in town, but are a vital spot in the community. Certain Thursdays of the month they have a neighborhood day when the kids in the neighborhood come and repair bikes but also as well as learn more about them. They are a chatty and energetic bunch that just make you smile, and I'm glad they are provided the opportunity to gain a valuable skill. I stopped by the shop to see if they could replace a gear cable. They were able to assist right away and had the cable replaced within 5-10 minutes. They asked me to give it a test ride out front to see if it was to my satisfaction, which it was. The cost was inexpensive and I wouldn't hesitate to use the shop in the future. The shop is a bit of a "dump", (though organized nicely) and there wasn't a/c in the main entry area (though I think the repair area in the rear had a/c), but otherwise, it fit the need! read more

Awesome place! Kudos to everyone who has worked on, worked in, and helped fund this place. Great service (kudos to Pedro and others). The only bike shop I've encountered in DC that practices the Golden Rule -- treat others as you'd like to be treated. They don't try to sell you expensive parts, expensive repairs, or even more expensive repair packages, let alone new bikes -- unlike e.g. City Bikes or BicycleSpace. They don't sniff their noses at you just because you don't have the latest and most expensive bicycle. In my most recent visit, my rear wheel had a wiggle. The guy at City Bikes told me the axle was cracked, wasn't worth fixing, and the bike (a vintage Schwinn Super LeTour, 2nd owner) probably wasn't even worth getting a new wheel for. Maybe he wanted the chrome moly steel alloy frame for himself? ;-) To fix it, their estimates (and those of BicycleSpace) were $200 and up (not including the cost of a new wheel, which they priced at more than $75). So I limped it over to Gearin' Up. They confirmed the cracked axle, at first offered me a new wheel for ~$39, but then called back to say they'd found a used axle in good condition they could use if I wanted, so I could keep my original wheel. They noticed the chain was loose, so offered to replace that (at a great price). The total cost was less than one-fourth (75% less) what the NW bike shops were quoting, and they finished two days earlier than they'd thought. Well worth the ride to the NE, imho! Brought my bike in today to replace tubes on both tires. Price was very reasonable - $30 total. They also zipped tied up my brake and gear lines, which had kept on getting caught on the front fender for no charge. Service was excellent and quick!
