When I broke my Gates Carbon Belt Drive on my Priority Current, I couldn't find someone to help me install a new one on my ebike. I ended up learning how to remove my rear wheel and install a new belt. However I had trouble reattaching the cable onto the internal gear. When Kevin started Terrapin Bicycles, he helped me a great deal with my Priority Current and getting a new motor for it. Years later, I remember his generosity. I called up the shop and nearing closing time, Brie, the bike mechanic said to come in and he'll help out. In 15 minutes, he'll got my bike in top shape. It's so important to find "your guy". Terrapin Bicycles is incredible in their service, knowledge, and relationship with the community. Thank the bike gods for them. read more

Truly awesome shop and I'm so happy I was able to support them as they're still in their first year of business. I needed my tubeless tires re-mounted ASAP and they very kindly accommodated me. The shop is in a temporary location so of course it's a little crowded and not very fancy (right now) but none of that matters honestly. What you want in a bike shop are people who care about you and your ride, and that's 100% the vibe I got. The mechanic and owner were so friendly and happy to give this out-of-towner advice about where to ride. If you're into gravel or cyclocross you also really want to check this place out. The owner rides gravel and the mechanic races cross, so you'll be in good company. It's not always so easy to find people who know their stuff when it comes to these types of rides or a shop who carries the gear you need. I was stoked to see they carry the Dynaplug tubeless repair kit that I've been meaning to be. It was nice to be able to pick one up and support a local bike shop instead of ordering online. Ultimately, this is definitely a local bike shop that you want to support and keep around. I can easily see that they care about their customers and are looking to build lasting relationships. read more

walked in without an appointment to see if they could take a look at my bike and tires and give some recommendations. The guys were super nice and I caught them at a great time. I expected to pay for a tuneup plus whatever tire expenses. They took a look at my bike, and said they wouldn't do anything since it seemed to be in good shape. I appreciated the honesty. They made a few recommendations for tires and were totally transparent about cost. We talked about pros and cons and I chose some puncture resistant new tires. They were able to put them on while I waited. Lots of neat bikes to look at while I was waiting, and the owner stocks some local breweries beer and local coffee as well, so that was fun. Reasonable prices, excellent service, appreciated the honesty, and they really knew about bicycles, including my old classic one. read more

New bike shop in Bethesda is temporarily located on Norfolk Ave (on same block as Rock Bottom) while their new space is built out. I've talked several times to Kevin about a new bike and he is both knowledgeable and friendly. I haven't had my bikes serviced there yet, but will during the winter. And you get to support a new local small business with a team passionate about bikes. I have taken several bikes here for service over the last several months and each time they did a great job. Their accomplished mechanics adeptly addressed complicated problems that other bike shops had mangled. And they never try to upsell -- their prices are very fair, from simple flats to tune ups to internal gear hub repair (and for one of my challenges, they even got the manufacturer to send free parts). It's been a long time since I felt I could so completely trust a bike repair shop. And for anyone with an ElliptiGO - I won't take mine anywhere else for service. Hello I bought a ebike at this location and I thought it was the one, but very soon after, I realized it wasn't and decided to return it to continue my bike search journey. The owner was very understanding and gave me absolutely no pressure with my $4000+ return, even offering to swap out for a different. After a quick bike inspection to make sure I didn't drop it off a building he accepted the return. He only asked that I cover a small administrative fee that he himself incurred from my purchase because of his system. I was glad to take care of that, as he definitely took care of me during this entire process. I received top notch service and my needs were personally given the utmost attention. They are knowledgeable, professional, helpful, and efficient. I had the misfortune of having a tire go flat on my hybrid bike during an outing with friends. I stopped in at Terrapin Bicycles and, with the assistance of a delightful, good natured and helpful without being obsequious sales person, bought a new tube and decided it wise to buy a tire too as the one on the bike was over10 y old. So, the sales person helped me with what I needed and just as I left to do the tire and tube change in the street (a pain in the you know what), the sales person stopped me and offered me the store's nice bike work-stand, IN THE STORE (!) so I could easily, cleanly and quickly do the job. Who, in the DC area, does this?! I tells me a LOT about the owners o this bike store and what it tells me is that while they want, and need, to make money for their business, they want to make customers feel welcome and to actually HELP people in need. What a delightful experience! I am going back there FIRST when I need parts or even a bike. read more
