I have an electric frontloader - a Workcycles Kr8 - that I love almost as much as my children. I'm on the thing almost every day, to get to and back from work, run errands, and take my kids around to various activities. And because I often have at least one kid riding with me (the older one's too cool to be seen in his mommy's bike unless he's tired or it's raining), I get it serviced on a regular basis and don't hesitate to have it looked at any time I feel it's warranted (e.g., when I got it back after it was stolen 6 days prior; yes, super lucky). A while back, I took it to EB to get the brakes repaired. Over the next 5 weeks, they called me 4 different times to say it was ready for pick up, but it was immediately obvious each time - as soon as I laid my non-bike-mechanic hands on it - that it wasn't ready to ride (chain glider falling off, brake fluid leaking, steering jerking to one side, shifter installed backwards). Each time, it was a new, unrelated problem that they somehow didn't notice before, although the issue was clear to me before I even took the bike off the premises. They eventually replaced the brake pads and fixed one other issue, but also lost some of the original parts and used electrical tape to put the chainglider together, all without even telling me. After they'd had it for almost 6 weeks and charged me twice what they'd estimated, it was clear they'd never able to get it back to the condition it was in when I dropped it off. I realize it's not the easiest bike to work on and would have been fine with the cost if they hadn't screwed it up, but both the manufacturer and the bike shop that eventually fixed everything found their work to be subpar. When I questioned how I could feel assured that the bike is safe for me and my kids, they: * Acted as if they'd done me a favor by using electrical tape to put a part together without telling me, only to have it fall apart while I was riding; * Blamed the condition of the bike on my alleged failure to maintain it properly, even though their records will show that they'd serviced it on a regular basis, and the bike, except for the brake problem, rode perfectly before I dropped it off with them; and * Claimed that the bike, after a little over 2 years and 1000 miles, needed to be replaced, and oh look, they have lots of new bikes! Ugh, it was disgusting. I hadn't had anyone be so condescending and disrespectful in years. Neanderthals. . . P.S. I know how important it is to support local bike shops if we don't want to end up buying bikes off Amazon, and I really didn't want to write this review. That said, I'm apparently not the only woman who's experienced this type of nonsense at EB and just wanted to alert others who are considering doing business with them to be prepared. read more

Paul at ElectriCityBikes knows absolutely EVERYTHING about e-bikes, including cargo bikes. He advised me on what bike I should buy, and has gone above and beyond in addressing issues that have come up. He even worked an hour beyond the shop's official closing time to fully address a brake issue. I've never seen that level of dedication at any other bike shop. Everyone else I've interacted with has been helpful as well. I'd highly recommend this place. One recommendation I'd have is to order EARLY. Everyone is buying e-bikes right now, and lead times can be long. read more

I discovered I had a flat tire after a day of more street riding than usual. I assumed I wouldn't be able to get it fixed late on a Friday afternoon, so I was prepared to do my own tube change. Happily I was wrong! The young woman who was helping me asked the bike mechanic how long I would have to wait to have my flat fixed. The mechanic is my hero! He said he could have it ready for me in less than 5 minutes, and that's exactly what he did. The problem was a piece of glass. I was headed home with my repaired back tire ready to be reinstalled. I felt immediately welcomed by Avery who not only expertly fixed the flats and brakes on my Hyperscrambler 2 but also treated me with the utmost respect. While I waited, I talked and joked with Ray and some of the other staff who were about as friendly and accommodating as they come. The cost was completely fair and I was happy to pay it. I had bought accessories at City Bikes before but this the first time that I bought a bike. It was for my granddaughter and the sales person was very polite and helpful. It was tuned very quickly so she could take it home without a long wait. It is the third bike I buy for her and in the future will think of City Bikes first. read more

Have bought 2 Tern GSD bikes from ElectriCityBikes, Paul Yepez is very knowledgeable about everything Tern and if he doesn't know it he'll get the information you need. We've experienced service turn arounds of about 24 hours and Ive see them fix small issues on the spot. If I had to ding them it would be that you have to text as opposed to calling them on the phone but I'm 63 so that may be a generational problem. read more

Paul is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about electric bikes. He worked with me to identify the right bike for my needs and height. He also recommended a bike rack that would easily accommodate two electric bikes. When the bike and rack arrived, he patiently showed me how to use the bike. He also offered to demonstrate how to mount two bikes on the bike rack, even though we only purchased one of the bikes from this shop. He provided outstanding customer service! I have rented a number of different electric bikes and my new Como is my favorite ride by far! It is easy to handle, has terrific assist power and brakes smoothly. Sadly, when I contacted this store asking for help finding a part I needed to fix my e-bike, they were extremely rude and unwilling to help or point me in the right direction. The snobby staff wouldn't even answer a question because I wasn't going to buy one of their bikes, and even had the gall to tell me "yeah I'm pretty sure that none of the shops around will help you either unless you're buying one of their bikes first." So much for a community interested in helping each other out and making the world a slightly better place. And just to be clear, I only called this place because I'm desperate for help and there are very few of these shops around. read more

These guys REALLY saved my skin. I was working on my ebike at home and my crank pull got stripped and stuck in the pedal arm. I tried everything I could think of at home, but nothing worked. I called around to DC's various bike shops, and most of them wouldn't see me because they don't work on ebikes or aftermarket ebike kits. One other shop would help, but they couldn't see me for a month. I called ElectriCity and they were able to see me the same day. I took in the bike, and they got the crank pull unstuck in about 10 minutes. I can't overstate how much a relief that was: because the crank is part of my bike's mid-drive motor housing, the only other option would have been to pay hundreds of dollars for a new motor. Only one point of criticism: the COVID directions are kind of confusing. In one place it says to wait outside, but then there's a sign with COVID directions in the vestibule, but then there's also socially distanced numbered boxes on the ramp up to the entrance. And one of the signs says to check in at the north end of the 4800 building, but none of the buildings has conspicuous numbers on them. It might be a good idea to consolidate and simplify the instructions, then post them on the outside door. read more

This is the single worst establishment I have encountered in my entire life. There is no close second. Their service is appalling. I purchased two expensive bicycles from this shop. The subsequent lack of customer service was stunning. Failures to return calls. Nearly impossible to schedule service. When I finally received service, it was so negligent that the bicycle had to be returned immediately for a second attempt at repair. I have spoken with other customers who echo my concerns. There are choices, and I am very sorry I chose to deal with this horrible firm. The owner's absurd reply is emblematic of the mess that characterizes interactions with the company. His staff are ok. He is not. Don't take my word for it alone. Ask around. read more

My electric bike was making an odd sound after being ridden for about an hour and half. If I got off the bike for a while, the noise stopped and wouldn't restart unless I rode for the same amount of time again. I stopped by ElectricCityBikes even though I knew that I couldn't reproduce the sound. The mechanic noticed that the brakes were worn and metal was slightly touching metal. He speculated that as the metal got hot from friction, it was expanding to cause the noise. He also noticed that the bearings in the pedals were shot and might be the problem or they'll soon be a problem on their own. He fixed the bike while I waited. The service was quick, efficient, and the cost was reasonable. More importantly, he fixed the problem. read more

I am an avid bicycle rider and ride about 22 miles a day every weekend. That is why I was so upset 18 months ago when my Trek bicycle was stolen in front of the Van Ness Giant in DC despite it being locked admittedly with a thin chain that was cut. That bad experience (DC police were useless) resulted in a major change in my biking life. Being older and increasingly finding is more and more challenging to go up major hills (think Porter Street out of Rock Creek Park) I had been considering looking at an electric bicycle. Having my bike stolen forced may hand. After doing the appropriate research, I checked out a Trek and a Specialized SL at Electric City Bikes. I went with the Specialized SL predominately because it was lighter, looked more like a traditional bike, and the gears shifted a little more smoothly. Best decision possible. Jeff at Electric City Bikes does an excellent job of explaining everything and answering every question I raised. He was extremely patient and very nice. He clearly likes his job. One of my main concerns was that an electric bike would result in a significantly reduced workout. To my surprise, what I have found is that you are totally in control. An electric bike merely provides you with the ability to climb hills easier and that its totally up to you how much assist that you want. It also allows you to go faster if you feel the need. This bike is terrific and provides more than enough charge for several days of riding assuming that you don't constantly use the available electric assist. While I have had some minor issues (my bicycle bag wouldn't sit straight and I had a repeated flat tire), the folks at Electric City Bikes more than satisfactorily addressed my concerns. I especially appreciated their willingness to immediately change the tire on a busy Saturday. My only concern is that after 18 months and 3,300 miles, the cost for a tune up and replacement of worn-out parts was significant - over $450. That said, I would highly recommend moving to an electric bike, working with Jeff and the folks at Electric City Bikes. Also, get a really good lock that can't be easily cut. Bill read more

I just had a great experience with the bike mechanics. I really wanted to fine tune my gears and they worked with me and really listened. I had a less than stellar experience buying my bike from here a year ago. Granted, it was COVID bike scarcity times and maybe I didn't buy the perfect bike I wanted but I took what was available. I've worked with a bike fitter ,and two other bike stores and some geeky bike friends to transform it into the bike I wanted. read more

I just bought an electric bike from ElectriCity Bikes and I couldn't be happier. Though this place looks like it might be a chain, it's not. The owner, Charlie, met me at the door and immediately showed my his stock. I had a lot of questions and he had the answers. This isn't my first ebike so I have had some experience with these things but he did not come up short in getting me to the right bike. The store manager, Kyle was equally as helpful on the purchase and I walked away very happy about my decision. I have also taken my current ebike in to have it serviced there. What people don't necessarily realize about ebikes is that they sometimes break down. ElectriCity Bikes services all ebikes, all brands, whether you bought it from them or not. There are not many shops in the DC area that have the experienced ebike mechanics but it appears that these guys have a crew that can do the job. Thanks guys! read more

During the early days of electric bikes it was a pioneering store, with a knowledgeable expert handling all e-bike matters. He is long gone. The store expanded, the service deteriorated, with shoddy and vastly overpriced work becoming common. And behavior that can be considered as offensive has also been observed. There were better days, and nowadays there are better options. read more
