I had a 1993 Trek bike with lots of fancy accessories that was in a moldy shed for three decades. Griffin cycle made it brand new again and in a very short time! A great little bike shop in Bethesda. They sold me my son's first real bike, which was a nice, bright-orange Trek bike that's held up better than any other bike he's had. They did a good job fitting it to him and the whole experience was easy and friendly. While they're definitely more focused on selling bikes than repairs, gear, and tools, they still have a decent set of tools and things and are friendly about it. I was replacing a tube on a new gravel bike and thought I'd also need some tire levers. I brought in the old tube and they matched it to the replacement and sold me two of them, so I'd have a spare next time. They also recommended some cool tire levers that they didn't have in stock, but also sold me some others that would work since I couldn't find my old set. On the one hand, I'd kind of rather have a bigger set of tools and stuff out where people could see it, but they also had everything I needed and (in some ways) making me ask for them to help find it in the back was actually easier. It's really hard to complain. read more

If you want mechanics who really know bikes, can diagnose even the most subtle problems, and get your bike in tip top shape then Griffin is the place to go. They fixed a long standing hearing problem that nobody else could. They are also nice. Do not expect to drop your bike off and have it fixed right away. They do have an option to schedule a time slot so you do not have to be without your bike for a week or more. You pick a time in the future and just drop your bike off the prior day before they close. read more

Went to Griffin Cycle because my helmet adjustment strap was a bit wonky - I figured it was user error rather than an actual defect, but a good fit on the helmet is important for safety so I decided to check it out. They couldn't find my purchase history from my name or phone number - I probably didn't register when I bought it because ... why would I need to? But Alex just said don't worry about it, gave me a new helmet, no questions asked, no proof of purchase necessary. I went to a mirror and was screwing around with adjusting it perfect, he noticed me struggling and adjusted it for me in about 5 seconds. Awesome experience and proud that this is my local bike shop. My wife and I came to Griffin Cycle to rent bikes and we don't recommend them. After paying for the bike rentals, we spent 30 minutes waiting for our bikes even though there was staff just sitting around, visibly browsing the internet on the store computer. The bikes were OK but unfortunately my wife's rear tire went flat five miles from the store. That's when we noticed the store hadn't provided a flat kit. When we called the store, they said no one could pick us up because "all of the staff are assisting other customers" and told us to walk. When we got back to the store, there were four employees chatting and no customers. I love renting bike to explore a new city but don't recommend Griffin Cycle. read more

Brought a full suspension mountain bike in to replace a broken chain and the replacement link came undone on the very next ride on a downhill course causing us to lose the chain on the mountain and then have to pay $80 to rent a downhill bike instead. Shop was unwilling to refund the charges from the previous service and since I no longer trust the quality of their work, took the bike to a better qualified repair shop (Contes) to fix the problem. read more

I dropped by the Bethesda location for an estimate to replace worn out stuff on my bike and do a tune up. The very competent mechanic on duty that day estimated about $190 to get the bike in good shape, so I left it with him. When I returned to pick it up the bill was over $250. That's over 30% more than the estimate, which is gouging the customer by any standard (there are standards against excessive billing over the estimate for auto repair). Trying to recover from sticker shock, I attempted to make small talk with the owner while sticking a crowbar in my wallet to cover the unexpected charges, but all he kept saying was "Sign the (credit card) receipt, sign the receipt ..." For some reason he was in a big hurry to get me to sign the receipt and get me out the door. Zero interest in the customer, maximum interest in making another buck. The store is in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country (Bethesda), so the prices for merchandise and repairs are inflated for the wealthy clientele. The business is inherited from family. Competitors in more economical communities provide the same service at more reasonable prices. read more

Thanks so much to Nick and his team at Griffin Cycle! After a long hiatus from biking, I was in full panic mode and scrambling to gear up for an overnight bike trip I probably shouldn't have agreed to but off we go! I arrived at the shop unannounced and after outlining my concerns--& within the space of 30 minutes!--they replaced the handle bar riser stem and added larger and more durable pedals. They also noticed that the seat was angled incorrectly--boom fixed that too! Quick adjustment and lube to the gears and sprockets and I was out the door. I also wanted to note that that they moved into a great new space a couple of doors down from their original loc on Bethesda Avenue. It has more parking (which is certainly at a premium in Bethesda), more products, options and more knowledgeable staff. When you are headed up the Capital Crescent, make a left when you hit downtown Bethesda, go a block and a half and Griffin is on the right. And they have free filtered water! ‍ read more

For over 12 years Griffin Cycle has been my go-to neighborhood Bicycle store for every need around my bike, repairs and maintenance work. They always find the best suitable solution, especially when my rear suspension was done after 15 years. The company, that had produced the suspension did not exist anymore, but they miraculously found a compatible suspension! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Great local bike shop in downtown Bethesda. During COVID-19 we purchased a hybrid for my boyfriend as he didn't have a bicycle. The team had an efficient process for test riding and purchasing. Bike was built in a day and made for easy pick up. I especially liked that the guy who helped us wasn't trying to sell on a bunch of fluff - really only just what he needed. My only comment is there are a couple younger guys that work there an I find them not as friendly. Regardless, we will keep supporting Griffin! read more

I came to the shop a bit before they opened as they were setting up, They angrily asked me to move my car as they assumed I'd be going to another store to shop. After realizing I wanted to shop there they had me move my car a little forward so they can place bikes behind it. Still waiting in the car for them to finish sitting up so I can shop they end up hitting my car with a bike..at this point I just leave. Customer service 0 out of 10 if I could. Great bike shop tucked away in the corner of downtown Bethesda. I had two bikes that had essentially been in storage for over 15 years, and badly in need of a tune up. Both were customized Terry bikes so I really needed someone I could trust to lovingly resuscitate them. I looked at reviews for bike shops within a 15-mile radius, made a few vetting calls, and finally decided to entrust the bikes to Griffin. What a great decision: the folks at Griffin were pleasant, knowledgeable, and honest.
