Put my bike in for repair after an accident. Was given a very high estimated cost - based on 'needed' replacements, of which brake pad replacement was one. However, not that long ago, they had already replaced them (or at least I was so told and charged). Took the bike to another shop, where (1) gave me a much lower / more reasonable repair estimate and (2) observed that the brake pads were, in fact, "well worn". So, after having spent quite a bit on various repairs in the past, I now wonder how much I've been overcharged over the past? My suggestion, Caveat Emptor - double check to be sure - as Pres. Amazing service I dropped by Silver Cycles to have my bicycle tuned up for some summer riding. Everyone in the store was very super polite and willing to answer all of my questions. While the tune up was a bit more than what I have paid in the past, the price was inline with other bike shops in the area. I was very impressed that the quote for the tune up was pretty close to the actual price when I picked up the bike. Also, I was shocked (in a good way) with the turnaround for the tune up. I dropped off my bike around closing time, and it was ready early afternoon the next day. Since my bike is on the older side, I was expecting to hear that I would need to purchase 80 million parts, but that was not the case. I was told that it would be good to purchase X, Y, and Z, but these were not 'life or death' items. I dragged in my bike after a failed tube replacement of a few weeks ago and was expecting to be slammed for the cost of a new wheel, since the wheel clearly had caused 2 rapid flats in a row. Instead, the mechanic heard me out, identified an unsuitable plastic rim strip that someone at silver earlier had installed, and put in a proper rubber strip and new tube. no charge bc the previous worker shouldnt have used a plastic strip. They were honest and fair about their assessments and did not try to upsell me, And they informed me about the drawbacks of certain products even the more expensive ones. Worst bike maintenance I have ever received in 30 years of cycling. Paid $250 , they had the bike for 5 days, didn't fix the problem I brought it to them to fix, left me with 2 sticking wheels (brakes rubbing hard), and didn't fill the air in the tires..., made excuses about why bike was like this. Clearly nobody bothered to check the work. Everything about the experience was pretty much bad. I honestly am not sure what they did or did not do, but checking the work was not something anyone did.  The bike rode considerably worse after they gave it back. Was actually riding fine when i gave it to them, just squeaking under heavy pedaling.  Paid $100 to get the bike picked up and dropped off. Then $120 for the whole bike tune up and another $30 for a bottom bracket overhaul (they told me that's what it needed to fix squealing). They never called me to discuss what was going on with the bike. The process was not easy. I called 4 days later and they were like "oh we are working on your bike" When will it be ready? Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. Again nobody called me either day to say it's ready. I texted the person that had picked it up. She said "oh it's' ready"  The real issue is the bike was messed up when they gave it back to me. I brought it to them with a mechanical problem. They said "You need a new bottom bracket" so I said ok please fix it. They did not fix and then made excuses that it was something else. They had it for 5 days, could have test drove it and said "oh that didnt' work" I don't really believe they even did the work but will find out when I take it to another shop that does check their work. Part of the tune up is to adjust brakes, well they adjusted them very poorly. As soon as I started to ride the bike you could feel this drag. Again a simple test ride by a mechanic would have felt this. So severe that the front wheel will not make one revolution if you pick it up and spin it. Back wheel, exact same thing. Two brakes, two rubbing brake pads on 1 bike. I have never seen anything like this. I asked for a refund because I can't trust a shop that gave me back my bike like this and they did offer to fix it and "we take pride in our work" but they didnt offer to come get it that day and get it back to me that day. It was going to be another multi day situation. Many emails later they made more concessions and offering to fix at my convenience but not after making many other excuses about "things are working normally."  Not once did they say we didn't do the work right. They should have started with "we will come get the bike today and fix it." they didn't.  They also tried to make an excuse by saying "sometimes in transport things get jostled" basically saying all these problems are due to the bike being transported on a car bike rack for 15 minutes which did not make me trust them more. I have had that bike on my bike rack driving across the country for 20,000 miles, never had one brake rubbing problem and no squeaking when I pedal after. They made other excuses.  Frankly, I didn't trust them with my bike after the first experience and must have had 10 emails asking for a refund with no luck. DO NOT USE THEM FOR E-BIKES. I won't go into the long sad story, but they over-tightened my crank, which ruined the motor. Which, whatever, shit happens. But there was no acknowledgement by Silver Cycles that they had damaged my bike, and it sat in their shop for 6 days after that, until they finally said they couldn't fix it. Ugh. read more

I bought a bike off Facebook market but the seller never said anything about the fork being broken so I looked up closest bike shops in silver spring, and found "Silver cycles," and I didn't know if they allowed you to bring you own parts because some places don't allow it but they said they were able to install it for me, also all the people there were nice, They gave me a good estimate of when it would be done by. Overall a great experience since it was my first time going to a bike shop and their prices are really good based on how good they do it, and if anything ever happened to my bike I know where to go read more

Came in with a relatively simple issue, a flat tire. I was hoping to have it repaired as soon as possible as it is my primary means of transportation. The staff were sympathetic but said they wouldn't have my bike ready for another four hours because they didn't have a stand open. I reiterated the urgency, that I didn't have several hours to wait around for my bike. They were recalcitrant. Folks, you don't need an open stand to replace a tube. I ended up going somewhere else and giving them my business. The other store happily fixed my flat immediately. It is a place that I will not do business with again. Too expensive. I brought my bicycle to fix and changed the brakes. A day after leaving it, they said that chain needed replacement. I agreed with such repair but never mentioned the price on the callZ once bike was ready to pick-up rear wheel had a flat; when I left ir was ok. They replaced and charged it to me, even though I told them it was fine. One of the owners has poor customer skill. After that, believing that people should get a second chance, I went to buy a lock. The lady with poor customer skills was, in the worst assertive way, telling me that such lock could be cut. Then, why are you selling it? Or was it because you wanted to sell me the same brand but most expensive as you suggested? And you did not like my decision of selling me the one I picked. The worst part wad when she insulted my intellect telling me that she needed to create the code for the lock. If I were the owner of that shop, she would be out of job in one sit! She needs to learn how to treat people, an stopped being a grumpy lady; we already has crap people in government. I will never but anything from these people. I rather keep doing business with bike place in Takoma, they know how to treat people and smile; none of these people know how to greet and smile when someone entered their shop. read more

TLDR: I spent $1000 here on a bike that doesn't fit me based on a recommendation and repeated assurances from an employee. I came into the shop asking for help many times, hoping they could/would help me after such a large purchase. The last time I was in the shop, a different employee was really disrespectful to me, and at this point I really just don't want to come back here because of that interaction. If the manager/owner reaches out to me to try to help me out with finding a reasonable solution, I will revise this review. If I don't hear from them, I'm just going to sell the bike at a loss and buy a new one somewhere else, and I obviously won't be coming back to this shop. I wanted to buy a mountain bike and Ivan helped me pick one out. He was helpful and knowledgeable, and after his assurances that he was confident a size L would fit me, we ordered a bike that they didn't have in stock and I wasn't able to test ride. Obviously it was risky to purchase without test riding, but I don't know much about bikes and I was hoping I could rely on my local bike store to help me out (also Ivan assured me of his confidence it would fit me multiple times). He said it was based on the fact that women tend to have longer legs than men. Unfortunately after receiving the bike, I had fit issues that none of the employees I interacted with were able to diagnose. I called and asked if I could get a bike fitting- I was told they don't really do fittings for mountain bikes, but I went in and they basically just said it was fine. After that I came into the shop probably around 10 different times asking for help (it was just about every weekend for a few months), because it just didn't feel right. I was reassured by multiple employees who basically glanced at me on it that it fit me. When I tried to describe the discomfort I was feeling in my wrists, everyone seemed to think I was looking for a more upright posture, when in reality I was just looking for a longer reach. They also minimized the instability I felt with the height. So finally after making a few other adjustments, Ivan changes out the stem for a shorter one, again on the assumption that I was looking for an upright posture, and that I have a short torso and long legs (I believe the opposite to be true now). After trying to get used to the new fit for a few weeks, I came back in and get the stem changed out again, this time cutting the difference between the original stem and the new shorter one because I felt "scrunched". I then a few weeks later came in again and I asked if I could get the original stem put back on. I realize this was annoying for Tracy, but wow I really was shocked at her reaction. Tracy asked me condescendingly if I was a racer, because of how fine-tuned of changes I was asking for. I found this really insulting, as I've been very open about the fact that I don't know much about bikes. She reluctantly changed it out, and proceeded to loudly complain the whole time. I asked her what are my options if we can't get this bike to fit, and she said that it was my choice to buy it. She said if I wanted them to take it back they'd have to charge me as if I had been renting the bike for $50 a day the whole time I've had it (which at that point was more than what I paid for it). The critical tone and hypocrisy kind of amazed me, how she went back and forth from "wow you've hardly rode it, how can you even say it doesn't fit?" to "wow you've really rode this, and you expect us to take it back?". All I wanted was fit help from the place I trusted with a $1000 purchase, and up until then, I had been extremely patient with the process. After chatting and cycling recently with a relative who is an experienced cyclist, I'm confident that the L size I bought was too large, and what I really need is a size M with an elongated stem (he says we both have a "gorilla" body type apparently, and a long torso and short legs. I'm 5'9 fwiw). I'm sad to say that I'm looking for a new bike at this point. read more

I dropped my bike off around August. It was poorly assembled where I purchased it and the bike smith said that I needed a total rebuild. There was no rebuild available for a few months. That sucked so I just told him to fix what was broken and I would pick it up ASAP. I picked up my bike and everything worked reasonably well. It was fairly inexpensive and quick. I only use the store for emergency repairs and I always am left with the impression that they overcharge. I understand that they have to complete against online giants like Amazon or Competitive Cyclist but while REI charges $20 to install a tube they charge $38, almost twice as much. And while a tubeless tire goes for about $60 they will charge $100. It's a convenient location and they have a good mechanic. If I was wealthy I wouldn't care about the difference in price. They're open during the covid-19 lockdown. That's really good. read more

Linda explained to me in a SUPER PATRONIZING tone of voice that she could not find a gear shifter in all "the looking around" she did. I disagreed with Linda, I explained to Linda that all she'd ave to do is order the shifter from radpowerbikes.com, she denied this possibility to call radpowerbikes.com to order the shifter, and in a further CONDESCENDING tone told me that it would not be possible to order a shifter from radpowerbikes.com because that is not how the bike industry works. So never mind the fact that I called radpowerbikes.com and I was able to order the exact shifter for $10 and change. I examined the shifter I paid Linda well over $60 to replace and $60 to install. It was a badly scratched and oil stained shifter, it is clearly not a new shifter. I explained this fact and showed Linda how beat up and scratches up the replacement shifter was. I also explained to Linda that I had ordered the exact replacement from radpowrrbikes.com. Linda could care less about her previous excuses as to why she could not replace the shifter, and that the scratched up shifter she did manage to replace was like "new". Further insult to injury, I would have to pay Linda to install the real shifter I had ordered from rad power bikes.com. Linda does not know how to run a bicycle shop, she is extremely defensive, and she will fix your bike with incredibly poor standards. The shifter she replaced on my bike is sub par, and clearly an old used beat up shifter she picked off of some other bike in her shop. Linda is rude, same goes to her employees. I am having a bike shop in DC install the correct shifter. SAVE UR MONEY AND TIME, go to any other bike store that services electric bikes. read more

do not go to this place to fix e-bikes. the technician didn't put a rear torque washer on as a result warping the rear wheel dropout. i mentioned this to them and told them how they messed up. they then tried to blame it on me... super disappointed and bike is now unusable... no accuntability and still charged me, after i went and explained how they screwed up, showed mechanic diagram of the washer they needed to us, and again they put a wrong washer on!!! read more

I was really impressed. I needed an attachment for my bicycle. They had exactly what I was looking for at a great price (half what another shop was charging) and installed it while I was waiting. They really care for their customers. A dad was there with his little kids, and they were perfectly relaxed as a three year old went through a basket of bells ringing each one. I was impressed that there were three mechanics simultaneously repairing bicycles while I was there and there is seating for customers to watch. read more

I usually go to Takoma Bicycles, but they didn't have the brake pads I needed and recommended I call Silver Cycles. (I only went to SC once before, during COVID, for a tune up, which was also fast and the bike was ready faster than they originally quoted me.) They had the pads in stock and I drove over. Brake pads replaced in less than a half hour and quick, kind, efficient service. The older woman at the front desk and mechanic were both really nice. Didn't try to oversell me on anything and even double-checked my wheel locks, which I appreciate as someone who has gone over the bars before. AND MY BRAKES WORK NOW! read more

I came in here looking to shop for a new bike and get some help. I remained in the store for a complete 30 minutes without any service. There was only one lady helping customers while the other employees I assume were only there for repairs. However I don't mind waiting on service usually. What made me end up walking out was overhearing how they treated customers. I heard the main lady answer the phone very rudely. I also heard the conversation a young lady had with the repair member. He was so unprofessional and pushing rude. She had questions about her tune up he wouldn't help her with and he was overtly uninterested in helping. The shop offers everything you'd expect from a bike shop. The service might be quicker for other people but the attitude towards your customers should can't be excused. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!! DISHONEST SERVICE!!! UPSELLING!! As a physician, I don't like unethical behavior and misdiagnosis for convenience of profit. So I went in to have my tire aligned(trued). The first thing the do is stark looking for defects and problems to sell me a new tire. They pull out a flashlight and say, "Aha! You have a micro crack here, the rim is defective and will have "catastrophic failure", we can't align it you need a whole new rim!" My spidy senses went up and I could sense they were up selling the service and not looking out for my interest. They then proceed to tell me a new rim cost $180 which is about 1/4 what the bike is probably worth. I proceeded to go to a legit bike shop in Takoma which was 5m from Silver Cycles and they aligned the tire for 20 bucks. read more

Not off to a great start. I purchased a bike for in store pickup. The website and my receipt both say in store pickup is free, no shipping charge. On the same receipt, I'm charged for shipping. I called the store to ask about this and was given no explanation. I was told it's just the way it is. I hope that they assemble my bike better than the way they charged me. When reading Yelp reviews, I am somewhat skeptical of the one-star reviews, especially the ones with paragraph after paragraph of tedious detail. Since you may do the same, I will make this brief. Scroll through the negative reviews, and you will find a common thread: slow service, poor communication, charging for additional unauthorized work, and attitude from the manager when any of this is brought to her attention. My experience included all of the above - AND they did not give me an itemized receipt. 1) When dropping off my bike for a routine tune-up, was told they were backed up and it could take 3 weeks. After 6 weeks, I called - only to find that the bike had been ready for a month, though I was never called. 2) They performed additional work I had neither requested nor authorized, bringing the price up to $120 from the $90 I was quoted. When I protested the additional charges, the manager snapped "That's part of a tune-up." If so, why wasn't that part of the price quoted? 3) Riding my bike home, I noticed that the handlebars had been twisted out of alignment while in the shop. Easily fixed at home with a wrench, but the fact that they (a) did this and then (b) left it that way didn't inspire confidence in the quality of their work. 4) I declined a printed receipt because the cashier assured me one would be emailed to me. The Square receipt I received was, however, not itemized, so I have no record of the work for which I was charged. read more

I have an older internal hub bike that would regularly slip a cog or two as I rode. The downtown Bethesda shop that originally sold me the bike could not fix the problem in two separate service visits. I was starting to think about getting a new bike but decided to try Silver Cycles. My bike came back working perfectly, as good as if not better than new. My bike was in horrible condition when it went in, coming out it rides like BAAAHTA! Great staff. I was recently in to purchase a new bike lock. Turned out the lock was faulty. Got myself stuck on a fence a few miles away. I called the shop right before close, and they were very willing to send people over to look at the lock for me. With no way of getting the faulty lock off, they went back to the shop to grab the equipment to cut the lock. To my surprise, they came back with a brand new lock for me and cut my bike free. I've been to the store a couple of times by now (for shopping and bike maintenance), and I've been overly relieved by how friendly and accommodating the staff has been. I am 6'6" and had limited options and they spent a ton of time digging through the wholesale warehouse to make sure I was aware of anything that was available. I went to this shop after purchasing what I thought was a nice bike via Craigslist. I ended up need a few things replaced and or fixed. The cost of repair was nearly as much as I paid for the bike, but I digress. My original estimate was $168, but the final cost came to $178 ($10 difference), that was okay. When I went to pay for the work, I was waited on by an older lady that works the register. I asked if the work had a warranty, a simple yes or no answer....She proceeded to let me know that I had a "low end" bike and that she guaranteed that I'd be back for more repairs. Toatally NOT what I asked about. I repsonded, so that's a no? She answered my question, finally, after trashing my bike. I spent $178 in their shop and I expected better treatment. The moral of the story is, the lady at the register is crass and curt and I will not be returning as she predicted. Good work, bad customer service. read more

Last year I undertook the ambitious task of trying to build a bike--without tools, an instruction book, or much of a clue as to what I was doing...aside from the fact that I knew the wheels went on the bottom and the chain went over the knobby things and pulled the wheels... But, thanks to the guys at Silver Cycles, I now am expert (almost) in bike building and repair. The guys the work there (and one lone woman, who owns the store) are all very helpful, knowledgeable (with one notable exception), and friendly. Unlike so many other bike stores I've been to, they were patient with me, explaining how to put things together, they didn't charge for minor repairs, and they never made me feel stupid for not knowing how something worked. They're also low pressure, and don't try to sell you the most expensive version of something that you don't really need. And, best of all is how accommodating they are--one more than one occasion they stayed open late for me, shared a beer, and offered to have me come in after hours so that they could teach me how to build my wheels. I am supremely impressed with Silver Cycles, and if I still lived even vaguely in the area (Silver Spring, near the beltway), I'd go nowhere else for bike parts or help. read more
