Yum, YUM! We came here because Dorian had eaten here before with her parents on a day trip to St. Augustine, and I was pleasantly suprised. We made reservations and were seated promptly outdoors, like requested. We had a slightly drunken and leisurely early dinner and we shared smaller items versus ordering large entrees. We started with the 1905 salad, which I decided was kind of like a cuban sandwich in salad form. It was super garlicy and delicious, and the combo of ham, cheese, and olives was great. I would honestly come here again and just order the salad. Before we got our salad, we ordered a pitcher of sangria.....we opted to go for the non-traditional version, which included sparkling wine, brandy, and the array of fruits. It was pretty much the best thing ever. The bread that was served was out of control good; really flaky and ot of the oven fresh. Definitely a good way to start a meal. After salad, we shared some cheese dip with bread (I can't remember the actual name of it) but it was a really tasty spanish flavored sauce with cheese melted on top, served with crusty bread. I had some chicken croquettes and some crab croquettes.....the chicken were far more perfect than the crab, for my palette anyway. Dorian had a black bean soup, which was tasty and huge. Ok we came here b/c Mom wanted to AND only after we had a bad experience at Casa Maya. She has also been to the one in Ybor and the one in Orlando and insisted we eat here. We walked in and were told there was a 20 minute wait for 3, even though clearly there were a bunch of open tables for 4 sprinkled throughout the restaurant. We also had to ask if there was a bar (poor hostess training here). She should've mentioned there was one upstairs right away when we were told we had to wait, and then also at least make the suggestion that IF there were seats available up there it was first come, first serve with a full menu. Anyhow, we wondered upstairs, sat down at the bar and ordered a carafe of red sangria, which was very tasty. After that carafe, we had already looked at the menus and decided we would just stay there and eat. Dad ordered a snapper dish, mom ordered an Spanish/Italian style Eggplant dish, and I ordered shrimp with rice, we were famished at this point. Thankfully they brought us a huge chunk of bread each and we ate that as we ordered another carafe of Sangria. Food took longer than I would've liked to show up, but the place was jumping. I think the whole 3rd floor was a banquet/wedding/something. There was like a 20 top on our floor and a 30 top on the first floor, so this place does cater to groups. The food took so long I actually mentioned to my mom that we should've ordered a salad additionally and now we know why they were on a wait with open tables....kitchen was backed up. I sat on the end of the bar and had to request mom and dad move down b/c I was right by the door into the kitchen which is like being in the first row of a MMA fight. That door swang open a million miles a minute, 10 times a minute, I saw people get smacked, a girl slip and fall, it was just a mess.... Food finally arrived. Mine was like a C at best. Shrimp were salty, there wasn't enough sauce, and my rice stuck together like rice balls-clumpy, glutenous, and mushy. Not very good, but I was so hungry I wasn't returning it. Mom's eggplant, in my opinion, was very salty and undercooked. She rated her's a B. Dad's fish was again salty, cooked fine, but the veggies were grossly undercooked. Surprisingly, his rice was just right. Dad's rating was a B- maybe C+. Think there's work to be done here, maybe they need to go back to the drawing board a bit, get the 'special sauce' back. Came here because a neighbor recommended their sangria - wasn't all that though the presentation was nice. Overall it was good but: GOOD: pretty restaurant serve a lot of food good service by the waitress BAD: the food was okay- not terrible - like it had good flavor BUT the rice was way too mushy for my liking the hostess at the front pissed me off which wasn't a great start - I asked if we could sit upstairs and she's like where? like uh, idk I haven't been here before, anywhere upstairs I guess - and so my husband gets more specific and says, can we sit in the patio deck where she cut us off like no, you can't sit there - no explanation - we later learned it was because it's only open for the banquet hall or something but she could have easily explained that - just came off rude. THEN when she told the waitress to sit us - they sit us in the middle floor like I don't want to be one of those annoying people but what part of i want to sit upstairs did she not understand?! Anyways - we got asked to be moved again and then everything was fine - our waitress was great. Just finished my meal and I'm enjoying my sangria in bliss. Crystal was my server and she was superb. Always smiling and she was happy to help me through the menu as something I ordered last year seemed to be off the menu (only bummer). Everything I've ever ordered here is fantastic and you really can't go wrong. The food and atmosphere are perfection. Also, the salad dressing and the coffee in the gift shop bring me back to St. Augustine regularly. If someone says something bad about this place they are just an unhappy soul. Don't walk here. I absolutely love the decor of this place. It is a great place to stop in on a really hot day or a rainy day (taxis and shuttles up and down the street so have no fear if you get caught in a shower). I must say, I was really sadly disappointed with this visit. I have been here in the past for lunch and enjoyed their signature Cuban sandwich. Today, we started with the calamari fritas. It was fresh calamari, but the breading was falling off and the dipping sauce was not a good compliment to this dish. The aioli was too thick and bland. I decided to try one more tapas before ordering a meal. The pork skewers was the second selection. It came out on a very small dish, and a horrible presentation. There was nothing much to them other then being cooked in olive oil. Not unique and not worth making a third poor selection. The service was satisfactory and the ambiance was amazing. My wife and I ate at the Columbia last night and it was a good experience, but I was expecting to be blown away. The restaurant has a very tired feel to it. Metal outdoor furniture and being sat next to the noisy kitchen rounded out the overall ambiance. Our waitress was lovely and fairly attentive (i'll explain in a minute). I ordered a Mojito which although refreshing tasted like they forgot to add any liquor. For $10 I would've complained if my waitresses came back before I finished it. The bread that was brought out was delicious and was classic Cuban bread with plenty of butter. I ordered the Spanish bean soup which was the tastiest soup I ever had - filled with garbanzo beans and chorizo with a tomato base really good! The timing wasn't good as I was just finishing up our dinners were already out. There was a huge lag between getting our soup and then entrées came out too quickly. I went to this restaurants website to look up exactly what we eat for dinner but it hasn't been updated so I could only see the lunch menu. My dinner was tasty, with some overcooked Spanish rice. My wife's dinner was really salty. Again I wish I could tell you exactly what the dishes are called. This lack of attention on the website seems indicative of what's happening in the restaurant. This st. Augustine location lives up to the legendary story and reputation started in Tampa. This is a must if you are in the area. Always crowded the reservation system and greeting was prompt and the table was ready on arrival on a hectic lunch seating with the entire fam. Server immediately took drink orders, brought everyone their delicious bread and took meal orders. They have a few classic items and we typically order those when we come here or tampa. Adults ordered sangria and it was delicious as always. For mains we ordered their famous salad, Cuban sandwiches and some empanadas for the table. Food met the high standard we expect. My father-in-law, a local resident, treated us for lunch here. The beautiful spanish architecture was a feast for the eyes. We were very hungry. We were quickly seated. I was impressed by the acoustics as I incorrectly assumed a large room would produce loud conversations from neighboring tables. Not so. I ordered a dish that contained chorizo. I'll find out the name and edit this review. It was over the top delicious. I was so thrilled with my choice that I ate every bite on my plate. I neglected to offer my husband a bite. Perhaps my ravenous hunger took control over my sharing skills. ;-) He said is dish was great as well. YUM. Everyone was happy with their selections. We all drank ice tea. I wish I ordered he Sangria. It was recommended. I stuck with the tea as no one else was ordering alcohol. I've been coming to Columbia since I was a kid--both the St Augustine and Tampa locations--so it was nice to return with a friend to this one. The interior is utterly lovely and has more than ample space plus a feeling of serious, old-fashioned charm. That hasn't changed in the least. The waitstaff I found to be a little less experienced than I'd remembered from this and the Tampa and St. Pete Beach locations: the woman who seated us and our waitress were both nice enough but not on top of their game. They both would have been fine for an Olive Garden, but for Columbia they didn't do anything to make it feel more personal, go over the specials, or otherwise indoctrinate the guest to Cuban and Spanish cooking. I had the overall feeling that what had once been more of a fine dining experience now had become mostly about dealing with the typical hordes of tourists you find in St Augustine; the waitress made us feel a little rushed also near the close of our meals which is not what I expect at all for Columbia. Perhaps it's a trade-off: I was there in boardshots and a ballcap--a tourist myself--but while I enjoyed being able to walk in in this casual way, I kind of missed the more formal atmosphere of the Tampa Columbia. There was a loss of the special feeling of the experience you'd hope for with a really established place like Columbia. The food was fine but not too impressive overall: we ordered tapas and they were good, but not exceptional. My empanadas were quite good, but the gambas "al ajillo" were too heavy on garlic and too small a portion, even for tapas. Overall, I also felt things were a bit overpriced for the quality of cooking and the size of the portions. Next time I am in St Augustine, I intend to try The Floridian, which I've heard only great things about, and doesn't apparently carter towards a tourist experience over the sake of well-nuanced cooking. That said, four stars for now based on many other, better, experiences plus the fact my friend Justin tonight was very pleased with his dinner--he said it was four stars and I'll go with that, but expect a little better overall from Columbia next time. read more

This place is a real gem in St. Augustine!!! The ambiance is spectacular because it is so reminiscent of the old world & truly takes you back in time since it is over a century old. The Spanish/Cuban cuisine is delicious & the aroma that fills the air is truly magical. I absolutely love Spanish/Cuban food. My mother & I both ordered the half a Cuban sandwich & half a salad & chose the 1905 salad. I really enjoyed the sandwich but I absolutely loved the 1905 salad & the garlicky dressing definitely has to be one of the best I've ever had in my life. I'm not quite sure when I'll get back to St. Augustine but if I do, I'll definitely be stopping in for a 1905 salad because the combination of crisp iceberg lettuce, julienned ham, olives, Swiss & Romano cheeses mixed together table side with that heavenly garlic dressing is amazing. read more

We were a fairly large group. We were given only 4 choices of an entree. We were all served the same salad that was absolutely dripping in dressing, that most couldn't eat it. I ordered the Paella it was like a cow salt lick! IT WAS DISGUSTING! The dessert, the key lime pie was DISGUSTING, it was obviously a previously made, commercially, produced item and not freshly made there that you'd expect from a supposed quality restaurant . Location, ambiance: 5 stars. It is romantic yet still festive. Centrally located in the heart of old downtown St. Augustine. It is much more spacious inside than it appears on the outside. It is also within walking distance of the Castillo de San Marcos. Sangria: 5 stars! This is the first red Sangria I've had that is not laden with sweetness. It is not dry, either. There is great balance of fruit juice and dry red wine in the mix. Food: 3-4 stars. While my Paella Valenciana was well seasoned and full of seafood and meats. It lacked saffron and that golden crust on the bottom of the rice. I think that's due to the paella being baked rather than cooked on the stove top. The seafood was also a bit overcooked. The chicken and pork were beyond tough and dry. Hubby and I really loved their fresh Cuban bread, though. It was similar to the baguette, but not the same. Hubby really liked the Palomilla--thin sirloin marinated and grilled then topped with mojo. I thought the meat was a bit pale looking for having been "grilled". It was not a tender cut of meat but the flavor was good. All in all, it is still a great experience for us and worth the visit. Yes, it is touristy. But it is not cheesy at all. read more

The decor and ambiance are excellent, and the service was very good as well. The staff was receptive (at our table and the bar upstairs), and the wait estimate (we had a reservation) was accurate. The queue for a table appeared to move quickly, and the spot definitely is a tourist trap. Apparently they are the oldest Spanish (the kind from Europe) restaurant in the US. I'm a vegetarian and prefer spicy food. The food itself, however, was absurdly bland, and ultimately we barely dented either of our dishes. We ordered the egg quiche (though on the menu it's a tapas, it's a meal in itself for one person), as well as the eggplant Parmesan. The quiche was unpalatably bland. The eggplant was technically prepared well (not bitter or salty), but ultimately lacked inspiration. They don't carry hot sauce (apparently this is a New World invention, and the menu is too authentic to include it), so we tried to use their tomato paste/ sauce as a substitute. Fail. I'd consider trying other items on the menu (given a voucher or a significant coupon since most dishes are at least $20,) but will definitely take my own hot sauce, just in case. read more

The Columbia has been a family favorite for years. The food is consistently good and service is usually also good. If you're around Tampa, check out the restaurant there as they also have a flamenco show available while you have dinner. For the past two years, my mom has requested her birthday dinner be at Columbia so she could get paella. Having a birthday two days before Christmas pretty much ensures reservations are mandatory and it'll be crazy no matter where we go. In recent years, Columbia closed in what was previously an atrium to allow for more seating. We were seated there last year and I wasn't a fan. Acoustics were very loud making it hard to hear the table conversation, it was very cold, and our waitress was off her game. The food, however was good. This year I requested a table on the first floor in the main room with the fountain. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation as they originally tried to seat us in the atrium and I said no. The hostess didn't initially see the note for my seating request but it was remedied pretty quickly. It was packed like it always is this time of year. We started with a pitcher of the cava sangria. The white sangria is bubbly and refreshing. Not too sweet, not as heavy as the traditional red sangria. Then we were brought out warm Cuban bread and butter. The Cuban bread is seriously some of the best you can find in this area of Florida. It has the perfect crispy crust to soft inside ratio. Put on some butter and a tiny sprinkling of salt and I'm in heaven. For starters, you can't go wrong with the croquettes or the 1905 salad. The salad is made table side with their signature dressing, ham and cheese and is practically a meal in itself. For entrees, my mom loves the paella valenciana which has both meat and seafood. I personally love the boliche criollo. The round roast is so tender, the chorizo in the middle is flavorful and there is a killer gravy poured on top. Portions are very generous here so bring your appetite or leave with leftovers like I always do. The roast pork is similarly great. The arroz con pollo is standard but I can make that at home and rarely order it. My brother tried the Marilyn and Joe dish today. He was brought the wrong dish twice. Again, so many people at once means occasionally mistakes are made. He got chicken salteado instead. Luckily, his dish was actually waiting for him and was fixed quickly. Our waiter boxed up the chicken for us to take home since it would have been just thrown away. Most dishes are served with white rice and beans or yellow rice with vegetables and platanos maduros which are sweet fried plantains. For dessert, our waiter brought out a small flan with a candle for mom to enjoy and they sang her happy birthday. If you've saved room, you must try the bread pudding. Many years ago a waiter at Columbia convinced me to try the bread pudding. I was not a huge bread pudding fan but he told me to go with it and if I didn't like it, he'd replace it. Well, yeah, I loved every bite. White chocolate and Cuban bread combined in firm textured bread pudding. It's topped with dark chocolate shavings and rum sauce. It's lick the plate good. Like I'll stop eating my meal just to save room for dessert. There is a small shop attached to the resultant where they sell various gourmet and Hispanic themed items - Cuban bread, paella pans, their cook book, etc. I'll typically buy some bread if they haven't run out. Prices tend to skew towards the special occasion restaurant, but it's definitely worth a try. You'll just probably want to call for reservations or be prepared to wait! read more

The gazpacho soup tasted like water with diced green peppers and onions - the people who dinned with me had better dishes. I was excited to have a special dinner with my wife and as soon as I was sat on the table I asked for a less noisy table and they said that all tables where booked but at least five tables were empty doing my dinner. We order the Cuban sample platter and some of the tapas. The Cuban sampler was cold and I didn't even know if he was pork beef or chicken that I was eating. The rice was overcooked and tasteless. Considering this was a Cuban restaurant, this dish should be a staple specialty but was a total disappointment. Same goes for the tapas. I was kind of surprised by this place. My friend recommended this place but never really indicated it was going to be an upscale restaurant. My wife and I happened to be in dress clothes, but we also had a 1-year old basically tagging along. I think if I had known ahead of time I would not have gone today. The parking was near impossible to find. We parked several blocks away because we could never find parking and everything seemed to cost money. There was a parking lot in the back apparently, but I still don't know that I could find it very well. It's down an alley and I believe it is free if it is validated afterwards. We had to wait about 30 minutes to get a seat. I would recommend a reservation next time for sure. Once we were seated it took another 15 minutes or so before a waitress even introduced herself. The menus were long and complicated and really focused quite a bit on the history. It wasn't very interesting to be honest. I wanted to focus on the food. There were tons of options. My wife ended up choosing the Chicken Salteano. I got the Paella "de la Valencia." We both got some toasted bread and some whipped butter that was very good. I tried a bite of my wife's food and it was pretty delicious. I was still waiting for my food because the Paella takes 30 minutes to cook. They should probably change that to 45 minutes. My Paella was very good. The calamari was delicious, the mussels were decadent and the clams added a wonderful flavor. There was definitely some kind of wine sauce I believe. The scallops and shrimp were wonderful as expected. On a final note we were sat by the kitchen door. I am pretty sure that is because we had a small child with us. This was both good and bad I suppose. We sat so long waiting to order and get our food that it was a bad thing. On a good note the kitchen door would open and wonderful aromas would pop out and make me even hungrier. Also, I ran out of water before the waitress checked on us. I needed to drink something and ended up drinking some of my wife's Sprite because I needed it to get some food down and I had drank all of my water. I don't drink soda. We ordered the black bean soup as an appetizer, and I had ropa vieja as my entree. The black bean soup was served warm, but I truly believe it was just canned black beans poured over rice. I wasn't really that impressed with it. When I received my entree, it wasn't so warm. I don't think the food here is authentic at all. I've had ropa vieja at a cuban place around the corner from my house.. But this place did not get it right. I also ordered tostones to replace the sweet plantains, and they were oil logged. It was our first time visiting St.Augustine and our friend's recommended The Columbia Restaurant. Our experience was absolutely amazing! Our food was outstanding and our service was even better. The 1905 salad and Shrimp and Yellow rice were amazing. We had Jesse as a server and he did a terrific job! He was very attentive and went out of his way to made sure we had a great first visit. Columbia management contacted my husband and I and apologized profusely for our experience. They must have pulled the receipt for the meal because they comped the whole meal. I didn't ask for that, but I appreciate the gesture considering it was over $200.
