We just ordered some warm cocktails and soup since we were just going to be wandering the neighbor Draper park. Server was pleasant, and we were given time to relax, enjoy our drinks and then our food. Drinks were excellent and soups were pleasant and served properly. If you are in a hurry, then go find some fast food place as this is a relax and enjoy place. Love the decor and the private areas are ideal for a romantic time or small family gathering. Let me start with the good the service was impeccable. Our waiter was very attentive making sure drinks were full and flowing. The food was the issue. It was extremely overpriced. My steak was $85ish dollars. I ordered it medium well and it came out rare. It also had some sort of spicy rub on it. Anyone who knows steak knows a good steak doesn't need to be hidden behind poor seasoning. Food and outdoor setting were nice, but service was comically bad. Took 3 hours from seating to paying our bill, of which about 30 minutes was spent actually eating. The rest of the time we were negotiating with our waitress trying to order drinks, get water, order food, get food, get bill, pay bill, etc. Each of these activities, for whatever reasons, seemed difficult and confusing. For example it took 35 minutes to get cocktails and we had to ask if we could actually order drinks. When they came, my $18 Old Fashion barely had an ounce of liquid (see attached pic). After reading all the other reviews, I was almost disappointed that we didn't have a crazy experience with the owner. He was quick, professional, and gracious in making reservations and getting our party of eight seated. The ambience was cozy and enjoyable and the service was excellent. And while the food didn't blow me away, it was delicious. I had the Cognac Creamed Filet Mignon. The filet was tender and cooked just like I asked. Everything was a mellow delicious- nothing was overly-flavored, just subtle and enjoyable to taste. The croissant bread pudding, though, was to die for. I'd definitely recommend saving room for dessert if you dine here. Four stars because it's quite expensive. I was with a work party of eight, and we spent around $900, after a generous tip. The bottled craft beers were $18, so I opted for the New York style sour cocktail, which was the same price. I'm glad I did because it was delightful. Some other reviewers complained about the portion size being too small. That wasn't my experience. However, if you're in for quantity over quality, this may not be your place. Just an excellent experience on our first dining at this unique location in the South Valley. A picturesque setting with intimate dining. Every item was well and thoughtfully presented, from the rich artichoke soufflé through their signature salad, to perfectly executed seafood. Of note: their Brazilian Seafood Stew is flavorful and well stocked with halibut and shrimp. Dessert options were slightly limited, but their brûlée was a very good cap to the meal. Good beverage options...and the service was excellent. I found this charming restaurant on social media-a friend had posted pictures, and it looked amazing. But when I first discovered it, we were in the dead of winter. So I bookmarked it to come back and visit when the weather was nicer-I wanted to take advantage of the outdoor seating. The day of our reservation arrived and, as luck would have it, there was rain. Boo! We were moved inside, which I don't fault the restaurant for. The ambience is slightly upscale, with tables very close to one another. They do their best with the physical constraints-there's only so much you can do with an old restored house. We ate at noon on a Sunday-and were hoping for lunch food, but learned that it was the brunch menu. The items that we ordered were good-everything was carefully plated and presented in a beautiful way. Others have mentioned the high price point for bottled soda. Our server told us that they were changing machines and the bottles were temporary. The pomegranate mojito was delicious and very fruity. Ordered drinks. Took foreeeevvver. Appetizer. Escargot stuffed mushrooms. Terrible! No flavor. Literally a snail on a mushroom with cheese sprinkled on top. Cheese was not even melted. Came out cold as if it was in the fridge two second prior. Had to send back. Still not good hot. Flavorless. Come on! For this place to be fine dining, and how expensive it is, you are treated like you are eating at your local village inn. I'm not sure you even know what fine dining is at this place. A real fine dining place knows when to clean your table after appetizers and before dinner. After our appetizer, food was spilled on the table. Waitress just acted like she didn't notice. We waited over an hour for our slop. Fish stew. This was okay, but honestly tasted like it was heated up. And the chicken dish as well. These both must have been popped in the microwave. I literally should have eaten at the local village inn. It would have been better and cheaper. Not sure who you have cooking back there, but it's definitely not a chef. We had 2 meals, 1 appetizer, 4 Tito shots and 2 cocktails. $200 later for cold appetizer, and a crappy meal. After we waited an hour for our food, we literally almost just cashed out and left. But then our meals miraculously appeared. Honestly, the only good thing about my terrible dinner experience, was the piano player. She was awesome! Service was a 7 out of 10. Okay. Not the best. Beautiful fall decor and lighting is lovely. Food was excellent. Service was superb. But - we were seated at 6:00. Placed our order by 6:15 and did not receive our food until 7:15! Not an exaggeration! This was a Tuesday evening and we had to speed- shovel our expensive food in our face -because we had 7:30 tickets to the Hale theater. Restaurant was not crowded. The other reviews on here clearly agree. We had a bigger group of young people with reservations, and the owner clearly was unhappy. They refused to serve the group unless every person would spend over $85. Keep in mind, there were young people with us, also people that weren't super hungry who were forced to spend extra money just to not ruin the experience for others. This forced us to order more items than we wanted.. made me realized that most of the food here is also garbage. No wonder they have to force people to order more of it. I get the idea of being "exclusive" and high class, but never in my life have I seen such a douche move on the part of management.. and as much as they like to pretend they're Nobu they're food is decent at best, and the price tries to make you pretend that it's better than it is. This is only the second time I have written a review - so that says something about my review. I consider it gift to even give one star. From start to finish - more than disappointing! The service was beyond slow - 30 minutes to get appetizer - which was bruschetta that consisted of cooked tomatoes that were served warm and awful. We then waited about 45 minutes for our entrees. When they arrived they were barley warm and I mean barley. We are more than willing to pay for a high priced dinner, but when you get this kind of food - really frustrating. I went to dinner last night with 4 friends, when we arrive we were seated outside. The only thing this place has going for it is the outdoor seating. The setting is very pretty. Our server arrived and offered several types of water, half of the table drank sparkling and half had still water. Throughout the meal tap water was poured several times into my sparkling water. If you're pretending to be an upscale restaurant, attention to detail is key. I ordered a glass of Rose, the server came back to the table and said they only offered the Rose by the bottle and that the menu must have had a misprint so I was forced to order a more expensive option. I ordered a 2nd glass once the food arrived. When it came out it was much darker in color and sweeter in taste. I asked the server about it and she assured me it was the same wine. Gave me some BS that each bottle can vary from color and taste. She basically lied straight to my face like I wouldnt be able to tell the difference. My friend ordered a salad for her meal and was basically shamed. The server commented you want a salad as your meal?!? I ordered the gnocchi and immediatley the server said, wouldnt you like to try the bolognese? That it the chefs personal favourite? Like, what the? No thank you I'd like what I ordered. The food was ok. Definitely not $50-plus a plate good. The final straw for me was when our friend received a terrible phone a death in the family and had to leave. This place has beautiful architecture and a charming look from the outside, which is why I chose to stop by one night. I had read reviews about the owner being rude, so I made sure I fit the dress code and was extra nice, and the owner was delightful. The music playing, however, was very... interesting. A lot of power love ballads, so be prepared for that. I got the porterhouse special with a caviar baked potato, and I was not as stellar as I had hoped, and was cooked well when I asked for medium. The servers were delightful and playful and attentive to our needs, and I'm sure I could have sent the steak back, but that's never been my style. My date had the lobster Mac and cheese which was also just ok. I have made both at home and felt that I could do it as good, which is the opposite point of going out to eat. Where this place really shined food wise was in the desserts. I would go back several times for just the desserts alone. We had the crisp and the bread pudding, which were both amazing! Then we asked to sit inside since it was a bit chilly outside at 10am. He went in and said "The chef said no open toe shows and need formal attire". I was in a polo shirt and nice levis, my guest was in a nice blouse, dress pants and open toed sandals. Maybe we needed a tuxedo and my guest needed to wear a formal dress for brunch? Even Grand America doesn't require that for brunch. Server didn't seem to know what was on the menu, he went on to mention a few specials that I wanted to see all ingredients on the menu and couldn't seem to find them. Asked him "do we need a different menu?" He came back and apologized that the menu had changed. Doh! This restaurant is set in a charming older home in the historic section of Draper. During the summer, you can dine outdoors, which is quite lovely. The food was incredibly good. So far this wins for best meal in Utah for me. I am a sucker for old houses that have been converted into restaurants so right away I was looking to enjoy myself. It's also one of the few places I've been to in this state that employs a real chef so kudos there!!! Drinks were beautiful and quite good (see photos). My party had a variety of salads and soups (french onion, the Charleston, and the nectarine caprese). All of them were very lite and a great way to start the meal. For the main meal we had the beef bourguignon, the chicken pillard, the filet mignon, and the chicken soup. Let me rave about the chicken soup for a second--yes, it's simple, but wow was it delicious. Just like my mom would make--delicious and homemade. The filet was very good (could have used a little more seasoning for my taste), but presentation and cook was on point. I also tasted the bourguignon and it was good--I wouldn't rate it as my top bourguignon ever, but it was definitely a strong dish. Service was great even though it was a busy Saturday night. I am still not used to the everyone at the table has to show their ID thing if one person does, but again, I'm a weirdo from out of state. Didn't ruin my experience. Pacing of the meal was excellent which is hard to find these days. Finally, shout out for the excellent soundtrack--Natalie Cole as my dinner backdrop is always a win in my book. We ate inside, but the outside area is quite beautiful (we had some type of dust situation today that was making outdoor dining not a good option)...would definitely return and dine out there if possible. Never have we ever .... had a better brunch! Seriously we had so much fun yesterday. We decided we needed a brunch date, calling same day they were so kind to let us make a reservation for 6. She was so sweet about the available times. We sat outside in the green room dining which was so beautiful with all the plants and sunshine. What a great experience we had this morning! Sometimes an enjoyable dining experience comes together by chance (not often, but occasionally). I'm guessing this was by design. All the staff we encountered were pleasant and service-oriented-the hostess, our waiter, and another staff who stopped by to check on us. Our waiter, James, proactively noticed my girls were cold and offered them blankets after lighting the outdoor heater. The menu had a few items I'd like to try, which is unusual. The "Pain Perdu" (french toast) was delicious and came with fresh berries and fresh, dense whipped cream. (That cream was perfect for coffee, so I added a spoonful to my coffee and thoroughly enjoyed it.) My wife is almost as much of a foodie as I am, and she remarked that her "Herbed Baked Eggs" (see pic) may have been the best breakfast dish she's had. I can't speak to it since, sadly, she didn't save me a bite : ( The "Avocado Toast" came with two perfectly poached eggs and a lovely medley of greens. My "Smoked Salmon Platter" was also very good. Of all the food, I only have a single, minor suggestion related to the smoked salmon platter. The lemon came in slices but having a small wedge instead would have been easier to squeeze a few drops from. When the check came, paying was a best-in-class experience. As a back-story, I don't like when wait staff takes my credit card to another room to run it--that is an archaic practice that also requires the waiter to make two trips to the table to cash you out. The Charleston did this right and better than most who try to do it right. The waiter brought my receipt, which had a QR code I could scan to pay. We've all seen that before, but that sometimes requires manually entering or scanning a card. Here, it took only two clicks. I selected a tip amount and then double-clicked the side button to authorize payment, and it was done, along with my having an e-receipt to forward, save, or forget about. Instead of taking the feedback and choosing to learn from it, he arrogantly blames it on the customer and berates them online (often with misspelled words). My spouse and I attempted to have dinner yesterday with my mother who was in town visiting, and our daughter. My spouse and I have been here in the evenings with our daughter many times, always sitting outside. As usual, I put in the request section "high chair, please." We received no phone call informing us this would be an issue, and when we arrived we were told, incredibly rudely by the receptionist/owner, that we could not be seated due to having our child with us. When I asked when that changed, because I can show photos of us, 3 months ago, seated outside with our child during dinner, I was curtly told "7 years ago." The last time we came with our daughter was Thursday, May 11th of this year. My spouse and I have frequented this place, both with our daughter, and for date nights, and I have referred many friends; that will no longer be the case. If they want to change their policy, I have no issues, but do not lie and say 7 years ago when I have photos disproving that statement, and make a phone call when a high chair is requested. After posting this review on OpenTable, the owner sent me a rude, private message accusing me of lying, so I will attach a photo of us with our daughter at dinner on Thursday, May 11, 2023 and reiterate that I fully support an establishment's right to make and change policies. But do not lie and say it has always been the policy when my child and I have been allowed to dine before, and do not be lazy, call your patrons when you see a request on the reservation for a "high chair." I do not know anyone who checks a restaurant's policy every single time they dine when they have dined in the past several times with no issue. I had a good time wanting to visit this restaurant The Charleston in Draper and I decided to do it this past Tuesday August 31st to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my wife. The atmosphere in the outdoor patio is excellent enlivened with an exquisite musical selection and a super relaxing water fountain all this is combined with a variety of succulent entrees, main dishes and desserts that not only fill the shovel with flavors but also make you happy the sight with its delicate presentation. In addition to the careful attention and spectacular service from Marina and the staff in general. For all this and more surely I will return and I highly recommend it. The setting is quaint and charming with a lovely patio setting which we have been wanting to try for a long time. After our visit, we discovered that is the ONLY thing going for them and is their only draw. The service was non-existent and the food even worse. We should of known when there were only 3 other tables occupied and that reservations are always open and available online. We were concerned when we saw two of the tables next to us RETURN their meal and ask for something different. Our experience was no different. To charge $38 for pasta, one might think it was homemade, or at a minimum, cooked properly. Ours was clearly a boxed pasta and WAY over cooked, like eating mashed potatoes. The halibut was shriveled down to an overcooked portion that looked like it was 3oz. The "staple" French Onion Soup for most restaurants for $19 tasted like the Chef poured chicken stock in a crock pot and added onions and rosemary. Little to no flavor. There isn't bread or anything special served with the meal or starter courses. Having been in the restaurant business our whole life, we didn't complain and didn't request anything removed from our bill. The server noticed that nothing was eaten from our pasta so we politely told him it was just overcooked and had no flavor. The Owner/Chef never came to visit the table or ANY table. Instead, he was seen visible laughing it up on the porch and sitting drinking with friends. This makes sense seeing all the other reviews about the restaurant and its management. All around, one of the best examples of a horrible "experience" from start to finish. My meal here was mediocre at best. I appreciated the environment and while the ambiance was suitable for fine dining the music and some of the service was poor. The music was awful; it started with class and then turned into abba, Cher, and a few other artists that ruined the environment for the food. We chose a house salad to make sure we could either compliment the overall aesthetic of the food choices made or point out where we honestly believed it could be better. I've never flip flopped on a restaurant quite like this one. I wore a T-Shirt to our reservation to see how I would be treated. I was drastically underdressed and the host gave me a bit of a look over, but we were seated without much trouble. Our waitress, Kelly, was a 10/10 professional. The crab bake, escargot, salad, steak and desert were all great. The up charge on a whiskey soda is a bit ridiculous, but our other cocktails were nicely done. Overall the ambiance of the Charleston is in rare company along with Francks and Tiburon feeling like an elegant dinner party more than a restaurant. read more
