Char house in San Ramon opened up a café stand at the front of their restaurant called Honey & Fig. The menu looked so amazing! They have everything from Turkish coffee to espresso and matcha drinks with pistachio, passion fruit, and fig butter. It was honestly really hard to pick. I ended up going with their namesake, which was the fig butter matcha. I got this as-is with no changes and it came out to about $8 before tax. The drink looked good and, conceptually, I think it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately the matcha was so weak that you couldn't even taste it. The fig butter was so overwhelmingly and sickeningly sweet that it completely overpowered whatever little matcha taste was in the drink. I had a few sips and just couldn't even finish it because it basically tasted like milk with fig jam and had a weird textural component too, with all the little fig seeds. Overall- maybe their espresso drinks are better, but I don't think the matcha is a good idea here, especially for the price- again, because it's weak and the flavorings are way too strong. I am writing this the same day as I visited this restaurant because I wanted to get my opinions on it written as fresh as possible. I also just woke up from an incredible food coma from eating so much. Was craving something different for breakfast with the family and decided to give this place a try. Came in noticed nobody inside. Usually, that make be a bit nervous, especially then the breakfast spot next door was pretty busy. Still, my family and I decided to give it a try and boy are glad we did. We ordered chicken tikka masala, hyderabadi haleem (a savory goat porridge), hummus topped with shawarma and some naan. For drinks, they were doing a pop up that served matcha, we ordered a banana matcha and a fig matcha, oat milk is an option. Everything smelled delicious and my wife and I fell in love with the food even before we tasted it. The Chicken Tikka Masala was creamy, hat the right spice to it and the chicken was very tender. I never tried the goat porridge before being a fan of Chinese porridge, I decided to be adventurous and very happy that I did. It isnt as complex as the chicken tikka masala in terms of different flavors but through its simplicity, you can really taste the goat and pairs really well with what my wife and I describe as some of the best most buttery naan we have ever had. I never tried hummus topped with shawarma The drinks were on point too, not too sweet. My wife and I are definitely coming back to try out the other items on the menu. Tried the newly opened Char House opened in San Ramon. Went in the middle of the afternoon only two other patrons. I wanted to try a mixture of their eclectic menu so I ordered the following items American fried chicken and fries 4 stars freshly fried all came out piping hot. Nice crispy batter generous portions of fries. Indian goat stew with naan bread. 4 stars very few pieces of goat / bones/ meat. Very good taste the naan was excellent. Babagnounsh 2 stars tasted just ok lemony but the eggplant was blended into a paste the texture made it like eating baby food. Halal ground beef kabobs 3 stars the meat was a bit dry. Comes with saffron rice which was a bit old. But the naan bread was killer. Order at the kiosk, self service.Pluses clean and decent flatware and plates. Plenty of parking in the shopping center. Honestly, I don't know how this place has so many stars? We got the chicken kabobs with naan and rice and the only thing that was decent was the naan. I have never had such dry hard chicken! I didn't even know it was possible to have chicken hard like a rock. It was dry and fibrous and I couldn't even cut properly. I was putting all my force and it was still difficult to cut. I'm wondering if it was just bad luck. Restaurant is order and prepay at the kiosk with self-service water and utensils. A few minutes later your food arrives. Our favorite dish was the butter chicken combo surprisingly. Incredibly soft and juicy chicken and that buttery-tomatoey sauce was divine. The Punjabi Chickpeas side was also excellent - smaller, super crispy chickpeas in an equally rich tomatoey broth. Both the Chicken Malai and Chicken Kebab skewers were good, though the meat was slightly on the dry side and the saffron rice could use a bit more seasoning. This place is super new so we went to go check it out. It seems like they're still a little disorganized, but the food was decent and the service was good. There are also a lot of marinated meats you can buy. We tried the Rangooni Burmese Paratha because I was intrigued there was a callout from a chef. I honestly would not get it again, the paratha was too thick and doughy, though the flavor was good. It came in a to-go container which was weird. I think this is where they are still a bit new and disorganized. We also tried the brisket plate, and it was surprisingly delicious. The flavors are Middle Eastern, so when they ask what sauce you want, I would recommend the garlic sauce, not the BBQ sauce since it is not American style. Speaking of sauces, they give way too little sauce in this tiny cup, I would have liked bigger containers of sauce. But I do recommend the garlic sauce, it was delicious. I really liked that there was ice in the water jugs. You also have to bus your own food after you're done. Another random thing I noticed was the paint job on the wall, it had huge streaks in them in a true DIY fashion. Props to them for cutting costs in the paint job though. I wanted to try a new restaurant and we chose the Char House for lunch. Walking in, it's so new and clean and spacious for the area. We were greeted by a friendly face, and helped us with accommodations. Altogether, the food was tasty. Our first two dishes arrived immediately. The second two dishes arrived an hour later. The second two dishes were wrong. We ordered the ground chicken skewer but the grilled chicken skewer arrived and because the food was so late, he ate it anyway. I requested for no fries, but there were fries on my plate, so I ate around the fries. The sharwmas were a little too salty. The grainy hummus was on the salty/oily side--not the best version I've had. I was a much bigger fan of the Butter Chicken Combo, which came with butter chicken, chana masala, rice, and naan. The chana masala was a mildly spiced chickpea curry, and the butter chicken was an intensely-spiced, creamy tomato curry with tender chunks of boneless chicken. Both of these went nicely with the rice and naan, but the highlight for me was the slightly spicy butter chicken, which had a balance of sweet, savory, acidic flavors. They did give me more veg to replace the potatoes but they have to revisit the recipe. The yellow summer squash was sliced thin and became too soft, almost mushy, for me. The green zucchini disintegrated completely. Prefer my veg to be tender crisp. Also, menu said salad was included but got home and realized none was in the bag. Omission could have been because of the current health warning about lettuce. Big chains like Taco Bell have temporarily pulled lettuce from their menus. Another minor suggestion, program an area into the ordering kiosk for special requests like preferred cooking temps on meat or the potato to veg substitution. Otherwise a yummy takeout meal. Great restaurant in a really convenient spot! I've been there twice now and got a chance to try a lot of the menu. The brisket sandwich and the malai chicken khati roll are my favorite. The malai chicken with rice is good too but the khati roll combines the onions and chutneys better in my opinion. Butter chicken and channa were okay but those NAAN! They were delicious!!! I didn't realize this, but they have a whole back section of the restaurant that's essentially a butcher shop selling halal meats. The bakery items were a wonderful surprise as well, so flavorful and clearly made with care. But what truly stood out were the hummus and baba ganoush. They were silky smooth, creamy, and incredibly fresh. As a two-decade resident of the Bay Area, I do not say this lightly - no other bay area establishment has such fluffy hummus. Must Try! Beef brisket is the best, most tender and succulent as anything I've ever had! Comes with French fries, a roll and some cooked veggies. Atmosphere is super casual, come as you are, kind of restaurant. Woman who served us was very friendly and even offered us a free cup of chai tea. Oh wow! That Chai was so delicious and creamy. Went there for dinner with another couple. We were there at 6:30 and were the only people there. It began to fill up afterwards. We ordered the appetizer of the 4different dips- very tasty, but I think the pita bread was sitting out too long- kinda dry? The rest of the food was great. I had the goat stew combo- it came with sides of chickpeas, rice and pita bread. My husband got the chicken shawarma wrap- came with fries and salad. He really liked it. Our companions had the lamb chops- she said they were tasty and tender, her husband had the falafel wrap- so big he could only eat half. This place is located in a strip mall so there is parking but can get crowded. Service was a little disjointed- they recently opened, so they still need to work out the kinks.
