Came here with a group from work for dinner. This was my first time trying Afghan food. I was a little nervous when we walked in because we were having a heat wave and the restaurant was hot. As soon as we sat down they turned down the air conditioning and it became a very comfortable temperature. We started with Bolani for the table. It is like a calzone filled with leek and potatoes and one order is huge and also delicious. I tried the Qaboli Pallow for my entree since it was Afghanistan's most famous dish and I loved it. Lamb and basmati rice with carrots and raisins was perfection...sweet and savory. I would eat this over and over again. We had the baklava for dessert and it was fresh and warm. I definitely recommend this place. Everything I tried was flavorful.

Stopped by Khyber Pass Kabob at Village Square on an unplanned visit with a friend. The restaurant has a very ethnic and inviting ambiance, and the service was warm and attentive, which made for a pleasant start to the experience. We ordered the chicken kabob plate and a lamb shank to go. The chicken kabob plate was excellent, cooked perfectly, flavorful, and exactly what you would hope for. Unfortunately, the lamb shank was a major disappointment. It was packed in a small container, and they had to make a hole in the lid to fit the bone, which caused the oil to spill out and made it quite messy to handle. More importantly, the dish itself lacked flavor. The sauce included what seemed like overcooked cabbage, and the overall taste was not enjoyable. We ended up not finishing it. Overall, while the kabobs were spot on and the service was great, the inconsistency with the lamb dish took away from the experience. I would return for the kabobs but would likely skip the lamb shank next time.

4.5 stars Khyber Pass Kabob is an understated strip mall restaurant offering bold, colorful plates of Afghani cuisine. We were started with complimentary Afghani flatbread and a simple salad (lettuce, cucumber, red onion, cilantro), but the highlights were the hot main dishes. My favorite was the Mantoo, a plate of Afghani dumplings stuffed with ground beef, onions, and spices, all topped with yogurt, split peas, and more stewed ground beef. The dumplings had a thin, pleasantly chewy skin, and the ground beef filling was deliciously savory and balanced out nicely by the tangy yogurt. Another highlight was the Chapli Kebab, a fried patty of minced sirloin, which was slightly spicy and had deliciously crispy edges. The Lamb Curry was a whole shank (a bit on the tough side) in an oily spiced curry sauce; and the Vegetarian Dish was a sampler of three vegetarian items: sabzi (sautéed spinach), borani badenjan (eggplant with tomatoes topped with a creamy sauce), and dahl lentil soup. Overall, the food here was solid and came at a good value and with friendly service too. The only thing that could have been better was the cleanliness of the dining room, which seemed a bit dated.

I struggled today with today's lunch. Yelp normally leads me to some fantastic, tasty dining experiences but today fell really, really short. We started with Hummus. The bread had arrived much earlier and was nothing special. The hummus lacked flavor a theme throughout the rushed meal. When I say rushed I mean as in no explanation of the menu, a constant "we don't have that during lunch" etc. The Afghan Salad was just lettuce and cucumbers and not at all what the menu described....and to top it all off it was served with some bottled Italian dressing. Super disappointing. We opted to split the Mantoo, suggested by the waitress. It was horrible. Lacked flavor and was drenched in a chilled yogurt sauce that didn't complement the dish one bit. We ordered the khabobs, chicken and lamb. Not an ounce of marinade and lacked seasoning. Major let down. The lamb was touch and over cooked and the chicken had a very odd taste to it. The rice had chili powder in it. Service was pleasant and the owner/waitress could tell we weren't pleased. We barely ate anything and left hungry.

Combination Kabob - chicken and koobidah

I had the bolani, mantoo, and combination kebab of chicken and koobidah. While the mantoo was good, my favorite part was eating the juicy, seasoned kebabs with the buttery, cumin & nutmeg-dusted rice pilaf, and pairing it with the bolani and its accompanying fresh yogurt and sour & spicy chutneys, topped off with some salad to create a delicious wrap in the mouth! The owner was very sweet and nice, and told me about how the chutneys are homemade. The restaurant was beautiful as well, with dark, sultry decor with streams of colorful fabrics hanging throughout a cozy-looking no-shoes seating area. Will definitely be thinking of this restaurant when I get the craving for kebabs again!

We ordered a variety of Kebob dishes TO GO in the authentically decorated restaurant with a warm traditional interior. We asked the gracious owner for recommendations. We had the Chicken Kebob, Beef Tikka Kebob, Chopan Kebob (lamb), Chapli Kebob (ground sirloin with cilantro and scallion) and Challow Beef Kebob (ground sirloin with onion and spice). Each dish came with rice and salad. Happy to support a family run longtime business. Gracious hosts. We loved the flavors. The experience could have been elevated with more sauces accompanying the meats. Would love to return to give this another try for other dishes as well!

This review is for their beef kebab. I ordered takeout and it was ready within 15 minutes. The service was great - the lady who was helping us at the cashier was super friendly and we had a nice chat. Beef Kebab - a great portion of meat and they weren't shy with their rice! It was filled to the top of the box. it was delicious! It came with side of bread, dipping sauce, and salad. I was extremely satisfied with the flavor and dish!!

Decided to eat here after seeing all the amazing yelp reviews. My friend and I came by Sunday evening around 6 pm and it wasn't crowded at all. It's a small restaurant, but they have a beautiful elevated area for large groups with colorful curtains on top. The owner started us off with some complementary bread fresh out of the oven and salad. We also shared the borani kadoo appetizer ($7.95), which is pumpkin sauteed with tomatoes and topped with a yogurt-based sauce. I liked the pumpkin but found the yogurt a bit too tangy. For my entree, I got the combination kabob with lamb fillet and beef for $19.95. It comes with a generous portion of flavored basmati rice. I liked the lamb slightly more than the beef but both were dry. My friend got the chicken kabob ($17.95) and it was good. Liked it more than the lamb and beef.

The food was delicious. Flavorful with lots of interesting spices. I got my food to go and the containers weren't the best. They became very soft because of the hot steam and most of the curry ended up in the bag instead.

One of the best authentic Afghan food in the East Bay. We came by here during weekend for lunch and ordered the mantoo, bolani, combination kabob , quabili pallow and for dessert the firni. Everything we order were delicious. We We're full and have to take the rest to go. Overall dining experience is excellent, Food is really great, owner is super nice and service is excellent. I'll come back again to try the other dishes on the menu.

We had a large group stop by after a class and the team was able to seat us pretty quickly. We were thrilled to get to sit in a beautiful large group section with a low table and seating. It was such an awesome plus and super appreciated since we hadn't made a reservation or anything. The staff were all super friendly and offered some great alternatives for items they were out of. We grabbed an assortment of starters, mains, and grabbed some dessert at the end. Everything was delicious. The portions were generous and I went home with leftovers even though I came in super hungry. Everything tasted fantastic. My favorite was the Mantoo, with the Bolani as a close second. I'd come back just for that!

We had borani kaddu - butternut squash with yogurt and garlic sauce. This was a good alternative to the common borani banjan. the texture was perfect, not overly cooked, went well with the warm bread. perfect for vegetarians. Our vegetarian companion had borani banjan - smoked, grilled eggplants in the tomato yogurt sauce similar to the appetizer we had. But served with rice and salad and green chick pea side provided enough serving. it was delicious - they have an option to make it vegan as well. Now quabili palaw was the star! massive size of lamb shank, well seasoned, well cooked, perfectly seasoned. The rice was fantastic with enough sweet carrots and raisins. Will be back just for this! Shami kabob came with two kababs (picture only one as our little one already sneaked one!). Kababs were juicy, perfectly spiced, with enough rice and salad. Between quabili palaw and shami kabob was enough for two adults and hungry child... Khoshmazeh!

There a some great places for Afghan food in Fremont. This is one of our favorites. We like this…read moreone better than that really popular Afghan take out place by the train station because we find the chicken to be more moist and tender here. Plus, they seem to have better availability when you order different types of bolani. The staff here are really nice, even though they may not talk much. We notice that there seem to be lots of regulars here and that the staff greets them warmly. On our most recent visit, we ordered the chicken kabobs and the beef kabobs. They are both really good. We also ordered the Mantoo dumplings and the eggplant borani and a squash bolani. The meal comes with complimentary bread. This is a small restaurant, so get there early. They have a small parking lot which is often full. But you can usually park in the street.

The restaurant is small but enough room for few families. The owner and staff are really nice, they offered us a complementary butternut sauash bolani for us to try when we normally take potato bolani. We got variety of dishes like chicken/chapli, beef/chicken, beef/chapli etc. we were happy to see salaam Cola instead of coke/pepsi etc. the bolani was amazing and very fresh and crispy which is nicer than a softer texture. The rice came brown seasoned, but it was a bit lighter in color and flavor, would suggest try to make it more seasoned/heavier on flavor. The chapli was really good and had a peshawri like taste and texture. The chicken today pieces were large in size and color was just right. For some reason the chicken flavor didnt get all the way through. The ambiance was nice and it is a good addition to fremonts Afghan restaurants
