    Weekend buffet.
    Saurabh S.

Went for their weekend buffet. Every thing was super tasty. Rui kalia, mangsho, Kolkata style mutton biryani, reshmi Kabab, chicken 65, daal and many other items formed a perfect weekend buffet. Service was attentive. Place was quite clean. It's one of the best Indian buffets I have had in Bay Area. Will come back for more.

Masala Ferry opened recently where Hyderabad Biryani House once was. Interior similar with a change of paint from gray to light brown, less wall art, and a change of tables/chairs. Service was quick, punctual, courteous. Decided what to order with help from host/owner. Food came in 20ish minutes as it was cooked to order from scratch, not scoop ready. offerings (Bengali/Andhra, India): appetizers, curries, thalis, rice. Sips: chai (comped) self service -not bold, nuanced cardamon& milk with black tea. Bites: Bengali style thali (14): chutney, Dahl, potato curry. Fried fish, dessert. Basmatic rice. -Sweet chutney-to mix with rice & entree_ -Gulab jamun-sweet traditional Indian dessert: fried dough soaked in sweet syrups. Yum. -Potato & poppy curry: slightly sweet with ginger, garlic, tumeric, cumin, tomato, mustard oil.. -basmatic rice: fresh, fluffy, individual grains-ideal for soaking up curries, sauces -sona moong Dahl-mixture of premium lentils simmered with herbs & spices..vegeterian. -2 fried fish: small Indian fish from subcontinent. Quickly frozen after being caught. Bones not too small. Flesh flaky, tender, moist. 4.5 stars Worthy! Quality: very good, cooked to order. Quantity: reasonable. Note: Bengali food less spicy than other Indian regions.

Paneer Tikka Masala with Garlic Naan & Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani

My family and I love the food at Masala Ferry! You get some of the best desi, specially South Indian/Bengali food at such reasonable and affordable prices. I do want to preface that while the service is quite slow here and it's mostly self serve, the owner seems to really care and puts all his efforts in the quality of the meal so this as well as ambiance can be totally waived in place of stellar food. My parents love the Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani and I absolutely love the paneer tikka masala here. You can tell they've let everything marinate for a while and the spices and flavor really come out of everything so well. On top of that, we never end up spending more than $60 here so it's such deal of a restaurant in the East Bay Tri Valley area. I'm looking forward to coming back many more times in the future with more friends and family who love a good quality, inexpensive desi meal.

Kolkata Style Mutton Biryani / Tandoori Chicken

Tried this new place in San Ramon with to go order for Kolkata style mutton biryani and tandoori chicken and the food was fantastic!! Specially the biryani was very tasty and mildly spicy and the mutton was extremely soft! They have other Kolkata and andhra dishes plan to try next time!!

Andhra Style and Bengali Style Thalis
    David K.

Masala Ferry is a humble restaurant offering a short but flavorful menu of regional Indian cuisine from Bengal in the northeast and Andhra Pradesh in the south. The thalis were the perfect menu item to order to sample a bunch of different dishes in one complete meal. The Andhra Style Thali came in a veg and non-veg version--the veg thali featured butter paneer (paneer cubes in a creamy tomato curry), dal, raita, rice, a buttered roti flatbread, pickle, and gulab jamun; while the non-veg thali came with a choice of meat curries (I had the bone-in Andhra goat and the dark meat Gongura chicken), along with the same sides and accompaniments. The Bengali Style Thali also came in a veg and non-veg version, with the veg featuring Alu Posto (potato cubes in a creamy spiced poppy seed paste), Chanar Dalna (paneer balls and diced potatoes in a mild curry), Sona Moong Daal, rice, pickle, and gulab jamun. Finally, the non-veg Bengali thali came with a choice of two meat curries (I had the bone-in Kohsa Style Mutton and the Rui Kalia, a curry with boney fish), along with the other sides. Overall, everything here was nicely spiced, fresh, and delicious. I especially liked both the veg and non-veg Bengali thalis (which featured hard-to-find regional Indian flavors), but everything came at a good value, and the service was super friendly too!

The restaurant has two sides: the dining area and a full-bar area. It's very clean and nicely decorated. The tables are spaced well, probably to give room for the robots. The menu is authentic Indian from a region that I am not familiar with. They had mutton, goat and fish options. I didn't see the usual Indian fare so I was in unfamiliar territory and at a loss as to what to order. Thank goodness for Mohan. He was our server who is not only very polite but professional and charming. He helped up with his recommendations and warned us about spice level. Even if a dish had zero peppers, he said "It's Indian mild." Hahaha! So funny. I very much appreciated that warning. We ordered: GOBI MANCHURIAN - (1 pepper) Good appetizer especially if you want a heartier vegetable dish. Nice flavor. CHICKEN RAJHANS - (0 peppers) Very similar to Butter Chicken. Creamy tomato gravy, a little sweetness. For having zero peppers, it had a kick. Mohan said next time I can ask for it even milder. SUKHA CHICKEN - (1 pepper) Very flavorful. My husband preferred this chicken dish over the Rajhans. This was spicier for me. PALAK PANEER - (1 pepper) Big chunks of cheese and the spinach sauce was very creamy. This was delicious with their naan. They offered us 2 kinds of naan: the traditional one and another one that was rice-based. That was interesting. It was chewier. I liked it! As you can see, I didn't order anything over 1 pepper. If you like spicy, try them out because they went up to 4 peppers! I think my mouth with explode at that spice level! It was also nice that the owner or manager walked around and spoke to the customers. They gave us a complimentary dessert which was a sesame ball with peanut and some kind of spice that they give to friends during an Indian celebration (which was the night we ate here.) He was explaining this tradition to us which was quite fascinating. Would love to come back and try more dishes like the fish.

Before leaving, we had already stacked and put away our plates neatly near the trash area. As we were walking out during a busy lunch rush, one of the staff members loudly called out to me, "Madam, can you clean up your table?" in front of other customers waiting in line. It was extremely embarrassing, so I immediately went back, wiped down the table myself, and left. A few moments later, I returned to clarify what exactly was expected from customers. During that conversation, the same employee admitted that he had mistaken us for another group that had not cleaned their table. While I appreciate the clarification, the situation should never have been handled by publicly calling out and embarrassing customers at the exit. Even if a customer genuinely forgets to clean up, there are far more respectful and professional ways to address it. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated concern. On multiple visits, we have noticed that the overall customer service feels unfriendly and dismissive. Customers often seem ignored, especially those who come in for something small like coffee. The atmosphere can come across as hostile rather than welcoming. We enjoy the food, but experiences like this make it difficult to feel comfortable returning.
