Luckily I went with a friend who recommended certain dishes because the menu is quite extensive and overwhelming. We didn't get to order this as our food alone was already so filling, so plan to go in a group if you want to try more items. Their sambar was delicious and comforting. I appreciated that the chutneys added great flavor too! I believe we were given coconut peanut chutney, ginger tamarind chutney, and tomato chutney. Better than Idly Express. I know it's not a fair comparison We ordered benne karam masala dosa and veggies cheese corn sandwich. They took 30 minutes to prep the food. When the food came, they were piping hot. It was worth the wait from someone who does not eat Indian food everyday. The dosa was too spicy for me. Even my Indian friend who loves spicy food couldn't handle it, she was sweating bullets hahaha. I would have finished it if it were not too spicy. The crepe was thick enough to allow scooping the filling and dip in sambar and chutney. The filling was creamy. The sandwich was good. I devoured it in no time! I dipped it in ketchup too. Oh it was a good flavor. The bread was toasted just right, toasty but not something that scratched your gums as you bite into it. AND not greasy! We've generally liked this place for its simple, comforting South Indian food, which is why this recent experience was disappointing. We ordered through DoorDash and included a few snacks, including Mirchi Bajji. Unfortunately, the quality of the food we received made us wonder whether enough care was taken while preparing the order. Highly recommend coming for the food! They have a large menu of different kinds of dosas and appetizers to try! We loved every single thing we ordered and will be coming back again for more. On my visit, the daily assortment included a welcome drink of badam milk (made of almonds and saffron); a sweet of ragi halwa (finger millet flour, ghee, and nuts); a stuffed mirchi (green pepper breaded with chickpea flour batter topped with onions/herbs/peanuts); potato fry; a spicy capsicum curry; tomato rice; a thick thotakura dal (lentils with amaranth); kothimera (coriander) rasam (a strong peppery soup); and palakura pachadi (a salty, spicy chutney of spinach and chilies). Every item was distinct in flavor and delicious in its own way, and the fan-shaped thali was rounded out with a few staples: a generous portion of white rice, curd rice, a puffy fried poori, crunchy cylindrical fryums, and sweet paan (an aromatic breathfreshener made of betel leaf). This was truly a feast for the senses, which came with generous portions at an unbelievable value! In addition to their daily thali, this casual South Indian vegetarian restaurant also offered a huge variety of tiffins, including a few fusion specials. The Beetroot Dosa was a thin, crispy crepe with beets mixed into the fermented rice and lentil batter, giving the dosa a unique purple color. The dosa was smeared with a spicy chutney on the inside and had a filling of chopped onions and tomatoes, but my favorite part was the accompaniments. The thali is an amazing value. It reminds me of that old George Foreman commercial: "you won't pay a lot, but you'll get a lot". For the price it would be understandable if they cheaped out on the amount or quality of the dishes, but they totally didn't. Just recently they upped their game by moving to a much nicer location and switching to real metal plates instead of disposable ones. Absolutely loved the food here that we had last night. We tried a little bit of everything so our table was full of food. My favorites were the ghee idly and onion masala dosa. Everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. I definitely will be back again. The place is small and was packed with people for a Saturday night but we were able to find a table right away. You order at the counter and get a seat and they bring the food to you. One other positive is it's located right next to a Tesla charging station so you can charge and eat at the same time. read more

We went to Amrutha Vilas over the weekend (our second visit to this restaurant). The first time we went, it took them over 40 minutes to get us our meal even though it was in the morning and there were just a handful of other patrons. We assumed that they were short-staffed that day - the food itself was okay - no real complaints. Well, on this second trip, they told us that it would be a minimum of 45 minutes to get our order - and the fastest item on the menu (idli) would take 30-35 minutes. What surprised me was that we wanted to order their thaali - it was lunch time. I would have assumed that that would come out faster since the menu on it is pre-defined - which means that they should have planned for it. So we ended up going elsewhere. The reason for the 2 stars is cause they at least told us before we sat down about the delays. So kudos for that. I think their service is just not up to par. read more

Went there on 07/11/25 for the 6th time and now perhaps the last time. Food was extremely disappointing, either was bland or overpowering with salt. Usually this place is run by a lady who seems to be the owner but today she wasn't there and we could clearly see the difference in taste and quality. We gave the feedback to the lady wearing glasses, she acknowledged the food had overpowering amount of salt but still did nothing. We couldn't eat the food and had to leave. The masala vada on the menu attracted me to this place, and we ended up having our entire dinner here. Bombay jini dosa was one of their specialty dosas and it was a fusion of chat ingredients glazed on a crispy dosa like sev, raw onions cilantro, imli chutney. Different, interesting and surprisingly delightful. Next time I'd probably ask them to avoid adding imli chutney as I don't prefer sweetness in dosa. First time at this restaurant. Decent food: Good idli, very good pongal and tasty ragi rava masala dosai. Unlike many other places, the masala had spice and flavor. The spiced buttermilk was very nice too. The restaurant, plates, silverware all were clean. Things they could think about and improve on: 1) The coconut chutney had peanuts. Not my thing at all , I prefer my coconut chutney unadulterated. But peanut is also a major allergen for a lot of kids in the US and it would be good to indicate somewhere that the chutney has peanuts. Most people from South India are used to a plain coconut chutney, so it might be worthwhile adding one to the menu as well. 2) Service was super slow today. It took 40 mins to get our plate of idli, vadai, pongal. They forewarned us that it would take 20-25 mins but it took double that time and they forgot about us completely. Service is the worst i can every expect. My family with 2 kids were made to wait for 30 mins to get a table and once we got a table were told that a thali or any food will take 45 mins at least. I've recently visited this place multiple times during lunch, and I feel it urgently requires another health inspection in its kitchen. Officials should investigate how long they store cooked food before reheating and serving it. If you try their Thali, you'll likely find your stomach struggling to digest it for an entire day,sometimes even up to 8 hours afterward. The food tastes old and stale. Additionally, the cleaning solution they use to wipe tables while customers are eating has an overwhelmingly strong soapy odor, which is very off-putting. There needs to be a way to prompt a thorough health inspection of their kitchen. I won't be returning. The Thali is overpriced and mostly consists of rice with a few subpar items to fill the plate. The Tamarind rice is just white rice mixed with a bland powder, and it tastes terrible. It's surprising how a business with such poor ethics and food quality manages to survive. I haven't tried their Dosa or other dishes, so I hope those are better and that people enjoy them. My personal favorite choice here is Bonda, they are soo crispy, perfect shape and size. The texture and flavor is simply irresistible. We recently visited Amrutha Vilas in San Ramon for lunch with a group of 9 people. We ordered 8 thalis, each priced at $19 per head, and the total bill came to around $190. The food, unfortunately, was average at best, which has been our experience most times here. This visit, however, stood out for the portion size and service. Each thali came with one dal, one curry, one semi-gravy, one rasam, a very small portion of flavored rice, and rose milk, which was honestly quite bad. For the price, the quantity felt very underwhelming. More concerning was that two of the curries were served cold. When we brought this to the hostess's attention, instead of an apology or acknowledgment, we were simply asked if the food could be reheated. Thalis are expected to be fresh and hot, not something that needs reheating after being served. I didn't want to post a review, but given the service and overall experience, I felt it was necessary to share honest feedback. After a long drive, being genuinely hungry, and paying this amount, this felt like a poor decision on my end. I respect food and don't mind paying when quality, quantity, and service align. I may try this place once more, but if the same experience repeats, that would be my last visit, and I wouldn't encourage my friends or family to visit. read more

Came here for the first time after they got renovated. Ordered Thali and a triple combo on a Saturday afternoon. Good atmosphere, ambience, huge screen and warm feeling overall. It was a good 25+ minutes wait for the food to arrive. One would expect food to be hot enough, but it was luke warm. I liked their vada and sambhar. Mysore masala in my opinion should have stuffing different than the regular Masala dosa but it tasted the same almost. Idli, looked like it came from a microwave warm. Freshly steamed idlis have a different texture and smell and I am sure you would know what iam talking about. Thali- we were first impressed with all steel cutlery pictures but it seems now they changed it to disposables. That's ok, I can understand too much of dish cleaning. But the food itself was very mediocre. Couple of gravy based south Indian curries were too salty and lacked flavors. Even tomato rasam didn't meet the expectations. Cost was all very reasonable. Now comes cherry on the top. I haven't seen a smaller Pan ever. They charged 3.5$ for the tiniest (and I mean it) pan ever. Checkout some Fremont restaurants - their plans are triple the size with even smaller price tag. One mind says not to come again but would like to give them a one more chance, so hoping to update the current rating. read more

The restaurant specializes in vegetarian Dosas. We tried a couple of their appetizers. The round Mysore Bonda balls were like some I found in India. The Masala dosa was huge. It clearly was bigger than the plate. The 8.5"x11" menu is in the upper right corner to give you size perspective. Staff was extremely helpful, willingly explained items on the menu and graciously accepted my lack of hearing the Indian dialect. The restaurant was in the old chocolate place. They did a much better job selling the restaurant space. While we were eating, several other Indian customers showed up to vouch for the Indian quality. We strongly recommend you give them a try. I'm glad I gave Amrutha Vilas a try. It's quite different from the usual Indian food I've had around the Bay. I am by no means a regular when it comes to Indian food, so this is all new to me. But what caught by eye on Yelp was the Dosas here. Amrutha Vilas seems to be a really popular place too because this restaurant was popping when we got there. This place was a quick service type of restaurant. You place your order at the counter, they give you a table number if you're dining in, and bring you your order when it's ready. Otherwise, all other things, such as water and utensils, are self-service. We took a while with the menu because we had absolutely no idea what anything was, but we ended up asking for recommendations at the counter and Chitti Punugulu was recommended to us as new customers to the restaurant. Originally, I was interested in the Stuffed Mirchi, but we were told it would be very spicy. I'm glad they mentioned this because I'm not sure I would be able to tolerate spice I'm not use to. Aside from that, we of, course, got the Onion Rava Dosa (the most popular item on Yelp), and a 2 Idly, 1 Vada, Pongal Combo. We were told the Dosa would probably take 15-20 mins to make. Although this seemed like a fast-paced, quick-meal style of restaurant, service was friendly. Some of the employees came to check on us throughout our dining experience. I asked about the chutneys that were given to us, and we were told that of the three chutneys, one was ginger, one was peanut, and the other was tomato based. All of them were really flavorful. Our food probably took around 10-15 mins to come out. The Chitti Punugulu came out first, and these are like little donut nuggets. Fried, but not that oily. Kind of light and has a nice, soft chew to it. You get a lot of these donut nuggets on one plate too. I like how bite-size they are. They were fun to eat, haha. Next and my favorite was the Onion Rava Dosa. I don't think I've ever tried Dosa before, but they're similar to crepe, but savory. Very thin, crispy, light, and flavorful. Paired really well with the lentil sambar. Finally, the 2 Idly, 1 Vada, Pongal - of the three, my favorite was the Vada. It's shaped like a donut, but slightly denser in texture. Fried, but it wasn't too oily. The Pongal was interesting. I would probably describe it as a thick porridge consistency, but it's made with potatoes. There's some peanuts and other ingredients sprinkled in the mix. Lastly, the Idly - this was plain, but dipped with the chutney, it soaks up a lot of flavor. All in all, we enjoyed our experience here. I'm not that familiar with Indian cuisine, but I can say that of the few experiences I've had of Indian food, this would be one of the top. I would recommend this to people who are looking for a different, more unique sort of experience with Indian cuisine.
