I wasn't a fan of the ube fried crepe (it's not on the menu, but you can still order it) or the thai crepe. The mushroom, cheese, and spinach was pretty decent as well. Earlier this month, I happened to be at the Blackhawk Plaza for a sports card & hobby trade show. In a sea of store closures, it was nice to see this little shop open and ready to serve customers. A cute cafe near the Blackhawk Museum! I went here after visiting the Blackhawk Museum and it's a small cafe with many crepe options. It was crowded when we went but they tried adding more tables and seats so people didn't need to wait. I thought this was nice, but it goes to the food waiting time and little service. We also got sitted outside next to a gym with their door opened, so we were literally seeing people exercise as we chatted and ate and vice versa for the people working out. We got their thai style street food crepe and Shibuya honey toast. I'm usually not a savory crepe person, but their thai style street food crepe was really delicious with a nice spicy flavor. There's pork floss and different sauces in it. The Shibuya honey toast was soft and you get 2 scoops of ice cream. We chose vanilla and chocolate. There are also different fruit pieces and everything tastes great together. For drinks, they ran out of the blue miracle, so we got all 3 of their soda. The sodas were good and refreshing. After exploring nearby brunches, I stumbled upon Brown Butter -- and boy was I glad I did. To explain this restaurant, it is quaint, has lots of plants, cutesy fonts and images, and amazing food and drinks! It was packed when we got there, we sat down in the back but were told to put our names on a waiting list. They sat a pair of walkins that came after us and after apologizing they sat us in the same place we sat before. After waiting for an hour in a half we got our food. It was an uncertain day regarding rain, so the outdoor seating was not set-up. My friend and I stumbled upon Brown Butter with our two dogs, and we were readily greeted by a very kind gentleman, who with great immediacy got us chairs and wiped off the table of its raindrops. The menu had something for everyone, along with unusual beverage offerings of a hot Thai tea latte and lychee ice tea, with an actual lychee, not just flavoring. The only critique was the amount of ice in the drink, which was more than she desired but probably necessary to actually make it iced. My friend was able to get a substantial meal of a fabulously presented and delicious avocado toast, topped with boiled egg slices and a pleasant sauce with a slight kick, while I was able to get a house salad that included artichoke hearts, which is incredibly generous for a "house salad". Everything was scrumptious! Blackhawk Plaza was once a vibrant complex. Sadly, post-pandemic, most storefronts are now vacant, and the management has allowed for the once-gorgeous water setting to go green, although there are signs that they are aware of its unsightliness and working on the filtration system. Where Brown Butter is located is on an edge, overlooking the parking lot of a former Century Theaters, so customers will not be bothered by the unkept body of water. Please patron this business, as it was brave of the owners to roll the dice and complete against an existing Starbucks in the same parking lot as Draeger's. There is no competition there, as Brown Butter is independently-owned, takes pride in what they serve, and appears to be more concerned with a positive experience for their customers as opposed to a conglomerate's bottom-line. read more
