Well, there's the problem. * * * I had an outstanding chicken sandwich that deserves to be put on a pedestal in the Palace of Honor for Chicken Sandwiches. (I have never figured out where the Palace of Honor for Chicken Sandwiches actually is. But once all the COVID travel restrictions are limited I definitely want to go.) The Cavalier Chicken Sandwich gives you an enormous chicken breast that protrudes past the end of the roll on both sides. This thing belongs in a hoagie roll rather than a plain old roll. It is deeply immersed in barbecue sauce AND mustard AND spice AND sugar. But the critical advanced technology here is the mustard part and grilling that chicken so the whole lot caramelizes. There is no chicken sandwich like this in Austin --- and I would eat this all day every day if I could. My wife had a first rate carrot hummus. Note to hummus fans ... Carrots make things sweet. Indian dessert makers know this but vegans and vegetarians tend to forget this. There are times when carrot anything is on the side of decadence rather than self-sacrificing dietary nobility. I will take decadence in a hummus any day of the week. So I was happy - and so was the missus. The chips the hummus were served with were stale. Actually make that very stale. A narrow row of high stools facing Webberville Road (No Thrills View # 1) A concrete patio of a few tables and a TV with a baseball game on the side (No Thrills View #2) And a parking lot facing on some supplies for the bar and the rear end of some not particularly beautiful yuppie houses (No Thrills View #3). I like my bars with atmosphere if they are inside and views if they are outside. (I can compromise if they have something spectacular on TV or on the Sound System). I like bars that have soul. What bars have soul? Small spot tucked away in a side street with creole/southern style food and plenty of different drinks. Stopped in on a Friday night and was able to grab a table at the patio. Food and drinks must be ordered at the bar and your name will be called over the loud speaker when your food is ready. Food is also picked up at the bar. I went with the shrimp po boy and a side of Cajun fries. The po boy was delicious. There was just enough food to get you going if you're planning on staying out late but you'll most likely need something later on the evening. Masks are required. The food was good. I can't give it a 5 star because I came there specifically for the deviled eggs and the grits and shrimp. They were out of the deviled eggs and I was told it would be an hour before the eggs were ready. I didn't realize that the grits are only served for brunch (11am-3pm). The staff was amazing! They were all very friendly and patient with me as I tried to find something else to eat once my disappointment of not getting the eggs/grits was over. I'm sure they have wine, too, but I'd prob save that for somewhere else. Tables inside and out (on the street and in the back (exposed) and side (covered) patios. Order at the counter and also pick up at same counter. Love that one of the bartenders uses a fun voice to call your name. The spicy beet margarita was refreshing but subtle in both alcohol and beet flavoring, so a nice starter option, especially on a hot day. They have food (creole/southern bites - and I've heard is a great spot for a casual brunch), so if you work up an appetite, no need to uproot to another establishment to fill that craving. read more

I love the idea of dive bar bunch and the food, drinks and ambiance at The Cavalier are solid in every way. I had the Biscuits and Jam and Shrimp and Grits, both were spot on and I really enjoyed the choice of yellow grits instead of the more common white grits. The music while I was here was really solid and pleasing. I was a little impressed because I don't think a single song came on while I was there that I wouldn't find in my own play list now and then. I've also been to The Cavalier at night and enjoy the late night bar vibe they get here too. Cheap drinks, friendly employees and nice customers .. what more could ya ask for. Sooooo if you want a cool brunch with a bar vibe for sure go here for brunch on Sunday. If you want a nicer divey bar with cheap drinks pop in after dark. Ok maybe I was influenced by the absolutely gorgeous weather on the patio, but truly enjoyed a 10/10 experience at the Cavalier. It's got an approachable yet dive-y feel, where I imagine there are lots of regulars and familiar faces. The real star here is the burger: I feel like I'm giving up a big secret by sharing that this is hands down one of the best burgers in town. Super juicy but crispy, with mayo and fresh veggies, and the Cajun sparkle dusted tots to boot?!!! Are you kidding me? I've been here with friends for drinks and the pool table but who knew the Cavalier had bomb crawfish! They had a Crawfish Boil this past weekend with a Dj and extra tables out back. This was my first time having whole crawfish and I'm glad I had it here; there was so much robust flavor going on with not only the crawfish, but the corn, potatoes and sausage. All of my drinks were on point and definitely got the job done! The staff were awesome and one of the owners made sure he went around to make sure that we were satisfied and even gave free beers to those that ordered crawfish! They do a drag show on certain days of the month and I happened to come at the right time! The show was AMAZING. So much fun and so talented. I mad margaritas and a basic B breakfast. This is such a cool little neighborhood bar. The inside is not very large, but they have a larger outdoor patio area. The drinks are delicious!! I had a frozen vodka drink that was perfect. I ordered the chicken strips and fries. They were both a little spicy but still very good. The garlic kale was a no go for me. I was really hoping that I would like it more, and was pretty disappointed. They do have a parking area in the back which is nice. All in all a pretty cool little spot to check out. read more

Serious food, neighborhood vibes. Other adjectives are "Cajun," "divey," and "hipster." They're a family-run business, and the regular changes to their menu reflect the enjoyment they clearly get from offering new things. Tonight I got the Shrimp Roll - cold shrimp dressed in mayo with a bit of Cajun seasoning, on a toasted buttery roll. It wasn't too spicy. Next time I'd ask if they can prepare it with less mayo, but it was still a winner. I also got the happy hour Deviled Eggs. The filling is mild, but they're served with a drizzle of a spicy sauce, and a surprise filling of some sort of relish or gardineria hidden below the main yolk filling. On the side I also tried their tater tots and slaw, which were pretty average. Seating is a little limited. There's a pool table inside. Music was a little loud. yesterday i wanted a break from my usual lunch options... so we i landed on the cavalier. it's located in a cool area in east atx that offers a handful of other bars to try out. it's right on the corner & there is plenty pf parking... something i appreciates about this area. our menu/ shrimp po boy cauliflower wings fries deviled eggs black eyed peas cocktails/ old fashioned whiskey smash everything was pretty tasty except for the black eyed peas. i was very confident in them because one does not put black eyed peas on a small menu if one is not going to kill it! but alas, they were very lackluster. i took one bite and pushed them to the side. they need a seasoning revision... because they could be great... if the cooks give thém a chance to be. i am always in search of good craft cocktails, and the bartender did not disappoint. funny story, there was a pug birthday party going on while i was there and they were running all around with their cute little ugly faces. read more

Tender chicken and one of the best waffles I've ever had, seriously. The Cavalier is a cool, relaxed atmosphere that has a patio and is dog friendly both indoors and outside. What killed it for me, unfortunately, was the sticky substance that appeared to be on all the tables. Maybe it was just the day we visited, but I'm from out of town so I won't have the opportunity to revisit and try again. I hate to do this, since the employees were mostly friendly and the ambiance is pretty rad. But the food was significantly below par. Great drink specials, sweetly tangy lemonade, but who cares about that, right? Mimosas were only $3. Delicious and revitalizing! *Poutine (add Avocado) was not poutine at all. My husband and I have been wanting to try this place for a long time but it's always slammed! We went on a Saturday for happy hour (3pm-7pm daily) and it was such a gem.
