At first, walking down the alley in downtown Bend, I honestly was not sure what we were about to find. Then we started seeing little fire pit pods, heated huts, glowing candles, and people tucked away having cocktails. It instantly felt cool without trying too hard. Walking into San Simón felt like stepping into some funky speakeasy hidden in plain sight. Dark lighting, moody atmosphere, David Bowie playing in the background, wild artwork on the walls that makes you stop and stare for a second. Just a great vibe all around. The kind of place where you sit down and immediately relax into the evening. The cocktails were excellent. Not overdone, not syrupy, just really balanced and well made. One of our favorites was the "Some Positive Feedback," which came with this sugar rim that looked awesome and added just enough sweetness without overpowering the drink. Bright citrus flavor, refreshing, smooth, and dangerously easy to drink. Then we asked the bartender if they could just make us something off the cuff. We said vodka, lemon and lime forward, not too sweet, maybe a little spice. They absolutely nailed it. Crisp, refreshing, layered citrus flavor with just enough heat on the back end to keep it interesting. Honestly one of those cocktails where everybody at the table takes a sip and immediately goes, "Oh wow." As a bourbon guy, I was also pleasantly surprised with the whiskey selection. The bartender recommended Stafford's Reserve, an Oregon bourbon, and I am glad I listened. Smooth, approachable, a little sweet up front with some spice on the finish. Easy sipping bourbon that fit the whole vibe of the place perfectly. What really made the night though was the staff. Everybody was friendly in that genuine way where you feel welcomed instead of "served." By the end of the night it honestly felt like we had been there before, even though it was our first visit. The outdoor setup deserves some love too. Bend cooled down at night, but the fire pits and heaters kept everything comfortable. We could have easily stayed another couple hours just hanging out. Pricing felt fair for the quality of drinks and atmosphere. This is not a dive bar pretending to be fancy. It is a genuinely cool cocktail spot that knows exactly what it is. If you are in Bend and enjoy craft cocktails, bourbon, cool music, quirky atmosphere, and places with personality, go find San Simón. Half the fun is finding it tucked down the alley in the first place.

First, like any nice steak house, this place sell ahi tuna rare. As any place should. Except, unlike 99% of the steakhouses on earth, they actually know enough about the dish to make it delicious. I can't count how many times I've had poor tuna tar-tar/sashimi/poke/crudo.... If you don't know how to treat a dish there is a simple alternative DON"T MAKE IT. My father and I were a little bit in awe of how nicely it looked, but how large and frankly thought out the simple presentation was. This is not an exaggeration. Think hard about the times a fine restaurant has screwed up a raw presentation, it will baffle you a little bit if you let it. My pork was the best I've had in my memory of thinking about pork. I was sooo pleased. It was over 2" thick, and I was told they were going to serve it to me med rare unless asked otherwise. When my meal came I knew all things would be well. The polenta had to go through three cooking phases and all were perfectly accomplished; and my dad just looked at my meal and said, "well, you ordered a home run." When another guest can see a meal accomplishment like that, the restaurant and chef need to know they created a home run. read more

My wife and were told after 84 minutes that another reservation was waiting for my table as we tried to order dessert. Our bill for two of us at the time was over $330. In their defense we did show up 6 minutes late and the food was good. I contacted the owner directly and they informed me that they allow 90 minutes for table reservations on busy nights and we were late so they shouldn't have accommodated me at all, not the answer I was expecting. I have never been told that I need to finish up because another table was waiting at ANY restaurant let alone a supposed fine dining place. So if you want a real fine dining experience where you can relax and enjoy your several hundred dollar dinner choose another one of Bends fine restaurants. read more

So, I went to this place and it was a bit of a mixed bag. On the plus side, their homemade taro chips with the tuna Poké starter were totally awesome. And the service was really good too - the staff were super friendly and attentive. But, the bread they gave us wasn't all that great. And as for the main courses, I had a burger that was just average, nothing special. You can probably find the same thing in loads of other places. My girlfriend ordered the harvest pasta which sounded amazing on the menu, but it was a total letdown. It was just a big plate of noodles with a tiny bit of watery sauce. We're not picky eaters, but this was a disaster. Overall, I wouldn't really recommend this place based on our experience. read more

There a few things to like at The Blacksmith but the New York strip I was served last night isn't one of them. It was not fit for human consumption. It was so tough as to be impossible to eat. I highly recommend eating either by the windows or outside if weather permits. Now onto everything else. Firstly, when we got there they said that it would take half an hour to be seated. That's fine, we were a table of 4, so I understand if they needed space to open up before we could be seated. The disappointing part is that when we finally were seated the entire dining room was empty. Now I do understand that there may have been a shift change or something behind the scenes that would have caused this, and if this was the only thing that went wrong I don't think I would've thought much about it. Secondly when we finally ordered food, both my wife and I ordered their burger. 15 minutes later the waitress came back out to inform us that they no longer have the ingredients for the burger. Again, this would normally be fine since we'd pick another menu item. But when your menu only has 10 or so items, that isn't a lot to pick from. Lastly was the wait time. After all of this, we still had to wait an additional hour, and our party was restless as we had an event to attend to. So we asked to have our food to go. The lady, who i presumed to be the manager, was not unfriendly; but was definitely not helpful in the situation. As she proceeded to gas light us into thinking we had only been there for half an hour. The food itself was fine, but you are also paying a decent amount, so I would expect the food to atleast be fine? I mean the burger is $50. " All in all, thoroughly disappointing affair.
