This little underground club in the Boston Center for the Arts is a fabulous place to hear live music. Tuesday nights the performers are Berkeley College of Music faculty, and other nights have jazz, American standards, and generally great sounds while you're enjoying a meal and/or a delicious cocktail. Note: you "may" have a 7% surcharge on your bill, to help pay for the music. We had a party of 8 dining; over 6 you'll also get a hefty 22% fee added to your bill. So, be prepared - you're going to pay more than you may realize. One star removed for the 29% fee (I could see one surcharge, not both)! Cocktails were inventive, and very good. Our food was beautifully plated and presented. We started with a few orders of the grilled artichokes. They were nicely charred, but a touch too oily. The dipping sauces added great flavor. I had the grilled salmon, which was perfectly cooked. Accompanied by quinoa, a tzatziki with radishes? This was one super flavorful and elegant plate! Others had the risotto, swordfish, or the fusilli (with no sausage). We all agreed - the food was really good. The desserts? Fab-u-lous; we tried them all. Favorites were either the chocolate pot au crème of the bread pudding, with 1 vote for the cheesecake. Even with live music, we could easily talk since we were in the @front" room, with the bar. Came here on a dinner date, but were a little disappointed. First the pros; we were sat at a two top at the top floor railing overlooking the jazz band. Originally our view was a bit blocked but the waiter encouraged us to move over a table when we asked. Also, the food came out fairly quickly and the portions were large! So you won't leave hungry. However, we were so excited for the live music, but the band only played for the first and last 10 minutes of our dinner... even though we shortly after the music began. It also took forever to put orders in and were waiting for our drinks and the check for a while. The food was good but not anything to write home about (swordfish entre and brisket entre). I like the vibe enough to return. It's cozy and perfect for the fall/winter season. Surprisingly yummy dinner at The Beehive! Stopped by at 10 pm after a long flight on a Thursday expecting it to be quiet but it was pretty full with a jazz band and crowded bar. I was still able to be seated and ordered right away. I got a few starters and drinks and expected to have to wait a while given how crowded it was, but everything came out within~ 10 minutes of ordering. My server was really friendly and attentive, and while a bit expensive I thought everything was done well. The scene alone was worth the stop, but I'd definitely recommend to anyone staying in South Boston! read more

I came to The Beehive with a small group (3) and enjoyed my experience. Our server Ronald was phenomenal! He was able to advise on the menu with all of my allergies, was very kind and checked in on us enough to keep a pulse but not so much we felt rushed. I really enjoyed having him as a serve and hope to have him again soon. For the food, we ordered the whipped ricotta to start, and then split 3 mains: the lamb ragu, butternut squash risotto, and the mussels. The whipped ricotta was enough for 3, I think could be good for 4 people as a nice way to taste the flavors. The 3 entrees were good overall. The other two in my party said the risotto was their favorite, mine was the lamb ragu. The risotto was very fresh and light. I felt the balance between citrus and the savory flavor of the squash was very good. The ragu was yummy and I liked how acidic it was. It was a nice surprise and kept the dish light in my opinion. Also the gnocchi was perfect!!! Atmosphere wise, we were sat at the front in the inside. The space is very nice and despite being near the entrance, we didn't feel like chaos was happening. Had a delicious brunch here for Fathers Day! The live music was a great touch and the ambiance was very vibey and laid back. Pro Tip: Go for the show, not for several drinks. No cover or reservation needed, but may be faced with a line to enter. Haven't been here for 10 years and, while we enjoyed the show and talent, the drinks were certainly not as they used to...instead, too pricey and too sweet or filled with ice. The menu is short which I usually appreciate but it was hard finding something enticing on the menu so I went with the American breakfast. Came here for brunch! I was most impressed by the live music - the performers were actually good and went on for quite some time before a break. They also chose music/songs that were good for background without dominating the whole room so we could still hear each other. This place has great vibes, and the musicians here are very talented. I would make a reservation for a table because it can be hard to get a seat or table space around the bar. The drinks here, particularly the Queen Bee was so good. It was sweet, tart and refreshing. We ended up getting some appetizers to split - the fried artichokes and the whipped ricotta. Some of the fried artichokes were a bit tough, but the dipping sauce made up for it. I loved the combination of the peach and tomatoes with the ricotta, but feel like the bread was a bit dry and could have been warmed up more. We went here for our anniversary and it was pretty good! They originally sat us at a table with a bad view but we asked to be moved and they put us right in front of the band! So that was fun it was loud but nice. The food was pretty good. We really enjoyed the white bean dip and arancini for apps. We also got the Brussels sprouts but tbh you could skip these, they were veryyy oily. For our entrees we got the bolognese which was delicious and the roasted chicken which I would honestly get something else last time. It was bland. Ah, the rare 5 star review. That means I'd definitely go back and will still be thinking about it. In fact, it's rare for me to really remember each restaurant I go to, but this one is very memorable. What a cool, fun, interesting, tasty place! And certainly convenient, considering we went to the theater next door after. But if we weren't, we could have stayed to listen to the jazz combo playing, or get fun drinks. We had a group of 7 and they were still fast, accurate, and friendly. Love that. When I told friends I'd made reservations at The Beehive, they said, "Oh! That's our favorite place!" And I see why. First of all, I really appreciate a well marked menu for food allergies. Since I'm gluten free, it really makes my life easier. Although the layout of the menu is kinda silly and would be much better if it was a little easier to read. Great things like gluten free fried artichokes?!? I'm in! So good. I had such a fun time on my girls night at the Beehive! We made a dinner reservation and had a seat on the upper level with view of the stage/band. It was a bit obstructed but overall I felt like it was still a nice spot. We started with cocktails, which were good but not memorable. For an appetizer we ordered the ricotta crostini which was delicious, very creamy and sweet with the grilled peaches on top. For my main dish I ordered the cheeseburger and was very underwhelmed. I asked for it medium rare and it was well-done and just dry with not much flavor. I did upgrade to truffle fries which were pretty good. We ended with the passion fruit cheesecake which was the meal highlight for sure - it was FANTASTIC and I would recommend not skipping this dessert. Today was my birthday and I've been to the beehive several times and had the regular menu and had brunch here before many times. I don't know what's going on but today have they have missed the marks in many ways. This is the first time I thought Service and food missed the marks. Firstly made a reservation and my husband stated it was my birthday on open table. The host placed us in the middle of the cabaret section in a table next to a bunch of lettuce on the floor with a cherry tomato. I told the server that somebody needs to pick this up in case I step on it and he said he went and picked up The tomato and left five pieces of romaine lettuce on the floor next to my foot like does he not know to pick those up too? Really? Anyhow, we requested the move to a better seat on the side. Again, it was lettuce on the floor! I was also disappointed that there was no acknowledgment of a celebration that was stated on Open table. Secondly, after we placed our orders, the food came without our utensils. So we had the American breakfast and I had to wave to another server saying we need utensils because the food showed up first . The food was OK and they served it with wonder bread. I asked about if they offer any other breads like multigrain and he said , "yeah we don't have that Which is pretty pathetic. My chicken sausage was OK and we want a small little fat sausage. These were served with small mixed potatoes, which were ok. Then the music was nice with light jazz, but we didn't know they charged a music fee. What is a Music fee? This tells me this restaurant is going down in many ways. This is something they should disclose upfront, but I noticed this place wasn't crowded during Sunday? Our server was yawning like he's been out late night the night before. I did enjoy the pot du crème but there was no candle or music. No birthday acknowledgement. I hate to say this, but this place is not the beehive I've remembered. It was a great place with great music, but now has become a place where performers are showing up and they look like they're having their last hurrah. This place is iconic for two decades . So I will tell you it has gone down. I don't think there was a manager on site either. The floors were filthy. One night we went we had 3 horrible drinks in a row from different bars and bartenders. However the cocktails set on the menu are good. The overall experience is why I will be returning. There was a stoppage on the MBTA that made me late, I called ten minutes before my reservation and let them know I was at least half an hour away and they were pleasant and were able to push out my reservation. We got a warm greeting when we entered and they hostess was kind enough to take our luggage so we didn't have to drag it around We were seated at a very small table. It would have been appropriate for drinks during a show but made eating dinner a bit of a balancing act. I'll call the space "boho" which feels generous. Things feels a bit tattered and old, which it fine for a music venue but not great for a restaurant We had the arancini, a scallop special, little gem salad, lobster gnocchi, and short ribs. The appetizers were very tasty, well cooked, and well presented. The entrees were generous portions and I can attest that the gnocchi was delicious and creamy. The salad was over dressed, but not inedible The service itself can only be described as awkward. Our server seemed to be trying hard, but forgot information, kept repeating himself, and rambled fairly endlessly before leaving us to eat. Although I have heard sometimes when the band is great, it's hard to get a seat at times. The overall flavor, however, is quite lackluster. The sauce and seasonings did not help elevate the dish and were in fact, somewhat bland. I think I was expecting more for this price point. Although I will note that all of their ingredients are locally sourced. However, the Bohemian design and live jazz music make this a fun dinner spot! Additionally, service is very friendly and efficient. I would perhaps be willing to try the weekend brunch here sometime, as that seems to be the more popular menu.
