Stopped here for late lunch. Had the 1/2 rack of ribs, baked beans and coleslaw. Service was good, typical of an "order at the counter" style restaurant. What really got my attention was the ribs. I like my ribs to fall off the bone and have a good smoke char. These hit the spot perfectly. They have good sauce, personally liked their vinegar base bbq sauce. I haven't eaten here in many years and I remember why. The ribs were flavorless, cornbread was dry and beans tasted like they came straight from a can. I asked twice if they were from a can and they said everything was made from scratch. While that may be the case, it was all flavorless. I was told the meat smoked for 11 hours. It really had the taste like it was in anything but a smoker for that long. The problem is, it's nearly the only bbq around. I made the recommendation that some of the staff try a place in Georgetown Washington, just south of Seattle. That place has received multiple awards for their bbq. read more

We ordered two 1 meat plates that come with 4 sides, we only got 3. It appears to me that their total focus is only on their meats, as the (tiny 4 oz) sides were so terribly bland & tasteless that we could only handle one bite of each before they hit the garbage can. Coleslaw was nothing more than cabbage with absolutely no hint of dressing, the mac & cheese had no taste at all & their honey cornbread had not a hint of a honey taste, it was like eating plain cornbread. I had to add honey to it! Ribs & chicken were decent, sauce was nothing more special that bottled sauce. $30.00 + for the 2 single meat plates. We won't be back even though we were offered a free dessert for the mistake of the missing side. So we can't comment on the baked beans, but the other two were not even comparable to store bought items. Our all time favorite is still Kelly's bbq even though it is 4 x the distance to drive & they clearly put real effort into the best tasting sides we have ever tasted. As someone who grew up eating Carolina BBQ I was surprised by the good taste of their BBQ. I had the 3 meat combo with pulled pork, sausage and TX brisket. The sausage was perfect. Melt in your mouth delicious. I shared it with my coworkers who all enjoyed it. The pulled pork wax good and not fatty. Had a light smoke taste and was very good with their sweet BBQ sauce. The tri tip was good but a little on the dry side. It was good with the BBQ sauce. I also got the honey butter corn bread which was ok but also a little on the dry side. The BBQ beans were pretty good and are on the sweet side. The one thing that confused me was the potato salad. It didn't have a Mayo or sour cream taste. It had a slight basil taste but was inedible. I threw it away after a couple of small taste. My lunch buddies all had the BBQ sandwiches which the quickly devoured as if I was going to steal them from them. They all said they were very good. They also had the collard greens which they said were very tasty. One of them let me try his praline pecan cookie which was really good. One thing that irritates me more than anything coming from a restaurant is when you order take out and you get home only to realize your order is either wrong or incomplete. Went to the BBQ Joint after discovering on YELP they offer homemade desserts (which is something this island lacks, among many other things). We ordered two sides and an order of banana pudding, got home and there was no banana pudding in my bag; not a surprise sadly. I called about this and was asked why I didn't grab it out of the cold case, well let me ask you this; how are FIRST time customers supposed to know that when we order food from a person behind a counter and are NOT directed to pull our order from a case in the restaurant? INFORM your customer of this... The place was open, airy and VERY clean so that is a plus; but getting home to discover missing items in a to go order trumps that,. This island is lacking and assuming business owners here are aware of such, they get a free pass to be mediocre. read more

This place is not bad at all. I am glad it has lasted this long, in the past it was one seedy joint after another. I enjoyed the food, dug looking at all the cool art on the walls, and wish this place the best. However it suffers from the same flaw i see in most PNW bbq joints: food portions are not made for bbq lovers. I got my chili in the smallest dish i have ever seen. It could have been used as a thimble if i was maybe 5 years old. Seriously the spoon had to be shaved down to not pop the sides of the dish. If i had a cavity i could have put this on my molar (stretching it in the process) as a emergency cap until proper dental work was lined up. The brisket was spot on, but the slaw was also served in the same "too small to cast a shadow" dish. I understand these places have costs, and that they are trying to make money. And i also understand that 90% of the people in this country are two fisted food blisters, however charge a little bit more if it means we get a bigger portion of that tasty chili, and let us worry about working it off. 4 stars if the portions would have been slightly bigger. This is a place where you know it'll always be good. Really nice people and consistently tasty homemade food. I've visited north Whidbey all my life and have seen restaurants come and go; I hope this one stays. If I want BBQ, I come here. If I don't know what I want, I come here. They even give away home-baked cookies to kids. My only deduction from five stars is because it'd be nice to see a daily special as a change of pace for regulars. Being from NC, I'm a BBQ snob and was reluctant to give this place a try, but I'm glad I did. Their Carolina BBQ pork, baked beans, and slaw were fantastic. The sweet tea is good, but incredibly overpriced. I can make 4 gallons for the price they charge for one cup. I think I paid $6 for a gallon. I think we find the fixings not quite true enough to Memphis or southern style BBQ while being sweeter than it seems it should be. Decided to give this another try. Ladies were nice and into what was going on in the joint, but I still feel they are overpriced for what you receive. Even my 6 year old wanted to eat as soon as we got home. If you want an overpriced "mid meal" this would be your place to go. Meat is ok, sides are blah and VERY small. We stopped here on a road trip on Whidbey Island and went here based on Yelp reviews. We were craving BBQ and figured we would give it a try because generally Yelp reviews are pretty accurate. Well, not this time. The people at the counter were friendly, but that is about the only really good thing I could find about it here. The food was expensive and the portions were pretty small. We got the BBQ chicken and there was hardly any meat on the bones, maybe a few decent bites and that is it. The sauce wasn't anything special. Kraft does better, in my opinion. The sides were actually kind of gross, the coleslaw was soggy, the beans were bland. For two of us it came to over $35 bucks. What a ripoff. What a wonderful little BBQ restaurant! We've officially declared them one of our favorites and will be visiting them on a regular basis. Courtney is always so sweet and helpful with selections and the rest of the BBQ Joint team are amazing. The pulled pork and beef brisket are award winning and we love the homemade sauce which is prepared fresh daily. We also like to frequent locally owned small businesses whenever we can because so many have truly struggled or closed for good from the covid lockdowns. I've been in the area for almost 3 years and had heard that the food from BBQ Joint was just "OK." I decided to try it today, and I must say that a majority of the reviews aren't wrong. Pulled pork was dry and barely salvageable with the provided sauce. Brisket was tender, but had an odd flavor to it. All of the times I have smoked my own briskets, I've never experienced the odd flavor that this brisket had. The cole slaw had little to no flavor and was more of a side salad than anything else. The baked beans were the only item that was decent. Portions were small. So small, there should be a change in the prices. $10 for even one tiny portion of meat is too much. The amount of food I received for how much I paid, if I was back home, I would have paid $8. Can you exploit the fact that Washington has its fair share of people that don't know good BBQ? Yes you can. Obvisously, most people don't care. I know that I won't eat from here again, simply because the amount of food you get versus the price you pay is just not worth it. read more

Best BBQ Around. If I hadn't grown up in TX I'd probably give this place 5 stars. The prices are a bit on the high side, but overall the food is really good. The owners are very gracious and love having small children in their place. I usually go with the chopped beef sandwich or the Ribs which are both pretty darn tasty. Stopped in here for lunch while tooling around. If you really like Lexington style pork (i.e. vinegar sauce), this is not the place for you. But if you like your pork with sweet barbecue sauce, then it's pretty good. Not fall off your chair amazing, but not a bad experience, either. And about as far as you're going to get from Lexington or the Carolinas as you're going to get without leaving the lower 48. Special note that this place is very clean for a BBQ joint in general. my wife and I ate here after a day of sightseeing the island we tried to order a 4 meat plate to share but they would not let us get two portions of ribs which I find ridiculous, strike one we got ribs, brisket and pulled pork there is an extra charge for the brisket, but all we got were two thin slices which were not very good, strike two the ribs were good but barely enough really, strike two and a half the pulled pork was good and the portion fair sized. they include some cheap sliced bread, not a nice roll and the two sides were fairly small portioned STRIKE THREE I was disappointed they struck out. read more

First of all, the staff is wonderful. Super nice and super helpful- they help you decide what to order especially if you have never eaten there before. They don't serve tri-tip. And coming from CA, I love me some bbq tri-tip. I settled on getting the chicken, the pulled pork, the brisket and the ribs. The ribs are decent but they aren't "fall off the bone" bbq ribs. The brisket is a distant second in comparison to tri-tip but hey, if they don't make it WA, what can I possibly do about it. The pulled pork was a little bland and even with the bbq sauce, I just wasn't blown away. By this time I was too stuffed to try the chicken so that will just have to wait for leftovers. BBQ is one of my favorite foods. But living in WA I know that my expectations must be realistic... this isn't the South, where I grew up. Much to my surprise, BBQ Joint actually made a pretty tasty pulled pork sandwich. Do yourself a favor and get the coleslaw on top. The sandwich was large and they really piled on the pork. I also had a side of baked beans which were really delicious. The homemade sweet iced tea was, as usual anywhere but the South, nothing to write home about. My chief complaint with BBQ Joint is the lack of BBQ options. The best BBQ places all have many homemade sauces to choose from ranging from mild to super hot. At BBQ Joint, I only found one, which was lathered on my sandwich in a healthy dose and pretty good. However, what I would have liked to see were different sauces to try at the table and instead there was just a bottle of hot sauce. Bad, bad, bad move. Also, the restaurant proclaims to have free wi-fi via some rather large lettering on the windows. I thought that was pretty cool and sat down to do some homework while I ate, but the wi-fi didn't work. The staff was very friendly, the dining room large and the place was kept clean. All good signs. If they just up their game in the sauce department I could see BBQ Joint easily gaining another star from me, since their meat was well-seasoned and cooked. Until then, I'll accept that this is as good as it gets here on Whidbey Island and enjoy it anyway. read more

I got the 4 meat plate combo with Memphis Ribs, Carolina Pulled Pork, Spicy Sausage, and Texas Beef Brisket. For my sides, I got corn bread in sub of the white bread and cole slaw and potato salad. Personally, the potato salad had too much mustard other wise it was really creamy and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. Cole slaw I didn't quite enjoy because it was some what bland. This is the first time I had to add salt to a side salad dish. Cornbread was amazing. It was really moist even without the butter. I wish I had more of it. I will probably go back here just for it's cornbread honestly. Now let's talk about the meat. I'm not the best judge of BBQ but I have had my fair share. I think BBQ Joint just a had a slow night because the meats I got were all some what dried out, or maybe it was the togo aspect. The brisket I've always had them in some of the juice it was cooked in but they served one that was dry and even with the BBQ sauce on the side I felt it was a bit tough to chew. The ribs I enjoyed I wish I had gotten more of it though but it was a combo so that could be why. The ribs itself was cut into perfect bit size strips so it was fairly easy for guests to enjoy. I truly wish I had ordered two servings of that in replacement of the brisket. Next item on the line, pulled pork. Everyone has a different opinion and mine is; I don't think the pulled pork had enough fat on it. Eating healthy is important but I felt that without the fat, again the meat lacked moistness so chewing on it was a bit tough. There wasn't much seasoning with it either. The BBQ sauce provided certainly did give it a boost. Sausage! This item particularly caught my taste buds. Even though all the items were somewhat dry and so was the sausage; it had so much flavor and the inside was still moist. I enjoyed this a lot. Now the spice level for this is not that high so if you have a high spice tolerance like I do you may be disappointed with the spice level. If I went with the 4 meat plate again I would get 2 of the ribs and 2 of the sausage. Those were my favorite meats because even with it being dry, those items still maintained it's flavor. The atmosphere was very western and homey. When I walked in I notice the dining area to be clean and well kept. The staff was super friendly. I will definitely be going back there again. Very large, clean restaurant, and I knew I was in the right place when the first 2 things I see on the wall are vintage posters of Tipitina's and Buddy Guy. I had the 1 meat, 2 sides combo, to go. Beef Brisket - very large serving, the brisket was cooked to perfection. Soft, moist, cooked through, and charred around the edges. Sliced a little thick. BBQ sauce was also delicious. Just the right amount of tang and sweetness, balanced. Side 1 Beans - tasty in a nice good amount of bean sauce. Side 2 Slaw - good, but room for improvement. This place is GREAT! All the food is excellent... i am not one for macaroni salad but the one they have here is AMAZING! Staff are very friendly, cozy atmosphere, baked goods look yummy. Being from California though, i really wish there was a tri-tip sandwich...boy do i miss those and BBQ joint would sell those like crazy. Toast some french bread with butter on it, with that amazing BBQ Joint sauce and lay the tri-tip on it....Mmmmm, Mmmmm good! There are many reasons to love this place, not the least of which is the fabulous tasting food, the awesome owners, and the way the business is so completely supportive and appreciative of nearby Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and its personnel. I have yet to order anything that wasn't done to perfection. And always such a treat to get the usual Southern drink specialty: sweet tea! My only complaint (which really isn't a complaint, but an observation) is that the sides are a little on the small side.
