Hands down, some of the best BBQ we've ever tasted. So good in fact, we had them cater a Command Christmas party at our home and it was fantastic! Owners are always at the counter, super friendly and large portions. My husband is partial to the brisket, I love the pulled pork topped with cole slaw and hot sauce. I agree with Olivia H. and probably not just because we're both from Bellevue. I stopped by in passing, just coming through on our way back to Seattle. We too were impressed by the Yelp reviews. But, it honestly might have been the time of night we were passing through (an hour or so before closing), so nothing was fresh, and everything was a little under lukewarm. Perhaps if we'd come at an earlier time, things would've been different. Needless to say we weren't impressed, but we needed to eat, so whatever. Is it sad that I've had better BBQ in Victoria, BC? Well anyway, the meat was underwhelming, and the sides were as expected. I liked the beans, but maybe it's because that's the only part of our meal that was hot. Mediocre BBQ aside, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was welcoming and warm. The food here is amazingly delicious! We each had the 4 meat with chicken, ribs, spicy sausage, and brisket with macaroni salad and cornbread. I live off the island now and have depended on this place for food a few times. First was my moms surprise bday party. They had the food ready for me before they even are scheduled to open! My fault for having a party time issue but they bent over backwards to help me. Customer service was excellent every time I called and in person. After that first time I've gone back with the family a few visits and food is always great, backed with friendly service with a smile! My wife and I ate at The BBQ Joint yesterday and enjoyed it! If you are in Oak Harbor for any length of time and you have a craving for BBQ, it is a good place to go. I got the half rack of memphis ribs and really enjoyed the barbecue sauce, the ribs were tender and you could pull the meat off the bone. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich and she liked it, she was extremely satisfied with the taste of the barbecue sauce as well. The baked beans were really good and I have no complaints about the potato salad or cornbread. The service was quick, the food was ready almost instantly, and the staff was very friendly. Love this place. The ribs are fantastic! The first few times we ate here the ribs were tasty, smoky and delicious, but not quite as tender as we like. Lately they slide off the bone and melt in your mouth with all the smoky, wonderful flavor they have always had. The pulled pork is also really, really good. And even though I'm not usually a fan of brisket, here it is awesome. Love the BBQ sauce (tastes like the South), and the cornbread is worth the small up charge. There's a comment below questioning if this restaurant smokes with a real smoker and wood. The answer is an obvious YES. Not only do the workers stand directly in front of a massive smoker to serve your food, but there is an even bigger one in the back. They post pics of it along with their hickory wood frequently on Facebook. This restaurant is MY FAVORITE and I hate to see a poor review on their smoking technique based off speculation. read more

It's been hard to find a good BBQ place on the West Coast... Period!! This place certainly pulls it's weight to some of my Southern favorites. Sampled a 4 meat platter, with greens, coleslaw and cornbread. Brisket was out of this world - my favorite so far. Ribs had sweet spicy dry rub and fell of the bone. Pulled pork was good. Sausage tasty smokey. Killer sweet tea, just like home. 3 sauces - regular, mustard and vinegar... not as I prefer but vinegar was tasty. The meat spoke for itself. Tonight my husband and I just happened to find this place by accident. We now have a new favorite on Whidbey Island. We both had the Beef Brisket and it was awesome. Served hot, with 2 sides and cornbread. We both had the beans, he had cole slaw and I had the potato salad which was terrific. The meat is local from Skagit Valley, so that's nice to know. I've only been here a little over a month and I can already tell that Oak Harbor is not....any sort of food Mecca. Even a shitty food Mecca. But I was real hungry and I decided to take a trip over to BBQ Joint because of the reviews. And my goodness the meat at this place is AMAZING. And they are not stingy with the portions of meat! My boyfriend got a huge hunk of literally fork tender brisket and I got the pulled pork. The only downside is that they are kinda stingy with the sides. You get a tiny cup of it (almost like a take-away sauce cup) and when I want baked beans, a tiny cup just doesn't cut it. The coleslaw was overly mayo-y in my opinion but my boyfriend loved his potato salad. Be aware though, the BBQ sauce is more Memphis then Texas. So if you like sweet/honey BBQ that is the sauce for you. If you prefer more of a tang then you won't find it at BBQ Joint. Overall I'd definitely come here again, but only to buy the meat. I'd prefer my own sauce and a much larger portion of beans. read more

Sides were actually pretty gross and comparable in flavor and quality to what you'd get at a not-too-great supermarket deli counter. Less than desirable experience. Food was ok, my husbands was too dry and the tea was way too sweet! The atmosphere was awful because of a family that was allowing their kids to run amuck ending with a fire alarm going off as the result of a kid pulling the handle was unacceptable. Our son is 6 and he couldn't believe what was going on. Unfortunately what could have been a nice dinner was royally spoiled! This place is fine, just not great. As noted in other reviews, the meat tends to be dry - you need to add a lot of sauce to get moistness so if you like sauce, this is the place for you. The ribs were cooked a long time and fell off the bone. I liked that. The beans were very very sweet - note to chef: it would be good to hold back on the molasses. Also as noted, the side portions were quite small, but I have to give them good marks on meat portions. I ordered a half rack and expected 4 ribs and they gave me 7. The staff were very nice, friendly, and eager to please. Also, if people are eating in, let's all stop using styrofoam, disposable containers and plastic cutlery. It's a little more work, but we should all switch to crockery and cutlery. The planet will thank us for it. read more

We tried the pulled pork sandwich, ribs, and brisket. With sides of coleslaw, beans and potato salad. I would give the pulled pork sandwich a 4 out of 10. The sandwich was soggy by the time we had it but that is mostly our fault since we got it as take out. But the pork was lacking that smokey flavor you expect from good pulled pork. Also it seemed like it had been sitting for awhile because it had a mushy texture to it. The brisket was a 2 out of 10. The couple slices I had were extremely dry. I mean it was almost disrespectful to call this thing a brisket. The only thing stopping me from giving it a 1 is that there was a nice smoke ring around it. Ribs were a 6 out of 10. They were moist but pretty small for what I'm used to getting down South. They were also a little bland but the bbq sauce they have isn't bad at all so just slather them with it. If I were to eat here again I would have these. All the sides were bad. The slaw was watery and bland. The potato salad was just under cooked potatoes lathered in mayo and over seasoned with dill. The beans tasted like generic canned baked beans with some bbq sauce poured into it. Maybe the method of cooking warrants the price but the food definitely does not. read more
