I typically never write reviews, but this place was great. i really did have low expectations because i never hear about this place but me and the hubby were very satisfied! we got the Philly sandwich and a rio grande burger, as well as a chocolate cake. reasonably priced and our waitress Victoria was super sweet, and accommodating even though i asked her for some extra things ! Ambience and music were great. definitely recommend ! coming from another waitress :) read more

The food was fine, basic American diner food--definitely nothing special. But the prices were out of control. My 12 year old ordered noodles with butter and they charged us $22?! I wanted a salad but they were all $19+ and had meat on them and I asked if I could sub avocado instead of meat and the waitress said they would have to upcharge me? Sorry, what? You have to upcharge me on a TWENTY DOLLAR SYSCO SALAD?! I grew up on the island, so I am not some tourist who doesn't understand the prices here. I took my kids to eat here on a Sunday evening after a long day thinking it would be cheap quick diner food. It was over a hundred dollars for one adult and two kids to eat a basic diner meal- we had butter noodles, a grilled cheese, fries, and a 3pc fish and chips with 3 fountain sodas. NEARLY A HUNDRED DOLLARS BEFORE TIP. And their tip system had the nerve to ask me to add 20/25/30% on top of the outrageous prices?! It was insulting. I am not someone to complain about prices generally, but I had dinner for two adults at a fancy south end restaurant a few nights ago and we each had wine and it was about the same price. I was sincerely shocked by the prices for incredibly mediocre food. It almost felt like they were trying to prank us, honestly. Definitely do not recommend. The island has a lot of excellent restaurants that charge fair prices. This is not one of them. read more

From the courtesy of the employees to the attention of detail when it comes to customer service and satisfaction. It goes without saying that the food is delicious. I'm partial to the fish and chips myself. Lastly I've gotta add that they treat my golden retriever service dog, Rosie, like royalty. read more

I took my kids here for brunch they all were happy and full belly's! Kids meals were generous orotiksn the kids pancake is bigger than your face. Together had pancakes, sausage, sunny side eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. Everything was cooked well and tasted great. My oldest had the chicken Alfredo that exceeded my expectations . It was delicious. I am glad I took a bite . Everyone was friendly and food came quickly. read more

Good breakfast spot. Parking lot was packed, but still got seated within a few minutes. The menu is extensive, they serve more than breakfast. I ordered the Potatoes Rancheros and got 1 Blueberry pancake instead of toast. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive. The food was prepared well. Pancake was thick and was full of blueberries. Tried it once, and went back again the next day. Good portions, reasonable prices, great service. read more

For the first time I chose to eat Lunch at Island Cafe. I ordered the Avocado Chicken Sandwich. It comes on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo and cheese. The onion and pickle is served on the side. The sandwich is loaded with avocado wedges and the chicken is juicy and delicious. I chose fries for my side dish. They were served piping hot and crunchy outside and soft inside. The wait staff were polite and helpful, as always, always pleasant to talk with. read more

The food was delicious, a little pricey but you definitely get a big portion of food which fills you up for the rest of the day! The staff are very kind and they check up on you in a timely manner. The inside is cozy and it felt very local; I was visiting as a tourist! read more

My food was actually good, but the reason for the one star is due to the lack of customer service our waiter provided. The cafe wasn't busy either, maybe 4 or 5 other customers inside, but Cristian chose to blatantly ignore us on numerous occasions. There was a gentlemen sitting next to us and anytime he requested the server he came running. When we would try to get his attention he would walk right by us. I asked for straws and water for my daughter and never received it. Never checked on us to ensure we were okay along with our food, which is very showed poor customer service. read more

Always a great place for a bite. The food is super good and they feature new specials all the time. The staff is very nice and helpful with any help you may need. 5 stars all the way! The food was incredible, the service was exceptional, and the prices were good for what you get. My family of 7 isn't usually unanimous in loving somewhere but not a single complaint from the kids. They all can't wait to go back. read more

Good service I asked for chocolate milk and it came out in like 2 minutes? The pancakes looked neutral, they smell like fresh warm air with a hint of Canadian syrup, the seats are a bit comfortable, the waiters are real nice & kind read more

I stopped because of the reviews. But the food was awful and the service was terrible. Don't stop find another place to eat.

Overpriced mediocre food. We went for brunch and were sat next to the trash can... even though there were other tables and booths available. Yeah yeah, I could have asked to be moved but isn't it common sense to not have a table next to the trash? The food is alright, it's nothing amazing. Very pricey. I used to come here but just got pricey for me. It's just not worth it. But it's usually poppin' with the retirees. read more

This is your standard diner. The food was good. I had the islander breakfast. 11.50 for one egg, choice of meat, hash browns and toast. I ask for side of salsa, and that was 1.50. I don't think they should charge for a side of salsa. It was a tiny amount for that much money. The service was good. They run a tight ship. Nothing fancy. Just a diner. read more

Overall the food quality was very good but the menu prices were a bit high compared to similar restaurants in the area but as I said, the food quality was very good so perhaps that justifies the prices. Two things I didn't like was my daughter ordered the special of the day without asking the price which was spaghetti with three meatballs and a slice of toast, $26.00. You read that right, $26.00 for a plate of spaghetti, probably cost less than $5 to make. Nice mark-up. The second thing was when I went to pay they had one of those hand-held payment devices with the tips starting at 18%. Now 18% really isn't that bad, I often give tips more than that, but when the menu prices are inflated it doesn't justify a high dollar wise tip based on the total bill. read more

Excellent clam chowder! Service was fast, place has ok-ish decor. A little out dated I suppose but will go again!

Friends and I were up in Oak Harbor very early on a weekend morning and wanted to get a nice hot breakfast. We walked into the Island Cafe, promptly greeted and seated with glasses of iced water. Our orders were taken promptly and our breakfast beverages delivered quickly. The food came out quickly as well and was enjoyed by all three of us. We were checked on regularly and asked often if we wanted refills on our coffee. Two out of three of us and ended up getting boxes because the portions were substantial. read more

One word of warning: if you're getting takeout and away from home, BRING YOUR OWN NAPKINS. I ordered the double cheeseburger and the burger was fine but SUPER messy. I mean, the absolute messiest, wettest, sloppiest burger I've ever eaten. And the only napkin provided was as thin and absorbent as wax paper. The fries were amazing and the fried butterfly shrimp were fantastic. I'd go here again but I would bring my own towel next time. read more

We had breakfast at the Island Cafe during a holiday weekend. There were 3 gals on the floor running the Saturday morning breakfast shift. Gal 1 was our greeter. She didn't even look at us or say anything. She just grabbed some menus, took us to our table and took our coffee order. Gal 2 was our waitress. She was kind and took our order quickly. Gal 3 was in charge of bussing the tables. While these 3 ladies were waiting for food orders, and not waiting on customers, they all looked tired, sad and annoyed. No smiles, no talking to each other. It was quite amusing since they were on full display to the customers while standing behind the breakfast bar. The food was pretty good, but the ambience was terrible. These gals definitely need to be cheered up. read more

My wife and I have been coming up from Everett to this restaurant every Wednesday night since discovering it about 7 months ago. The food has always been top notch with excellent service to match...until last night. We had been out of town for about three weeks and were looking forward to visiting one of our favorite dining places. My how things changed in those three weeks. The server, Kaitlynn, seemed more intent on trying to be cute than actually doing her job. Before going away we had seen this girl once about two months previously when she was just beginning her training. She still struggles with the order system software, her 'perfume' was so overpowering that you could actually taste it while eating, she went around constantly humming very loudly and whatever it was she hummed had no rhythm or identifiable melody...it was VERY annoying. At one point I asked her if she would bring my wife a straw for her water. She said, "no problem", and then proceeded to go behind the counter and just screw around with something else. The straws were right across from our table, not even 4 feet away, so I just got up and fetched it myself. But, unfortunately, Kaitlynn was only part of the tragedy. As I said at the start of this review the food here is always some of the best around, but tonight's meal was a different story. Most of it was warm at best, the hash browns were very hard and crunchy, the bread for the french toast was stale, and the cheese we asked to be added into both of our orders of scrambled eggs was more like uncooked yolk than cheese. To put the final icing on this cake, the kitchen crew had Hispanic music cranked up so loud (as well as them singing along to it) that it overpowered the Christmas music in the dining room. Combine that with Kaitlynn's incessant loud humming and it was a cacophony! I don't know what happened in the three weeks we weren't able to visit this place, but it really fell apart for us last night. We'll give the Island Cafe another shot because it has always been so consistently good in the past...but we'll make sure to come up when we know one of the other servers are working and we will hope the kitchen staff has been spoken to. read more

Great chicken fajita omelette. Large portion. I enjoyed and recommend. Great service. read more

The waitress was hard-working and amazing. As far as the food goes, it was all pretty much very basic and canned bland. For the price, I feel it was very much over inflated. I shouldn't have to spend $20 for a French toast and eggs and the coffee was so bitter it tasted like metallic burnt carbon. Definitely recommend going to Frank's place to further support local business. NO MILITARY/1St RESPONDER DISCOUNTS read more

We stopped at the Island Cafe because we had visited the Island Cafe in Anacortes recently for breakfast. Maybe it's the same owners and maybe not. It was not quite dinner time and the cafe was empty other than employees. The location was very nice and typical restaurant appearance. It was clean. Our server was fast, friendly and very good. We were a little surprised with the menu. It seemed expensive for the type of restaurant and the items. However, the food was good. Would we go back? ... probably not as we're only in the area for another few days and it was expensive! read more

Breakfast is overpriced. My hash browns were over cooked and greasy. Small portions for the price. Cheap diner food.

Not being much of a breakfast fan, I was so happy to find out that I could order Fish and Chips at 8:30 am. Everyone else in our group ordered the Country Breakfast, which looked amazing. I love the small cast iron skillets they use to serve the eggs. Scrambled eggs, ham, green peppers, onions and cheese (from the menu) are all mixed together and served with biscuits and sausage gravy. My Senior Fish and Chips was more than enough---one piece of batter dipped deep-fried cod and fries (again, from the menu). Crunchy and delicious makes for my kind of meal to start the day. Griselda was very patient with us and was very helpful in making decisions. When we are on Whidbey again, we will also be at Island Cafe. read more

Hands down my favorite diner-type eating in Oak Harbor. It's like Cheers, but for pancakes and coffee. The staff are friendly and remember their regulars fondly. I wish I could afford to go every week! Edit - and now they deliver! Winning! read more

As we entered the restaurant, the staff was very friendly. Our server was also one of the most welcoming, friendly and nicest person we met! She was very patient with us since we haven't been there and not knowing what to eat. If you are heading over there ask for Chris. She's amazing and caring. The menu have a variety of choices from all day breakfast including hash brown, toast. Also specialty salads, dinner plates, sandwiches and hamburgers they are all included French fries with or without seasonings (garlic)which was delicious!! The lemonade was also one of the most tasty, sweet and tart. We're definitely going to return on our next visit to Whidbey Island at Oak Arbor. The ambience is definitely a family place. The music is also a combination of classic rock, with some oldies once in a while. read more

Stopped here for take-out while on our way to Burlington from Port Townsend. Read some Yelp reviews and decided to give it a shot! We called in our order and they told us it would be ready in 10 minutes! We ordered the 3 piece fish and chips meal, and the garlic shrimp skewers appetizer. The fish and chips came with coleslaw, which was ok, but not the best. The fish was pretty greasy on the outside. The inside was cooked nicely and had a flaky texture. The fries were pretty standard. The garlic shrimp skewers were really good. They came with two pieces of grilled bread and a side of warm garlic butter for dipping. Overall pretty decent. Not sure we'd be back as it wasn't too memorable. read more

There are really two reviews in one here. I say that because my potatoes rancheros where great! They definitely were in the high 3s of good. However. My daughter's country breakfast with biscuits and gravy had issues. She took her first bite of the biscuits and gravy and gave me such a confused look I had to ask. She said it was sweet. So, normally I would not review someone else's food but I had to taste for myself. She was right. It was not just a little sweet. I detected a distinct flavor that reminded me of that icky frosting they used to use on grocery store sheet cakes! We told the waitress who said she would tell the cooks. Thankfully there was enough of my rancheros I just shared and she skipped the inedible meal. We didn't get discounted for her breakfast which was disappointing. read more
