Most restaurants with a view of the water are either overpriced and lackluster or shacks with quick service food. Callen's is a happy medium - a beautiful view, but a casual, comfortable dining area/bar with great food. There's lots of great seafood options here and classic american salads and sandwiches. Everything is prepared well and feels fresh. The kitchen consistently is a bit slow, although service is attentive throughout. There's a notice on the menu that says to expect slower service - this isn't. 20 minute meal before you get on the ferry - it's a leisurely experience with time to have conversations. It's also very accessible - parking out front, a nice ramp, and three single stall accessible bathrooms! read more

Went to Callen's this evening during happy hour with a friend. Lots of good food options, and not a lot of people out on a Tuesday. We got the wedge salad, chicken wings, fishwich, and deviled eggs. All of them very delicious. Only critique is the hot sauce for the chicken wings had a big hit to it after the first bite, but the sauce was amazing taste. The chicken alone was good, had some good chard parts and smoky salty flavor. The fishwich was amazing, the sauce and the thin crispy batter on the fish was delicious. I had added a little bit of that hot sauce from the wings and that made it even better! Loved the views from the bar and all around the place. We got to see the sunset, which was really pretty that night. The service was good. The servers had good communication and we were able to get our order in quite easily and fast. read more

We arrived around 9:30 on a Saturday morning, and there were plenty of tables. Around 10:00, they started getting busy. There was no host/hostess on duty, so a female was doubling as hostess. She told us she would be with us in a few minutes, and eventually came back, pointed to the seating area, and instructed us to pick any table. She could have told us that to begin with. She didn't ask us if we wanted drinks, but the bus boy brought water. Eventually, our server reappeared and brusquely said, "Are you ready to order? If not, I'm going to take their order,"while pointing to another party. We were not yet ready, so I asked for more time. It was a long time before she returned. When the server returned, she was suddenly very friendly. It was if someone had flipped a switch. She took our order, and our food came out in a timely manner. Food was a mixed bag. I ordered the corned beef hash. My eggs were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The toast, which was bread from a local bakery, was pretty special. The corned beef had a nice flavor, but it was tough. The smashed potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned, but they were on the cold side. I did taste my boyfriend's chicken fried steak and thought it was very good. In terms of ambiance, the place has a rustic, comfortable feel. The restroom was spotless, but out of paper towels. When one of the people in my party mentioned that to the server, she said she didn't have time to deal with it, and to tell the bus boy. In the end, I grabbed a roll of paper towels from behind the hosting stand and put them in the restroom. The server was very friendly and we really enjoyed them when they were able to make it over to our table. The clam chowder is thick and flavorful. What a great spot. I was visiting Whidbey Island and chose to hangout in Coupville. Callen's was one of the top restaurants so I decided to dine here. It's a nice spot right across the ferry. I sat by the window so it gave me a nice water view. Service was awesome from Synda-Marie. 5 STARS. I enjoyed listening to the music that was played on a record player. Wow!!! I haven't seen vinyl 12" records in years. Food: I ordered the smoke salmon served on a fresh bagel. It was delicious and the best I've ever had. I washed it down with a glass of Prosecco. Went here for Sunday Brunch. We had a mixture of main brunch items including the egg and veggie skillet, crab bennidict and omelet. The cinnamon roll, fruit plate and entre were wonderful and well prepared. Washed these dow with tea, coffee, peach Bellini, and bloody Mary. Perfect PNW atmosphere across from ferry landing and views of the sound and Olympic peninsula. Good service and good coffee! Parking was adequate, but likely gets tight in the summer. We dealt with three different people: one who took our order, one that delivered our food, and one that gave us our check. Ice water had things floating in it (hard water calcium is what I was hoping it was). The 3 piece fish and chips were not very labels; but chunks of whitefish. My order came out tepid. My wife ordered their cowboy burger - that was ok tasting; albeit well done and not for the sauce on the burger it would have been overly dry. I stopped in Callen's for a bite to eat because I had just over an hour before my ferry started boarding. I volunteered to sit at the bar and was waited on shortly after seating. After studying the menu I chose to order the breakfast sandwich with sausage patty. When asked if I wanted ciabatta or regular bread, I went with ciabatta. The sandwich was DEEE-licious! It consisted of avocado, tomato, greens, fried egg, and sausage patty. The fried egg wasn't fried through, allowing just a drop or two of liquid yolk. My man and I were very impressed with this place and heard so many great things about it. It was a cute little place in a quiet area by the ferry which made it special because it was very quaint. Our server was so sweet and took great care of use. The drink menu looked amazing so I will be back to try them. I ordered the crab Louie salad and crab cakes and everything was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. I loved the sauces that came with the crab cakes and the delicious Louie dressing for the salad. We also ordered garlic fries to start which were delicious and we wish we would have ordered more! Came again to please my wife on an early Saturday night. Plenty of dining room space but once again we were set in a corner window in the bar area with kids running around like crazy with only one side and a view. Plenty of other tables but didn't want to to move. So we moved the table over so she could get a view and I could stare at the ferry dock. She enjoyed her expensive drink and the scallops dish. I had a fish and chips again. Really average and my stomach was not right later. She helped me finish the fries after three attempts from staff to remove them. I'd just as soon have Ivar's fish bar Cajun fish and chips but this was close to the house. It ended up in some drama over my view of a standard tip vs what she thought was deserving. I'm absolutely done with this place as it always leaves me wishing I hadn't bothered with their goofy staff, average at best but not cheap food, and the sheer crazy atmosphere here around tourists and the odd locals that let their kids race around restaurants. Please note!!! Just about every time we have gone here, there is some other ferry tourists, which we can be too, that are stacked up at the very under organized and run host desk trying to figure out if they can dine and still catch their boat! We did the PNW Ragnar Relay this past summer and after our van finished all our legs, it was time for a proper meal and we found Callens. They were packed and we ended up waiting for about an hour, we were all so tired though that we passed out in the waiting area. Once seated, our server was very busy but really nice. She got our order in asap but did give us a heads up that the kitchen was backed up and that it was going to be a while. The breakfast sandwich was amazing. I inhaled it. We waited 45 minutes for a table and spent 45 minutes waiting for appetizers then another 30 minutes waiting for entrees. The service was terrible, the wait staff was nonexistent. The appetizer was stale and when we reminded the waitress that we were catching the ferry, she just told us she would cancel our entrees and we didn't have to pay because it wouldn't be ready. We were here for two hours and didn't even get dinner, just a bad salad and stale cold fries. I'm embarrassed that I took my fiancée here and we're both still. We walked in BEFORE the lunch rush and had to wait a few minutes to be seated (there WAS a host just for this purpose). Took 5-10 minutes until we could order, then waited 35 minutes for 2 eggs (poached and served with so much water I had to pour it out on to my plate. Fruit was also not fresh. Waiter never checked in with us this whole time, but did have time to fold napkins with the other waiters. Although , this was as much the problem of an understaffed kitchen as it was the wait staff. Pulled pork sandwich was the perfect size and the bbq sauce was tangy and slightly sweet. I would have loved a side of pickles but that's me. We went to Callens to celebrate my son's 19th birthday tonight. We had a party of 9 ages 10-83. We were sat down and had drink and apps orders done immediately. The good; the staff is so amazing! Personable and on their game! Then the dinner was served.... Now comes the bad; My sister and dad got steak, they were overcooked. My husband had fish and chips, the fish was amazing, fries cold and what they called slaw had no flavor no seasoning. It was literally cabbage with a touch of mayo. My son's burger was overcooked as well. I got the mussels, while an appreciate the garlic and shallots in the broth the white wine was undetectable and they forgot to add any thing else and the sourdough was two HARD little ends. My mom (81) ordered the bang bang shrimp and her meal was served 15 minutes later. The manager (Michelle) came by to check on us, looked at my mussels and bread and was horrified, she jumped right out on it realized the that the people who had fries were all served cold fries. She had them remake my meal and also brought out fresh fries for the table. Michelle in all her purple glory (my son's favorite color so we all noticed and complemented her) as well as our server Amy, went above and beyond to correct the problems! I feel that the kitchen is overwhelmed, I also noticed a lot of tables empty not being sat and there were so many people waiting for tables, there was even a couple in the mid 60s by the look, sitting on the floor in the waiting room. I think this place could be amazing but I feel the kitchen can't handle the amount of guests and it gets put o. The staff to run triage. You all are so lucky to have a front of house staff that obviously loves their jobs and the service industry keeping it all together. Sucking it so far. Dog friendly but no service outside so managing dogs while trying to order inside. After diligently moving my dogs for other patrons was passed over to order x2. Then can't get a glass of wine with my $50 meal because that would require me to go to the inside bar and leave my dogs unattended. Sketch option. Having an underage worker taking all outdoor orders does not make this all that "dog friendly." Yes, people do travel alone with their dogs.
