Most restaurants with a view of the water are either overpriced and lackluster or shacks with quick service food. Callen's is a happy medium - a beautiful view, but a casual, comfortable dining area/bar with great food. There's lots of great seafood options here and classic american salads and sandwiches. Everything is prepared well and feels fresh. The kitchen consistently is a bit slow, although service is attentive throughout. There's a notice on the menu that says to expect slower service - this isn't. 20 minute meal before you get on the ferry - it's a leisurely experience with time to have conversations. It's also very accessible - parking out front, a nice ramp, and three single stall accessible bathrooms! read more

Went to Callen's this evening during happy hour with a friend. Lots of good food options, and not a lot of people out on a Tuesday. We got the wedge salad, chicken wings, fishwich, and deviled eggs. All of them very delicious. Only critique is the hot sauce for the chicken wings had a big hit to it after the first bite, but the sauce was amazing taste. The chicken alone was good, had some good chard parts and smoky salty flavor. The fishwich was amazing, the sauce and the thin crispy batter on the fish was delicious. I had added a little bit of that hot sauce from the wings and that made it even better! Loved the views from the bar and all around the place. We got to see the sunset, which was really pretty that night. The service was good. The servers had good communication and we were able to get our order in quite easily and fast. read more

We arrived around 9:30 on a Saturday morning, and there were plenty of tables. Around 10:00, they started getting busy. There was no host/hostess on duty, so a female was doubling as hostess. She told us she would be with us in a few minutes, and eventually came back, pointed to the seating area, and instructed us to pick any table. She could have told us that to begin with. She didn't ask us if we wanted drinks, but the bus boy brought water. Eventually, our server reappeared and brusquely said, "Are you ready to order? If not, I'm going to take their order,"while pointing to another party. We were not yet ready, so I asked for more time. It was a long time before she returned. When the server returned, she was suddenly very friendly. It was if someone had flipped a switch. She took our order, and our food came out in a timely manner. Food was a mixed bag. I ordered the corned beef hash. My eggs were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The toast, which was bread from a local bakery, was pretty special. The corned beef had a nice flavor, but it was tough. The smashed potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned, but they were on the cold side. I did taste my boyfriend's chicken fried steak and thought it was very good. In terms of ambiance, the place has a rustic, comfortable feel. The restroom was spotless, but out of paper towels. When one of the people in my party mentioned that to the server, she said she didn't have time to deal with it, and to tell the bus boy. In the end, I grabbed a roll of paper towels from behind the hosting stand and put them in the restroom. The shame about this place is that you can imagine the potential, and yet the service is so bad that it detracts from the experience. read more

callen's is a small restaurant near the port townsend ferry terminal, and is the perfect way to end a trip to whidbey! the risotto and the berry cobbler were highlights from the dishes we chose - the cobbler especially was a perfect combination of sweet and tart berries, soft pillowy chantilly cream, and vanilla ice cream that melted into the oat crumble. amy was so kind and personable during the entire service. after a small mix-up, she went above and beyond to make sure our experience was delicious and comforting after a busy day trip. While waiting for the ferry, my husband ran in to order so I can't speak much of the inside but the food he grabbed was delicious!! What I originally wanted (anything with local mussels) was out of stock so the lady taking our order suggested the shrimp pasta made with locally caught shrimp. Hubs got the fish and chips. I sat by the window so it gave me a nice water view. Service was awesome from Synda-Marie. 5 STARS. I enjoyed listening to the music that was played on a record player. Wow!!! The cinnamon roll, fruit plate and entre were wonderful and well prepared. Washed these dow with tea, coffee, peach Bellini, and bloody Mary. Perfect PNW atmosphere across from ferry landing and views of the sound and Olympic peninsula. Good service and good coffee! Parking was adequate, but likely gets tight in the summer. We dealt with three different people: one who took our order, one that delivered our food, and one that gave us our check. Ice water had things floating in it (hard water calcium is what I was hoping it was). The 3 piece fish and chips were not very labels; but chunks of whitefish. My order came out tepid. My wife ordered their cowboy burger - that was ok tasting; albeit well done and not for the sauce on the burger it would have been overly dry. After studying the menu I chose to order the breakfast sandwich with sausage patty. When asked if I wanted ciabatta or regular bread, I went with ciabatta. The sandwich was DEEE-licious! It consisted of avocado, tomato, greens, fried egg, and sausage patty. The fried egg wasn't fried through, allowing just a drop or two of liquid yolk. Wow. Just wow. I have never been to a restaurant where the service was so bad that there was no server in the dining room for over 10 minutes. Everyone at my table needed a refill and there was no one to be found. Finally the host was back behind the host desk and when I asked if we could get refills, he said I'd have to wait for the servers. When our food finally arrived, we all were put off within the first bite. I had the chicken pot pie that came with a salad and the pot pie was TERRIBLE. Zero flavor, zero salt, it was flavorless slop and ridiculously tiny for $19. I cannot figure out how this place is still open. On top of it all, my daughter and I both had terrible stomach aches after both having the Caesar salad. The only positive about this place is the view of the ferry across the street. read more

My man and I were very impressed with this place and heard so many great things about it. It was a cute little place in a quiet area by the ferry which made it special because it was very quaint. Our server was so sweet and took great care of use. The drink menu looked amazing so I will be back to try them. I ordered the crab Louie salad and crab cakes and everything was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. I loved the sauces that came with the crab cakes and the delicious Louie dressing for the salad. We also ordered garlic fries to start which were delicious and we wish we would have ordered more! Plenty of dining room space but once again we were set in a corner window in the bar area with kids running around like crazy with only one side and a view. Plenty of other tables but didn't want to to move. So we moved the table over so she could get a view and I could stare at the ferry dock. She enjoyed her expensive drink and the scallops dish. I had a fish and chips again. Really average and my stomach was not right later. She helped me finish the fries after three attempts from staff to remove them. I'd just as soon have Ivar's fish bar Cajun fish and chips but this was close to the house. It ended up in some drama over my view of a standard tip vs what she thought was deserving. I'm absolutely done with this place as it always leaves me wishing I hadn't bothered with their goofy staff, average at best but not cheap food, and the sheer crazy atmosphere here around tourists and the odd locals that let their kids race around restaurants. Please note!!! Just about every time we have gone here, there is some other ferry tourists, which we can be too, that are stacked up at the very under organized and run host desk trying to figure out if they can dine and still catch their boat! A young family this time that finally realized it wasn't realistic given their boat was about to land and unload!! This is not a quick while we are here waiting for a ferry kind of place. I want so badly to love Callen's, but damn it just is more terrible each time I give it another chance, and this time it made me sick so I am bothering to write this. My friend and I waited half an hour to be seated, only to be stuck in the very worst table, where we were then ignored for another half hour before having our order taken. Our server forgot to bring my drink, and when our food finally came, my fried chicken was burnt on the outside but not fully cooked on the inside, which I discovered after a few bites. Server walked by and tossed two to-go boxes on the table when we had not even had our food for very long - guess she wanted us to hurry up - and when I said hey, this chicken isn't cooked all the way through, she snatched it, took it away and came back with a check - never apologized, didn't ask if I wanted something different, and charged full price for a dish I couldn't eat. And yeah, I'm feeling pretty awful now from it. Monday in the island and it's a challenge to find many lunch spots open. Bloody Mary's were great..spice was on point and the pickled veggies were tasty and crunchy. Pulled pork sandwich was the perfect size and the bbq sauce was tangy and slightly sweet. I would have loved a side of pickles but that's me. The fries (gluten-free) were shoestring but still thick enough to taste the crispy salted to my taste potato's.
