I really wish we had something more like this closer to home this Speakeasy-esq place (it's not really hidden but it's a flight of stairs up before the main restaurant which is another flight of stairs above this cute place) They outdid themselves with decor and dark ambience, the staff are super friendly and attentive while giving you your privacy. It's not large but there were plenty of tables and seats at the bar I honestly cannot remember the name of the drink I had but it hit the spot and wasn't too sweet (always a plus in my book) we also had the Trio of house made dips 3/5 which was chunky hummus, a dried tomato and walnut romesco and feta kopanisti with LOTS of pita bread. The In Between is located at the halfway point walking up the stairs to Sirens, another restaurant/bar in Port Townsend. I really liked The In Between's logo and interior design, it felt like stepping into the Prohibition era. We ordered a drink each from the Seasonal Summer Menu and shared a hummus plate. The drinks were nothing extraordinary but pretty good, and the hummus plate was a great shareable snack for the two of us. However, the service was super slow and frustrating. The staff were overextended since they were taking on both the bartender and server roles, so it was very difficult to catch their attention. We ended up having to approach them while they were in the middle of making a drink after trying to flag them down for 20 minutes and failing. We were in a bit of a rush towards the end so this was not the best experience, but definitely a bar worth checking out if you're not in a rush and have a lot of patience! read more

The In Between, as the name says, is located between the first and second floor of the building. First floor is the entrance / ground level, and second floor is the main bar (Sirens). This is a nice speakeasy with plenty of seating so we were able to choose where we want to sit. We opted to sit at the bar and got the Divinus Serpens (tiki drink) and Slippery Slope (hot drink). The Divinus Serpens sounded enticing but it was a blended drink and it tasted watered down and strong at the same time. It lacked some flavor so I didn't really like it, but the presentation is good. When they say it's prepared with fire, I expected more than a tiny fire that you can't see since the drink was not filled all the way in the cup. The Slippery Slope is a rum and tea based cocktail that's pretty good and strong, but the presentation is lacking. The menu sounded more enticing than the actual drinks, based on a datapoint of 2 cocktails. We got some olives to-go so that we could catch the ferry back to Seattle in town, and I appreciated them preparing it quickly, and it is decent. Overall, this is a decent speakeasy in ambience and menu descriptions but lack a bit in flavor. read more

Attentive service + great cocktails = A stellar bar experience! Someone at PT Anchor told us we'd find killer mezcal drinks here and someone was not wrong! Our bar experience was more of a restaurant experience with our bartender coming over to our table to periodically check-in on us. Not only was she helpful, but she was actually pleasant and not put-off by all our questions. Much like the rest of Port Townsend, the overall feeling of The In Between was very welcoming and not at all stuffy or snooty. I wish there were more places like this here at home. I have never encountered such a rude bartender. We were the only people in the bar, the music was absurdly loud for a dark, intimate, lounge style bar. One of our party has hearing issues and we asked if the music could be lowered. Nope. We tried again, asking if it could be lowered just until other customers came in. The bartender literally said we should go somewhere else! So, we did. What happened to customer service? how would it harm the bartender or the evening's revenue to lower the music for a spell? Outstanding little cocktail lounge nestled into a legendary building on Water St. Our bartenders, Cameron and Areilla, were excellent - keeping pace with the crowd on a busy Friday night. My wife had multiple daiquiris with a variety of rums suggested by our bartenders, and I cycled through a mixture of their cocktail menu and scotch old fashioneds. All were exceptional. Cameron also managed to revive one of his old Malort-centric cocktails for me -- the VoldeMalort -- because my masochistic self can't say no to that vile liqueur. Shockingly, the cocktail was not only drinkable, but downright enjoyable! If you've ever tasted Malort, you know how freakin' hard it is to balance out that grapefruit/old gym sock taste in a mixed drink... so this is high praise for a bartender! A small group of us went to The In Between over the weekend for a couple drinks. Very cute ambiance and great location. We all ordered at the bar and were told the drinks would be brought out to us on the back patio. It took almost half an hour for us to get 6 out of the 7 drinks we ordered. It took an additional half hour to get the last drink. They all tasted great. We decided to go back inside in hopes that our second round would come out quicker. We all ordered our drinks but one of us was told to "pick something else because a whiskey sour takes too much time to make". Ridiculous. We sat at a table and waited for our drinks. The bartender eventually brought them over and, honestly, threw them on the table without a word. On top of her blatant rudeness, the drinks were HORRIBLE. The place itself had little windows to look out over the water. The décor was very much that of a speakeasy with pleasing art deco style. There were plenty of tables for 2-4 people to cozy up. The bartenders seemed pleasant enough though a bit frazzled for a relatively slow environment. DRINK EXPERIENCES. We were told from a friend the menu featured drinks by the decade, but actually there were just a link of drink specials (including some non alcoholic drinks). The ordering is where things got screwy. We ordered chips which never came. My partner ordered the Know 'Nuttin which didn't live up to the ingredients listed in it. THE MOST MEMORABLE "TEA." It was literally a cold day in July so I ordered green tea. They were out of green tea, but I was told I could get Earl Grey instead. However, when my drink arrived it was deep dark brown and smelled like coffee. I instantly took it up to the bar where the bartender told me the dark, coffee-smelling liquid in the clear glass was green tea. They asked me to take a sip of the dark, coffee-smelling liquid to make sure it was not green tea. I took a sip, confirmed it was coffee, and went back to my table. Then they brought me a jasmine tea. It was such a bizarrely amusing encounter. To be fair, I ordered a hot tea in the summer at a bar so I don't want to penalize them too much for this. I had high hopes for this place, but think I'd opt for another PT bar next time. Good luck finding the In Between. My sources tell me that was the intention; in a town that survives on the tourist trade, this place was designed to be a hang-out for locals. Kind of modeled after a speak-easy, bordering on dark and intimate. It was packed when we got there, no place for our foursome to sit, until a couple at a four seat table saw us looking, quickly finished, and gave us their table. That's what locals do in Port Townsend. Cocktails reign supreme here. Lots of very imaginative takes on old favorites. Everyone at our table loved theirs ... I had a glass of red wine that perfectly suited me. Food here is all tapas type. We started with the hand-cut, homemade potato chips, which were great! We also ordered the Roasted Poblano-Lentil Hummus; quite possibly the best hummus I have ever tasted. The Veggie "Samosa-style" Empanadas were good, and the Cuban Chicken Tacos were terrific. We had quite a time trying to find The In Between. The map showed the location but we physically could not find it! We gave up and looked at the Siren's menu and went up the stairs. As we got to the middle, BAM. There it was! Literally, IN BETWEEN! We got there just as they opened and we were the first ones there. The vibe was not my type, but it was very nice, very fancy! You have a line of tables for 2, for a little corner booth for more friends. Pillows and comfy seating. It was great. Definitely a great place to come for a date, or if you want to just have some appetizers and drinks with a friend! The two bartenders were very nice and knowledgeable. Had answers to every drink question we had. The drinks were unique, and the food was delicious! The deviled eggs, beef empanadas, bread, cheese, everything was wonderful!
