We had a great dinner at Fountain Cafe. We called a week in advance and got a 6p reservation for a Saturday night. I watched at least four groups try to walk in and get turned away, and for good reason. The restaurant only seats 28, including the three barstools. I will definitely return to Fountain Cafe if I get to come back to Port Townsend. We ordered the Grilled Halloumi as an appetizer and loved it. I ordered a special, Ahi Tuna Salad, and it was great. And we also had the Moroccan Seafood Stew which was excellent - so flavorful. Cameron was our waiter and did an excellent job. The vibe inside was great. One of our favorite spots when we're in town and if we can get a reservation. Reservations is the operative term for this tiny cafe. It may seat 20? Including three bar seats. But, it is worth the effort. Food and service is top of the list for PT! And, locals know it, I have never seen it less than full of patrons. Loved the space it's super cozy and even though it's small that is what I loved the most about. I had the Atlantic salmon with the coconut risotto with kale and spinach (super delicious loved the fact that they massages the kale in like olive oil) . My husband and I enjoyed our time there and I highly recommend a reservation due to the fact they are small our server gave us advice for ice cream shop and wine store nearby to check out. I had high expectations for this restaurant given the reviews and they were mostly met. What they did well: entrees. Our entrees were both excellent, and mine (a halibut over lemon chèvre risotto and arugula, with a strawberry lime salsa) was one of the top entrees I've ever had. The risotto was rich and creamy, but brightened by the lemon and the salsa on the fish--perfection. My husband had the chicken amoré, which he said was also very good. Also excellent--the tiramisu. It was boozy and rich and just a great end to the meal. What they could do better: we ordered a small insalate mista and some olives and bread, both to share. The salad was entirely forgettable, and while the presentation was nice (carrots and beets on top), the beets were very long spiral ribbons that made eating the salad very challenging. I was honestly so annoyed at the idea of giving customers something that is stains as badly as beets in a form that means it extremely hard to eat. The olives and bread were okay. The olives were warmed, which was great, but were just pitted olives (non-pitted olives have so much more flavor and depth). Service was just fine--good suggestions, quick and efficient. They were quite busy and I knew they had a lot to do--I appreciated how well our server was doing with the tables. A small thing that shouldn't matter but does--a loose nail on the edge of the table snagged my outfit and put a hole in it. It's a beloved piece and I was saddened by this, and annoyed that the general upkeep in a place where we spent as much as we did has loose nails sticking out such that they can cause this kind of problem. read more

Cameron was our server and did not steer us astray with his recommendation of the classic warm salad-it was the best salad that we had ever eaten...I certainly could have had that as an entree, but I do not know any restaurant that has a mushroom risotto better than this. Every bite is layered with complex flavors, and it has never varied in its consistency. This is one of our favorite restaurants. Went here last night on a whim because there weren't many places open after 9. Very small but feels comforting with the ambiance and great service. I was caught off guard by how good the food was as well. You could see this restaurant thriving in bigger cities like Tacoma and Seattle with how good the quality is. My wife and I were touring some wineries in Port Townsend. We asked the owner of Sailor Vineyards, where the best restaurant in town was. He suggested the café. It did not disappoint. This reminded us of a wonderful restaurant in Seattle called Café Sabika decades ago. It was intimate the food was outstanding and the service charming. We will come here every time we visit the town. my wife had the salmon grilled with a mango salsa, and I had the Moroccan chicken along with some appetizers. The portions were generous. Nice to return after 8 years. Fountain Cafe still impresses, but Port Townsend has a bunch of new restaurants, so how is the Fountain faring? The vibe of the place is still there - cool, cozy, and busy. The warm salad was fantastic- hearty and almost an entree in itself and large enough to share with the table. Missus had the Bouillabaisse- it was sumptuous. Not a creamy stock, but definitely a hearty buttery and savory stock, it worked brilliantly paired with dry whites and Pinot Gris. I revisited the Moroccan chicken - nostalgia wasn't quite the same. The chicken side was as remembered, both sweet and briny, but it was paired with a too-creamy risotto that frankly wasn't the best pairing. This dish deserves a savory drier rice, much like that which comes in the Paella, and not the creamy Parmesan topped portion I had. Better to go with the Orleans "shrimp grits" next time, or the old standby of Lamb shanks. Service was quite terrific and we left happy the Fountain continues to serve up fun. read more

This is the second time that we have eaten at the Fountain Cafe and had to deal with extremely rude head waiter/manager. The first time was Mother's Day when the cafe was not open on time and a local walked in at 4 pm and he angrily stated that it wa after 4 pm. He then snarkily told her that opening time was 4:08 pm and to wait. We had a party of three plus a baby and our two small service dogs that are clearly marked. He continued to make rude comments while seating us. The food was excellent and we enjoyed ourselves in spite of him. We returned a week later for an early dinner before a movie and again faced his sharp rude behavior. He then seated us at a table against the wall at the door entry so that there was no place for our dogs to lie down out of the way of entering patrons. We left and wiil sadly not be returning. Again, we have loved the food but his behavior is intolerable. read more

The Fountain Cafe has never been better! Owned by a PT Native, ambience is as eclectic and eccentric as the beautifully unique Community it serves. We shared a wild mushroom risotto, with a simple prawn pasta. Our server Cameron made us feel at home with delicious locally (Sequim Wa) sourced bread and keeping our glasses full. Because of its quaint size, reservations are strongly suggested for a Friday or Saturday night. But have no fear, if it's booked, simply visit Nick's Grotto. read more

After a day of cycling around Port Townsend we ended our day at The Fountain Cafe, which was a delicious ending. While they only serve beer and wine, we settled on a sparkling wine to toast the days adventures. We started with the special Mushroom Bruschetta, which was nicely plated and yummy. We also ordered the Roasted Garlic and Melted Brie, which was exactly as you'd expect. If Cioppino is on the menu, I always order it and this version was worthy. The rest of our table ordered the daily specials, which I heard were always on point. We ended the meal with the Key Lime Pie and Gingerbread, which were both finished even though they were quite generous in size. Please note, the Gingerbread is a house secret and not always actually on the menu, but if you ask, they may surprise you with it. I highly recommend Fountain Cafe, but I do wish they had a full bar. read more

Wow, just wow. This 9 table bistro has some of the best food and service in Port Townsend. We got a reservation late in the day on a Wednesday, and were seated at 5:30pm. The server was engaging and helpful. Her wine recommendation was spot on. What we ate... I had the Orleans, which is their version of shrimp and grits. Absolutely amazing flavors from that dish, the kale, sausage and the sauce were great additions, and the prawns were perfectly cooked. I saved half of the dish for lunch which did not disappoint being reheated the next day. It just made me want to go back soon. Hubby had the halibut on coconut rice, and he liked the combination of those two. He said the flavors were delicious and the halibut was cooked perfectly. He also saved half for the next day's lunch. We both had the house salad with the homemade dressings. My vinaigrette was delicious and fresh, but that creamy Gorgonzola was to die for! I make a similar one myself and this was as close to mine as possible. The fresh herbs in it were the kicker! Had to ask if they would include a small amount in our to go bag to enjoy later, which they did. Other pluses...the bread and garlic butter were delicious, as was the tiramisu we shared. Any cons? This amazing small restaurant in Port Townsend really satisfies. I have had dinner there on a couple of occasions now and really appreciate the use of local ingredients as well as inventive sauces and side dishes. It is a very small place so either make reservations or plan to wait some nights they fill up very early so plan appropriately. I have had fish dishes there that were my favorite, and also tested other dishes from my dining partners which were also good, but I can testify to the great preparation of the fish. read more

I had the Chicken Linguine and my hubby got the Gorgonzola and walnut Penne. We both loved our meals and shared. What a fabulous, tasty find in PORT TOWNSEND!! This place is tiny and had one waitress and a very talented chef. We ordered the house side salad with Gorgonzola dressing, the clams small plate and the a chicken angel hair pasta. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. Our server was very attentive and kind. The pasta came in a scrumptious lemon broth. I had to drink it up with a spoon! I wish I could get the recipe. All the dressings are made in house. Definitely busy and need reservations. Super small quaint place with great ambiance! Wide selection of choices and it can be a hard decision if you aren't from the area and don't have a chance to come back and try something again. Brie and garlic appy was very good but Brie could be melted more. The mushroom bruschetta was absolutely fantastic and done to perfection. Their baguette that is served alongside both of the above appy's is sooo good too. I had the puttanesca which was pretty good. The sauce was done very well but the dish was very sauce heavy. It would have been nice if the ingredients shone through more and the sauce came in equally or second in line. The rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and was a good size with lots of meat, just not sure we were 100% a fan of the sauce but that's on us. Execution on the plates is well done and ingredients are of great quality. A good experience overall and nice place to have a special occasion dinner as long as it's not a large group of you. read more

Come for the Roasted Garlic with Melted Brie, stay for the Pollo Prosciutto and the incredible service! But seriously, we saw the Roasted Garlic in other reviews and it got us in the door. Every component on the plate was perfectly executed and well balanced, and they even brought us some extra bread when we finished our crostini. Mad respect for naming the dish after the star of the show (the garlic) when many restaurants would've lead with the Brie. We also opted to share the Pollo Prosciutto and I genuinely cannot stop thinking about how good it was. Salty creamy fresh balanced and perfectly seasoned. The broccolini had a lovely hint of lemon that cut the richness of the cream sauce, and the chicken was super juicy. My mouth is watering writing this, I will dream about this meal until I can come back and order it again. Fountain Cafe has a super cute and intimate vibe with all of the classic Port Townsend charm. We made a reservation for a special dinner menu which was prix fixe that we had seen advertised in the local paper. When we arrived our table wasn't ready and we had to wait 20 minutes outside (and it was cold). When we were seated in their very tiny dining room that was fully packed and was noisy with tight quarters we were presented with the prix fixe menu and the price had gone up 50%. The restaurant said the paper had printed the wrong price and left it at that. No "we're sorry" or let us comp you a dessert or anything resembling what I consider good customer service. We have had issues with this restaurant in the past but thought we'd give it another try. Never again! We're done with the Fountain Cafe. I came in during my holiday in Coupeville. The A-frame on the sidewalk caught my eye. I'm heavily tattooed and the restaurants that littered the streets didn't seem too inviting. This place was home as soon as I opened the door. I sat at the bar, the woman who served me was a gem. I read my book, ate delicious food, and cried because of my book. I gifted that book to the bartender. I had a wonderful time coming here alone. I highly recommend. read more
