I was waffling about whether to even write a review, because "OK" doesn't really rate my time. But here it goes. Molka Xete on a rainy day was pretty quiet at lunch. They have 2 tables for 4 and one table for 2, and both were taken. So we sat at the empty long community table in the middle. Seating is NOT plentiful, and I see why they take reservations later in the day. We'd checked out the menu online before coming, and knew we'd try the street tacos, with all the flavors, except the zucchini (!) and the Pastor, which is spicy pork. Now, pay attention when I say I'd looked at THEIR website before coming. The cashier announced the side bean soup was "a dollar extra". Apparently "complementary" means something else to them? They just looked blank when we said "thought that comes with it". A buck is fine, but CHANGE the ONLINE menu. Ok. Now you go and pick up your napkins, plastic spoons/forks, and water in the corner. (There's also the trash bins, so you can bus your own table after) If you ordered a soda, they are in a case in the back corner. They brought out the soup immediately. Oddly, it was in a little Styrofoam bowl, but only 1/3 full. (No problem, because it was so spicy I think it had jalapenos grated in to it.) Might want to change the size of the bowls, because it looked chintzy. The tacos arrived piping hot. The size is about the palm of your hand- "street taco" size. They say they are flour tacos, but they are thick and chewy. All are dressed only with cilantro and onion. 1. The rock fish was badly unseasoned. One little lime comes with the 5 tacos, and it was dry, at that. I couldn't use the table sauces, as the green was atomic, and the red was oddly umami, sort of savory, but not in a good way, and also way too hot for PNW palates! (Please note another reviewer mentioned she IS Mexican, and it was too hot for her!) 2. The chicken was more flavorful, but again, without any sauce, and dressed with cilantro and onion only. 3. Carne Asada- sirloin steak chopped? Well, it was full of connective tissue bits. Like, stick in your teeth forever. Dry. 4.Carnitas is the pork. This was good, because it had a little sauce of its own. 5. Best of the bunch was the Deshebrada- slow cooked beef, with quite a bit of tasty sauce. I'm sure ordering the $8 guacamole side dish would have picked up all the tacos and I'd recommend that if you want some kind of flavoring. I realize we only had the tacos, so I can't speak to the torta, sincronizada, or parrillada (I don't even know what that is)...and supposedly they have desserts, but I didn't see any. There is also a drink menu on the tables, with cocktails, which you don't see on their website. Final result was a 3. Some good flavors, most too spicy and dry. Not a fan of community seating, but no other choice given the tiny space. Tourists will probably keep this afloat. read more

It is really unfortunate that the service and staff were so awful because the food was actually really flavorful and delicious! I have never been treated so rudely when picking up my food. I came in a few minutes after the time we were told it would be ready. The old lady at the register was rude and dismissive when we got there and asked for our order. The other staff members were unapologetic when the food was 20 minutes later than promised and missing the bean soup. We were told "the sign says while supplies last" but the soup was part of the online description included with the food we purchased. I felt like I was in the twilight zone as I have never been treated like at a place I am choosing to spend money. I would also never talk to anyone the way they talked to me as if they were completely inconvenienced by my presence. read more

I love this place. The carne asada torta was delicious. The carne asada has so much favor, the bread was very tasty, and the guacamole layer on the bread was fantastic. But let me tell you the salsa is NOT for the weak! Even as a Mexican I thought it was incredibly spicy. Incredible flavor but that kick is strong! The frijoles charros were also very flavorful and i enjoyed the jalapeños. I also ordered the last piece of tres leches which was meant to be truly and it was so moist and tasty and the frosting was perfection. The service was great and they even offered my puppy water outside while I waited. I am excited to go back and try the tasty looking drinks! read more

Excellent Mexican themed restaurant. The guacamole was fresh and the tacos remind me of the time I was in Mexico eating some delicious street tacos. This quaint restaurant has a charm of a family owned restaurant and the quality of a 5 star restaurant. The margaritas were delicious and big. I enjoyed mine on the rocks with a salt rim. Customer service was great and every face was a friendly one. I have no qualms recommending this restaurant! read more

A friend and I went on a mom's only trip to the town where practical magic was filmed. We had to stop at this location, as it was the scene for the iconic body care shop that Sally had in the movie. I was absolutely tickled to find out that it was in Mexican restaurant now. And one that looked modern and delicious at that. We walked in that evening around 4:00 or 5:00 p.m.. it was very tight orders inside, so there was a lot of shimmying to get to the front counter. The counter and chefs are on the right side, and the long shared family style benches and handful of individual tables are on the left. At that time, the restaurant was maybe about 65% full. We were told that it was reservation only, and that reservations were full for that day. No problem, we understand, it's a popular destination for tourists. We requested to put down on the reservation list for the following day around the same time, to which they acquiesced. The following day, we arrived and it seemed about as full as it had been the day before. When we approach the counter, we were greeted and our orders were taken right away. No mention of reservations or if we had made one. We sat down and got our margaritas. They were refreshing, although nothing to write home about. The tacos themselves were small (street taco size) and pretty good. I did notice that they can make their tortillas there, which is always a bonus. The windows on the opposite end of the restaurant overlook the pier, so if you're looking for a nice and relaxing place to eat Mexican food, this is your spot. Everything was relatively reasonably priced for what I would expect in this area - so about $$ for drinks and tacos. If I visited again, I think I would be back. If not for the nice ambiance, but also because there aren't a whole ton of options in this downtown area. read more

Another wish we didn't live so far away from this place kind of review. Mix and match tacos, street taco size but packed with flavor and love. I'm a nut for sauces and was thrilled when we were presented with two salsas to dress up the tacos further. There was a pleasant appetizer bean soup. Wish I had room to try the chips and salsa. Knowing nothing about Molka Xete prior to arriving in Coupeville, I was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed this little gem of a restaurant. They serve delicious breakfast burritos. But first things, first! I had one thing in mind when arriving at the space... Practical Magic! I was so excited to stand in the very place Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman graced when they made their film in 1998. All these years later, I can still feel the enchantment of their presence and the excitement people have knowing Coupeville's connection to the film. I love everything Alice Hoffman (the author of Practical Magic) and Sandra Bullock, so this was an experience I had waited a very long time to enjoy. Now, back to those delicious breakfast burritos. My husband and I both ordered the chorizo and egg breakfast burritos, with Topo Chicos to wash them down. We enjoyed the stunning view of the grey-blue water of Penn Cove below, and were delighted to meet the young couple who own the place. They've created a lovely little spot serving delicious food in one of the most adorable villages on Whidbey Island. This is a restaurant you won't want to miss! There's one main street that runs along the bluff overlooking the inlet off Skagit Bay. The town is perfectly situated to enjoy some really stunning views. Visitors will find plenty of parking along the entire street, but be sure to identify whether the space you are parking in is designated for accessible or motorcycle usage only. read more

Total dud!! Not only is the restaurant itself dingy and kind of gross, you order food at the counter and then go sit. There is not much seating. It's extremely small. You order expensive food - $15 for street tacos that comes with ONE slice of lime - and the go sit and a sticky table. The staff did noting but eat burritos and walk around. Then you get to bus your own table after spending $75 on four meals. Absolutely would not recommend. read more

Mills Xete is fabulous on a sunny Coupeville winter afternoon next to the water. The magic is the freshly made corn tortillas. We went guacamole and chips and cinco tacos. This is guacamole done very well with a bit of tomato, mild chilis, onion: fabulous paired with the fresh chips. The zucchini taco is a friendly reminder that the vegetable should have more respect. The fish taco was salted enough to make the fish taste welcome - recommend some of their homemade salsa on this bad boy. The carne asada welcomes the green salsa and the guac, of course. The shredded pork and al pastor also delicious. What a great snack. read more

We discovered Molka Xete by chance while driving through the area, not even realizing there was Mexican cuisine available on the island. After a disappointing experience elsewhere, we called in a pickup order--seamless process from start to finish. The food was ready exactly when promised, and it exceeded expectations across the board. Easily some of the best Mexican food I've had all year. The flavors were vibrant and authentic, without the heavy salt and processed elements that tend to dominate many "family-style" Mexican spots. Fresh tortillas are made right at the front window, which set the tone immediately. We tried a range of dishes--from the grilled rockfish tacos to the steak sincronizadas and guacamole salsa--and every item was a standout. Even the shrimp cocktail was dialed in. The service matched the quality of the food; warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. As a bonus, the owner's mother had prepared a homemade Black Forest cake, which brought a nostalgic finish to the meal. This place is a gem. We're already talking about going back tonight. I was greeted with good enthusiasm, from there it went down hill, I asked for a suggestion the man said the street tacos and I had a choice of 5 different meats, I asked for the steak and pork what I got was ground beef, if it wasn't steak HE should have corrected me....itwas so OVER SEASONED AND SALTY I was supposed to add the salsa but either the mild was so hot I didn't bother to try the spicy, so they were dry and not really ground it was in huge chunks! as for the service i was given no napkins and NEVER asked how my meal was or if I needed anything else.....and I was freezing cold couldn't even take my coat off! I was disappointed to find that Molka Xete automatically added a 20% "tip" to our bills due to our group size -- even though this is a counter-service restaurant with no table service and we each paid separately at the register. The cashier selected the tip amount for us, and there was no disclosure on the menu, receipt, or signage about this charge. It just seemed very deceitful. Food was average at best. read more

What a delightful surprise to discover this charming, authentic Mexican gem in downtown Coupeville. By sheer happenstance, we were warmly greeted outside by one of the restaurant's gracious ambassadors (Alfonso), who kindly offered helpful parking guidance. That thoughtful gesture alone convinced us to step inside--and we're so glad we did. The service was exceptional, and the Mexican cuisine was absolutely delicious. Truly top-notch! Cute little family ran Mexican place in the heart of Coupeville. We went for breakfast on a Saturday on our way to Deception pass and had the chorizo burritos. I added potato to mine and it was so good, just like how my mom used to make them. The tortillas are home made and the salsas are bomb. Great place for some tacos. The menu is fairly simple, making ordering easy. It was not clear from the menu that one can mix different meat/veggie options in the entradas plates. The chicken were far superior tasting to the fish, but both were really good. The tacos are rather small, but five together make for a perfect meal. Younger children can split the five and do fine in terms of serving size. There is a children's quesadilla option for some children, but thankfully mine always go for the real deal at restaurants. Staff was nice and friendly. The time from ordering to food at the table was moderate at lunchtime. The seating area is a little cramped. The cool part is this is the same space as an older bakery that closed a few years ago. We stopped in for lunch and ordered the sincronizada, one with carnes asada and one with al pastor. It came with bean soup, tortilla chips and two salsas. Since we were sharing we also ordered the choriqueso. The bean soup was spicy, simple and fantastic. Perfect for a cold day. The tortilla chips came from the homemade tortillas were pleasantly thick and crunchy. A little salt and they would have been perfect. The red salsa wasn't flavorful. It tasted about as good as off season tomatoes in the grocery store. The Queso cheese was mild, almost flavor free which meant it relied on the chorizo for all the flavor. The two tacos were equally nondescript. Because we didn't like the red salsa we had to liberally apply the green salsa which was decent and spicy. The al pastor was, unfortunately, too tough to be edible. Overall the space was clean, offered peek a boo views from some seats and the service was prompt and friendly. read more

Molka Xete: Walking in- The interior is small but welcoming, the subtle Spanish vibes tie this place together well. The prices were also spectacular. Service- The hostess/cashier was really sweet and the food came out in very reasonable time. Appetizers- The guacamole was okay, nothing special but not bad, and the bean soup was a tad spicy but really flavorful and tasty. Meal- The carnitas sincronizada was amazing with a sort of barbacoa type flavor that went very well with the avocado. The kids cheese quesadilla was also good. The El pastor taco had a sort of pineapple flavor which made for a delicious bite. The carne asada was flavorful and chewy, but the rock fish didn't taste fresh and instead tasted fishy and unappetizing. The deshebrada was tough and dry with little flavor.
