This place just opened last week and so I know there are probably some things to work out since it's so new. They really advertised it as family friendly and that's what brought us here. At this point they offer a small option of food but not a specific kids menu. You can pay around $12 for a fried chicken sandwich with lettuce and slice of cheddar cheese and then the kids version is the same but without the lettuce. For a family of 5 and we had our littles split a bowl of Mac n cheese, we paid $56 and that was with no drinks. You order drinks at another station and then find a place to sit. They offer Cornhole and a small enclosed kids play area, fire pits, a small section of covered sitting. The location is great for downtown but parking will be an issue. The parking lot is tiny so there's street parking after that. Food was alright, BBQ sauce would have been a nice option for the chicken sandwich. The burger was a brisket, not ground beef but decent. Looks like in the summer it will be pretty cool, there's shaded areas to hide from the sun. I don't think I'll bring our kids back here but this os definitely a chill place to check out and grab a beer and people watch. It's a nice addition to Paso and the fact it's not another wine bar scores high on my list. read more

I was so happy to see a place like this in Paso. Great outdoor vibe at this location. They have a great variety of beer. Any type they got it. My selections were a stout, cider and great red house wine done by a local winery which was very good. I was really impressed with the food as well. The pad Tai frys were amazing. Cheese curds were good but needed a different dipping sauce. Chicken sandwhich was good along with the tri tip sandwich. The decor of this place is awesome. Some sitting area were in cargo containers and some couches were available and also chairs around fire pits. Honestly we will be going here every time we visit. Glad to see a mix of locals and tourists. Come out and support this place and make it last. read more

Paso has taken yet another step towards being a tourist destination for a beer and wine filled weekend getaway with the opening of The Backyard. This suburban beer garden is just a short stroll from the downtown city park, cinema, ice cream shops, restaurants, California Coast Brewery, and *lots* of wine spots. Our family went to check out the new spot over this last weekend shortly after it had opened its doors to the public. It was a beautiful day and the Backyard was packed! Luckily, there's plenty of seating-so it wasn't too difficult for the 3 of us to find a spot to claim. (However, we did see a few groups of 3+ that were wondering around for a while later that were trying to find a good landing place). There's a wide variety of beers on draft and can, cider, and wines. You can also grab some food from Roots on Railroad to go with your drink of choice. We were glad we went, but there is definitely room for improvement here. One main area that needs attention is the bar/ordering process. When we visited, there was only one paper drink menu-that was also not updated so not reliable-and one large screen hdtv with the beer list. The main issue was the layout of the tv menu is small and difficult to see before it cycles to the next screen. This results in almost every person who gets to the bar saying, "Hmm...I'm not sure what I want-what do you have...?" And then are referred to the paper menu. It would be good to have at least a small stack of those that people could look at while in line. I can see The Backyard easily becoming a local and tourist hot spot in these upcoming months. It is now a solid 2. It is now below average. The smash burger from Roots was a thing of beauty at $19. It was a steep price, but so worth it! The new burger is $16 and I felt like I got totally scammed. Blah, tasted like salt and pepper, with a bun that can only be described as 5 day old, hard, and stale. No maillard rxn at all. You have let me down - disappointing to say the least. It was so nice to know that we had a quick restaurant in town where you could pop in, grab a drink, and a really good meal without having to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance. Love this place!! We visited Paso with a group of 6 and this was the perfect spot for hanging, having some ice cold beer and delicious food. We rented a patio section for 2 hours which had a cabana, couch/chairs and misters. The price to rent was so reasonable. The staff was awesome! We all had lobster rolls which were delish! I was walking around downtown Paso Robles and decided to try The Backyard because it looked cool and had a fun outdoor setting. However, I would not recommend the lobster Mac n cheese. I thought I would splurge and spend the $27 for something that could have been delish, but the first time the server brought the (paper) bowl and plastic fork out the food was barely warm. The second dish was hot enough, but the lobster was chewy and tasteless and the cheese was soupy (not thick and cheesy). What a big disappointment. read more

I went ahead with my order .....and that was my first mistake. I ordered the fries (thinking they would be the same string fries as before) and two chicken tacos~ When the fires arrived, they were flat and greasy~ When I explained to the young lady that brought our food, that this was not what I had ordered......she said, "You ordered them so now you have to eat them" turned around and walked away.
