My wife and I tried The Backyard for the first time today, and we had a fantastic lunch. The soup-of-the-day was shrimp and crab bisque, which we both ordered. The soup was loaded with seafood, all cooked just right -- not mushy, nor rubbery. And the soup's liquid base was so creamy and well-seasoned that it could have been served just by itself and would still have been wonderful. My wife loves sweet and spicy flavors, so she ordered the Thai Chicken, which came with pita, rice, and a fresh vegetable. She really loved the chicken, but there was so much she could only manage half the meal, and she thought that the rice had a great flavor. I ordered the Gouda Mac, which was a grilled chicken breast served over mac and cheese with smoked Gouda, bacon, and spinach. Again, it was a generous portion, but although I thought I'd have to bring some home it was so good that I just kept going until it was all gone. It was absolutely delicious, and a sort of indulgence dish because it was so rich. The other component that made the meal so good is the service. Everyone was pleasant and efficient. We are about 30 minutes away, but we will definitely be back to this little restaurant that produces such great flavors. read more

Breakfast - there when they opened but customer ordered all of their cinnamon buns, wiping out the limited amount that they make. Food is as good but burnt toast and we were sat under a ceiling fan which they would not turn down. Food got COLD!!!!!! Toast was burnt. The place seemed nice upon arrival. Was moderately busy. There were a few groups ahead of us and the waitress asked all of them if they wanted to sit inside or out. When it came time for us the waitress said it would be a couple minutes as they had to clear a table (understandable and no problem). When she came back we were not asked if we wanted to be inside or out. She led us outside to a table that was directly in the sun. It was a hot day. The waitress did not come back after 5 minutes and my husband had to go in and find her. He asked her if we could get a table inside as it was very hot out, she rolled her eyes and huffed and she responded that there were no tables inside and he pointed to a table and said what about that one. She said that table has not been cleared and we are short staffed. If she had asked us where we wanted to sit before clearing the table there would have not been an issue and you never treat customers like they are an inconvenience. Needless to say he returned to our table to get our children and I and we left. We found a place up the street where the staff were very friendly and overly attentive. read more

A fantastic little cafe in growing Milton! We were promptly seated at our choice of a table outside. It was a beautiful day and I could not pass up the breeze flowing through the patio. Our waitress took our drink orders and they were brought out quickly. We ordered 2 appetizers, the fries & avocado. Both were fantastic. They tasted extremely fresh and like someone had truly taken time to make the dishes. Our main entrees, for lunch, were sizable for the price. I enjoyed a delicious turkey club sandwich while the others at my table ordered a cuban panini and the pulled pork grilled cheese. The desserts were also quite fantastic. The cookies and macaroons were to die for! The ladies on staff were so peppy and wonderful. They acted like a family and worked together. I loved that. read more

Amazing find. Came for bunch on Saturday around 12. Sat in in back yard in the sun. Comfy place, shaded porch tables, casual and welcoming service. Ordered two omelette with really fresh ingredients and amazing potatoes....the surfer and Mrs. potato head. Homemade health bar muffin...to die for (really!) Bathrooms were great too. What a gem, probably my new favorite restaurant in the area! The service was excellent and very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. You can tell that this is a hideaway for the locals, since it wasn't crazy crowded or full of tourists. They have a dessert and pastry counter up front, and a small, cozy bar in the dining area. I will be back to try more of the menu because I loved everything we had so far. Our favorites were the Bang Bang Chicken (perfectly crispy, what a wonderful sauce!) and the Yardbird. I thought the Yardbird was a wrap, but it was more like a quesadilla! What a pleasant surprise (even if it's a little less healthy- loads of yummy melted cheese!). The accompanying fries were another highlight- they were perfect, very similar to the kind you can get down the boardwalk! My partner's Summer T was a healthier alternative (and very reasonably priced at $10), but still super delicious. It tasted light and fresh, and I loooved the bread it was served on. We accidentally went to this restaurant.... looked like a diner with a ton of cars in the parking lot. What we got was a world-class lunch in quaint space in the middle of nowhere, and I mean that as a compliment. Everything was fresh, from the guac and beans to the mahi mahi salad, and made to perfection. Coffee was local and delicious. We gave eaten here twice in the past week--once for dinner and once for Sunday brunch. Both meals were quite good. Standout is an appetizer that is reminiscent of Sicilian arancia--deep fried cheesy polenta balls that look like small oranges. Food is well prepared and imaginative/blue mashed potatoes are gorgeous AND delicious. Mussels in beer and shallot broth--stout is a little overpowering, flavorwise, for the shellfish. Brunch was delicious...nice range of egg and meat dishes, as well as one veg offering, a pear,cheese and arugula croissant sandwich served with oven-prepared potatoes. Sausage gravy and biscuits ranks with the best I have had this far north. Bakery offerings looked scrumptious: we had a wonderful pecan sticky bun. Son had the Nutella and marshmallow fluff waffle --a sugar overload even an 11 year old could not finish. The inlet reason I am holding at four stars is that the service is amateur--most servers are young and lack experience. This should improve with time and attention. This is a nice enough restaurant that there should be no need for "food auctions" ("(who had the)waffle?") at table side. Wait staff use mini tablets to take orders so it should be easy enough to put the diners' requests in seat order so that whoever delivers the food need only know who is seated at position 1 to be able to serve the correct orders. Clearing by reaching across your diner is, likewise, a no-no. Some tables got bread baskets and some didn't. I expect some of this will resolve-the restaurant has barely been open two weeks now. We want to love this place but we are done! The food is "eh" and with the exception of Nicole the staff is just crabby & downright disinterested in creating a pleasant experience for their guests. Attitude abound, take your pick from the person working the bakery counter to the food runner who was indignant when my partner requested ketchup & brought barely a sample of the red stuff in a plastic sample cup. Oh & don't hold your breath for a coffee refill, you will need reviving but the coffee is so weak you will be better off stopping at Dunkin' when you leave. What used to be a redeeming dish at the cute joint, the grits were dry, cold & held no appeal. Sorry to say but we gave you 3 chances, you came up short! read more

Don't drive by this one. Doesn't look like much from outside but it is a real find in this small town. This was our first time but we'll be back. Great menu and good coffee. The staff was friendly and efficient. If you don't see what you want on the menu, you can build your own salad, sandwich, or entree. My wife built a lunch of grilled shrimp and a side salad while I have the lunch special, fish taco bowl. The food was perfect and the service was timely. On the way out, we picked a latte. Stopped here for brunch on the way back to Philly from the beach. I had called them in advance giving them a heads up that a table of 8 was on the way (they don't take reservations but they were nice enough to let me know that a large table would probably be available in around 30 min). We were seated about 10 minutes after arrival. The vibe of the whole restaurant is super cute, open, and hipster with potted plants, sassy quotes, and decor. The menu looked delectable. I ordered the Dude, as did two other people at my table but they said they only had enough gravy left for one. I was pretty bummed they ran out of gravy before noon and adjusted my order (the ended up having enough for two, *sigh* but I had already changed my order). I got some sort of wrap with feta and caramelized onions which was still decent but no where near as yummy as the Dude was. A friend ordered one of the muffin/brownie desserts and really really enjoyed it. Also, there were only two waitresses running the whole thing which included a coffee/dessert counter, the bar, and the restaurant so the service was very, very slow and they seemed visibly frustrated and were snapping at each other in front of the customers which I thought was a bit rude. Aside from that, everyone really really enjoyed their food and the staff was very kind and courteous to us (if not to each other). I would definitely come back here and hope that they have enough ingredients for my order and also perhaps are better staffed. read more

This place is wonderful!!! We ordered take out breakfast a few days ago. It was so delicious, two days later we went back and ate in restaurant. Highlights are their Gouda grits, homemade biscuits with some excellent jam, Nutella stuffed French toast, and their muffins--the mocha chip was one of the best muffins I have ever had! They also have very good iced coffee. The space is beautiful and the staff is so friendly. We'll be back!!! read more

Had a very poor experience at The Backyard. Came off good word from a friend and decided to make the trip from dover to enjoy the food we heard about. We arrived at the restaurant and sat at the table and looked over the menu. A standard trip to a new restaurant, items on the menu looked good and we took a few minutes to figure out what we wanted. I had order a Dogfish head 90 minute beer. The first issue had was the beer took about 20 minutes to get to the table. By the time it reached the table it was luke warm. Then the order for the food was placed, all of the four of us ordering different items. We ordered two appetizers, one being crab cheese fries and the other an order of Mac and cheese. The second issue we had was the Mac and cheese came out at the same time as our main food order. Ontop of that one of the people we had in our group waited a good ten to fifteen minutes after our food came out to get her order, We then needed our drinks refreshed and the waitress said she would bring them out. The soda was in cans, and took 25 minutes to bring that drink and my second beer. All throughout the dinner, we just didn't feel like any proper attention was paid to our table. I then requested to talk to the manager and that experience was actually a let down as well. I informed her of our experience and she seemed not so excited to hear that we weren't happy, but not in a good way. She seem aggravated that I decided to complain versus being understanding and accommodating. Not that we were looking for hand outs or free food. Just something to show the effort was there. All in all, not a good experience at all. Very disappointed in our first experience at this restaurant and we will not be back. read more

My husband and I frequent this place because we like the food, which is very fresh. This morning I was there at 9 a.m. to pick up some of their cinnamon rolls, but they were out. I asked how they could be out at 9 a.m. and was told someone came in and purchased all they had. So I asked if I could have 4 put to the side or ordered and was told, "NO, THEY MUST BE SPECIAL ORDERED AND YOU NEED TO DO THAT 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE". I didn't ask for a dozen or two, I just wanted 4 & I would gladly pay for them. How is that different from a take out order? Anyway, I was told again, "you must order 48 hours in advance". I said, suppose I drive up here again (as I am driving 1/2 hour from Lewes), I'm here by 8 and there is 1 person in front of me who buys all the rolls and again I was told, "They must be special ordered 48 hours in advance". This is how you treat your loyal customers? Now you had a case full of cookies that apparently no one was buying. If you have an item that sells a lot (and it does because I've been in there later in the day and they are always gone), I'd be making more of those and at least try to be accommodating to your loyal customers. I was not even asked if maybe just two would do. With all the restaurants going out of business it seems like with the way you treat people you should be next to go. What a gem! After enduring a week of subpar breakfast and coffee in Dewey Beach, we found The Backyard on our way home. This place is positively adorable, with lovely hardwood ceilings and floors and a bright airy feel. When I first took a sip of the coffee, I could swear I heard a heavenly choir sing. With our family's collective allergies to gluten, tree nuts, eggs, and dairy we were all able to eat something yummy. I had an omelet, the kids had pb&j (not on the menu but they accommodated the request!), and my husband had a breakfast sandwich. Everything was so good! Even the bathrooms were cute, which feels like a strange thing to comment on. If we ever do another beach week in DE we will be sure to stop by. read more

4 of us were looking for a place with great food, open on New Years Day, not too far from Slaughter Beach. After some Yelping we found this place. Decor is great and the space is really nice. I enjoyed the tall ceilings and overall ambiance. Staff was friendly, greeting us promptly and seating us just as we walked in the door. Our waitress was very nice, very attentive and checked on us often, but not too much. We all enjoyed the food. Not one item from the apps to entrees to drinks had any issues. All food was cooked as requested. The deep fried avocado "fries" with aolie sauce are a very tasty app. The salads, soup, burger and sandwiches we had were seasoned well and were well liked by all. Menu options are perfect with lots to choose from but not like a diner menu of 400 line items. Beer and drink menus were decent, though would have wished for one or two other drafts. That's just me as I'm a fan of lighter beers in winter. All in all if you want some great food, service and prices this is the place to visit! read more

As far as I can tell, there's not a bad thing on the menu. Our large multi-generational party enjoyed a crab cake added to a beet salad, a pressed Cuban sandwich, a stellar reuben, a caprese sandwich, avocado fries, and many other items, all of which delighted. I decided to go all out and order "The Trucker" which was pulled pork with a light bbq sauce, caramelized onions and mac and cheese in a grilled sandwich. I subbed jicama slaw for fries and was really happy with the crunchy, tangy salad accompaniment. Plus, my siblings shared their fries with me :) As my brother (Chris R.) said, this restaurant wowed us at every turn, lithely accommodating 13 at the height of the lunch hour and providing us with great service. The decor is minimalist, light, and rustic at the same time and was an added bonus. Even the Dogfish Head illustrations on the walls were of note. We were so thrilled with this place! My boyfriend and I had taken a trip down to Milton, DE to visit Dogfish Head Brewery. On the way back to Philly, we decided to stop somewhere for food and happened upon The Backyard! We had ordered calamari, the BBQ chicken sandwich, and a side of mac and cheese. The calamari was fantastic - lightly breaded and freshly cooked! The BBQ sauce did not overpower the pulled chicken and it was topped off with a wonderful helping of cole slaw. The mac and cheese was lacking heavily in taste and culinary creativity. It was horribly bland. Overall, The Backyard is a chic and beautifully designed restaurant that serves average to above-average quality food. However, it did not leave upon me a lasting impression to return back a 2nd time. And for that, that is why I give it a 3-star rating. read more

Wow. What a terrific find! Perfect breakfast place to hit on the way home from the beach. Pancakes were, indeed, BIG as stated on the menu. Delicious egg/BLT. No trip to visit my parents in Milton is complete without a stop for breakfast at the Backyard. I have yet to try another meal beside breakfast (not by choice, just schedule hasn't allowed) but it has always been delicious. From their open-faced Sunny Day breakfast sandwich to the Surfer and Baconater omelettes, everything I've had is fresh and perfectly cooked. Definitely go for the Gouda grits Their bakery items are quite indulgent and a nice treat that we usually end up taking to the beach or pool with us. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, and the decor of the restaurant is bright, clean and cheery. When I walked into the restaurant for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised - definitely above my expectations for a smaller town like Milton. Can't wait to get down here again to try lunch or dinner! TL;DR -- best gem in Milton. You gotta stop here and eat. read more

My girlfriend and I ate dinner at The Backyard tonight and while my side dishes were tasty, the roasted chicken was dry and overcooked. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she said she'd tell the chef but nothing else happened. there was no attempt to comp me for the disappointing entrée or offer to cook me another chicken. I didn't pay good money for overcooked chicken so I was very unhappy with this restaurant's attitude which was "big deal". If I eat there again, I'll be sure never to order the roast chicken. read more

My brother and I went there for lunch on 10/9/19 and I ordered from the Build Your Own menu. I ordered corned beef from the meat section which was a price of $6 and rye bread from the bread section at a cost of $2 for a total of $8. The sandwich came with a few small potato chips on the plate. The sandwich was the worst I have eaten in my 73 years. There was more mustard on the sandwich than corned beef. I was also charged $11.00 for the sandwich which should have been $8 or $9 if they charged for the small amount of chips. I don't plan on returning to the Backyard since this is the 2nd time I have been dissatisfied in the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I had the Rueben and again, there was very little corned beef on the bread. I have learned my lesson. I am finished. read more

We had a late lunch here and were pleased. I wanted a wild turkey burger, but they were out, so I had the Backyard Bird, which is a grilled chicken breast with bacon jam, cheddar cheese, and tomato. I had never had bacon jam before, and I am now a fan. The entire sandwich experience was quite nice. I thought the fries were a bit limp, and although I appreciated that they had the skins on, I would have liked them to be crispier. Service was very good and pleasant. read more
