Thaitation held its Grand Opening on Thursday, January 22nd in the same location that used to house Brown Sugar Cafe...and Brown Sugar fans will be happy to know that the same chef is at the helm. The decor remains relatively unchanged although the giant urn containing live fish is gone and replaced with a hostess stand. The servers are friendly and very attentive - perhaps a bit over the top, but hey, better that than be completed ignored. The new menus are HUGE...page after page after page...try not to get overwhelmed by what appears to be a limitless supply of suggested Thai cuisine. You'll get through it and perhaps end up with the summer rolls - large and quite delicious. The beef macadamia was piled high on a plate and the flavor was tasty. The food is all very flavorful, and I love the cute little vases with fresh yellow flowers, the nice decor, and the great service. Meh. I really wanted to like this place, but the food just didn't hit the spot for me. Based on the reviews and the high ratings, I had pretty high expectations. Being in Boston, I was craving lobster. However, I should have known not to order seafood since I was staying so far away from the shore. I decided to go with the Fisherman's Madness, Lobster Pad Ped, and Cozy Shrimps. Decided against getting rice, which was a mistake lol. The shrimps in the Fisherman's Madness had great flavor, but the entire dish was like 80% peppers and onions. Lobster Pad Ped really needed rice, but since I didn't order any, it was just meh. Good flavor, but didn't really meet my expectations I guess. Restaurant was really nice. Actually called me right after I placed my order (via the app) to ask if I wanted rice. Sigh, I swear, this decision will forever haunt me. Delivery lady was super sweet. Waited by the elevator in my hotel for me and tried to have me rush because she saw how slow the elevator is at the hotel. Really thoughtful lady. I have had better Thai food back home in San Diego. Always a reliable and delicious finale to a day spent at the MFA. The Tofu Triangles are just the right amount of crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Mediocre Thai food that's nothing to write home about, but satisfies that craving for Thai when necessary. I came here on a Sunday lunch and it was quite quiet, which I greatly appreciated. The dining area was well lit by natural light and also some ceiling lights; overall a great feel for a semi-formal restaurant. I ordered the green curry with shrimp (lunch), which included rice. The curry had shrimp, eggplant, bamboo shoots, green beans, and green/red bell peppers. The curry sauce itself was a bit on the watery side - the consistency and taste wasn't as well done as I would have liked. Some of the vegetables (green beans and peppers) were leaning toward being undercooked, which I did not enjoy. However, the shrimp and eggplant was cooked well in my opinion. Also, the rice was a bit too dry and hard, losing some of its fragrance. Points added for how the food was nicely arranged! This was my first time trying Thai in Boston, and I was not greatly impressed. Probably one of the best thai places around here. Trust me, I've been to all the other ones. My friend got the Pad Thai and I got the Pad Woon Sen. We also tried the spring rolls. The spring rolls were okay, just average although plating was really pretty. The Pad Woon Sen was pretty good although I would have liked if it had more fungus ear. I really miss having that!! (my mom used to cook it all the time) I tried some of my friend's Pad Thai and it was super good, although a bit sweet. Compared to the other Pad Thais around here, it is probably #1. I'm sure their other stuff is good too, and since it is a bit pricey you would probably be getting the best food compared to the other cheaper places. The decor is also nice, I saw a few interesting painting on my walk to the bathroom ha. Although I do have to mention their bathroom is super hot and stuffy, I'm not quite sure why. Service is great A+. Heard their Old Lady Eggplant is their most popular dish so if you're up to trying something new... Was in the mood for Thai food on my way to a Sox game at Fenway. Have passed in front of Thaitation a number of times before without stopping in, but decided to try it this time - even though I had limited time. Glad I did. Waitress was very friendly and suggested I try the country style Pad Thai, which she described as a more authentic version of the dish. Love the sleek vibes here. Thaitaion is perfectly located, steps away from the MFA, Fenway Park proper, and local T stations. There's all the classics on this menu, however my friends and I do like picking items like the crispy pad thai, drunken chicken, pad see ew. Most of the menu offers protein substitutions, perfect for picky eaters. Portions are plentiful and I can usually make 2 meals out of one plate. I had lunch here alone before meeting friends at the Red Sox game, went to pay and my credit card didn't work. I only had my credit card to pay because it always works. I asked the woman in her 20's who was serving and running the bar/takeout if I could use Venmo, to which she laughed at me and said 'no'. I called my credit card company from the table and they were unsure why the card wasn't working but would reissue one. I had to call my boyfriend to have him read off his credit card to her to pay. The woman grabbed the phone from me, kept rolling her eyes and slamming her hand on the table while her other hand was putting in the credit card number. I felt kind of afraid of how aggressive she was and she had little empathy for this wacky situation I was in and I was trying to pay. The receipt printed, she gave me my phone back and I kept talking to my boyfriend because I was uncomfortable and I walked out of the door. The woman comes running out of the door with the receipt and yells, 'what, you are not going to tip me? and sign this!'. She gives me the receipt to sign, but when I go to give it back she has already walked away. I leave the receipt inside so she can take it. My boyfriend advised me to take a picture of the receipt to be safe and I'm glad I did. I had a really bad experience here with the service. As far as the food, it was fine though the rice tasted old and even for a lunch portion it was very small, and I left still hungry (and sad). I honestly do not recommend Thaitation based on my experience. There are so many great restaurants to try in the Fenway area, please go to those instead of this one. read more

They were over half an hour late, the food order was made the day before and the website said it would be there by noon. Because they were so late the staff meeting had to be interupted so people could get their food. Delivery woman was flustered, told me she called me but there was no call on my phone. She said she was sorry but sounded much more angry about parking than apologetic. She didn't so much yell at me as much as she yelled next to me, which also disturbed the meeting. The food was fine other than it had cooled down a lot and the scallion pancakes were soggy. I have only ordered take out from here and always good! My go to is the chicken skewers with the peanut sauce, and the yellow curry with chicken. One time I didn't realize that rice was extra/didn't come with the order, so I had to sub with my own side. This last time though i remembered to place an order of rice. The order preparation is pretty fast and i received my order with Uber eats within 30 min! Totally great and def recommend it! Will try to go have some in person sometime soon! read more

Fairly good place. The servers are very polite and professional. Really liked their service. However they do not have much in variety if you want the whole fish. Only salmon was available as a whole fish. Also did not like the red curry much. However the salads and the sauces were fantastic!! I was really excited to try this place -- my co-workers had said this was their go-to place for Thai in Boston and it's very close to my apartment. I got the red curry with chicken (plus brown rice, which I had to order separately) and my husband got the crispy pad thai. Both dishes were underwhelming, not terrible. I'd say a solid 4 based on a -10 to 10 scale. The service was fine. I'm sorry to say: This place is nothing special. I ordered delivery from this place and I have to say that the yellow curry is amazing. The beef was nice and soft, the vegetables were cooked but still crispy, and the pineapples were sweet. For quite some time, the convenience of it being a block away was not enough to overcome the fact that they wanted $11 for an order of pad thai. But one night last week i really wanted some, so i figured i would finally give it a whirl. While i was encouraged by the large foil brick-like tray with some decent heft to it in the takeout bag, at first, i don't really feel like i can recommend it if, like me, you define the quality of a Thai place by the quality of its pad thai. Yes, i am aware that is narrow-minded of me. So probably a third of the tray was uncooked bean sprouts, which aren't bad, but not really what you're paying for. The pad thai itself had a decent helping of chicken (i don't like shrimp, yes, i know i am a fussy eater), but it seemed as if the sauce had all trickled down to the bottom of the tray as opposed to permeating into and adhering onto the noodles. Once i got to the bottom, the flavor of the sauce and remaining noodles was overpowering and not in a good way. There didn't seem to be any egg or tofu, which was also disappointing, given the cost. Suffice it to say, i'm willing to walk more than a few blocks for something better. read more

My dining partner and I stepped into Thaitation on a Saturday night, around 8pm. The first thing I noticed was that the place was dimly lit, warm and nice-smelling. Not the yummy food smells you'd expect like lemongrass and basil, but pleasant enough heavy candle smells. The second thing I noticed was that the place was pretty empty. On a Saturday night. Ouch! Nevertheless, my friend and I sat down at a little table by the windows. The service was quick and uber-friendly (although speed may be explained by emptiness), full points there. The food -- not so much. We started with the fresh summer rolls -- which are essentially grated lettuce and one steamed shrimp in a soft rice wrapper. Light and fresh, but pretty tasteless without the supplied chilli-honey sauce. Our main course experiences were mixed. The panang curry with chicken (and chickpeas, red peppers, baby corn, bamboo shoots, kaffir lime leaves) was just tolerable. The dominating flavors -- coconut milk and generic hotness -- drowned out the fresh veggies that should have sparkled in this dish. Not the best curry I've had. That said, the curry was the highlight because the chicken smelled and tasted a little off, like it had been sitting raw in its own juices in the refrigerator for a few days past its freeze-by date. Not appetizing! Oh well. I fished around the chicken and salvaged what I could of my dinner. The other main, a drunken noodle dish, was definitely a better choice. The large, squishy noodles were perfectly stir fried, and flavored well with oil and spices. Sadly, the off-tasting chicken again ruined what would have been a perfect noodle dish. My dining partner didn't seem too bothered by the chicken, but he is also known to ingest anything remotely edible. Maybe my recently-veering-towards-vegetarianism palate has something to do with my strong reaction to the chicken? Idk. For dessert, we tried the fried ice cream and the chilled lychees. The fried ice cream was delicious -- can't really go wrong with something like that if the place knows how to fry things. The chilled lychees arrived in a bowl of ice water garnished with mint and orange. Alas, they were half frozen and clearly from a can. Not yummy. In terms of value -- this place is definitely overpriced, with most entrees priced higher than $14. And rice isn't included with the entrees -- you need to order it separately. So, in sum, passable food, great service, not-so-great value. I will probably stick to veggies on my next visit if I am in a hurry for Thai and don't want to hike downtown to Chilli Duck. read more

Sorry to disagree with most of the other posters, but this was my experience. I hated this place. The portions were small, the food was way overpriced, and the staff were mediocre. I went in this place and sat down, and it looked nice, similar to how it was before when it was Brown Sugar, but less Thailand-ish glitz. That was fine, it was still nicely decorated, just not as nice. I was really surprised at how many wait-staff they had considering the time of night, how cold (freezing) it was outside (meaning there were less people out and about going to dinner), and how many (few) people were in the restaurant to begin with. They had like 8-10 wait-staff working. It was ridiculous, I met 3-4 of them because ever time someone new came to assist me, however, they were really not very attentive. Additionally, they couldn't understand my English, and I could barely understand theirs. Which is fine, I suppose, I've dealt with worse. To continue, the prices on the menu were absurd! It was so ridiculous! The prices were 50% higher than any other thai restaurant in Boston that I've been to! Panang curry chicken was $2 more expensive than any other curry dishes, and I don't understand that. They also refused to make a substitution on an appetizer I wanted. I asked if they would replace half of one appetizer with another type of appetizer... It was the sort of thing you could easily do - 6 pieces of individually fried/steamed whatever, and i just wanted 3 of them to be replaced with 3 pieces of individually fried/steamed of something else - and each appetizer was the same price! He went back and checked and then came back to tell me no - i'm sure he was assuming i'd just order the appetizer un-changed, but I didn't want it. When I told him I was fine with just the Papaya Salad and side order of tom yum soup (not very good and extremely small!) he looked at me like he was shocked that was all i was ordering, but I couldn't afford anything else and i only desired the type of appetizer i desired, not the kind they offered. My reasoning for their expensive prices is the fact that they were over-staffed, and in order to pay all those people they must have to charge too much. I won't support that kind of business tactics ever again. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

We ordered lunch today and got it delivered. Overall, not impressed. Their delivery was early, which is nice. I don't know if I'd be ordering again though. We ordered the fried chicken pad thai, veggie pad thai, and a wonton soup. The veggie pad thai had some steamed chicken in it even though it was supposed to be just tofu. 1/3 of the veggie pad thai was bean sprouts, they weren't sautéed with the noodles. I didn't want to bother with calling about the veggie noodles so I just had to pick it out. The fried chicken pad thai was very salty. The wonton soup tasted good, but only came with two small wontons. Overall, the taste was just boring. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't horrible. Gosh I love this place! This restaurant replaced Brown Sugar but I think it's just as good. They have these delicious chicken wings that I just love. My favorite Thai place in Boston, and let me tell you, I'm picky when it comes to Thai food. I really like Brown Sugar but this place beats it out for sheer value. Portions are large, in fact I usually split an entree and a few apps with my girlfriend and we always come out feeling full and satisfied. Service is extremely fast and friendly, and even though we've eaten here at least 50 times in the past year, we've never had a bad experience. This place might be the only restaurant I'll miss when I move back home to California in a couple months. Best menu item by far is country style Pad Thai - it's the perfect mix of spicy yet still very flavorful. Other restaurants tend to make it too hot to taste the flavor of the sauce, but Thaitation gets it just right. read more

I love the red curry, with brown rice, tofu, and chili sauce on the side. This place is slightly further from Northeastern than Pho&i, but is definitely worth the extra walk through the fens.
