From a feast fit for kings to a takeout tragedy. My fiancée and I went to Sweet Rice a few weeks ago and had an absolutely incredible meal. Easily 5 stars, 10/10 across the board. Beers, sake, Thai iced tea, sushi, crispy chicken Pad Thai, appetizers, mango sticky rice, the works. A feast fit for kings. Everything was fresh, flavorful, generously portioned, and the service was outstanding. The spice was perfect, just enough to add to the flavor without overpowering the dish. We couldn't say enough good things and were thrilled to have found such a great neighborhood spot. Well, tonight we decided to order takeout, and holy-hell, what a difference. Ordered directly through their website. Driver got lost, food showed up lukewarm, and things only got worse from there. The Pad Thai was an absolute disaster. We specifically requested LESS SPICE, and apparently someone in the kitchen took that personally. Neither of us is afraid of spicy food. We love spice. But there's a difference between heat that enhances a dish and heat that makes you question your life choices. This was the latter. Face-meltingly spicy, bone dry, and completely devoid of any flavor beyond pure pain. I managed a few bites before calling it quits because I actually started feeling sick. How do you manage to make something both dry and overwhelmingly spicy? Impressive, honestly. The mango sticky rice wasn't much better. Underripe mango and rice that had hardened into something resembling a building material. Not exactly the sweet ending we were hoping for. The one saving grace was the soup, which was still absolutely phenomenal. A solid 10/10. No complaints there. What kills me is that we KNOW how good this place can be. Our first visit was genuinely one of the better meals we've had in the neighborhood. Tonight felt like we ordered from an entirely different restaurant. I'm not expecting takeout to be identical to dining in, but I do expect the food to be edible, especially when we've specifically asked them to dial back the heat. Sweet Rice is my absolute FAVORITE restaurant in Jamaica Plain, having lived in JP for several years. I always get their Pad Thai with Chicken. I honestly haven't eaten a pad thai from another city or state that I've enjoyed as much as Sweet Rice's. I also have to drink a Thai Iced Tea every time I visit. Yum! Got takeout from here this past weekend. For appetizers I got a Thai pancake. It came pretty thick which I was not expecting but it tasted really good. It came with a sweet ginger sauce which paired nicely with the umami flavor. I got the drunken noodles for my main. It had a little bit of a kick which was nice and the vegetables were the perfect amount of crunch for texture. The chicken was a little dry and I do wish it had a little bit of sweetness. It is very groovy to have this restaurant close to Old Stinky"s plush, but not overly ostentatious condo. It was very hot today so Stinky did not even want to go out, not even for a smoke. So he grabbed his MyPad and ordered up some Thai. Tried the Tropical Noodles and Vegetable Spring Rolls. He probably should not have gotten the white rice since he did not expect the main dish to be so noodle heavy. Oh well. The Spring Rolls are always wicked pissah! So crisp and tasty. The worst experience at a Thai place ever. I was visiting Boston, and stopped by here because we were hungry and in a rush. There were no signs anywhere claiming the restaurant closes at 3 pm, but we came in at 2. The server should've just refused us service so this whole mess couldve been avoided. She sat us down, and proceeded to rush us. She gave attitude when we asked for straws for our water. She brought the bill out at the same time as the food and asked us to pay right away. We didn't write a tip on the receipt because we were going to give cash. She then took the receipt and said "NO TIP? i'm working on my break and you guys give me nothing???" We were astonished. We have never ever been asked that, especially because we DID have the intention to tip. She was so so rude and made us hand over the cash tip immediately so she could go to the bank before it closed that day. -1000/10 service: i would never ever come back. I took a chance and tried out the blueberry crab rangoons- very delicious and the flavors worked really well together. The spicy tuna roll was decent, nothing special. I ordered again from this place and they did not disappoint. This time I would give the food 5 stars! I had the chicken typhoon lunch and pad Thai with chicken. The pad Thai is sweet with a nutty flavor, and occasional crunchy texture from the bean sprouts, nuts, and scallions. The chicken typhoon lunch is excellent with an even mix of spicy and sweet. The sauce is a tiny bit thick and really gets absorbed by the chicken and veggies. The veggies are fresh and crunchy and mostly sweet which contribute to balancing out the spicy flavor. This place is super weird. The food was average and ok for the price, not noteworthy. But the main issue is the atmosphere of the place, the wait staff are extremely unwelcoming and made almost leave if I hadn't already paid for the food. No one greets you as you enter and then you are met with the most hostile hostess who seems upset when each person approaches them. There was a quick misunderstanding on takeout versus Dine In due to me mumbling. Then she made it seem like I was asking for too much for a table. when I asked if I could use the bathroom she responded with an annoyed "sure" and an eye roll. The only thing missing was a pair of chopsticks to go with the maki and hand roll. The rolls were assembled well and the hand roll was nicely stuffed with salmon skin.
