    Indo Fried Rice
    Linda T.

Best Indonesian fried rice and pad Thai, best place for to-go to run in and grab your food. They're still as good as prior to the crazy fire they had to deal with. Maybe because I'm not a young college student anymore but still not bad and prices are reasonable enough. Whenever I am close by and just wanted to drive by to grab something on the way home, it's a great option. Quality is still there but don't expect AMAZING. Authentic Thai food wihout being crazy sweet, is still there. Not as much food as it used to but still good enough to keep you full. The restaurant name is so easy to remember, yet it can be confusing when someone ask me which Thai restaurant do I recommend for something quick and affordable and I go, "Thai Place." "But like where," is the typical question I get after.

So delicious! Thrilled that they reopened after the fire. It looks so nice inside and the food was unbelievable. We got the Thai Place Pad Thai which was very flavorful and the pork skewers. Definitely will order again.

Amazing service and authentic and flavorful Thai food! Staff told us they've recently re-opened and I'm so happy to have found this cute hole in the wall. They don't skimp on flavor, portion, or quality!

Found another yummy Thai place ... called "Thai Place". LOL!!! Giggling Rice used to be my go to for Thai takeout. However, their hours and availability on Uber Eats is sometimes challenging. Thai Place is very tasty and has good portion sizes. The only downfall is that it's a little pricier than Giggling Rice. I also prefer the Crispy Chicken Pad Thai ("Pad Thai Gai Grob") at Giggling Rice. On the upside though, their fried appetizers are more crunchy and their food is always delivered super quickly. As long as their quality continues, I'll definitely continue to order from there.

    Chicken Pad Thai Massaman Curry

I ordered from Thai Place through UberEats. I would say the Pad Thai portion was quite large, while the Massaman Curry was a bit small. The Pad Thai was fairly standard, but I think it could have used some more flavor. The Massaman Curry was pretty solid, but I wish they included some avocado and/or sweet potato in there. It came with rice, which at least made it a bit more filling. Overall, solid, but nothing extraordinary.

Thai food, when done right, is so amazing. That said, I think it's really hard to keep things authentic while meeting the various preferences of the local palate that you're serving. I imagine that's likely the conflict that we discovered dining here. We arrived for lunch, and there were only 4 tables in the place. Despite it being peak lunch hour, only one other table was occupied, which could have been a tip off to us ahead of time. The menu was pretty standard, although I was impressed they had multiple options for pad thai which was unusual to me. To start, we ordered the pad woon sen, which is hubby's favorite thai dish, and because there were so many pad thai choices, I opted for that. I asked for a thai iced tea with coconut milk instead of crème, and initially they said they couldn't do it, but then later came back and said yes, and it was good. The entrees were polarized. Hubby's pad woon sen was excellent, with crisp veggies, and well seasoned. I was super jealous because mine was a comparative let down. My pad thai was heavy with sauce and overly sweet to the point of being sickly sweet. I was unable to finish even half of it. The saving grace was dessert. We ordered the coconut sticky rice with mango and it was excellent. The rice was not over cooked, the coconut crème was equal parts sweet and salty, and the mango was ripe and tangy. Service was fast, prices were good, and parking was chaotic on the street. Given the unpredictability of the food, I would not likely return.

Update, I officially love this place. The people Who work here are just so wonderful and deserving good people. Lovely service and flavorful food. Just bursting with flavor. The golden bags are big and filling and the soups are each wonderful all of them!

Gra pow didn't include fried egg like menu said, and what is the brown stuff that was mixed in the food??

Updated takeout review: the food I received tonight is not as good as I remember. Thai Place is not usually my go to for Thai food but my other spot was closed, so I decided to try this place again. I ordered gra pow, and it did not have a fried egg on top like the menu said it would. Also there are weird brown gelatin looking blobs that were mixed in my food (see picture). What the heck is this? It made me lose my appetite and I will not be ordering from here again.

To be honest, I didn't know this place existed because of how tiny it is...and I am in Allston quite often. My friend suggested this place and it wasn't bad. I came here on a weeknight and it was empty inside. The place is more of a take out restaurant since seating is quite small and crowded. The staff is friendly and the food came out at a reasonable time!

Steamed shumai and pad Thai with chicken, tofu, and fried egg
    Meghan B.

I got the steamed shumai and the pad Thai with chicken, tofu, and fried egg. I was pleasantly surprised with portion size of the pad Thai. This one dish could easily feed 3-4 people. I'm not complaining. The pad Thai was nice touch of sweet and savory (more on the sweet side which I like). Flavor is there, I would say the noodle consistency isn't the same throughout. Some were too soft, some were just right. The reason why I gave 4 stars was that the skin of shumai was a little too thick, but still tasted delicious. I will be ordering from here again!

The restaurant was casual, but nice, and had several other tables of diners at that time. The staff was very friendly, as well. The menu had some really interesting dishes that I had not seen elsewhere, but I was lame and ordered my usual - Chicken Pad See Ew. I found the poultry to be very tender, and the included broccoli was fresh and crisp. I should note that the broccoli used was the popular Calabrese kind, while Chinese broccoli cost $1 more. In fact, there were several upcharges scattered around the menu, which was a bit much. Anyway, back to the dish...In addition to the broccoli, carrots were also included, which was not typical for Pad See Ew, but I was fine with it! The sweet soy sauce was a bit thick, like a light gravy, so that was a bit unusual, but the flavor was terrific! I heard reasonably positive things about their Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles as well. Thaitation would be a place I would frequent if I lived in the area.

Noise levels were low for most of the meal, but at one point turned up to blast a rendition of "happy birthday" for another guest - after that, music stayed a bit too loud, which seemed to clash with the otherwise calm ambiance. They didn't ask for our preferred spice levels for the main dishes, and I would've liked everything a little bit spicier. We originally wanted the salmon spring rolls but they were out. We got Tod Mun (fried fish cakes) instead, and they were really tasty. They were smaller but greater in quantity than what I've seen elsewhere, and the sauce was good. I'm not a huge fan of the side salads, though this one surprised me with the spiciness in the dressing. We ordered the mango curry (which comes with chicken, and we added steamed tofu for no charge) and tofu drunken noodles. The noodles were really good, plus looked more appetizing than the similarly-popular pad thai. I was hoping the mango in the curry would be large, beautiful pieces of sweet mango on top, so I was a little disappointed that the small chunks weren't quite as flavorful as I was hoping for. However, I was still quite happy with the dish overall. It also comes with a (pretty small) bowl of rice on the side. The food by itself would be 4 stars for me, except that at the very end of my meal, as I was polishing off the curry, I found a long hair stuck to the bottom of my plate. It didn't match ours, so I know for sure it came from the staff. I know it happens, but the ick factor is hard to get over. Knocked off a star for the unfortunate hair.

We walked into a modest, no frills dining room that feels like a neighborhood staple, with a steady stream of regulars and students who have clearly figured out that this kitchen does something different. The pad see ew is a reliable order and the kitchen handles it well, with the wide rice noodles picking up enough wok char to give the dish the slightly smoky edge that makes or breaks it. The basil fried rice is another strong everyday order, fragrant and well seasoned with a heat level that comes through clearly without overwhelming the rest of the flavors, and the hint of spice carries through each bite in a way that makes it hard to stop eating. Both dishes are the kind of thing you come back for not because they are revelatory but because the execution is consistently solid and the portion sizes are generous enough to make the value feel right. The roti canai is worth ordering as a starter, flaky and well made with a curry dipping sauce that sets a good tone for the meal before the mains arrive. Beyond those three, the larb moo grob is the dish that the restaurant is most known for and the one most worth trying on a first visit, with the crispy pork and the herb forward dressing hitting the kind of authentic Isaan flavor that is nearly impossible to find elsewhere in the city. The Tom Yum and khao man gai are both excellent and worth working into the order if you are eating with a group. Service is straightforward and efficient, with the staff moving quickly to get orders out even when the dining room fills up. The pace is casual and the focus stays on the food rather than the atmosphere, which fits the neighborhood spot energy well. For an authentic taste of northeastern Thai cooking in Allston, Laughing Monk Cafe delivers on the dishes that matter most.

I had never heard of this dish before but it quickly became a favorite in my household and we always order at least one order of it. Basically, it is described as "thin egg noodles with Thai style roast pork, fish balls, chinese broccoli, bean sprouts, and topped with crispy wonton." It is AMAZING. On top of what's listed, it comes with ground pork in the noodles and a sweet and savory sauce that perfectly coats the egg noodles. There are 3 different kinds of fish balls - a shrimp one, a whitefish one, and a fried one, as well as peanuts, deliciously juicy roast pork (char sew), and the crispy wontons add that perfect extra texture and crunch. Man, if I could eat this every week I would. Easily a 5/5 - this is the only place I've seen this dish and it is out of this world. The rest of the menu is also great, but you absolutely have to try the Ba Mee Song Kruang if you come here.
