This review is very belated (~7 months), but in light of the current situation right now, I thought I'd share my thoughts on Thai Spoons since it's a family own, local business of 25 years! Pro tip 1: they are on DoorDash! Pro tip 2: if you need catering services, they prefer to have your order at least 3 weeks in advanced, but I was still changing the menu up until a few days before. They are super accommodating! Pro tip 3: depending how large your party is, there may be a limit to how many chicken skewers you can order. A cute story: the father of the business is retiring, so now his daughter (Katherine) and son joined the family business and plan to help accelerate the restaurant. I had Thai Spoons catered for my company's summer party. Their menu is online, and very easy to read. They have a ton of great options which are all party friendly! While most caterers online just fulfill your order, Katherine (the daughter) took the time to call and communicate with me about the menu for the event. She made great suggestions (which I 100% took), and was even very generous to provide us a discount to keep me within my allotted budget. I told her of our different folks with dietary restrictions, and she was kind enough to make accommodations so that everyone had multiple dishes to try. Pictures speak louder than words on Yelp. We've been visiting this place since 2018. We moved out of town but used to visit this place on every occasion we were around town. Had a pretty bitter experience this time. Our server demo'ed racist behavior. It's pretty evident she doesn't like serving brown skin. I asked if the noodles she served has egg. She responded by saying "it's right there"(telling us to find it ourselves) She has not used 10% of the smiles she used with a white customer at our next table. Pretty embarassing in front of my parents who visited the place on our recommendation. I wanted to do a $0 tip but they forced 18% service charge + 3% credit card fee. 21% for a racist treatment+mediocre food. If you are subject to racism or if you do not support racism, i suggest you to visit elsewhere and do not spoil your weekend like we had. @thai spoons - you lost a loyal customer. read more

I was in the mood for Thai food during a work trip - and so stopped in at Thai Spoons - as it was close to my hotel. I ordered the Tom Yum soup (spicy lemongrass soup), the Som Tum (Papaya salad), and the Drunken Noodles with chicken. I was rather disappointed in both the soup and salad, neither were very good. eggplant delight - very saucy, eggplant like dissolves in your mouth. Medium (spice) felt right. On the salty side. Good with brown rice. I'd recommend it. garlic pepper beef - Medium (spice) tasted mild to me. I used the hot sauce that's on the table. Came here with a family of four on a weekday night! There was no line but still really busy. Food: We got the fried chicken and the eggplant curry and green curry and pad Thai! I definitely think the Star was the small fried chicken nuggets and the eggplant curry since they both had great textures and flavors and weren't overwhelming or salty! We also got the mango sticky rice which was warm and fresh. Service: The best part! This place is family owned and the servers checked in a ton and were super sweet. This place serves up some authentic and potent cuisine. One of the best Thai meals I've had in the bay area. The homemade Chili garlic oil (available at the table) is incredible, great heat and umami flavor to die for. They also sell it at the register. I dumped this on everything I ate here. Spicy Eggplant with Chicken (9/10) - great flavor, good proportions of vegetables (some places throw in way too many bamboo shoots) and lots of gravy for the rice. Panang Nue (8.5/10) - the Kaffir lime really carries this dish. It is NOT too sweet (as many americanized Thai curries are). Pla Pad Ped (9/10) - Whole fried fish in a Thai gravy is always delicious. I highly recommend this dish. The fish has a delicate flavor and is not oily, enhanced by the delicious gravy and perfectly cooked vegetables. You can eat most of the bones and the skin has a fantastic crunch. If you are looking for authentic, strong tasting Thai, this is a great choice (it's worth a visit for the chili garlic alone!) read more

Order the chicken Larb and Penang curry vegetable. Both were excellent dishes and the Thai spicy I requested was spot on. The temperature of both dishes were still very hot by the time I got back tot he hotel. They also included all necessary utensils. read more

Thai Spoons offered an above average Thai restaurant rating for me. I would say my experience was more indicative of a 3.5 star rating, but I'll round up to 4. They have an easy to read menu with all your favorite classic Thai dishes. You have your option of protein (vegetarian options available as well) and your choice of spice level: mild, medium, or spicy. I tried the larb salad with chicken. This was made beautifully and I really had no complaints. The portion size was sizable and there were lots of pieces of ground chicken. It was seasoned well - not too salty, not too much citrus, and it had the beautiful lime-cilantro flavoring going on. This is a refreshing salad to have with your meal as it takes away from some of the heaviness that might be going on in your other dishes. I chose to try the pad thai over the pad kee mao after seeing more favorable reviews for the pad thai. However, I'm not sure if I was raving about the pad thai. I got mine at mild spice (people said medium was too spicy, but mild really doesn't have any kick) and with beef. The portion was decent and they didn't skimp out on the protein. Even though I chose beef, I liked how they added pieces of tofu in the dish as well. It was the sauce and flavoring that threw me off. I thought it was a bit too "ketchup-esque", it was a bit too much. The red curry roasted duck had several things going on in it. The curry itself was creamy with the lusciousness of the coconut milk. I enjoyed the chunks of pineapple and the pieces of veggies. There were several chunks of duck, but it didn't necessarily blow my mind. Overall, the entrees were pretty standard I would say. Service was excellent here. Both servers were very attentive and kind. Water was constantly refilled. The restroom is located outside and around the building. The dishes are slightly on the pricier side, depending on the protein of your choice. On average each dish is roughly $13. The curry doesn't come with rice; a side of rice is $2 (for either brown or white). The total bill for the 3 entrees and 2 sides of rice was about $50.00 without tip. read more

Pretty good Thai fast food and a good value for lunch. I got the three item combo with mixed grain brown rice, Pad Ped Gai, Yellow Curry and Pad Gra Pow. All were tasty but the stand out was the yellow curry for me. My partners favorite was the Pad Ped Gai but it was a little heavy/deep fried for me and I was just wishing the batter was a little lighter. Overall, I'll be back! read more

Tried this place one night for takeout not long before they closed for renovations. Got my two favorite dishes. The chicken pad thai was okay ish - not super flavorful, but a solid portion. The papaya salad was awful. It smelled like it was bad so I didn't feel comfortable eating it. It's one of my all-time favorite dishes, so that was pretty disappointing. We had: - Green curry delight: Curry was rich in flavor and lots of veggies - Pad thai: Noodles were nice, flavor on point - Tom kha: There was a lot of chicken. We picked up some take-out orders here yesterday, which were tasty. Three of us had the Yellow Curry Vegi Thai Pumpkin ($13 each, + $2 for rice each). The curry was good and enjoyed by everyone. I had a bowl of Tom Kha soup with chicken ($12). The soup itself was very flavorful. The chicken in the soup was plentiful, but seemed a little bit tough/chewy. We've been ordering to go a few times from here. Quality is inconsistent. Service is ok. Ambiance is ok, a bit tight and stuffy inside the restaurant. Recently ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and Phad See Ew with shrimp. The shrimps were not fresh at all. yuk! they tasted mushy... :( Very disappointed. And expensive! We are certainly not coming back. I found myself staying right next door to this spot and as soon as I walked by it I found myself with a Thai food craving. I didn't have time to sit down and eat so I just ordered a mango sticky rice and a Thai tea to go. Staff was really friendly and got my order out ahead of the estimated wait time, which you have to appreciate extra when you're on a bit of a time crunch. They also had free stickers at the cash register and self-serve water towards the front. The mango sticky rice portion did not get any bigger since my previous review but I had to appreciate how the mango was perfectly sweet (sometimes the mango is sour or just misses the mark and I'd take a smaller portion over worse mango quality any day). I had a big assignment I needed to complete for a class that night and the Thai tea did its job of keeping me awake and alert perfectly. I had Thai Spoons takeout throughout quarantine quite a few times, and it definitely fills your Thai-food noodle cravings. Generally get chicken pad thai or beef pad see ew - great flavor and decent portions, though never any leftovers for me. A bit on the pricey side at $13+ per entree (or maybe I'm used to $5 pad thai in Irvine...) but still pretty delicious. I picked up some shrimp pad Thai and fried chicken bits for lunch. The a la cart quantities were good and the food itself was great! This is now one of my go-to places for Thai. It is quick and friendly. The food is not cheap, but fairly priced for the quality. Their spice level is not Insane. That is, my 94 YO mom and I could deal with "medium" spice and we are definitely Norte Americanos. Great find! read more

I can't believe it took me so long to find this place. The three of us shared their special brown rice, pad kee mao and spicy eggplant. With banana pudding for dessert. the spice level was just right for the table, allowing people to spice it up more if they wanted. the portions are large and we went home with leftovers. We got DoorDash take out dinner recently (during COVID) and it was great - ordered the food and it was ready just as we arrived back home from our Labor Day weekend road trip. Well, first I want to say this place was nice, but I think the food was a little bland. I know there are different regions, styles of cooking, so maybe this place doesn't season food as much as other Thai places I've been to. I ordered the garlic pineapple fried rice, which I've ordered at another places and I absolutely love. This rice I was served was garlicky, but bland. I added soy sauce, which I never have done to pineapple fried rice before. I ordered the minced chicken, which also was ok but bland, lacking seasoning. Again, it wasn't bad and maybe different style of cooking, maybe even healthier since it wasn't as salty as I usually am used to. The eggplant dish was good and tasted seasoned perfectly. Tom yum soup also was great! Definitely recommend that. Dessert, the sticky rice with mango was delicious. Service was good and they were very attentive. Serving water frequently and updating you with your order. The restaurant is small and intimate. If you go, suggest you go early. Large groups can be accommodated, but may be a bit challenging due to size of place. Price point was also reasonable. We ordered our typical Thai items (all with tofu). - Panang Curry (spicy) - Pad See Ew (spicy) - Eggplant StirFry (spicy) The noodles for the pad see ew were not the wide ones more commonly used and the parang curry was on the thicker side. If you're fine with this you might enjoy the offerings at Thai Spoons. Their special the Eggplant Stirfry was a pretty good large portion and well seasoned. A little confused on how this place has such good ratings because this might be one of the more disappointing takeout orders I've experienced...oof, no hate though. We ordered the Pad See Ew, Garlic Fried Rice, Broccoli Beef Basil Chicken and it came out to be quite pricey, especially for what it was. The portions were really small and the togo containers weren't filled up all the way, which was a disappointment when we opened them. This was such a stark contrast to other Thai places that I have ordered from where they give fairly hefty to-go portions. In terms the of the food...I feel like I'm not a very picky person, but the flavors were also very bland. I feel like Thai food is typically fragrant and flavorful but every single item fell flat. The Broccoli Beef also did not appear like a Broccoli beef, it was just a medley of veggies with some pieces of beef thrown in there. It seemed like they were only doing pick-up orders when I stopped by. The staff are all taking the right precautions, which was nice. But It took quite a bit of time for the food to prepare and I don't think it wasn't worth the wait, unfortunately. read more
