This place isn't what it used to be. They served me jungle curry that was straight garbage. It was a couple of tiny veggies/ chicken in a BLAND SOUP based broth. It was practically boiled water--no flavor. Not too mention it's suppose to be jungle CURRY. Thai CURRY or any curry for that matter is never ever soup based! Doesn't surprise me that the food is so terrible now...they're in the market for a line cook. Hopefully they hire someone who knows what flavor/curry actually are. read more

What a disappointment! We typically order Thai from Mama Ning's, but we had a hankering on a Monday when they are closed. We decided to try Thai Spoon. I attempted to order online at 8:15 pm but after repeated attempts, it would not go through. I tried different credit cards but no success. We called and after about 10 rings they answered. The woman just said to try again online. We placed our order over the phone and asked if we could get the free spring rolls that the online order mentioned. The woman on the phone acted like that was the most outlandish question and said there was no way she could give us anything for free. We tried to continue on without them but she just kept telling us to order online again. I tried one more time, and it worked. I recognize that it isn't her fault, but the lack of customer service should've been our first clue. The online order told us 20 - 30 minutes. My husband arrived at the restaurant 25 minutes later. He had to wait an additional 30 minutes at the restaurant, and no employees seemed concerned. This is later on a Monday night, and the restaurant was not busy. Went for their lunch. I ended up getting a spicy Thai noodles. It was very good. However the soup appetizer that came before was questionable. It seemed like it was supposed to be a coconut chicken soup, but the taste was very odd. It was sweet and sour at the same time; not in a good way. It was way too sour for the amount of sweetness. It seemed like they poured a whole lot of lime juice into it. If you can, try to ask for a substitute for the soup. read more

The food was amazing. My family went there on a Saturday night, not crowded at all that day. We ordered masamun curry, yellow curry, pad see ew, and fried rice with seafood. All was delicious. Middle of the road Thai spot in downtown Athens. I've eaten here about 6 times over the last 5 years of being in town for business. The massaman curry is pretty good, as are the spring rolls. The drunken noodles are also worth trying. The service is generally prompt and friendly. I wouldn't necessarily call this a destination spot for fine dining, but for a decent Thai meal in a quiet setting, this place will do. read more

Nicely remodeled and complete new facelift to an old favorite..Thiai Spoon beats Siri Thai, hands down on the assortment and flavor. Siri Thai's food is good but a bit too salty for my liking.Thai Spoon has added a killer sushi bar and chef, it remains one of my go-to spots in town, just now it's even better. The food is extremely well prepared. The sushi is some of the best in town, if not the best. Very reasonably priced and always a joy to hit this spot get my Asian food fix. Excellent food. Service could be a little better but it seems like a staffing issue that is overcome by the excellent chef in the kitchen. Literally anything and everything is great here. I have had the crispy catfish basil, green catfish curry. Hot garlic shrimp and scallops, pad Thai, crispy duck, basil fried rice, the chicken satay, spring rolls, and more. I came here with my girlfriend one night, and we both ordered 2 different type of catfish dish. The seafood pricing is a bit on the heavy side, around 14.95 for the catfish, but I was still craving some catfish that night so we got it anyways. The dish itself was pretty mediocre compared to the other catfish dishes I've had, but what really bothered me was the fact that they gave me rice in a tea cup. I basically finished the rice in 2 scoops of my spoon, and when I asked for more rice; the waiter notified me that it would cost 2 dollars/rice refill, which is absolutely ridiculous for a $15 entree. So I just requested the to go box and the check, and went home and just made my own rice. 10/10 will never come back here again. read more

My favorite Thai place in Athens. I've eaten here probably 30+ times over the past four years. I have studied abroad in Thailand in the past, and I know it's difficult for restaurants stateside to hit the flavors just right. I get their Panang curry every time and am always pleased with the result--just the right amount of heat but not too sweet like a true panang recipe. I'm giving four stars because eating here for dinner is not the same as for lunch. First, it's pricier at dinner, but the portions are not much larger. I have always been a fan of this restaurant..... the ambiance is great, the servers are helpful, food is served in a timely manner, the prices are great ($12 for the dinner special), and the food is excellent. On my most recent outing to Thai Spoon, I went with four other friends. I ordered the dinner special of Fresh Ginger with chicken. The dinner special entailed of a spring roll, soup, a soft drink or tea, and white jasmine rice to go along with your entree. To start off I ordered the Thai tea, which is one of my favorite things to order when in a Thai restaurant, and this drink was extremely tasty. My soup was composed of a broth with sliced mushrooms and chopped scallions, which was spiced up with some rooster sauce. I am usually not a fan of spiciness, but the rooster sauce worked wonderfully. The spring rolls came in next, and were brought in with some yummy duck sauce, which worked beautifully with this appetizer. Once the entrees arrived we were given this huge decorative bowl of jasmine rice to share, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable since it was like dining family style. My fresh ginger with chicken entree was composed of various vegetables with a ginger sauce along with chicken, which was delicious. I would have normally ordered the pad Thai, but I was feeling like ordering something healthy which worked out great because that dish was exactly what I needed. The servings were quite generous and ate my fill of delicious Thai goodness. In conclusion, I would say that if you visit or live in Athens this place is a must go if you want a bang for your buck and a happy tummy!!! read more

Thai spicy noodles? More like Thai sweet noodles. We were in a rush to find a restaurant downtown, and decided to just eat here. The place was pretty packed, but we found a table fairly quickly. The interior was decorated like most Asian restaurants: dimly lit, Asian ornaments scattered around like Buddha statues and what not. Nothing out of the ordinary. We got the menus pretty quickly, and like most Thai places too, it was a tinsy bit pricey for the actual food you were getting. I ended up getting the Thai spicy noodles with chicken, needed something to heat me on that cold, wet night. The wait for the food was okay, and they gave us these rice puff crackers which were a nice treat. Food came out warm; presentation was pretty drab (but I don't how else you'd present a Thai noodle dish better). Ugh but my biggest gripe: THE NOODLES WEREN'T SPICY. Hardly even remotely spicy, it tasted like I was eating some teriyaki noodles or something. If you're not a hothead you can skip this part, but I hate it when Thai places can't get spicy food right, I mean their culture is known for that kind of food. Like I said earlier, the dish was a little too sweet for my liking, and could use a little more heat. The chicken was also on the dry side, but not that much of a big deal. Onto the good stuff: noodles had a nice firmness and vegetables were cooked well, crunchy and balancing well with the noodles. The service was really good, our waitress regularly checked on our table and refilled our water. I don't know why the servers were scantily dressed, maybe it was just that specific day--I'm probably getting a little picky here, but it made the restaurant feel a lot cheaper in value. read more

Our family wanted to eat noodles and were very hungry. We ordered Pad-Siew, Spicy noodles with beef, fried rice, and egg noodles with pork. Having lived in Thailand, we knew that these dishes should have had more taste and definitely more spice, especially when it says spicy. The cabbage in our meal was not cooked. This did not hit our Thai belly spot. Even our young daughter said, "these noodles have no flavor", and pad-siew is her favorite Thai meal. Sorry, won't be back. The only reason why we didn't give this a "terrible" review was because none of us got food poisoning, so at least they used decent ingredients. Two bad experiences back-to-back. I ordered to go both times, so you may want to take that into consideration. First experience: Called in my order. I was told my order would be ready in 15 minutes. I didn't get there until about thirty minutes later. When i arrived, the hostess had forgotten to put my order in so I got to wait an additional 30 minutes. So one hour total for an order that was supposed to take 15 minutes. When I got the food, it wasn't impressed. Second experience: I wanted to give them a second chance, so I called an order in again. When I arrived, I realized I hadn't been asked what level of spice I'd like, so I asked if it was too late. The hostess seemed like she didn't want to ask the kitchen, but after giving me a long blank stare she said she could see what she could do and proceeded back to the kitchen. On a positive note, this time the order only took 15 minutes to be prepared. However when I got back to my office, the soup container had not been closed all the way so most of its contents were in the bottom of the bag. The spice I had asked about, instead of being mixed in was just plopped on top. Oh and there was some lovely 2in long, I'm going to assume, hairs from someone's beard. I will not be returning. This place has such a lovely atmosphere. The decor was pleasing to the eye. The waitstaff were courteous, apologetic when it got busy and we had to wait on our check, and knowledgable. I have had both good and bad experiences at Thai Spoon but the night my friend and I saw a rat climbing up the pipe inside the restaurant was the last night we as there. That particular night the service was subpar as well. Our waiter was unattentive and never refilled our drinks. I didnt leave. Which is very unlike me. Its a shame too because the food is generally good. Also I think their menu is too large. They need to narrow down was they offer. When a menu is too large I think it makes it difficult for the customer to decide what to order. They do have a smaller "specials" menu thats easy pick from. read more

My first night in Athens my roommate and I wanted something with an Asian flair. I used my Yelp app and found Thai Spoon. I had the spicy Jungle Curry, she warned me it would be too spicy but it could have been a bit spicier-but thats just me. It had bamboo shoots, green beans,baby corn, mushrooms, fresh basil in a red curry paste. The ingredients were fresh, well cooked and great. The place was intimate and service good. Athens shines in its Thai food, and Thai Spoon is no exception. Consistently delicious for a good price - I last came in 2009 and it still tastes just as good! Came for lunch and ordered a lunch special curry. For $8.95 you really can't beat it. You get soup (mushroom, which is much better than other Thai lunch soups), a spring roll, a drink, and an entree with chicken, tofu, or veggies. I chose the masaman with chicken, because I love the cashews and avocados. It's really mild, so I asked for medium spice and it was delightful. I'm obsessed with the masaman sauce. I also tried the corn cakes, which were good though they didn't match the Thai restaurant back home. But that's okay - think a bigger corn nugget. Other good choices are their panang curry or pad Thai, but really you can't go wrong. One of my friends loves the tofu, so give it a try if that's your thing. The soup coconut flavor was good but had no heat or meat to itthe feature add meat to everything is annoying. The prices are extremely off putting in the first place. My husband ordered pad Thai and requested extra peanuts and none were given. I ordered a red curry dish and the sauce was ok but rather sweet. It needed heat also. We switched meals but some my husband was annoyed. So we discontinued eating and leftwe paid so much money and we're still hungry. Never again will be back . read more

I thought this was place was 'just ok' until I ordered the duck salad. It turned out to be the most flavorful delicious item on the menu, who knew? I have to give credit to my roommate who picked it out.. I tend to stay with the safe options, like penang curry, etc. The lunch deal is good here but nothing all that great. I like the soup that they bring but that's about all that stands out in terms of Thai food. The duck salad doesn't qualify for the lunch special but I'd get it anyway. It's pieces of duck on a salad with a ton of spices and flavors. I have no idea what the flavors are but they explode in your mouth and are tangy and sweet/sour, with a hint of garlic. They also have a yummy Thai iced tea.. Only thing to note is that the last time I went most of the pieces of duck on my plate were rather chewy and hard to swallow, which was surprising. The first time out of maybe 4 times I've ordered it... hm. I've brought people who have come to visit me in Athens here and they've always enjoyed it; it's just simple, typical Thai food; you get what you asked for. Food is mediocre and usually comes out wrong if you decide to change something. The service is a little iffy when you done in, however, and the portions are significantly smaller when you order takeout. In terms of Thai food in Athens, it tends to be the best option.
