Honestly, I would say it's overrated. But It's a very popular place, and it can be hard to get a table at times. It's an upscale place to be sure, but it's not fussy. Just don't show up looking like a slob. I would say, just dress up casual just a little, and you will probably be fine. I ordered the duck special. I love duck, and I order it whenever it is available anywhere I happen to be, but my plate was underwhelming. What saves this review and bumps it up from three stars to four is the ambience and the service. It has a nice ambience, and the service was impeccable. I don't hold a grudge if a place is promising. I was visiting Athens and was given Last Resort as a restaurant recommendation. There's street metered parking. I was able to be seated right away for inside dining. There was a little wait for outside. My server was great! He was very attentive and explained all of the daily specials; as well as answered any questions I had. We started with the bacon wrapped quail, we didn't see any pomegrante seeds but it was well worth it without them! My husband got the duck special, he enjoyed it. I got the trout and paid an upcharge for the Caesar instead of a house salad (mixed baby greens with shredded carrot with your choice of dressing) and if you do ANYTHING, pay the upcharge for the Caesar because it's the best Caesar literally ever. The trout was delicious and had the grits of been not congealed they would have been yummy too. Also perfectly cooked okra on the plate. I'd order it again and again. My husband got the house salad with the Vidalia dressing and it was also yummy but not as fantastic the Caesar. I'm at a solid 4/5 on this one. Often hard crowded so get there early or call ahead to check. This place is popular for a reason. Good service by a team that stays on top of every table. Quick delivery of drinks and food, although it was weird not all the salads came out together. Kind of on the fence with the water service being "do it yourself" and the bill suggesting a 20% tip PLUS a 3.5% extra "house service charge" as shown in the pic of our bill. This was a complete surprise to all of us. Food is excellent with the exception of the miss on the cake slices that I'll cover last. Tried the horshradish crusted salmon over kale (which tasted like pan seared spinach) and mashed sweet potatoes. This was pretty good, although you can't really taste the horshradish at all and the veggies were a bit too mushy for my liking. Others at the table tried the cornbread crusted trout with okra and grits. This one got a thumbs up. And roast pork tenderloin with green beans that was also liked but not enough to finish the entire plate. This restaurant is well known for their cake slices but as a first time visitor I was disappointed. I thought the $10.30 per slice with service charge was high, especially when my espresso martini piece was missing a large chunk and not very wide (see picture). Also tried the tres leches cake slice, which was a bit better and at least the full size. I wouldn't get either again at this price point, especially with the 3.5% service charge. Tried it and learned. The ambiance is good, although the layout of the restaurant is weird. It can get loud but we were able to talk without yelling. Parking is mainly street meter. Someone told us it was free on Sunday although I'm not sure the meter says this. It can be challenging to find a spot so leave some time to drive around and possibly walk from afar. read more

Sirloin was good but my potatoes were cold. The waitress mixed up my salad with my peer's, so I accidentally ate a jalapeño Dijon dressing instead of my desired Gorgonzola dressing. Discovered it way too late, but really wish the waitress would've said something instead of just throwing the salads in our places with no regard to who's was who's. Inside the restaurant was good. Came here during the 4th quarter of a home football game and had only a 15 min wait for four. We sat at the table in front of the kitchen, was pretty cool. Well worth a visit for the food. We tried the casual Friday lunch. Food: The lunch menu has several standard southern dishes like shrimp and grits, burgers, salads as well as a few new combinations. Their desserts are always a favorite, with large servings and multiple choices of cakes and cheesecakes, locally sourced from well known Athens' family businesses. There is an extensive beverage list. Service: 5 Star service The servers know the menu well and are very pleasant and attentive. Your tea, coffee, and water are frequently refilled. Orders are done correctly. Facility:Well kept older building but tables are somewhat crowded and the noise level inside during main mealtimes makes conversation impossible without shouting-which contributes to the noise. There is a very nice area at the front of the dining room that has been opened to the outside sidewalk and street to allow diners to enjoy breezes during nice weather. This a little quieter but has intermittent traffic noises. The metal outside tables and chairs are in a pleasant picnic-like area. I knew it was a risk to order Mahi Mahi this far away from the south Pacific, but it was on the special board and sounded good over Charleston Grits. The portion was too small for the price and undercooked. The grits devolved into a mash of fish skin and oil. The yellow squash was overcooked and soggy. The restaurant lacked a vibe.. seemed like some people were way overdressed and the place was trying to be an upper class spot with a basic meal at an upper class price. I had the white chocolate cheesecake which had a gooey chocolate sauce on top that was like a sugar punch in the face. Sounded like it was a famous dessert for them, and it wasn't anything to speak of. Another odd thing, I was there with my dad, we sat across from each other at a 4 person table. The food runner placed my dish in front of me, he placed my dad's dish on the setting right next to my dad where no one was sitting? Not sure what's going on there, but it's odd. My family and I went to breakfast at this establishment. Our children had Chick-fil-A nuggets with them due to being very picky eaters. My husband and I ordered full meals along with cocktails. We were informed by the manager that outside food was not permitted. We complied by putting the bags away and allowed our children to finish eating discreetly, without disturbing other guests. There was no disruption, and we had ordered a substantial amount of food and beverages from the restaurant. Despite this, the manager returned and addressed us in an extremely rude and condescending manner, stating, "I don't know what you don't understand about no outside food allowed." We politely asked if an exception could be made, and his response was again dismissive and unprofessional. Isaac's attitude was unnecessarily hostile and lacked basic hospitality. Based on this interaction, we will not be returning and do not recommend this establishment. His demeanor was not welcoming, and customer service was severely lacking. read more

We pulled up and I was surprised that there was an open air space in the front of the restaurant. Outside was full so she walked us in past the bar and amazing dessert display case into another crowded room where we had a cute corner table where we could see the food coming out from the chef and being garnished right in front of us! When I ordered just the soup, the waiter made an unnecessary comment about "understanding I had a budget," which felt unprofessional and missed the real reason: the menu just did not appeal to me. One person in our group struggled to have her food allergies accommodated, and I noticed several plates around our large party went unfinished. The crab cakes were average they had a nice crust to them but just not enough character on the inside, Caesar salad was good and prepared properly also had anchovies which added some extra flavor, the cornbread salmon was good but the fish itself just didn't have much flavor, and finally the stuffed pork tenderloin was tough and bland in my opinion. Now I did finish the night off with a slice of the amaretto cheesecake and that was very good. Cut thin, fried to perfection without being too oily, and served with a yummy vadalia bacon dressing - I highly recommend! Every entree plate was licked clean. From the hanger steak, to the new struggleville pasta, caramelized sea scallops, and even the fish special, everyone devoured their meals. It's clear the food is fresh, well put together, and worth every penny. We finished the night with red velvet layer cake and white chocolate cheesecake. The cheesecake was so good we had to order another. The red velvet layer cake was moist and fresh! Overall, I would definitely recommend bringing your parents here if they're visiting UGA. My friend and I decided to go here for brunch on a Saturday morning. I'm glad we arrived early because a line had already formed outside! I wasn't really surprised because a lot of people talk about Last Resort in Athens, and it was graduation weekend. We ordered the Carolina Crab Cakes as an appetizer and both got the Rockville Pasta as our entree. I want to say that we both ordered the Georgia Beach cocktail too. Everything had a great taste! The only reason I am not giving this restaurant a 'great' review is because it is slightly overrated in my opinion. Came here this week and got seated right away because it was UGA's spring break and we opted for greenhouse seating outside. For appetizers we had crab cakes and it's the best crab cakes I've ever had. Not much bread filling probably all crab meat! For my entree, I had the trout and corn grits. It's the best grits I've ever had and I normally do not like grits!! It also came with okra. Everything was cooked to perfection. For dessert I had the peach cake. I had a bite and took the rest home. I finally got around to finishing it two days later (stored in the fridge of course) and it was even more delicious!! I want to come back here! It was recommended by my co worker and I will now recommend it to anyone going to Athens!! *chefs kiss* Also The greenhouse was comfortable to sit in this was about 7pm at night, second week of March and weather was 60s. A small heater was provided but not needed. There is a similar concept in downtown Atlanta but instead of a greenhouse it's an igloo and honestly this greenhouse was wayyyy better. Last Resort Grill in downtown Athens is my favorite restaurant in Athens. I have visited several times and always had a delicious and positive experience. I love their art decor and ambiance. This time I was happy to see they have expanded their restaurant with a modern and pleasant garden sitting area. The Last Resort menu always gives a hint of gourmet Mexican food fusion; I highly enjoy the attention to detail they put in all their dishes. It is the little details that count. Additionally, their servers are always courteous. The main entree does seem to take some time to come out, but I have always gotten an appetizer and drinks ahead of time and had a lovely time. Every time I have been here, it was off school time, so I have not experienced the high tempo and long wait time others complained about. There is garage parking nearby and street parking immediately outside the restaurant. Bring quarters for the parking meter. read more

I scraped my bowl clean! For dessert I had the Spanish lemon cake and it was the perfect way to end. Things to know: 1) We went at 6:30 on a Monday and waited 45 minutes, so plan ahead. We love to get the soup of the day each time--today salmon bisque. It was very flavorful and something a little different compared to a lot of their other soups. We've ordered chicken praline as our entree for the past year and there's a reason for that. It's so good that the servers have made jokes about us licking our plates before... It's a similar story with desert. You cannot come to last resort without trying a cake!! After trying every cheesecake and layered cake they have, we've settled on a few favorites.
