The food was 4/5 but the waitress was 100/5. I wish I could remember her name. She was incredibly knowledgeable and had a artistic flair in discussing the various specials and desserts. I ordered the last resort's praline and I felt the portion size was rather small. However, it was a very savory comfort dish perfect on that rainy day. My advisor ordered a salad with salmon, which would have been pretty hard to get wrong, so she enjoyed that. read more

I was visiting Athens and was given Last Resort as a restaurant recommendation. There's street metered parking. I was able to be seated right away for inside dining. There was a little wait for outside. My server was great! He was very attentive and explained all of the daily specials; as well as answered any questions I had. I started with the pineapple jalapeño margarita. For food I ordered the bacon wrapped quail, which was pretty good, and the cornbread crusted trout. The food was ok, nothing to brag about. read more

Aaron was our waiter and did a great job. We were visitors from out of town and everyone made us feel welcome. I got the crusted trout with the kale salad and it was delicious. I also got a seasonal cocktail that was a twist of a paper plane. We brought some white chocolate cheesecake home and loved it. Last Resort lived up to the hype for me. read more

They don't take reservations or call aheads but it's fine because the food is worth the wait. We started with the bacon wrapped quail, we didn't see any pomegrante seeds but it was well worth it without them! My husband got the duck special, he enjoyed it. I got the trout and paid an upcharge for the Caesar instead of a house salad (mixed baby greens with shredded carrot with your choice of dressing) and if you do ANYTHING, pay the upcharge for the Caesar because it's the best Caesar literally ever. The trout was delicious and had the grits of been not congealed they would have been yummy too. Also perfectly cooked okra on the plate. I'd order it again and again. My husband got the house salad with the Vidalia dressing and it was also yummy but not as fantastic the Caesar. We skipped dessert bc we were so full but they looked wonderful in the dessert case. 10/10 reccomend. Wait the hour for the table and people watch outside. read more

The wait time for food after ordering was 45 minutes with very few people in restaurant at around 2 pm. Drinks, silverware were picked up by diner. I have eaten here for the last 10 years with good experience. Now quantity, and quality were a 2 of 5. Worst shrimp and grits I ever had. The menu had been cut at least in half from last year. read more

Honestly, I would say it's overrated. But It's a very popular place, and it can be hard to get a table at times. It's an upscale place to be sure, but it's not fussy. Just don't show up looking like a slob. I would say, just dress up casual just a little, and you will probably be fine. I ordered the duck special. I love duck, and I order it whenever it is available anywhere I happen to be, but my plate was underwhelming. What saves this review and bumps it up from three stars to four is the ambience and the service. It has a nice ambience, and the service was impeccable. I don't hold a grudge if a place is promising. I'll try it again the next time I'm in town. Cheers! read more

I'm at a solid 4/5 on this one. Often hard crowded so get there early or call ahead to check. This place is popular for a reason. Good service by a team that stays on top of every table. Quick delivery of drinks and food, although it was weird not all the salads came out together. Kind of on the fence with the water service being "do it yourself" and the bill suggesting a 20% tip PLUS a 3.5% extra "house service charge" as shown in the pic of our bill. This was a complete surprise to all of us. Food is excellent with the exception of the miss on the cake slices that I'll cover last. Tried the horshradish crusted salmon over kale (which tasted like pan seared spinach) and mashed sweet potatoes. This was pretty good, although you can't really taste the horshradish at all and the veggies were a bit too mushy for my liking. Others at the table tried the cornbread crusted trout with okra and grits. This one got a thumbs up. And roast pork tenderloin with green beans that was also liked but not enough to finish the entire plate. This restaurant is well known for their cake slices but as a first time visitor I was disappointed. I thought the $10.30 per slice with service charge was high, especially when my espresso martini piece was missing a large chunk and not very wide (see picture). Also tried the tres leches cake slice, which was a bit better and at least the full size. I wouldn't get either again at this price point, especially with the 3.5% service charge. Tried it and learned. The ambiance is good, although the layout of the restaurant is weird. It can get loud but we were able to talk without yelling. Parking is mainly street meter. Someone told us it was free on Sunday although I'm not sure the meter says this. It can be challenging to find a spot so leave some time to drive around and possibly walk from afar. read more

Sirloin was good but my potatoes were cold. The waitress mixed up my salad with my peer's, so I accidentally ate a jalapeño Dijon dressing instead of my desired Gorgonzola dressing. Discovered it way too late, but really wish the waitress would've said something instead of just throwing the salads in our places with no regard to who's was who's. Inside the restaurant was good. Our waiter had a runny nose and kept sniffing right over my food/drink. Could've done without that. read more

Came back after 6 years and it was still delicious. Got to enjoy dinner in one of outdoor greenhouses. It was warm in there, but the sun went down pretty quick so it was fine. Again, enjoyed some cocktails, friend green tomatoes. My salmon and grits were so yummy. Short rib was also delicious. Had some red and black cake to go and it was wonderful. read more

Because of its great fame and being deeply loved by local college students, tourists and political and business celebrities (and usually not accepting regular large-scale reservations), there is almost always a queue at the door, whether during lunch or dinner rush hours. Diners generally suggest: either queue up in advance to wait for the opening or be mentally prepared. read more

Came here during the 4th quarter of a home football game and had only a 15 min wait for four. We sat at the table in front of the kitchen, was pretty cool. Our server was very personable and enhanced our dining experience. Was surprised they also have a kids menu, which was a bonus for us (2 kids). I got the pork chop and it was awesome! The side salad with the jalapeno honey mustard dressing was also notable. Would definitely come back! read more

Traditional city restaurant with good food if you can stand the loud noise inside. Fortunately it offers metal picnic tables under umbrellas outside, where you can dine in good weather. Well worth a visit for the food. We tried the casual Friday lunch. Food: The lunch menu has several standard southern dishes like shrimp and grits, burgers, salads as well as a few new combinations. Their desserts are always a favorite, with large servings and multiple choices of cakes and cheesecakes, locally sourced from well known Athens' family businesses. There is an extensive beverage list. Service: 5 Star service The servers know the menu well and are very pleasant and attentive. Your tea, coffee, and water are frequently refilled. Orders are done correctly. Facility:Well kept older building but tables are somewhat crowded and the noise level inside during main mealtimes makes conversation impossible without shouting-which contributes to the noise. There is a very nice area at the front of the dining room that has been opened to the outside sidewalk and street to allow diners to enjoy breezes during nice weather. This a little quieter but has intermittent traffic noises. The metal outside tables and chairs are in a pleasant picnic-like area. They are covered by cheerful red umbrellas and avoid the inside noise. Location: Very conveniently located on one of the main streets downtown, with metered street parking. read more

I wanted to give this place a better review, I visit about once a year when I'm in from the West Coast. This is the second year in a row I've been and tonight's experience as well as last year left me wanting more. The bread was somewhat dry, not much more than a grocery store Italian bread. Butter was cold and solid, room temp is easier to spread. I knew it was a risk to order Mahi Mahi this far away from the south Pacific, but it was on the special board and sounded good over Charleston Grits. The portion was too small for the price and undercooked. The grits devolved into a mash of fish skin and oil. The yellow squash was overcooked and soggy. The restaurant lacked a vibe.. seemed like some people were way overdressed and the place was trying to be an upper class spot with a basic meal at an upper class price. I had the white chocolate cheesecake which had a gooey chocolate sauce on top that was like a sugar punch in the face. Sounded like it was a famous dessert for them, and it wasn't anything to speak of. Another odd thing, I was there with my dad, we sat across from each other at a 4 person table. The food runner placed my dish in front of me, he placed my dad's dish on the setting right next to my dad where no one was sitting? Not sure what's going on there, but it's odd. I don't think I'll go back. read more

The Last Resort Grill is a pleasant sit down dining experience with an upscale southern menu. Always a favorite spot of mine, and my family, when visiting Athens, GA & the University. Many wonderful dining memories made here through the years. Know they don't take reservation, and the wait can get quite long! I'd recommend eating early and get here before they open to start the line. We started our meal with their tasty, lightly battered fried green tomatoes served with a yummy, creamy condiment sauce. Our salad came next, and while I really enjoyed my pretty garden salad - topped with fresh veggies and made in house Gorgonzola dressing, my husband didn't like his Caesar salad at all. Their twist on the original Caesar was a fail and disappointment in his opinion. Our shared short rib (thank you for allowing) was comfort food at its best! The creamy mashed potatoes and crisp tender green beans were delicious sides!! Last, we shared a piece of their Key Lime Cheesecake. Heads up, they are known for their wonderful cakes and cheesecakes! This Key Lime cheesecake tonight didn't have enough tartness for hubs, but I thought it was creamy deliciousness! Our classic cocktails hit the spot, they've added an outdoor dining patio and bar, and their interior decor is eclectic and unique. Can't wait to return! read more

A perfect spot for a classic weekend brunch with a slightly elevated, yet down to earth, vibe. We stopped in with a large group and settled in on their huge outdoor patio. While their indoor dining room appeared a bit more dressed up for a weekend jazz brunch, their patio was just relaxed enough to make for a fun and relaxed morning. The menu was huge and most things sounded great, but I settled on the southwestern salad with salmon, paired with a few perfect margaritas, making for a delicious, light, and fresh meal. Additionally, service was friendly and low-key, and we felt right at home. A perfect option for brunch with friends, and definitely deserving of a return visit. read more

Last Resort was recommended by a friend that lives here locally and was an awesome recommendation. We're in town for the night for a campus tour and the food didn't disappoint. Full plates are served with salad and bread and the waiter recommended the bacon vidalia dressing and I bought a bottle to go. I had the Hangar steak and it was cooked perfectly. My daughter had the New Struggleville pasta which was fantastic! We were told to get the white chocolate cheesecake for dessert and it didn't disappoint. read more

The food was good just the service was a little bit slow. I got the parchment chicken it tasted home made would have it again. also got the crab cakes they were a little bit fishy wouldn't really recommend unless you got lemon and my parents got the short rib food came cold it was okay. What is there not to love about this place! In town visiting U of Georgia with our daughter we wanted to try something local and the reviews looked pretty good! We pulled up and I was surprised that there was an open air space in the front of the restaurant. Outside was full so she walked us in past the bar and amazing dessert display case into another crowded room where we had a cute corner table where we could see the food coming out from the chef and being garnished right in front of us! Our waiter was awesome, offering my daughter a small plate of grits, something new for her. All our food was creatively presented, full of many flavors all blended together to make an exquisite dish. We tried the shrimp quesadilla appetizer and the potato pancake appetizer. I could have eaten both as a main meal! Then came our salads. We had the Gorgonzola dressing and this amazing jalapeño type dressing. Both were spot on in their flavors. I ordered the horseradish crusted salmon, my daughter the salmon and grits and my husband had the Trout. We were so full but could not pass up the desserts. Dulce de Leche cake and NY cheesecake topped off a perfect evening! Great atmosphere, great staff, impeccably food! I will highly recommend!!! read more

My family and I went to breakfast at this establishment. Our children had Chick-fil-A nuggets with them due to being very picky eaters. My husband and I ordered full meals along with cocktails. We were informed by the manager that outside food was not permitted. We complied by putting the bags away and allowed our children to finish eating discreetly, without disturbing other guests. There was no disruption, and we had ordered a substantial amount of food and beverages from the restaurant. Despite this, the manager returned and addressed us in an extremely rude and condescending manner, stating, "I don't know what you don't understand about no outside food allowed." We politely asked if an exception could be made, and his response was again dismissive and unprofessional. Isaac's attitude was unnecessarily hostile and lacked basic hospitality. Based on this interaction, we will not be returning and do not recommend this establishment. His demeanor was not welcoming, and customer service was severely lacking. read more

The BEST meal in Athens! We lucked out and got a table outside on a beautiful evening, and had a delicious meal at Last Resort. The outdoor patio area had several picnic-style tables, a big bar, and a cozy/casual vibe. Our waitress, Kirsten, was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. She knew the menu and specials like the back of her hand, offered perfect suggestions, and accommodated changes and questions expertly. We started with the. Fried green tomatoes. Cut thin, fried to perfection without being too oily, and served with a yummy vadalia bacon dressing - I highly recommend! Every entree plate was licked clean. From the hanger steak, to the new struggleville pasta, caramelized sea scallops, and even the fish special, everyone devoured their meals. It's clear the food is fresh, well put together, and worth every penny. We finished the night with red velvet layer cake and white chocolate cheesecake. The cheesecake was so good we had to order another. The red velvet layer cake was moist and fresh! Overall, I would definitely recommend bringing your parents here if they're visiting UGA. The food was amazing and the ambiance is relaxed enough to suit any crowd. read more

I really wanted to like Last Resort Grill, but unfortunately, it missed the mark for me. I found it hard to choose something from the menu -- there was just too much happening with many of the dishes. I ended up ordering the Black Bean Soup, which was actually very tasty, as was the fresh bread. However, the overall experience was disappointing. When I ordered just the soup, the waiter made an unnecessary comment about "understanding I had a budget," which felt unprofessional and missed the real reason: the menu just did not appeal to me. One person in our group struggled to have her food allergies accommodated, and I noticed several plates around our large party went unfinished. It simply was not the dining experience I was hoping for. read more

Last resort is a great, reasonably priced place for a business casual type outing. You can wear nicer clothes or a t shirt and both fit just fine in their nice atmosphere. The service was quite quick with it being as fast or slow paced of a meal as you'd like. The food wasn't as amazing as I'd hoped with the pasta being more Al dente than expected and slightly cold however it very well could've been a one time thing as my girlfriend enjoyed her salad. read more

I tried the crab cakes, Caesar salad, corn bread crusted salmon, and the stuffed pork tenderloin. Honestly I was very disappointed being that this place gets a lot of hype. The crab cakes were average they had a nice crust to them but just not enough character on the inside, Caesar salad was good and prepared properly also had anchovies which added some extra flavor, the cornbread salmon was good but the fish itself just didn't have much flavor, and finally the stuffed pork tenderloin was tough and bland in my opinion. Now I did finish the night off with a slice of the amaretto cheesecake and that was very good. The environment is nice and the prices aren't bad for a nice restaurant but the flavor just wasn't there for me. read more

My friend and I decided to go here for brunch on a Saturday morning. I'm glad we arrived early because a line had already formed outside! I wasn't really surprised because a lot of people talk about Last Resort in Athens, and it was graduation weekend. We ordered the Carolina Crab Cakes as an appetizer and both got the Rockville Pasta as our entree. I want to say that we both ordered the Georgia Beach cocktail too. Everything had a great taste! The only reason I am not giving this restaurant a 'great' review is because it is slightly overrated in my opinion. Delicious Saturday brunch today. I had the Lumberjack burrito and my wife had the pulled pork burrito (? not the right name, but you'll find it). Both excellent flavors and presentation. Only thing that could have been better was that it wasn't "hot". Just luke warm and we were part of the first wave ar brunch, so it's not like it sat in the kitchen a long time. It came out fast. Came here this week and got seated right away because it was UGA's spring break and we opted for greenhouse seating outside. For appetizers we had crab cakes and it's the best crab cakes I've ever had. Not much bread filling probably all crab meat! For my entree, I had the trout and corn grits. It's the best grits I've ever had and I normally do not like grits!! It also came with okra. Everything was cooked to perfection. For dessert I had the peach cake. I had a bite and took the rest home. I finally got around to finishing it two days later (stored in the fridge of course) and it was even more delicious!! I want to come back here! It was recommended by my co worker and I will now recommend it to anyone going to Athens!! *chefs kiss* Also The greenhouse was comfortable to sit in this was about 7pm at night, second week of March and weather was 60s. A small heater was provided but not needed. There is a similar concept in downtown Atlanta but instead of a greenhouse it's an igloo and honestly this greenhouse was wayyyy better. I was more comfortable because there was better airflow and sound acoustics was not annoying. read more
