This place is adorable. High ceilings and beautiful chandelier made for a great site. The service was great. The college kids were very kind and personable. As far as the food goes the recipe for the shrimp and grits definitely could use a little tweakIng however the waffle was amazing with the home made maple syrup. We only had one mimosa, but that was enough to have me stumbling all the way to the car lol. The tab was a little bit more than expected with added service fees. The menu is very limited so you may want to check it out before going. Max took amazing care of us and made sure he went above and beyond to make sure that we were well taken care of. Ambiance: the air is very energetic on a Saturday when it's game day. Great bar service & even better food. On any random day I would have walked right past this bar and never thought to stop in. Luckily I was with locals who knew this was the place to be. From the fried avocado & teriyaki shrimp to the chicken entree it was AMAZING. I would recommend this place to any local or anyone visiting. 10/10 will come back. read more

Really disappointed in service that FiveBar now has. We had a pickup order and get all the way to the location to sit down to eat and find that the burger has NO bun... how?!?? Call them back and they say you can come back and pick it up. No other resolution to make it right. Gas is too high for a trip back and then all the food is going to be cold. read more

We came on a game day, and it was pretty busy. We were greeted at the front and were seated after a few minutes. There are plenty of seating options, one side is a restaurant and there is a bar to the right when you walk in. The menu here is pretty limited, but I personally wasn't too hungry, so I ordered a plate of fries to share. They were devoured within minutes, so we ordered another plate. They were delicious though, served hot, perfectly seasoned, and topped with Parmesan (I think). We also ordered Yoshi Chicken to share. This dish was iffy for me. The lime was dry, and the chicken was an interesting squishy texture. We had to double check to see if it was cooked through - it was. And we didn't get food poisoning. Yay! My friends ordered a pasta and salad to share between them, and asked to split it into two different plates. When it came out, I thought they ordered two different plates because it was filled! So I would recommend sharing plates as the portions are quite generous. Our server was friendly, but it was a little hard to hear her sometimes because it was pretty loud in there because of the game. I liked the vibe of the bar/restaurant. The 5 in Athens has a website that suggests sophistication, as though you might need a tuxedo and a working knowledge of French verbs just to get through the door. In reality, it felt closer to a very ambitious Applebee's, the kind where they've dimmed the lights and put the staff in black aprons to distract you from the microwaves. Our waitress was the sort of unnervingly cheerful person who wants to know where you're from and why you're here, as if the answers might change her life. I lied just to keep things interesting. The cocktails, however, couldn't be saved. My partner's bore no resemblance to the description on the menu, while mine tasted like it had been finished it off with lemon Pledge. I half expected to find a rag in the glass. With so many restaurants in Athens that don't taste like furniture polish, I can't imagine returning, unless of course they rebrand as "The Cleaning Supply Bar," in which case I might stop by just to see if the Windex martini comes with olives. read more

We had brunch here on a Saturday. The wait was minimal, but within the hour the place was packed, so I think we timed it right! The pitcher of mimosas hit the spot. The wait for our food was a bit long, but once it arrived we were pleased with the presentation. The waffle in the chicken and waffles entree was SO delicious! The chicken, for those who like dark meat on the bone, will enjoy it more than I did. And the breakfast burger with fries was a hit with the others at the table. The menu includes, also, a few of what they call "snacks," such as pimento cheese and tuna dip served with chips. In my estimation, Five Bar is one of the best of the many good restaurants in downtown Athens. - It's upscale but not fussy. - The food is great. We both chose the 12oz aged Ribeye served with fries. The steak was one of the best I've had. It was perfectly seasoned with a perfect medium do on it. We got the pimento cheese and tuna dip to go with it. Everything on the table was awesome. - The service was exemplary. We were seated immediately upon entry. Our server, Kristjana, did a great job all the way around. She was on the ball the whole time and helped make the meal fun. I'd be more than happy to sit in her station again. - Note: We visited on a Sunday night around 7:00. The place gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights when immediate seating is not likely to happen. They don't take reservations, so it's first come first served. - Prices were quite reasonable for the very high quality food and great service. - It's full bar so all of your booze groups are covered. I have been to Five bar twice now and both times have been great! Of course, there is a small selection of things on the menu (hints the name being 5) but everything was delicious that my family ordered. I personally picked the ribeye and it was one of the best I have ever had. That's saying a lot for not being a steak house! This spot gets pretty crowded on times like parents weekends but the staff still handles it well. Five has a casual feel to it yet the food is remarkable. Definitely recommend! read more

Five Bar is neat because they just have just 5 entrees on the menu. I prefer that over having a ton of choices because you know the chefs are experts in each variation and it's less work to choose. Our server was also pleasant and speedy, and the ambiance was awesome-- in my opinion the best of any downtown restaurant. However, Five Bar didn't eek out Five Stars from me. It started with their lack of paper menus, which I view as lame. Part of why people my age enjoy going out us so we don't have to use our phones, and it kinda kills the vibe when everyone goes back to scrolling when they sit down at the table. Our table was also wobblier than a 1700s whaling ship, and the only thing that made it worse was when our server sheepishly came over and informed us they were unable to make mozzarella sticks. I'm not exactly sure how a mozzarella stick shortage comes to be, but between that and the magnitude 7 earthquake the table was causing we were sussed out. Finally we requested a move, and were subsequently served food that was good, but not quite at the quality the price implied. I still would've given Five Bar a 5 if everything had gone well minus the slightly lackluster (but still good) food, but all the little things added up and I had to dock a point. If you live in Athens I'd still check this place out though! I got the impression that Five Bar is usually a more charming experience-- just avoid the table 3 down from the Hull St. window. read more

This place overall sucks. The service is abhorrent. My friend and I went here, got seated immediately, which would make one think that you would be served somewhat soon. But this is the exact opposite of what we experienced. We sat down for literally 30 minutes without getting a single acknowledgement from any waiter, some of which were just milling around and talking to eachother and doing nothing. We eventually just got up and walked out (we didn't even get a water). To add onto this, there menu is extremely overpriced. Trust me, I go to school here and you can find any place to eat for half the price (food and drinks) that is just as good if not better. The staff are also not polite. Got some takeout to bring back to Cutters to eat during the game on Saturday. The menu is short and sweet. None of this 5 or 6 pages of random "specialties". There are 5 apps or snacks and 5 dinners to choose from. And every item we got was outstanding. The stuffed avocado I was skeptical of but it's now my favorite! The spicy shrimp are awesome too. Nothing like the addictive Bang shrimp at that one popular place although they've created a savory, mildly spicy sauce that slams the flavor home! So good! Also got the ribeye med/rare and it was cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. We sat at the bar while sour food was being prepared and had a nicely done Bulliet old fashioned. The bartender that night was a beautiful warm and friendly young woman, who I can't remember her name at the moment, but will certainly go back and get it right next time. Have been twice in my visits to Athens and have had the shrimp appetizer and the baked avocado both times. Both are very tasty. I prefer the shrimp, as it has great flavor, good portion size, and the crispy dish it is served in helps to balance out the dish and texture with the shrimp. I look forward to it and we usually order multiple of each dish. I've also had the chicken dinner - very large portion and very flavorful. I would recommend it, especially if you are hungry! I have also had the jalapeño marg ($5 cocktails for ladies on Thursdays!), which are very good! I also appreciate they serve them in a beer glass so it feels like you get a lot for the drink itself. Only miss is they seem to have EXTRA SLOW service which drives me nuts. I am talking 10+ minutes for your cocktail, and this is when it's not that busy! If you're looking for a great Sunday brunch in Athens look no further. Five bar has the best selection of brunch favorites like breakfast burritos, avocado toast (that is to die for) and chicken and waffles. We visited here during COVID and everyone had on masks and tables were appropriately distanced. The only sad part was that due to these current events their Bloody Mary bar wasn't set up! Which has always been a highlight of ours for brunch here! But regardless we still were able to enjoy their delicious Bloody Mary's with candied bacon. We did have an issue with our server, which I felt warranted taking away one star. We had a party of 8 and once it was time to split the checks we helped her with putting the correct items we ordered onto each check. When the checks came they were wrong so we helped her again. When the second round of checks came she put items onto our check and said that she didn't have anywhere else to put them so she charged us for things we didn't order. Our group then decided to just settle up amongst each other. Minus the hiccup with service, all in all Five Bar will continue to be our go to spot for brunch before we leave Athens, GA. read more

Wow wow wow wow. No place compares. Five Bar has the nicest atmosphere, complete with beautiful chandeliers, a cozy feeling inside, and large, red painted windows looking out to downtown Athens. The service has been above average every time we've come here. One of my favorite features is their Sunday brunch. Try to catch a jazz brunch morning one day because there's nothing like delicious food with live jazz music in the background. The uptown shrimp was better than I even imagined from looking at pictures. My pork chop was seasoned perfectly and came with a yummy side salad and creamy mashed potatoes. At brunch, the avocado toast is unbeatable as well. They only had one dessert (white chocolate bread pudding), and everyone was raving about how good it was. 2nd time reviewing Five Bar. If I could give half stars, I would say 1.5 this time around. So, against my better judgement, I decided to give Five Bar another shot to redeem themselves from the prior poor performance I endured. Despite nearly becoming sick from accidentally eating pork (after nearly 18 years without it for religious reasons), I felt the management did a pretty good job of rectifying the mistake. Now that I look back, I don't believe enough was done. This visit was disappointing from start to finish. First, I arrived before the noon/church crowd had the opportunity to crowd the place, but that didn't improve things. I literally was the only person standing in the entryway to speak to the host, who was actually quite friendly and welcoming. However, there must have been some form of a miscommunication about who would be my server, as I had 2 tables brought water and acknowledged before I, even though I expressed I'd like to sit outside. Mind you these other tables were outside as well- right next to me! Second, I flagged down a server as she was walking inside to ask if she could communicate to someone that I was waiting for a server to greet me and at the very least give me water and a menu. Still no luck. Third, I went inside and spoke to the bartender, as I was told by the host that he'd be waiting on me. However, Nick proceeded to say he wasn't waiting on anytime tables. Honestly, I get it, but the staff should better communicate amongst themselves, instead of leaving it up to the guest to figure out their jobs for them. Fourth, I finally got some water, only 10 minutes later! And a menu after the table (who again arrived after me and was seated right next to me), was done ordering- shortage of menus?? Fifth, the server who I first flagged down, turned out to be the one who would wait on me. I wanted to make it quick and semi-simple, so that I could eat and read my book, while enjoying brunch in peace. I ordered the ribeye Benedict special, but up charged it to be on the avocado toast (as this was another Benedict special), figuring I'd pay extra to have both. I always said I'd pay extra to have a side salad that typically comes with the meals, since my ribeye came with hash browns. Sixth, when my food arrived, I knew immediately it wasn't exactly what I ordered. The hash browns were missing! Seventh, the server, proceeded to tell me that the kitchen couldn't accommodate my order, because the grill was full of other orders and there was bacon everywhere on the grill. Keep in mind that I requested for the grill to be cleaned as not to have pork end up in my food again at this restaurant. So, the kitchen simply wouldn't make hash browns for my order, which were supposed to come with them! Eighth, as I'm cutting into my eggs Benedict, I noticed that the egg was poached for completely too long and was over cooked. Very, very disappointing, as this no longer makes them Benedict- the whole point is to have them runny a bit. Ninth, as I'm being deliverers a to-go box and my check, the server, informs me that she took off my side salad, because I received that instead of the hash browns that were supposed to come with it- since when are hash browns the equivalent to a tiny handful of barely dressed spinach, with 4 red onion pieces in them? Tenth and final, there are apparently no rules as to patrons or employees smoking directly in front of the restaurant (about 4 feet or less from the entrance) or even blowing smoke on the direction of all diners who pay to eat outside. Absolutely gross, and made me not want to continue my meal after seeing the same gentleman smoking repeatedly within the 10 foot distance of the entrance. Maybe GA does it different than the state I'm from, but smoking is NOT allowed within several feet of any establishment- especially restaurants! All in all, I highly doubt I'll give Five Bar another chance to fail to meet expectations of a quality dining experience. Save your money and try another place, unless mediocrity and disappointment are your things in a restaurant! *Side note, another server kept coming out to pet, hold, take photos with a bulldog puppy. Did she wash her hands after every time doing this???? I seriously want to know. read more

Five Stars and a High-five for FIVE! Just over a year after the start of the pandemic, six months after we moved to Athens, and two weeks after our second Covid vaccine, the hubs and I recently ventured out for our very first, NON-homecooked meal. But you would never know. The moment we stepped into downtown's FIVE, we felt at home. The ambiance was a cool vibe reminiscent of our previous lives in Hollywood, CA. From the eclectic blend of several ginormous canopy-like chandeliers filling the other-wise rustic main dining room, to the large, funky folk art on the walls honoring music icons like REM and the B52's, right down to the Dave Grohl doppelganger restaurant manager (shout out to Julio! The host with the most :)) we were bedazzled and bewitched as we sauntered up to the well-attended, and well-stocked bar to get our happy hour on. The margarita was solid, the beer refreshing, the mixologist cute and friendly, and the tunes were mildly alternative and satisfactorily head-bobbing. Alfresco seating became available, so we eagerly took our little party of two outside to enjoy the perfect weather (11 on the local Wizometer, say what?!) and ordered up some southern grub from the kitchen. Five's menu is as elegant as it is simple with just five thoughtful entrees to choose from, plus some other starters and one or two daily specials. It was Sunday, so I opted for Ms. Anne's Fried Chicken and Baked Mac n' Cheese. Ok, first of all, who is Ms. Anne, and can I please marry, adopt, or abduct her, and secondly, my God! who invented pimento cheese and where has it been all my life? Hands down, this was some of the tastiest food I've ever eaten. Even the side salad--fresh spring greens, slivered almonds, goat cheese, apples, dried cranberries and light creamy dressing--was a delicate combination of flavor to complement the savory goodness of the thinly skinned, perfectly coated fried chicken and mouthwatering macaroni. Oh, and there's this stuff called "uptown sauce" that they hide underneath the M&C so you don't even know why your mouth is exploding with joy until you get to the bottom of your plate. All in all, it was the best first-meal after a very long year of cooped-up unpleasantness. Hats off to chef Tina for throwing down true comfort, and to the rest of the FIVE team for making two new Athenians feel like family. We'll be seeing y'all again real soon. read more
