I'd give this a 4.5 if I could! I had a few hiccups with timing, but the flavors and the proactive service recovery made it a place worth returning to. The ambiance was also a vibe. The food: I went with the Fried Chicken Blue Plate. Between the regular and the Nashville Hot, the Nashville was the winner--flavorful and moist without being overwhelming with the spice. Huge shoutout to my server for suggesting the brussel sprouts; that glaze is incredible and they were easily my favorite part of the plate. The mashed sweet potatoes were unique--I'm still debating if I liked them or loved them. The jalapeño cornbread was a bit sweet for my taste but on par with most restaurant cornbread. The mac & cheese wasn't bad, but also didn't do much for me like most restaurant mac & cheese. The cocktail: Do not sleep on Nana's Naissance. I wasn't sure what to expect from the ingredients, but it's like an elevated take on Rumchata. The service: I was seated at the bar and experienced a noticeable delay--a group that arrived well after me almost finished their meal before mine arrived. However, the waitress acknowledged the wait before I even had to mention it and made things right. I really appreciate that kind of proactive service. We're all human, and they handled the situation very professionally.
Ambiance of this place is outstanding. Love the marble, love the ceilings, love the stained glass. The bar was pretty impressive as well. I was visiting from out of town and my friend made us a late dinner reservation (8 on a Thursday.) We were seated right away. We started with the pimento cheese appetizer...they were able to give us all veggies and no bread which is awesome. I got a Fogbound which I thought I would like more that I did. I realize it's a martini but I thought it would have more of an Earl Grey taste (spoiler: it didn't!) I got the Roast Beef Blue Plate which was pretty good. The challah bread was amazingly soft and the potatoes were amazing. But the beef was basically chipped beef and the side of collards were too sweet and spicy. Overall it was a wonderful evening. The staff was excellent and deserve many kudos for how knowledgeable they were about gluten allergies!
We had a fantastic experience at South Kitchen + Bar! We started with drinks--a frozen chocolate martini (absolutely decadent!) and a few beers. Great spot to celebrate our graduate! Go DAWGS! The real standout of the meal was the duck fat tater tots. These were sinfully delicious. They were crispy, rich, and easily one of the best appetizers I've had in a long time. They include three different dips We visited during lunch service, and everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. The portions were generous, especially considering the price, and the overall quality was excellent. If you're looking for a great lunch spot with memorable bites and solid service, South Kitchen + Bar is definitely worth the visit!
In town for a cheer event. Service got a big confused because a cheer mom didn't take a look at the menu for kids before having us seated. The staff was great about figuring out how to accommodate us just for most of the parents to get up and leave. I stayed to enjoy my salmon dinner. The okra was seasoned perfectly and the Brussels sprouts added that extra flavor.
This was our first stop in Athens... we were fortunate to catch them before they turned over from brunch to happy hour, and everything was just divine. After spending all day in the car, it was lovely to stretch out in a beautiful space (because the architectural space is gorgeous), and enjoy a delicious meal. I went with a fried green tomato sandwich and a side of macaroni and cheese, which was simply heaven in a bowl. The sandwich was perfectly sized, and well flavored. Great service and great vibes! I would love to go back for cocktails and more snacks.
Very good service all around and an absolutely beautiful dining room. The food was incredible, they impart so much smoky and savory flavor into every dish. My omelette was under-seasoned a bit, but the bits with meat in them were fine, although the egg should have still been more salted. The white cheddar grits were the best grits I've had from a restaurant. Wonderful brunch spot!
Historic building with large windows and soaring ceiling gives this place a lot of good ambiance. Good bar for relaxing or watching the game. Bartender made a great margarita w casa amigos. Caesar salad had amazing dressing. Hanger steak was cooked perfectly and came with delicious mashed potatoes. Very solid choice in Athens.
The service I received was great. That's why I gave the second star. The inside is lovely and set up very quaint. Unfortunately I only came for the beignets which cost me $15 before tip for only 5 and they were horribly burnt and barely dusted with any powdered sugar. I definitely wish I hadn't made the extra stop.
This is one of my continual favorite restaurants here in Athens! Always great service and a great meal! I came in without a reservation on a busy Saturday night and we were seated relatively quickly! The restaurant was really relaxed but still intimate. I tried their new menu item which they change seasonally which was the lamb and grits. My server was amazing and was stating that I should try it. I really did love it! So amazing! It didn't look appealing to the eye but the flavor is amazing! The cornbread was decent it was more dry than I would've preferred but the butter did help! The dessert was amazing! I really enjoyed my meal! I encountered a slight problem during my visit but my server and the manager were amazing! It truly wasn't even a problem as they fixed the situation so quickly and just went above and beyond. My server was Madi and the manager was Katie! Both were so helpful and I'll definitely be back! Thank you South Kitchen!
10/20/25 Ate at South Kitchen plus Bar today. Food was great. Five stars. Waitress was excellent. Very relaxing atmosphere. Hope you enjoy the photos. I took while there.
Love going here on a D8 night. The food is always good the drinks are always strong. Would def recommend
I stopped by to grab a to-go plate, and I have to say, this restaurant is SO cute! I absolutely loved the industrial loft vibe--it gives the place so much character. The service was really nice, too. I sat at the bar to place my order, and luckily, the bartender was vegetarian and pointed me in the right direction when it came to choosing what to try. The collard greens weren't really my favorite, but the tots and mac & cheese? Absolutely delicious! Those were definitely the standouts for me. This is definitely a spot we'll be visiting again in the near future. My only wish is that they offered a few seafood options, but there were still plenty of things to enjoy. Parking is a little limited, but the area is very walkable, so that definitely helps. Overall, super cute spot, friendly service, and some really good food! read more
I absolutely want to give this place more than 5 stars, and I would give them more but for one major factor during our brunch this Sunday. As it is, I'd still give them a 4.75 stars for such a lovely experience. I would still say you NEED to eat here if you are here on Sunday! Just be warned to wear not slip shoes! They actually take reservations for Sunday brunch, so that's already a plus. When we were running a bit late, Indie was truly a joy to talk with, and she made the change without a hiccup! Once we got there, she was even more welcoming and got us seated in no time. Before I explain my concern, let me make it clear that we will certainly be back when we visit Athens! The location is so close to the UGA campus it's a no-brainer. There was plenty of street parking around, including handicap, so it's easy to get to. While the front entrance is almost hilariously plain and non-descript, the interior is really beautiful!! I felt like we walked into a The Great Gatsby. My daughter was tickled by the ever-changing ticker sign over the bar. Everyone loved the stained glass and deep colors. Even the bathrooms were like being at Grand Central Station in the 20's. And the food!!! We tried all the classic Southern Soul Food staples, and they did NOT disappoint! From the fried green tomatoes, to the shrimp & grits, to an enormous French Toast, they put their foot in it!! Bravo! I have to note that the fried chicken is truly crave-able--crispy, juicy, & flavorful!! The fried green tomatoes were cornbread crispy and delicious! Fair warning that they do have a bit of a bite to them, so check with your littles. We appreciated that they offered egg whites in any dish with eggs, but I wish there was a non-pork substitute for some dishes. There's a vegan selection, but it's just not the same, so we didn't try it. Maybe next time! I lived my goat cheese omelette, and the portion was big enough I got to take some home with me. Just wonderful food all around. The beignets were divine! And it ended up being my daughter's birthday dessert/app. And then we just kept ordering more. Cannot say enough great things about our server--and my mind goes blank because I wish I could remember her name!! She was great the entire time for our whole 9-top group. She kept the waters filled, she cleared plates along the way, she was welcoming and engaging, and we just all enjoyed being here because of it. While we waited for some of our party to arrive, we were directed to a beautiful lobby adjacent to the restaurant. Unfortunately, the floor was exceptionally slippery--like an oily kind of slippery that is not conducive to an 88-year-old using a walker kind of slippery. I was a little worried for my F & MIL. The elevator is so far from where we needed to be that it wasn't worth the risk, so we chose to go up the 2 steps at the front entrance. Luckily for us, everyone was able to move around with care this time. read more

Very interesting setting. This is a former bank and there are a lot of period gilded features to it. We came for brunch right at opening. Note: GA alcohol laws do not permit sales before 11am, so if you're looking for that 10am Bloody Mary, better luck later. The food and service were very good. Decent street parking. Recommended while in Athens. read more
Loved this downtown Athens restaurant! It's in a great spot, just a short walk from the theatre where the GA state chorus was. The food and service were top-notch, and we enjoyed sitting outside. We did get a little chilly towards the end, but it was worth it! read more

Fantastic restaurant. Service was good, I ordered a Nojito (refreshing and heavy on the mint), duck fat tater tots, and a fried chicken blue plate. Ambiance was pretty upscale. The tater tots were fried just right, although very hot when they first came out. The mustard and hot sauce that came with it were really good. The chicken plate was perfect because of the combinations of southern flavors. I really enjoyed the jalapeño cornbread muffins, even though I don't typically like cornbread. The pickle was okay, the peppers had a sneaky kick to them. read more
I saw the fried chicken thighs on the menu and really wanted to try them. You get two large pieces. They looked really good. As you can see in the picture. Problem was that there was no seasoning. I added salt but that didn't help. It came with sides that reminded me of baby food. The Mac n cheese was good but the amount is so small that it's not work getting. I was so disappointed. Also the mashed potatoes were salty and had no flavor at all. I must say that the chicken tasted better cold after I added some seasoned salt and pepper. Service was great. Atmosphere great. This just fell short of my expectations. I will probably return read more

I was in Athens for Athfest and decided to stop by for dinner with my friends. Athens always has good food so I was excited to check this new place out. We walked in around 6 and they were able to seat our party of 8 pretty much immediately which was awesome! I got the frozen espresso martini which was so fun! The cold foam had hardened so we had to crack it first to be able to drink, but it was delicious and super cool. For my entree, I split fried pickles with a friend and got a grilled chicken Caesar salad. The pickles were fine (the breading was a little loose), but the salad was absolutely delicious!! The portion size was generous and I loved the blackening on the chicken. The salad also had bacon and their house Caesar dressing was so tangy and yummy. Overall, loved South Kitchen and can't wait to check out on my next trip to Athens! read more
Um this place was amazing!! I had never been here before and they were the best. First thing, they say our party of 8 down immediately at 6pm which was honestly amazing without a reservation. Our waitress was patient and amazing with our group. I got the frozen espresso martini to drink and it was delicious! The cold foam was hard and made it a little funny to drink but once broken up it got easier and it was delicious. For my main, I got the fried pickles and a grilled chicken Caesar salad. The pickles were okay with some loose breading but still delicious. The salad was stunning and had plenty of chicken and was HUGE!! There was plenty of bacon too which was amazing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food and this was delicious. 10/20 and would definitely come again. read more

My friends and I were on a girls trip this weekend, and South came highly recommended for good reason! This was a very cute southern kitchen with brunch options for all my favorite southern dishes like shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, bbq and Mac and cheese! Instantly felt like I was back in my hometown of Macon! If there is one thing South got absolutely right, it's their tater tots! These might have been some of my favorite tater tots I've ever tasted! They were flavorful and well-seasoned and came with three amazing dipping sauces! In addition to the tater tots, the shrimp and grits were also good! On top of the great food, the service was great! Our server was very friendly and attentive! I would definitely recommend! read more

We dined in for brunch right as the restaurant opened. We were seated immediately. Our server (Olivia) was kind and attentive. The beignets were light, fluffy and delicious. The duck fat tater tots were hot and crispy. The biscuits and gravy was good but we felt like there could have been more gravy. The gifts were creamy and delicious. The omelette was good but could've used more filling. We got the mimosas which had a good ratio of orange juice to Prosecco. We were seated by an a/c vent which was too chilly for my likings but others in the group were fine with it. read more

We had a good experience for Wednesday date night. We're sharers, so we shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio, the Cobb salad and the salmon. The description of the corn they paired with the salmon was creamed, but it was not. I do believe they used fresh corn, but it in no way resembled or tasted like creamed corn. The okra and tomato's paired beautifully with the salmon and cheese grits I ordered separately. The Cobb salad, called something else, was delicious. The fried chicken thigh, candied bacon and egg were delicious together. Their ranch tasted homemade. The Brûléed cheesecake that our server suggested was simply cheesecake with melted sugar on it as the Brûléed part had melted to a syrup. It didn't stop us from munching it, the cheesecake was silky and smooth. We took the chocolate torte home, it was the true winner and was absolutely divine. We sliced strawberries to go with it. 10/10 reccomend. Worth the reservation! read more

We visited South Kitchen + Bar on our recent trip to UGA and it was a lovely brunch spot! The building is pretty and featured stained glass windows and chandeliers. We got the French toast, spicy chicken sandwich, and a "build your own breakfast" plate. All were good. The bacon was super super greasy but it's bacon, so that happens! Fruit sides were tiny, but refreshing. The waitress was friendly and we might be back next time we are in the area. read more

Currently, my parents and I are trying to sell our house. While people view our house, I need to place to go to with my dog, who can be pretty lazy, so hiking for long hours might not be possible. Is this place a dog friendly enviroment?
Definitely dog friendly on our patio. We have a tent if it’s too sunny and dog bowls to keep your pets hydrated.
Do you serve mimosas for brunch? Any specials on brunch drinks? I am coming in a few weekends for my bachelorette party and just trying to get an idea!
Hi Gina, Yes, we serve mimosas for $3 from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and 11am to 3pm on Sundays.
I have a group of 20-25 coming to Athens and will need a place to eat Monday March 25. Can y'all accomodate?
They have a large dining area behind the main bar and dining area that can accommodate large groups. It can easily be set up for that size group. They take reservations.
